- "Snow Storm" - 9 Musical illustrations after Pushkin's novel for orchestra (1975) Written as film music to the 1975 Russian movie "Metel", or in English, "The Snowstorm"
by Georgy Sviridov
Pure gold... This piece has brought me so many tears of joy and beauty.
❤ same
I met Georgy Sviridov back in the early 1990's when he was in South Carolina and I got his autograph on a flyer which has a photo of him on it. I need to get it framed and hang it on my wall.
NOTE: I didn't meet this composer in the early 90's but one with a similar name. I will get back with his correct name. Sorry about this.
Funny thing, I'm a huge gamer and I had played Metal Gear Solid 1 and 2 in the past, but I didn't find out about Sviridov through the whole MGS thing... I found The Snow Storm - Waltz and fell in love with his music while looking for Russian classical music on youtube.
So MGS did not bring one gamer to Sviridov's music... although, ok Tetris did bring me to love Russian music in general... lol
Mr. Sviridov. You're above any ratings, you're above any questions. You're THE LAST GREAT COMPOSITOR OF MY COUNTRY but i hope that in one happy day we'll have another great sons of Mother Russia, to create such beautiful music, as you did. I pray for you and your family. Forever yours and Russia's Son.

Spice ceba to all my Russian friends for giving us the best classical music and ballet that the world has ever known.
Thanks for posting this genius-beautiful Russian music. With all my respect to Japanese people, it is not only purely Russian as such, it is purely geniunely Russian :-)

Simply beautiful!
Chef d’œuvre absolut!
this is very, very good
Thank you so much for uploading the complete "Snowstorm". It was the first piece I played (or, at least, tried) in a big orchestra back in school times, and I really loved it, but it´s hard to get here and this recording is awesome!! Thanks!
thank you for posting!!!
i played it in orchestra when i was i bit younger! nostalgie
nice - I did not know this. It seems I love any kind of Russian sounding music.
Superbe de belle chanson!
Shortly before the release of Portable Ops, someone on the internet discovered a song by classical Russian composer Georgy Vasilevich Sviridov, named "The Winter Road." The Metal Gear community was in an uproar at how similar the song was to the "Metal Gear Solid Main Theme", and requested the song be shown to Hideo Kojima. Eventually, a

snake? SNAAAAAKE!!!
Partly 'copied' or not, I consider 'The Snow Storm' as a master work, written by one of the greatest composers of the 20th century!
I just love this music and can listen to it, again and again!
Cordially,
Geert Dehoux, pianist.
Beautiful piece.
By that I didn't mean that nobody would have heard of this without Hideo, I mean that people who would otherwise never have heard of Sviridov would be introduced to the melody through MGS. I feel confident in saying the majority of console gamers are not well versed in classical or orchestral music, but I could of course be wrong.
I should have phrased it better in my original comment, but it's two years too late for that, now.
Remarkable music! Very heartfelt and the tragayuschaya soul ! Russian reasons !

OK, can I know why people consider this to pe "copied". I mean, what was the original source if copied? Just let me know. Apreciate that. Thanks, guys )
Ah, just stop complaining guys! At first I was saying it sounded nothing like the MGS theme too, but after a while I came to like it. Tappy Iwase clearly took some of the best parts of the song for the MGS theme, but heck, I'm glad he did because both versions are beautiful!
Spirit of Russia
Welcome fellow Soldiers Without Borders and Decembrists!
Oh snap!
interesting you really can hear Metal Gear Solid
I have to agree no relation jus that little moment but its a drag.. that song is wat make MGS a living LEGEND.. long live MGS!
RUclips video emerged of a group of people showing the song to Kojima, who gave a very surprised reaction.[1] Eventually in an issue of the video game magazine EGM it was revealed via an interview with Norihiko Hibino that the theme was indeed changed due to the fact that "Konami had legal problems with Russian composers who said [they] stole their music."[2]
Darude - Snowstorm
Russian Music by Sviridov!
Kept you waiting.
@joshcripe42 that track atomicfirehead refers to is called "Metal Gear 2 - Advance Immediately" it really does sound identical to the rambo theme. I love the metal gear games honestly, I've only played the ones that matter to the story (Metal Gear 1, Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, and Metal Gear Solid 1-4) But just because I've played them all and enjoyed them, doesn't mean I'm a fan. So from the beginning of the Metal Gear story, are you saying the whole first game is homage of rambo?
@proman84 There isn't a whole lot on the internet about the song's history, but from what I gathered it was originally composed by Tappy Iwase, and then remixed by Harry Gregson Williams for MGS2. Honestly, I think the MGS2 theme sounds more similar because it's orchestrated, MGS1 is a techno, electronica-esque song, and it couldn't be more different.
Sergei Kursanov has transcribed this piano and it awesome!
great
Kept you waiting, huh?
this is good....isn't it? "BIG BOSS"
The sad thing is that many people say it sounds nothing alike, that is what gets me. maybe it is the drums in the background of the MGS one, but it is clear that these things are to much alike to be just a random happening .
I wouldn't call it right out plagiarization, but borderlining it absolutely. But any musician will want their work to be heard and appreciated, and MGS brought the theme song out to the people, and people who want to do a little bit of research will find this composition, and they might not have found it if not for mgs. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have.
Yeah, I never heard THAT score until the second games. The music in MGS1 was COMPLETELY different.
Everything awesome in this world is created by Slavs. Imho :)
From Tesla to Sviridov, and everyone and thing before after and in between those two :P
großen Komponisten
"MGS brought the theme song out to the people" - this sounds funny to me. Brought to people? To who? To 5 000 000 gamers who played Metal Gear 4? i mean come on man! Swiridovs work was heard by every person in USSR and if u dont know the population of USSR was 300 millions. This was played on music lessons in every soviet school ;-) MGS soundtrack is a great POP product, one of the best soundtracks, but this here is ART and a classic.
Staz WHAT THE FUCK, ITS NOT POP FOR CHRSTS SAKE, JEEZ, HE EVEN SAYED IT HIMSELF!
Agree bro. Just don't forget say something for the source, give credit! Don't admit it is your purely work if u copy from others, that's all.
Peace.

@rhcpandsum41
There is no Russian version. The MGS theme is Sviridov's original safe for the differences in orchestration. Now if only someone called Yoko Kanno out on her PERPETUAL ripoffs
God, some people are stupid, Tappi didn't 'RIP OFF' the music, just took a lot of influence from the harmonic structure of the piece. The actual melodies are completely different and there's a whole lot more added on top too; it's just the silhouette that's the same, if you will.
EVERY COMPOSER THAT'S EVER LIVED HAS DONE EXACTLY THE SAME THING WITH EVERY COMPOSITION THEY'VE WRITTEN.
It's nothing new
Look.
It's not in the Metal Gear Saga track.
Hell, it was pulled from the MGS3 theme in the 20th Anniversary CD. They replaced the portion at the end with "There's Room for Only One Big Boss." You're wrong.
Why is music different from a story, in terms of copyright?
I did listen.
watch?v=WFeu5KlBI3k
That's the MGS3 theme, but at 5:12 they removed the part that sounded similar to Sviridov's work and replcaed it with "There's Room for Only One Big Boss." This is the only version that has been released after the Russian reporters brought it to his attention.
Listen to 5:12 of the old version and it has the real theme from MGS1 and 2 that we all know and love.
Metal Gear Saga lacks this. It merely has the new 0:00-5:12 part exclusive to MGS3.
its a popular video game series by konami
the games main theme bears a striking similarity to this piece. :)
The music for the film "Snowstorm" based on the story of A. S. Pushkin was written by Georgy Sviridov in 1964.
konami was founded in 1969
What else are most games but modern fairy tales?
The ONE motif everyone is talking about is from the original game. Gregson-Williams adopted it for the second game, he did not create it.
I love MGS Theme. But IMO, Tappy the creator should at least put some credits to this 1974 russian composer!
You're getting into the ugly "Art or Not" debate about video games. Don't go there; it's not safe, I assure you. And as the person you're responding to stated, it's likely that your average console gamer likely wouldn't have ever heard of this beautiful music before. I grew up listening to classical music, so it's nothing new to me, but I know for a fact that your average person outside of the U.S.S.R. likely wouldn't have ever heard of Sviridov.
Since the MGS theme doesn't sound more than 50% like the song, it really can't be considered plagiarism. Yoko Kanno's Big Boys is a Jimmy Hart arrangement of the Pirates of the Caribbean theme but no one's complaining. The Target sounds almost exactly like the Tiefighter theme mixed with some other space opera themes.
Give it back!!! It was ours!!!
I'm not giving you anything, seeing as you can't even find out that the MGS theme has been put into MGS4.
It is not titled as the theme, and is simply remixed, but it's still the MGS song and it's in the soundtrack. The song is called Metal Gear Saga, go listen to it before you try and argue even that fact.
@EzEXEgaming You're on the wrong video. Look up "Axis of Awesome - 4 Chords"
first games was written (for computers, no matter goverment science super computers or home personal computers (like IBM-PC, Commodore or Amiga)) word "game console" doesnt even exists. It's was late 70's.
This reminds me a little bit Metal Gear Solid theme :)
Metel Gear Solid
@AnOnlyThird
Yeah its not a direct copy. Probably could say inspired by.
There is no point in debating it, Kojima already accepted that its a plagiarism. Just hear MGS4 rendition of the theme, they took out the similiar parts.
I'm not really sure what to think.
One part of me is like "Well, that sounds oddly concidental to not be a rip off."
And the other part of me is thinking "Well, there's obviously so many notes and chords and ways to arrange them in orchestras. Coincidence, lawl, more then just one note is different, it's not a Vanilla Ice."
So, Meh. I wish they kept it, regardless. Because, growing up, you fell in love with the theme. I just can't find myself enjoying the russian version.
Tappy Iwase was just one person. You are thinking of KCE Japan Sound Team.
A little similar, yeah. But the feel is entirely different than the MGS theme. And it's most definitely not plagiarism.
@schoolispiss I'm not sure I agree with you. They were certainly heavily inspired by it, but it's not an exact copy. They took the signature theme from The Snowstorm and re-recorded it with a tempo and a soundscape that would fit MGS. So if the music crew behind MGS plagiarized Sviridov, then I might say Robocop plagiarizes the new testament. It's certainly inspired by the story of Jesus, but translated into a futuristic, dystopic setting while retaining large portions of the theme
Did you know G C D makes many modern songs possible? Who knows who wrote the original GCD.
that's sad then.
hmm, the song sounds is kinda similar to the mgs theme, but with a more lighter and peaceful tone.
.....right, so this song which is nearly IDENTICAL IN MUSICAL MAKE-UP just HAPPENS to sound like the score of a man, who BEFORE the Metal Gear theme hadn't had as much success as OTHER more WELL KNOWN composers in Hollywood....right...
Maybe because the law says so.
Your opinion on this matter means nothing when professionals have investigated the songs, and said that there is no plagiarism.
MGS? MGC? MGES? MGEC?
Metal Gear Solid.
Legally speaking... They can take inspiration from already existing works. So long as at least a third of the work is changed, it is legal. If less than a third is changed the yes, it is plagiarism and illegal
well the are Different Enought to consider Inspiration Only because from this Song to the Metal Gear Solid Theme and its Remixes (from Sons of Libery, Snake Eater and Portable Ops) at Least 3/7 of it is Way Changed
unfortuneatly browsing the web it seems like it might have:(
no, sadly...it sounds a lot like the MGS theme..that sucks
but this is really beautiful ... :}
Good artists borrow, great artists steal.
...and mediocre artist use that excuse.
and pseudointellectuals don't know the context and true intent of the quote
