TheJespeon It really is. Being called winter road, when the first Metal Gear Solid was set in Snow banked Alaska :) The first MGS is my favorite perhaps because of that atmosphere, and the nostalgia of playing it over a winter break for the first time with snow outside.
I feel exactly the same! I got it for Christmas and in between playing it on the Play Station I would be playing outside with the snow falling down. It was like actually living in the game's universe. I was about 9 or 10 at the time and this was maximum immersion.
Tappi "TAPPY" Iwase who composed this theme was actually a contractor by Konami and wasn't apart of the team. It wasn't in Kojima's remit to check for copyright material as that is what the composer was hired to do lol. Also back then copyright use wasn't as strict as it is today.
Am I the only one who thinks it would've been cool if Kojima had somehow licensed this song and included it as a tape in MGS5? Would've been a nice way to "wrap up" the whole issue, and would also be historically accurate.
@@suphriez2806 This isn't just a passing resemblance. It's very obvious it's a remix with some extra artistic liberty. But the remix has almost the exact same overall implication and melodic story telling. The most notable difference being the tempo phrasing of 2/4 for the original and 4/4 for the final. I think they were after the MGS money. I don't know how much was settled but it makes sense that they wouldn't want to have any further shame fall upon them. The Russians are used as partial antagonists in most MGS games too (for good reason), so the idea of saying "Hey, we made a game where you're the enemy, again, and remember that music we stole before? Yeah. We used it. Again." ... well I think you understand now.
Most of the song was soft, quiet, and somber. But towards the end it just goes full star wars and just BLASTS you with a full orchestra. Fucking awesome.
I imagine at the end of a MGS movie, Snake in Alaska chopping up wood by his house while he deals with PTSD from the event, this music plays, the camera zooms out from an aerial shot and reveals someone coming to his house on a sledge with huskies to inform him on an urgent mission. At 2:19, the screen goes to black with Metal Gear Solid written in the red text.

Holy crap, everythings fits! In the game Snatcher (from Kojima) there is a weapon like pollen called "Snow 9" and this is the "9th" piece called "snowstorm"
I always felt there was a very Russian vibe to the original MGS ost. Especially due to the choir chants. This piece was clearly used by Tappy for inspiration. So many similarities.
This is MGS theme, and i'm not even pissed at Tappy Iwase for ripping it off. It's really amazing, and i'm proud that this Russian composition made it into one of the best franchises ever made (But I wish they would credit the original composer and keep using it) This actually would fit great into a MGS game about Boss's times in WW2, if Kojima Productions would ever consider making one.
What I find most amazing is how things like this are found. I mean, with the advent of the internet, it's become all but impossible at this point to get away with plagiarism. Music, movies, text, all of it can be digitized from recorded history and kept alive through it. It's sad that Iwase clearly borrowed from it, but at the same time he made it his own unique piece. Still, proper credit should be given to Sviridov in future updates.

If it was just the one part at the beginning, I'd agree that it could plausibly just have been a coincidence. But this and the MGS theme coincide in two distinct places (the start and 0:40), which (to me) seems very unlikely unless one theme was based on the other.

The only way you could deny the extreme similaries is if you are tone deaf or being deliberately obtuse... There are parts that are similar. But the main thing you must look at is the timing, the key its played in, and the whole song as a whole. Neither MGS or Sviridov copied each other.

I obviously can't speak for anyone besides myself, but I'd like to believe Mr. Sviridov would have appreciated the coincidence (or "homage" - in an effort to not call it downright plagiarism, although it could damn well be) and would have been happy with a nice licensing fee. He would have been known by many a MGS fan all around the world ("officially", with Konami's endorsement), his music would have garnered new appreciation, and we'd still have, in my opinion, the best MGS theme out of all. It's very saddening to know we'll never find that out, since he died in '98, same year as the release of MGS1. Obviously the issue now rests with either his children / immediate family and we all know how sometimes family can be very protective of a relative's intellectual property. There might have been new developments but I haven't looked into it, I literally just remembered, right now, at 4 am, that this was a thing and wanted to listen to the "original" song again.

This motif was ripped off by Tappi Iwase, most definitely a Japanese composer, for MGS1, and subsequently arranged in MGS2. Your correction would be better if you weren't wrong.
The Virtuous Mission took place in 1964. Sviridov must've been nearby and overheard some dramatic moment. I'm sure it was just an accident when he worked the motif into Winter Road ;)
Discovered this track sometime ago after listening the epic Time, Forward! I have to say it sounds REALLY familiar to another melody I knew. Today I got it! Metal Gear Solid main theme was HEAVILY inspired by this track and I took the liberty to substitute the Japanese one by Goergy Sviridovs neo romantic original motif and it sounds absolute EPIC!
It's obvious that it's too similar, but like someone already said, as a composer you go through thousands of pieces, and some remain subconscient, to the point that you start making a tune and when the first three notes match, your mind does the rest without you objectively remembering the piece.I have no doubts that they didn't know before it was actually unvelied (in a non-fashion way to be honest). @MariusChamberlin The composer for MGS2 likely experienced cryptomnesia when he made that theme. Sviridov's "Winter Road" was made in in the 1970's, meaning it predates Metal Gear for the MSX (and pretty much all video games entirely). MGS games stopped using the melody because it is still under copyright law, and had been 'used' without permission.
I have studied music for 30 years, and this song's melody is is distinctly complex. This song makes me feel like we went backwards, in some aspects, with regard to song composition.

This motif was ripped off by Tappi Iwase, most definitely a Japanese composer, for MGS1, and subsequently arranged in MGS2. Your correction would be better if you weren't wrong.
The Virtuous Mission took place in 1964. Sviridov must've been nearby and overheard some dramatic moment. I'm sure it was just an accident when he worked the motif into Winter Road ;)

I can not only hear parts of the MGS song but some parts that sound like the trailer music to WoW vanilla. Great song, love it!
Discovered this track sometime ago after listening the epic Time, Forward! I have to say it sounds REALLY familiar to another melody I knew. Today I got it! Metal Gear Solid main theme was HEAVILY inspired by this track and I took the liberty to substitute the Japanese one by Goergy Sviridovs neo romantic original motif and it sounds absolute EPIC!

It's obvious that it's too similar, but like someone already said, as a composer you go through thousands of pieces, and some remain subconscient, to the point that you start making a tune and when the first three notes match, your mind does the rest without you objectively remembering the piece.I have no doubts that they didn't know before it was actually unvelied (in a non-fashion way to be honest). @MariusChamberlin The composer for MGS2 likely experienced cryptomnesia when he made that theme. Sviridov's "Winter Road" was made in in the 1970's, meaning it predates Metal Gear for the MSX (and pretty much all video games entirely). MGS games stopped using the melody because it is still under copyright law, and had been 'used' without permission.

I have studied music for 30 years, and this song's melody is is distinctly complex. This song makes me feel like we went backwards, in some aspects, with regard to song composition.
