I am so pleased this film was treated with the integrity and production value such an iconic invention deserves. my hope is that is spawns a movement of documentaries focused on other seminal electronic instruments and their legacy like the Prophet 5, the MPC, the controversial DX-7, or the sacred Fairlight. It's a ripe time in history for it.
"It had its own groove" "you can't recreate that groove" bla bla bla... Of course you fucking can. It is not the groove of the 808 that was special, it was the SOUND!
YoYo .Kidz I didn't want to believe for myself, but then lately I worked with a friend who is really good with his classic MPC. Had to admit. It freaking grooves like hell
YoYo .Kidz Not sure if you have played with a TR808 long enough, due to the analog circuitry (randomness and inefficiency), TR808 has its own groove especially if things get busy ... if you use the internal sequencer of TR808 to program, say a kick drum, even a straight 1/4 notes will sound differently. Especially in a full pattern with a few different instruments, one may notice the length, dynamics and sound quality of each instrument are not the same. One instrument sound will interfere with another by drawing more or less current & voltage in the analog circuit, some strange swing feels or groove will eventually be created. This is something not achievable by computer or newer (more efficient and effective) equipment.
Happy birthday John aka MC GLOBE! You don't get enough credit for the classics you pioneered! Love you and wish you the best always! You are the True Legend and innovator! Blessings always! Mad love from the Chi to the BX!
Its just so weird, most of hiphops bass and drums come from manipulated 808 samples. This one machine spawned the most popular music genre of today and its samples are used by every producer.
From Roland's own blog : One of the first available units was picked up by the hugely innovative Yellow Magic Orchestra who would use the 808 in a live performance in December of 1980, while Australian producer Mark Moffatt has been officially recognized as the first to put the 808 on record with The Monitors’ 1981 track ‘Nobody Told Me’
***** Egyptian Lover is a Legendary 808 producer and he deserve to be in Pharell position on this film. Pharell hasn't rocked on an 808, maybe 808 samples. No current producer's face should be on this project, period. Pharell could be the interviewer but not the interviewee.
Markus Arike having a 808 or access to one and making most of your music on one is two different things. If I made a movie like this, I would keep it 100 and put artist that "truly" represent the history.
Markus Arike "The Neptunes (Pharrell Willaims and Chad Hugo) who are credited with contributing the sound for many successful hip hop, R&B and pop artists in the late-1990s and 2000s." THANK YOU for making my point. The 808 was doing it's thang in the 80's, not late 90's and 2000's, only super duper funky fresh producers from the Golden Era should be featured in this film. PERIOD.... Machines "like" the 808 doesn't cut it.
friendofCHAKA I suppose they could fit the whole circuit board on an integrated circuit, but Roland doesn't seem to be interested in that. Roland produced analog drum machines and synths during a time when digital was virtually cost prohibitive, the inverse is true today.
Atlantic Records is making it impossible to stream/download this movie online. Will we ever be able to watch this movie legitimately, or will I have to just have to pirate it from somewhere? Gt it together Atlantic Records, if there is a demand for a product you have, then just put it out here for consumption, you goons!

I'll be waiting here for you, knock on the door twice please And keep believing what you want, if only I could see your face when you're watching this documentary and see the Dewaele brothers (AKA 2manydjs) beeing interviewed :D Greetings from Europe
George Munoz Yes, why is that such a dumb question? I know that obviously the sounds come from the 808, but the exact beats as strung together in the trailer sound familiar, like I've heard them actually in a song.
I've been sentient since the invention of the 808 and it's very rare that I've ever heard actual music being assisted by this technology. By "actual music", I mean formal structure. Most of you will not know what I'm talking about. Google "music structure bridge" and be educated. Rappin over a beat aint music bit$hes.
RIP, Ikutaro Kakeshi, founder of Roland, inventor of the TR-808, and the most influential musical pioneer of the last few decades.
"That Bass have so much Punch and so much Force"

With that line-up, it promises to be the definitive documentary on this classic device

Definitely a movie for old heads anybody born in the 90's and past that won't remember a time before 808

That doesn't make sense, during playback, only when recording.
Bla bla MY CHEAP CRAP IS THE SAME BECAUSE I CAN'T DO BETTER bla bla... 808 is 808, other things are other things. Deal with it.

They should make a documentary on how Roland failed to capitalize on its drum machines and synthesizers from the past.
friendofCHAKA Yeah, and call it, 'Where's The Jupiter 8, Assholes?'
Roland corp never checked ebay prices of their vintage synths apparently.
Would not be cost effective.
friendofCHAKA I suppose they could fit the whole circuit board on an integrated circuit, but Roland doesn't seem to be interested in that. Roland produced analog drum machines and synths during a time when digital was virtually cost prohibitive, the inverse is true today.

Kanye uses samples. Not a real 808. And he has zero talent.
WTF... where is Egyptian Lover, "the king of 808"? He should have been the first name on the list!
I finally watched it, but it wasn't what I expected.
They could do that much better, especially for iconic device like TR-808..
Why did not Roland revive this classic machine! All they gave us recently was the plastic-y TR-8..
Michael Björk it's fine
