Always so honored to have you break down my content! This was a special one for many reasons. If you liked this format I have some terrifically fun ones with the insanely talented Brian Hull, but ya Whitney is filthy talented, def check out her other singing work! THANKS FOR SHOWING MY WORK TO YOUR AWESOME COMMUNITY!!! LOVES! ❤️
Peter, thanks for all the awesome work you do, it’s amazing, been one of my fave videos for years, and I hope you do more with Whitney in the future! Just curious, have you heard Geoff Castellucci’s version of “Misty Mountains” and what you thought of it? Hope to see you working with Voiceplay someday! You’re my favorite solo A Cappella singer, and they’re my favorite A Cappella group (though it’s REALLY close with Home Free).
I can't count the number of times I have watched this on both Peter Hollens and Whitney Avalons channels here on RUclips, this is one of my favourite RUclips videos of all time and this reaction with the breakdown of the vocals is so wonderful to watch!
Oh my! I've been hooked on acapella music for many years though Voiceplay, Pentatonix, Home Free and of course you, mr. Peter Hollens. I still don't know how in the world this video could be released in 2017 and I've totally missed it until the technical goddess Elisabeth reacted to it in August 2021. As I said on the original video; this is my favourite Hollens video out there, and I hope to see more of the "filthy talented Whitney Avalon" doing collaborations with you. Thanks for filling my life with music and videos which puts a smile on my face
17:21 That distortion comes from her briefly engaging her ventricular folds. She displays crazy control of her voice in this part of the cover. What a beast 😲
Absolutely :) He's giving me hecking goosebumps everytime I listen to him singing that! Though the whole of his latest album, all the Disney villain covers he did and one of my favourites) the Prince of Egypt covers he did with Caleb Hyles (especially "The Plagues" and "All I ever wanted" and "Playing with the big boys") would be on my list of suggestions as well 🥰
Peter Hollens' fans *_demanded_* a full cover of 'Hellfire' which he did a while later. Its pretty good. Hard to beat the original but his is probably my second favorite version of the song. He had also done a full version of 'Be Prepared' and, if you liked _this one_ you'll LOVE his "Halloween Movie Medley" He covers most of his incredible range in that video. (not all of it, I've heard him sing bass notes...the guys a freak'n high tenor and he can go lower than ME, I'm a low baritone for petes sake. )
A few people in chat were recommending Jonathan Young's incredible villain covers, which are great. But if you were going to do a react to Jonathan Young, I'd want to recommend 'Jonathan Young & Lauren Babic - "You're Gonna Go Far Kid" (Offspring Cover)'. That way you could also react to Lauren Babic and her awesome vocal talent as well!
This is what I love about Peter. You can watch his videos over and over and see new things by paying attention to various other bits. Also, if you watch enough of Peter's videos, it's a who's-who of talent on RUclips. :)
A number of groups have covered Disney villains. This is my absolute favorite one. Peter Hollens is simply fantastic and too few people know about him. And too few people give him credit for his vocal range. As usual, I learned a lot from your analysis. This pairing was great--they had great chemistry and seemed to have fun "playing" with each other. This was not only vocally pleasing to listen to, but also fun to watch.
I don't think any vocal coach has reacted to Paint and his songs After Ever After, they are super fun Acapella Disney songs that take some really fun turns
Another great analysis! The way you shine a light on the techniques being used really helps to elevate the listening experience, and it’s really exciting to start to understand and identify those techniques as they are bing used while listening. Thanks Elizabeth!
Check out Peter’s Halloween medley, his covers of “The Hanging Tree” and “The Dawn Will Come” with his singing Patreon patrons, “Lullaby of Woe” and “Vokul Fen Mah” with Malukah, “Greensleeves” with Tim Foust, and the Hobbit Drinking Song Medley with Hank Green, they’re all fantastic!
Wow! That was fun! I agree- these two really brought the songs to life. I was uncertain about the "Brady Bunch" screen set at first. Breaking the walls to join each other was a hoot. Great way to end a day with a smile. Thanks, Elizabeth, you made the day complete. :)
Love this medley, love your break down, but most of all, love your passion and excitement. It was really cool to see you reacting to a video that I enjoyed so much and see you enjoying it too and helping me put into words the things I was hearing. Thank you! 💕
Hi Elizabeth, this is my first time watching this video and I loved the performance. Peter and Whitney are two excellent singers, and they were both amazing. I loved that everyone is singing in front of their colorful zoom backgrounds, and then you have Gaston going on a village tour w/ Lefou...Typical. Thank you, Elizabeth!!! 💙
As everyone else has said you have to react to Jonathan Young's Disney covers. Hellfire and Bells of Notre Dame are outstanding. The sense of foreboding they give is spine tingling
I've seen you be really impressed by how in one of Peter's song he had over three hundred people sing, so I think you might want to check out *The Longest John's "Wellerman community project", there were 6500 people in the video!*
I would absolutely love to see her react to Jonathan Young's Hellfire cover!! Or even his covers to phantom of the opera with Malinda. Side note: really hoping she does a reaction to Geoff's recent Misty Mountains cover. The low notes are insane and it's the best thing to listen to when you wanna escape to Middle Earth.
You should listen to more Whitney stuff. You will love her signing. Her songs are amazing and the analysis would be so fun. Her singing is so much fun, beautiful and blows me away. She is so versatile.
I’ve listened to this so many times, yet never gave the background music the attention it deserved. Thank you for expanding my (already high) appreciation of this performance.
Whitney is an awesome singer as well as a comic genius! She has that true Broadway charisma and versatility. Recommend her Chicago/Fantastic Beasts mashup to highlight her singing chops! The collab with her and Peter is just magic!
Let me say up front I love Voiceplay. I was unfamiliar with Ashley Diane, but she was fantastic here. But I am a huge Fiddler on the Roof Fan and this was a little too "jazzed up" for me. That is not to say the vocals weren't stellar--they absolutely were. Just would have preferred a more traditional arrangement. Would love to see your reaction to it!
No it's not. Never heard "my mother told me or "This is Halloween?" "Mean one mr. Gringe?" They are far way better the "rich girl/man" they have a new one to. "Hoist the colours."
Peter is the highest master of this vignettes style 🔥. He has an amazing bunch of these epic medleys. One of my very favorites is the Epic Christmas Movie Medley. I hope you analyze it soon! I love the multiple collaborations there, but Ash totally steals the show 💖
Absolutely wonderful to see you break down the vocals like this and I absolutely adore the voices of Peter Hollens and Whitney Avalon singing together like this!

Many seem to recommend Jonathan Young's cover of '"Hellfire", but I would love to see you react to the original, with Tony Jay. The only version I can listen to over and over again. I can see why he got the role as Frollo. Freaking magic. I feel that he seems to be the only one who really got the character, no mention the song. This medley - all in all - was lovely, though. Well sung and amusing. Mother Knows Best, Poor Unfortunate Souls and Hellfire is absolutely the best villain songs, with the first and the last one being extra powerful because they feel a bit too real.

This was a great video, thank you for making it! I've been a fan of both these creators for ages but my knowledge of musical technique is pretty superficial so it's wonderful to have someone so passionate and learned in the field give a bit of a glimpse into how they're doing what they're doing. It's fascinating to see some of the complexity and difficulty beneath the surface there, because the two of them make it look so damned easy. It was cool to hear you talk about character in voice and inhabiting the song, because something that really strikes me about these two is the way they perform the songs, rather than just singing them - they come at the material with an actor's sensibility. (I remember reading something similar about Frank Sinatra, that he approached a song like an actor delivering lines rather than a singer delivering notes, which shaped his whole style, but I'm not really familiar enough with him to comment.) You talked a bit about the transitions and the balance of songs and styles. This might be a bit of a long shot, but if you enjoyed that you might be interested in "The Ship Song Project" from a few years back. It's a collaboration of a dozen or so artists on Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds' "the Ship Song", with a whole range of singing styles and genres, that still works amazingly well as a single song. The video's on RUclips if it sounds interesting. Thanks again for such an enjoyable and educational reaction.
I have watched the original so many times and I always find myself watching Whitney from the beauty and the beast because she is funny to watch while listening to the great music.
Please. Postmodern Jukebox + Maiya Sykes. Boulevard of Broken Dreams. I cannot stress how talented she is. The cover is sublime. I would love to see your reaction.
Whitney did a very nice Tribute to Our Favourite Disney Princes - LEIA ( after Disney got LucasFilms she got to be a Disney Princess) based on the Melody of Memories from CATS

A pity I can only give one thumb's up on this reply!
Whitney’s Broadway musical background really shines through in this video
I adore Whitney Avalon, and her princess rap battles are so much fun.
Whitney Avalon is a gem. The PRBs are great fun, of course, but her other work is wonderful as well.
Never heard of Whitney before but her voice sounds like she has some Broadway stage training

(I remember reading something similar about Frank Sinatra, that he approached a song like an actor delivering lines rather than a singer delivering notes, which shaped his whole style, but I'm not really familiar enough with him to comment.)
You talked a bit about the transitions and the balance of songs and styles.
Whitney also did a Harry Potter version of all that jazz from Chicago called no maj
I love Whitney's take on Cruella Devill
My kids love Peter Hollens medleys and he partners with the best!
I've always loved Scar's song.
