Ragnar chose Ivar because Ivar had the best chance of being freed from capture due to his handicap.
I don't know if Ragnar chose a favorite son, but if he did, I doubt he would choose the son with whom he barely spent any time over the son who was with him from the very beginning and witnessed his rise from farmer to Earl to King.

This is the kind of self-inserted cope that Bjorn fans keep using. You make it sound like Ragnar chose Ivar out of desperation when he chose Ivar out of intention.
The truth is that Ragnar understood his sons too well, he understood that his sons have grown into men and pursuing their own dreams. But not Ivar.
Ragnar understood that Ivar was driven to prove how he was greater than his brothers, and Ragnar understood the anger that resides within Ivar.
Remember that Ragnar himself was betrayed by Rollo, so he understood that even brothers can betray one another for ambition. When he told Ivar to "be ruthless", he told Ivar to punish anybody that underestimated him; and that included his own brothers. Ivar the Boneless was only unleashed because Ragnar set him loose.
