i'm not good with social media but I can swing a spanner thanks Steve love your work you are teaching people over and again
wow..... you just saved me a lot of money. you have the best videos on here. the videos are great. just the right length and straight to the point. i like how you how the object against a background that brings out the subject to be able to see it better. i have fixed my weedeater and also my lawn mower. thank you so much for doing these.
I want to remove the nut from that bearing assembly that fell off, any suggestions?
I'm 75 and my dad always called them water pump pliers. Most people now days say, "what's a water pump pliers?" 😊 Great video. I know you're a real mechanic because you try to fix things first before heading to a parts catalog.
Thanks 👍
Haha yup
I'm a 69yo Australian. We always called them multi-grips.
Thank you Steve. Your video is well done, clear, and useful for us folks who like to fix things ourselves.
You're Welcome...
You have the best tips and explain everything so well and thoroughly. 👍🏻
Thanks so much!
Yea I love the detailed information Great if your looking for help to fix anything.
Thank you very much. A perfect tutorial. fixed my FS38 straight away with no fuss.
nice one Steve👍
Right on
agree. came here searching for ideas for my fs38.
You're the man! All the Baby Steps to completion. I thought you'd be sawing at the bevel longer, but it appears to be quite easily accomplished. Now we know exactly what to do. I'm so glad I found you and subscribed. *Thanks!*
Thank You...and You're Welcome...
Great video. I thought you were done with it and I was about to comment about pulling the drive shaft out to get the bearing back in and you covered it. LOL. Good man! You have a great way of explaining things for the avg. Joe trying to work on these and your videos are very well done. High five Steve!
Thanks 👍
Thank you! I have been looking at one of mine thinking there has to be a way to fix it. I can’t believe it was that easy. Thank you!!!!
Glad it helped!
Easy fix if you're lucky enough to own a lathe, if not you could mount the shaft in a drill and carefully touch it up with the hacksaw blade.
Nice one Steve.
Great point!
I just replaced my 30 year old Poulan XT200 Featherlite with a brand spanking new Stihl FS38. I haven't even fired it up at home yet (raining) so I've been watching how-to videos on using it and maintaining it. Time well spent! I like your style and have already learned a lot. Thank you!
You're Welcome...
Great tip Steve! When this happened to me, my approach was, put the part on the mini lathe, touch it with a 1/16th cut off blade and BOOM! Job done and perfectly square.
COOL!
If your really carful chuck the bearing shaft in a drill/drill press.
Hey Steve, I have been an Outdoor Power Equipment Technician for almost 30 years, and I only learned this trick today from watching your video. I worked at a Stihl dealership as a tech and of course, they want the customer to buy a new assembly, so nobody ever told us about this trick. Thanks for the awesome information! Cheers!
Glad to help
Steve, I had the trimmer head of my FS45 fly off in the woods while doing trail maintenance 2 yrs ago. I went to my local Stihl dealer for parts and assistance. He told me it would be cheaper to buy a new trimmer. Due to the type of work I was doing, I bought the Stihl 131R - it's a beast with a steel blade! I still have the FS45 curved shaft. After seeing your video, I'm going to get it back out and try your solution. Thanks!
Good luck!
Man I was operating my old Stihl FS45 today after it had sat up not running for over 20+ yrs now being it was my wife's dad's & it wouldn't stay running for him so he gave it to her B4 she & I met & I stored it in my old shed until the other day when I decided what the heck let's get this thing going! So I bought a new pull cord assembly, then realized that the engine had seized up so I poured a little engine oil in it & it started moving then rebuilt the carb & a new spark plug & fuel filter as well as a new fuel line wooola! It's running again .. so today took it out on a job & it was doing great until darn head fell off half way through the job! I stuck it back in & cranked it & once again it fell out so I was about to just electrical tape it together to the spring shaft & noticed it wasn't going to work like that so I left the job unfinished & came home & decided to Google & see if anyone else has had this problem & fortunately ran across your RUclips vy! Appreciate it man I'll have it fixed now! A++ 👍 subscribed & following! 😁
Thank you. This is why we watch.
You're Welcome...
Thanks for sharing Steve! Great tip and excellent detail! I look forward to chatting Saturday again if you’re around for Conkers live :)
Hey Tom how’s it going good to see you here.
@@MyGreenLawn2019 good to catch you too mate :)
@@VintageEngineRepairs thanks 😊
Once again you come through for us, Steve. I have a curved shaft trimmer, it's pretty new and never ran well when I first got it. I watched your carburetor adjustment video for trimmers, it runs perfectly, it probably never ran that well at the factory test. This video is another jewel, thanks.
Seems like good to know Information for sure
I don't own a curved shaft stihl trimmer but good to know, as I'm usually the first person friends and family come to, when they need help with OPE. Thanks for sharing👍
You're Welcome...
This was a real good one sir thanks for the heads up 👍
Hey Bill good to see ya here
This just happened to me 2 days ago, I put the clip back on and you are right as soon as I started it the head came off.
I will now try your fix, thanks Steve.
Thanks for the longer detailed vid! I do small engine repair on the side after my 8-5 auto mechanic job in PEI, and I always love the 5 minute plus videos because they’re usually more technical, great video and thanks for the tip! Helped me save and make more money!
I would agree I’m still trying to figure out the proper length of videos on my channel. Sometimes my videos are long and I hate that they are long but sometimes there’s no way to make them shorter. This one was perfect
A perfect description of the construction of trimmer head in position. Thank you
Very welcome
You earned a sub. Great video. When I took my bearing out I had to beat it out with a pin and hammer it was so tight. Also the bearing in there looks sheared off near the recess metal for the c clip. I ordered a new one and am installing it now. Praying that it jives well. Thanks Steve I appreciate you!!
Cool, thanks
Hey Steve, thanks for the info, hasn't happened to me yet, but now i know what to do just encase. While you had it apart you should have reminded us about your tip to easily grease that bearing without taking it out! I didn't forget, already did mine. Thanks for all the good information about things i wouldn't think of myself!
Good stuff!
I was wondering if it was the same on a straight shaft Stihl and then you went and said the exact same model I had right at the end🤝🤝👍👍👍👍🇺🇸🇺🇸
Hi Steve should you not maybe lube that bearing with maybe some white grease or something of that nature. Great info have learned a lot from your videos.
Take care
YUP. The video for that is in the description...
He did a video on how to grease that bearing without taking it out. Really easy, go back and check it out.
@@blowupbob1 thanks just watched it. 👍
@@StevesSmallEngineSaloon thanks 😊
Thank-you Steve. That end was worn completely down. The neighbour/tinkerer brazed sone metal and latgef the groove. We watched your vidyo and got to it. That clip is a bastard though. It didnt go on well and got distorted. I always feel confident after your advice. Cheers from Glenora. Ps. The assembly is 35$ at Highway rentals. If it cant be fixed at home with your help, I'll support the best local shop.
I have that same model Stihl curved shaft trimmer. I’ll keep this in mind if this should ever happen to me. Thanks, Steve. 🍺👍🏼
You're Welcome...
Great video Steve. Especially for reconnecting the bearing to flexible drive shaft after installing the circlip.
Thanks 👍
Yea that was good info for sure
just struggling with an fs38. Changed clip but popped out. Thanks for strenghtening my next planmed idea. 👍
Glad to help
I’ve never had this problem…yet. But thank you Steve! Over and out.
You're Welcome...
03:11 Thank you sir...once again...just...thank you!
07:45 ...more magic...thank you again...I am humbled...
Back to the vid...
Love it Steve even though I don’t use a curved shaft love the information have a great day man
Thank You...
@@StevesSmallEngineSaloon thank you 🙏
Steve what do you know about weedeater blades for curved shaft weedeaters?
"Groovy" fix. Thanks Steve.
LOL! Right on Al...
Thank you for the video. Repaired my Troybilt as stated.
Gday Steve, I have a FS-460CE.
The gear head on this machine is slightly different to the smaller residential machines. I have just removed and regressed the the bearings and cleaned it all up, It’s back together now though I’m not sure if the top shaft with the circlip is pushed down to far into the gear below. I couldn’t find any reassembly specs in relation to tolerances.. A future vid on a tear down and rebuild on one of these would be awesome 👌 Great channel..
Mike Jones from West Oz
That's a brilliant video Steve you make it look simple to a novice like me
Thank You...
Being a mild mannered calm individual, when the head came off I just left it laying in the yard. Later... THREW the darned thing in the shed! bout to buy a new weed whacker UNTIL I checked with you. Thanks Steve!
You're Welcome...
Great video and yes you saved us some money. Thanks from France.
Great to hear!
Fantastic!!!
Love this type of repairs.
Me too!
That was amazing. My fse60 just failed and I cant believe there was a yt solution. Thks Steve!
Glad it helped!
@@StevesSmallEngineSaloon lol! It helped yes , but it didnt go smoothly , not like on tv! it didnt stayed fixed. The inner piece was really tight and took an effort to get out. Then, after using the machine for 10 minutes the head fell off again! This time i will go against Steve! I will use a dremel on the notch made for the c clip. I did quite a bit of effort with a hacksaw , with its handle! And still the notch for the clip failed. Do it again , one of the recurring dramas of my life - try try try again
So in so many words you gave us the shaft, and we're overjoyed....... Only you Steve, only you 😜😂😎
You're a genius!
SLICK! That was another great instructional video, Steve!
I don't have a curved shaft trimmer, but you provided much technical information in the clip that can be used elsewhere. That C clip seating with the socket was beauty! Two 👍👍
Cheers!
Thanks 👍
Thanks Steve, I just picked up an FS45 C-E that had this problem and found your video to repair it for $0. Amazing! I didn't have water pump pliers but vise-grips worked just as well.
Great to hear!
👍great advice Steve... be even easier to put the shaft in a drill and just touch the hacksaw blade briefly to the job.
Good idea man
Another great tip, well explained.
Thanks so much Steve 👍
I love when the videos are to point especially when your trying to fix something
Very good tip there Steve on that issue with the bearing coming out and how to fix it.
Thank You...
@@StevesSmallEngineSaloon your welcome
I can't wait for mine to break to be able to fix it, sort of. Thanks Steve.
Right on
Thank you so much. This video could not have been more helpful
You're Welcome...
Thanks Steve that's one to store away until it's needed, I didn't know how those things were assembled, but now I do !
Right on
Thanks for the video cupcake
I was getting so frustrated with the new head flying off my FS45 I could have angerly bent the shaft in half. Since I've suscribed to your channel for years I took a breather and searched your videos. Found one...Perfect & Easy fix. Most importantly, you saved me a boatload of money. Thanks. P.S. Try a Negra Modelo
Glad it helped
Cool Thanks happen to me yesterday so it’s off to the shed I go to do everything you just showed us on how to fix it wish me luck lol
Don't forget your lucky wrench and magical toolbox! May the DIY gods be with you.
Thank you steve this happened to my fs38 today I will try this will save me alot of money
Right on
Great tip! One question: Would it be a good idea to apply oil or grease before assembly of the shaft?
I was asking the same question, did you ever get the answer you were looking for?
Hello Steve. It's a great tricks, I've used it on a second hand FS40C bought yesterday. It works, it's fantastic and cheaper than the quotation made by the repairman.
Have a nice day.
Great to hear!
Thx Steve again for the hard jobs made easy.. cheers
You're Welcome...
Thanks! This video really helped to fix my FS45! Very useful!
Great to hear!
Happened to me a couple of weeks ago. I thought I was gonna have to completely replace the shaft. I'm gonna try this tomorrow. Thank you
You're Welcome...
@StevesSmallEngineSaloon it worked! Thanks boss, you have no idea how much $$$ you saved me and time. I was behind on schedule too! Thanks Steve
You Sir, are a hero. I've learned so much from you!
Wow, thanks!
Thanx Steve always great tips and problem solving!👍
Glad to help
Hey Steve, I watch you now and then, but I do watch quite a few of your videos. You my friend are very helpful even if some the content doesn't pertain to what my issues are. Now I have a Poulan Prolink PP330 string trimmer. I bought it bran new about 9 or 10 years ago. I only used it maybe 3 or 4 times That first season and it hasn't started or ran since. I check the spark plug which OK but I changed it anyway, checked and cleaned the carburetor, I even made up a fresh mix of gas, still nothing. Now I have no idea why I held onto it so long not running either. I don't know if you would no what the issue maybe or not. It's not like it really matters I've been without it this long. Thanks Steve have a great day. Happy father's day.
Thanks Steve I have looked for several years for on utube for someone to show how to take apart and repair that spinner head bushing.
Glad to help
I love your Tips Steve. Keep em comin. Have a Beer for me. 👍🇬🇧🔧
Will do!
Steve that's awesome and happy Father's Day everyone 🍻
Thank You...
Once again Steve...you put this vid out too late!!! This happened to me last year. I was going to buy the part to repair my trimmer, but I found a used one on Kijiji for less than the bearing would have been. I kept the old one for parts, but I have probably lost that bearing somewhere on my bench. Excellent Video, just a little too late is all. Thanks again!!!
Thanks Steve, I just bought a new Husqvarna weed trimmer on Tuesday. Hope I don't need to use your trick for a while.
thank you Steve you have saved me so much time and money over the years.
You're Welcome...
Thanks man you put my mind at ease
Glad to hear it
Very helpful. Useful to us DIYers for more than this project.
I learned something today - Thanks Steve :-)
Right on Clause!
Once again you have shown how to fix a problem and save a bundle. Thanks again. 😊
You are so welcome!
Should this be cleaned and lubricated? My Toro straight shaft trimmer seized. I was able to clean out the debris and lubricate it. Works perfectly now.
Thank you Steve for showing me how I nearly got ripped off for a repair. Dealer wanted $80AUD for replacing with a second hand shaft.
You're Welcome...
Found my answer on a previous video thank you.
Glad I could help!
Thanks steve the master of all masters cheers
You're Welcome...
Thanks for sharing this tip Steve. It is useful information that could be used in a future string trimmer repair. 🔧👍 Take Care.
Thanks 👍
Very nice Steve - I will keep that in mind. Wish you a great weekend!
Thanks Andy, you too...
Thanks for the video should you grease the bearing and the shaft as well? I know the bearing is different than the upper models that have a grease point. Thanks in advance.
Great job I guess you can grease the cable while you are in there.
Great fix! Awesome thank you.
You're Welcome...
Great video Steve. Thanks! Also watched the one about the hidden grease hole!!

Thanks! 👍
cheers Steve I had that happen on mine yesterday and as I was cleaning my garden in france I did not want to take it to a repair shop here as I normally fix my own kit in England so I checked on the price of a new end and a few choice words later said sod that it was almost what my old strimmer was worth but now all fixed and ready for round two in a balmy 40 degrees summer heat so a few cold ones now cheers Steve
Thank you so much! I can't believe I was able to do this with your help
Glad I could help!
You are always amazing with any new videos including this gear assembly.
More to come!
Thanks Steve, made my day. Cheers……..subscribed
Awesome, thank you!
You're a good man, have a great weekend and cheers from Australia
Thanks, you too!
Hi Steve thanks for the tips on these . I have the FS 40 and I put the plastic blades on it now I cannot get the head off to change back to the trim string head it is locked and will not turn what do I do ? Thanks again Pete
Hi Steve, Is that rounded groove a manufacturer defect or does this happen from regular wear and tear ? Thanks for the video. All the best to you and yours. Rol
Love the videos, save me so much time and money....thank you. PS did you just do a repair without a BEER??????
So did the beer come before or after you figured that out? Honestly, I can't remember. Lets just have a beer!
Great video!
I will save this video for later if same thing happens to my stihl trimmer.
Thank you!
Please do!
