everyone here is right, Phil used a CR-78 to write the album in his house. Genesis were on tour through 1977 - 78 and while in Japan they went to the Roland factory and apparently were given the first 3 CR-78's off the production line. Collins didn't really want one, he was a drummer, come on!! a drum machine!!. Anyway, the tour finished after a long time, came home, wife had left him, taken the two kids. empty house, looked at the drum machine, plugged it in, wrote "in the Air tonight" the rest as they say, is history. Improvised all the lyrics. One interesting fact about that period, he did have one house mate from time to time, so he didn't write that album completely alone. One John Martyn was a mate and would call round to keep him company, and listen to the material. Oh and they might have popped down the village pub to consider the merits of alcohol over tea in the recording process, (only occasionally of course) for a few loosener's :-)
I thought the drum machine was imposed by the producer because his original version was just the ambient synth and the producer felt it was too weird for radio. Maybe I heard wrong. However it was done…it was an excellent choice. One of my favorite songs.
Hi Sandy yes, it's me fill up. And thanks so much for checking out my channel again I love your energy and the music that you're doing. Keep up the great work
This TR-8 looks a bit different than a regular one. It has a custom-made wrist-rest and some additional sidings. May I know where did you get it from? :) Thanks in advance.
@vision quest sound Phillip You have a ray of hope to a desperate Midwest boy You were instrumental in a cover using this with a Moog sub37 and prophet08 synth. Nothing but me Live. I wish I could give you how that felt. HEART
Fail! There is no Roland cr78 on the tr8 or any other modern drum machine unless you use samples. Most of us can't find kind afford a cr78 although I'd personally if I needed this sound record the midi and use samples but still your missing the point of this tutorial.
I think you are both missing the point. The title says that he’s programming a TR-8, and he shows it in a way that is helpful for those who use a sequencer with an 4 bar phrase. I’m going to use whichever sample set (I have two CR-78 samples) sounds the most like the record, and I’ll probably try an 808. All will get overdriven anyway. His video encompasses what you need to program it on a TR-8. So success! Not fail.
Yes, that vst sound, finally in hardware :) ...if it was analogue like everbody wants, they would be pissed But for now the TR-8 also has a 707 & 909 kit & bigger better control knobs
Yeah nobody. Sorry but you can't even tune all the drums on the tr-08 let alone play it as an instrument in nearly the same capacity. the tr-08 is for 808 nutters like myself, it's not a replacement for tr-8
On the original, as mentioned elsewhere in the comments, it was done with a CR78 and there wasn't any reverb, but rather a short delay on everything. Moreover, the hi-hat of the TR-8 doesn't sound anything like the one on the TR-808, or CR78. Too smooth sounding, and not enough "byte". But thanks anyway.
You waffle thru quite a bit of it but then when it comes to the most complex part of the bass beats and accents at the end, you zip thru it at 60mph. We're not all using a TR-8 to program it

Wow love the story! Phil Collins is awesome and a legend!
The pub he used to go to is The Queen Victoria in Shalford, Surrey. Just up the road from his house.
A lot of demos-covers on my channel with this song too: check it out !
it's a bad demo sorry
too many problems and snare-kicks (not enough kicks, ) the velocity etc. too much problems to sound like the original

A simple, flowing tutorial with no gaps or hesitation. Congratulations!

I think he knows it's originally a Roland CR78, but he just says he uses the 808 kit.
Nice man. Enjoyed it.

Very Nice! Great Instructions too. Going to try this out myself.
Thanks so much for checking out the channel. The TR-8 is one of my favorite machines of all times

Thanks for that.
Please show more 80s classics drums!!!
Yeah man that's perfect structure.
CR-78, as I'm sure you're aware though
That’s Amazing. Can you make videos for Dutchess and Man On The Corner ? I LOVE this.
Pattern A also has a quiet kick on the second beat (button 5).
Can you program long long way to go by Phil Collins please
Thank You!

Nice video, what's that thing you have the TR-8 inside? It has black edges now :)
no need to reply - I just saw your video with the giant case :)
the Genesis fans are here :)))))
No. It was a CR-78
Yes you’re right, originally CR-78.
I re-created on the TR8 for a practical exercise
It was actually a PRESET drum pattern on the CR-78 but a much faster disco beat.
I keep expecting to hear that distorted chord.
Hello, can you please let me know what stand that is and where did you get it? Cheers
canaryraver_official this is a custom build at nice-racks.com
If you are local in LA, you can take a look at mine.
the original was a cr-78 pattern was a stock disco 2, that came from Phiol himself and the Engineer
With modified kick pattern
Is there a ring shot missing? Just asking.
how do you know where to put the numbers ? im lost

could you do a girls on film drum line
I wonder how many people will be pissed off after buying this now that Roland have launched the tr-08?

id pay for an online lesson explaining this
Way do you have to talk so fast when explaining it ?
add copy a to b roland!!!
Its spinning me out lol
where's the Ctrl + Z ?
I just use the clear button undo. But it would be nice to have a ctrl Z!

i cant imagine the drugs they were on to make this from scratch
You can put my dog to sleep any day :I
putting phil out of a job.
Why would you need to put your dog to sleep before programming this. That’s just cruel!
Horrible drums sounds!!
funny
