Jhope always shows respect and admiration for the people and culture which inspired him to dance. a real dancer who pays homages and knows his background !!!
Yo, this doc totally revolutionized hip hop dance. Quiet as kept, everybody modified they style after watchin' this doc back in the day. These brothers were definitely original.
These originators showed us there is no separation between dancing House or Hip Hop. They we're full blown artists lyricist poets dancers fashion creators community teachers for the youth!
i look at hip hop today, i dont reckonize it.. its a breath of fresh air to come back to this piece of history and see the glory of the 90's capsulized.
One of the dopest hip hop docs to date. This changed how we danced to hip hop and house music back in the 90’s. This was a huge inspiration and influence to all the dance crews here in Houston TX.
Thanks for this. Though this was an ill dream when I caught it once when it aired on PBS in the 90’s. Have not seen it since until now. Super inspiring then and still is now
This truly captured that moment in time '92 was a great time to be a young adult it was kind'a sad and melancholy the way Rubber Band ended the doc felt like watching your childhood walk away, R.I.P. Kito, Voodoo Ray, Angie and any others from the culture we lost along the way🕊️🙏🏾🕊️🙏🏾🕊️🙏🏾💃🏾🕺🏾......🥺😢😂
I remember I went to see zhigie perform at a club in the BX. I was displaying all my moves on the dance floor when uptown bounce rakin in the dough was blasting on the speakers. I use to wear alot of polo.. hill & girbraud some times guess Jean jackets. I was into this thing for real. I was like one of the 1st sporting good shit in Washington heights Manhattan back in 92. Epic era.i miss it a lot.
Not for nothing this is why Nyc is legendary so many amazing Dancers shined from the deepest poorest hoods of the 5 boroughs God Bless to these brothers amazing spirits of creativity
Proud to say i know mostly everyone in this documentary and it definitely is a classic Best dancers in the world word on everything i love Rubberband Kito
Came herr to learn more about hip-hop roots after j-hope posted about it on his insta. Tbh I wonder if he is going to pay homage to it during his upcoming performance on New Year Rockin' Eve, after all he is going to perform Chicken Noodle Soup and there he is talking about his underground dance roots.
I feel there's a very special connection between all the different danceforms within the HipHop culture umbrella... I see this ancient New Style dance and I can feel some influences from the Popping or even Locking dance too and classic party rock moves that were incorporated later all the different forms, the house dance and the new style. Every dance kept evolving on its own vibe and inspired by the different rythms they were danced to. I really appreciate the documentary. I really feel that just the way you can enjoy listening to both rap, house or funk music, learning the traditional dance foundation from each danceform within the HipHop may also enrich your dance skills and broaden your perspective. Peace.
@@yahirmolina8488 Newstyle just means New York style.. The most famous dances representative of this are House , Party Dance aka Freestyle and Bboying.
Les Twins definitely got alot of Their Style and Highly Influence by The Moptop Misfits Crew I saw This when I was A Teen and Me Our Crew was Called Many Styles We Use 2 tear it up in New Orleans along with the Dragon Masters Bboy Crew Those was Remarkable Times! Stay Blessed My Brothers and Sisters in JESUS CHRIST Always
PBS doesnt even have it in their archives. I tried a few years ago to contact them. I even tried to hit up the Producers, but no reply. I'd say talk to Budha Stretch about it..
serpentscientist hence the need to get Amos Wilson on this and start to control our archives, rather than continue to endure these implicit dismissals of our heritage and history
Directed by Diane Martel, director of Robin Thicke's Blurred Lines video, the Beats Pill commercial, and so much more! Google her! Wonder whether the team in the Blurred Lines clip checked this out? Very fine everybody!
Dope to see the whole video on youtube. I happen to have a copy of this video that was handed down on to me. I wish more people knew about this and about this style of dance before people started calling it house.
"I wish more people knew about this and about this style of dance before people started calling it house." Some of those dancers were House music dancers. Most of the others were New School Hip Hop dancers, some call it freestyle.
Frank White The House Dance culture began in NYC and many of the dancers in the video contributed to the culture in which they merged Hip-Hop with House hence the birth of Hip-House and notable House dance styles like Jacking. These dancers, along with Ejoe, Brian Green, Marjory Smarth (the baddest female house dancer of her time), Terry from Brooklyn, Caleaf (who’s in the video) and countless others are the creators of House Dance culture in New York City. While Lofting and Footwork were initially danced to Disco, Jacking was purely made for House. In the 80’s-90’s, Dancing wasn’t just a hobby or recreational, it was a lifestyle for many of us in New York, especially club goers.
Beat Activated This style of dance is called freestyle. You did whatever you wanted to Hip Hop music. It didn’t have to be one particular style of dance. No choreography, no rules, and no limits to your style. You just had to be creative, danced dope, and be battle ready if you got in a cipher. In truth, it’s just NYC Hip-Hop dance. If you weren’t a Bboy/Bgirl, Popper, or Locker, this was a common way of dancing to Hip-Hop in New York parties and clubs during the late 80’s and 90’s. Freestyling to House music is what created Jacking, which is why you’re noticing some House moves like spins and lofting (dolphin dives etc.) in the video. I’m not sure what Peter Paul and Caleaf are dancing to since the video is dubbed when they’re in the club, but they could be dancing to House music at some point, since House was sometimes played in Hip-Hop clubs back then.
YO!You KNOW what SHOUT OUT to the brother's who put this video together i saw one of THOSE brothers downtown Brooklyn N.Y. in like early 90's and knew he danced GOING into a sneakers store on Nevins i want to say in Forte Green across from Albee square mall..im from Ct i love Brooklyn i love New York period but THEIR right about Brooklyn so many different flavors its different their NOW though gentrification..but this fly because they SHOWED creative side of black Life interaction with the youth on a positive note NOW everyone when cameras are on want to show gang affiliations More too black life.. whenever THEY show black life in New York City or any WHERE ELSE everyone gang related its sad we KNOW that there's many different aspects TO black life but YEAH.. Brooklyn WAS LIKE THEY SAID SHOUT OUT to all the boroughs Harlem Brooklyn Bronx Queens Manhattan
I want to learn the 87-92 era of hip hop dancing. Sean and Kenny from the T.C.F crew in the Kool G Rap 'road to the riches' video. Scoop and Scrap. I like the moves in the Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch 'Good Vibrations' video. Biz Markie 'Goin' off' video etc. The music videos don't show much of the dances for me to copy. But if I can find footage from that era of a live performance, then the dances are more visible. There are some lessons online also. I need to build up a library of late 80s hip hop dance footage.
Look up Flattop, Buddha Stretch, Brian Green, Henry Link, Caleaf, Majory Smarth, and Peter Paul if you want a good place to start your collection of footage
Jhope always shows respect and admiration for the people and culture which inspired him to dance. a real dancer who pays homages and knows his background !!!

"I wish more people knew about this and about this style of dance before people started calling it house."
Some of those dancers were House music dancers. Most of the others were New School Hip Hop dancers, some call it freestyle.
House dancing was another form not taken from hip hop dancing.
