Although he resisted, this man is creative and big enough to see the possibilities of using a drum machine and not be "threatened". He used both, live drums and the drum machine together. Collins was a creative force, unafraid to experiment, partly because of his work with Genesis and Brand X. Phil was never 'stuck'. He was the leader! A truly complex and deep individual.
Great insight Phil..great to hear the stories behind the making of some of your works, a real gentleman and a true talent with an amazing body of work...did I miss again is still my fave track..funky as hell and great horns
Damn Phil, you had me googling for 10 minutes trying to find the 808 used on the Abacab album, lol !! Turns out it runs all through "Man on the Corner". I had always just assumed it was the CR-78.
I liked your comment because i get your point, Michael. But likewise it was a wonderful era for great session drummers getting work all over the place -- not just Phil was on so many records but John "JR" Robinson, Jim Keltner, Jeff Porcaro, Steve Gadd, Bernard Purdie, Andy Newmark...
Moreover, as an all-eras life-long Genesis fan, i respect Phil for not eschewing the drum machines but rather embracing them and (perhaps it's just my opinion but) realizing they were necessarily going to be a part of the whole shebang going forward as it were...
Very detailed and informative, even though i knew about nearly all his uses of the 78 & 808. A shame more of this interview did not make it into the film.
First use of drum machine in Genesis is not on Abacab but on Duke, in the song Duchess. It even predates In The Air Tonight. I also always wonder what the drum sound is that is used on Genesis' It's Yourself, a B-side from the A Trick Of The Tail album. It doesn't sound like Phil playing at all, and does sound very mechanical.
I am hardcore fan of 808 bongos....combined with 808 kick - you have 4 instruments which you can tune all together and really tr808 turns into playing harmonies..... just check Massive Attack '3' from Protection album, I am so mesmerized by those bongo/congo sounds so much, I mastered tuning bongos on 808 to the fundamental of the song, and my 808 'sings' :). BTW agree what Phil is saying, the machine can be groovy, it just depends on how you program it...even considering the rigid grid (although 808 sequencer was slowing down at the end of the sequence and on the very first note - back on time, this alone 'created' certain groove....I love 808!!
So many, except good drummers, totally underestimate how incredibly gifted this man is. Bold, brash, subtle, and nuanced.....the whole creative 'package'. Such a quality influence.
He would have had a great career if he hadn't robbed that train. So sweet that he came back to the UK to see his wife but unfortunately he got arrested.
kerrygordon I respect your views. I thought it was rubbish, listen to phil sing Suppers Ready, with Genesis. He does not have a motown voice. I found going back, bland and boring.
Owen Ltd it was for himself and Motown fans who love the original sound. It was perfect. Take a look at the documentary behind the scenes of the amazing recording session. It paid tribute to the acts that he loved when he was much younger.
kerrygordon Yes I have watched the documentary, very impressive with the drum sticks taped to his hand, I just don't think the album was good, singing was bland very bland....that said....the guy is a genius
I really like you Phil. Deeply inspired by yout music as a musician and I thank you for all what youve done with Genesis and solo. And your drumming is still TONS better than whatever a machine can come up with, even a 808
Thanks so much for sharing. Fits in well with 2 articles we've written: 6 Awesome Advancements Genesis/Gabriel gave to the World & Roland, the Bisexual Drum Machine. :)

Thank you for this. A quick constructive criticism comment: it sounds like the shotgun and lav microphones are out of sync by a frame or so. The EQ is also hollow and flat.
I was on that tour. Poor Genesis were booed and Phil shouted "Don't you like Duke?" from the stage. Everyone was expecting old Genesis tunes. I was quite pitty.

Let me summarise this man, One of my all time favourite artists in the world. True legend
It's hard to find interviews with him going into details about music like this.
I get a kick hearing him talk about these machines in such detail and with such enthusiasm. Always inspires me to write more demos.
Me too. I wish he'd talk more about his drums, set up and technique.
I saw Phil, I put a like. And now, just watching and listening one of the biggest artist in the world. Thanks for your live in Paris 🙌
This man the goat. He defined the 80s imo
He was a big contributor for sure.
The man of the 1980’s in terms of popular music for sure. No question. 👍
I'm still trying to figure out why you called him a goat 🐐. You probably meant to say God. Oh well, it's funnier that way.

The handclaps on "no reply" are 808
Brian Davis “Me & Sarah Jane” is a CR-78.

@@SPAZZOID100 Not doubting you but how can you tell?
What a cool cat.
I remember one of Phil C. songs that was always playing when I was in training at JFK.
I love to hear an artist discuss his method(s)!
We love you Phil Collins. I am watching Buster and you are so talented. Xo💋
he has to have his own movie about his life and A true story as a drummer and a singer
Very interesting! I could listen to him for ages!
Great interview...interesting hearing phil's thoughts and recollection of these iconic drum machines.
Happy 808 day ! ❤️
Amazing artist with a great memory for details... can't wait for new stuff
I'm watching this at 8:08 a.m.
The CR-78 didn't replace the drummer but the Linn LM-1 did.

i played some rhythms in my demo and more soon :)
Genesis-Phil forever
Dude I want to become the grandpa that talks about drum machines

As a guitarist I use the WD-40 all the time. Idone some of my best stuff with it.
He would have had a great career if he hadn't robbed that train. So sweet that he came back to the UK to see his wife but unfortunately he got arrested.
Is his nickname 'Buster' by chance? Have you seen his film noir piece called 'Calliope'? It is fascinating, surprising, and very entertaining.
I really hope this genius would make another album, not that going back crap, his own way of playing and great drumming, he can still play......
Going Back was genius reproduction of the Motown sound with the Funk Brothers

He’s also wrong about them not being hooked up to anything to time them up - they had DIN Sync.

I think you missed the point.
808 the Dangerous Drumkit lol
I think Genesis used a drum machine also prior to Abacab on Duke (on the "Duchess" track), was that the 808 or a different machine?
808 did not exist when “duke” was recorded.
@@SPAZZOID100 Right, apparently it was the CR-78
