Ragnar‘s sons ultimately represent one aspect of Ragnar: Bjorn represents the worthy and beloved leadership of Ragnar, Ivar the madness and brutality, Ubbe the quest for peace and the life back in a farm and Hvitserk the struggle of mental health (especially after Aethelstan‘s death), belief, and conversion. So Ragnar never died, he lived in different pieces as his sons. Bjorn and Ivar died in the end because Ragnar also gave up his leadership and the constant fighting and madness. Till the end he had struggles with gods, beliefs and mental health and till the end he wished he never left the farm, that’s why Ubbe and Hvitserk survived the story.
I think Sigurd represented Ragnar's naiveness, which is something he lost in the 1st season. So that's why he was the first one to die. Either that, or the actor sucked so they wanted to get rid of him lol

Since Gyda died very early this characteristic of Ragnar died with her. That could be a good explanation.

They are very similar and probably excelled because of that. Both had hard childhoods. Whilst Ubbe, Hvitserk, and Sigurd grew up as healthy princes, Bjorn grew up as a poor farmer and Ivar as a cripple. Both experienced hardships early on. Although I like the other brothers too, they didn't face struggles in their early life.
If they were one team they would be unstopabble but their ego couldn't accept they will share the leadership or someone of them will lead their united armies.

Years later Lagertha killed Asloug in coldblood and make her self queen - the only purpose was jealosly(becasue she coulnd born Ragnar's sons) and ambition. So in that case the legit king should be Ubbe. Ragnar told Ivar that he is the most important person for the future of their own people and choosed him above all of his sons. By the way it's kind of funny to say that Ivar betyed his own people by atacking Kattegat with the rus(old pegans) and to say nothing abouth Bjorn fighting alonside the saxons(the christians who killed his own father) againts the army of his own people.

I think Bjorn's decission was the best he could take and also the righter. Ragnar shited on Lagerta's face, a real, loyal, good mother and wife, perfect, and even a boy like Bjorn knew that.

I feel for Ivar. The truth is, he still had potential. Despite being outcast, he still became a feared Viking on his own. Just imagine what he could’ve been if he has Ragnar and his brothers supporting him from the very start. If Ragnar was able to see his potential and foster it.. With all the things he did while being crippled, imagine what he’d be like if from the very start he felt equal to great Vikings and was supported by his whole family, not just the very few people who loved him regardless.
They literally did exactly that. They supported him. They accepted him. They protected him. Especially Ubbe and Bjorn; and both he betrayed. He also betrayed Hvitserk. Ivar literally was a spoiled brat which got too empowered for his own good. Especially Ragnars desperation for vengance in the end, which lead him to take Ivar with him, pushed Ivars ego too far. In the end, Bjorn died as a Hero, Ubbe found his peace, Hvitserk searched for enlightenment and Ivar died cryin'.

I bet Ragnar feels immense pride of Ivar but at the same time immense guilt. He knew only Ivar could fulfill his wish of revenge and the best hope for Viking culture but he also knew that he would have to set him on a path that would end to his eventual downfall. Imagine how things would have been so different. If Ivar grew up without the influence of Floki, Ragnar, Auslaug and he found his own person. I honestly believed Ivar would’ve ushered a “golden era” for Vikings had he been born normal. Just like a comment once said, the gods nerfed Ivar by making him a cripple, in Viking society no less.

Truly some of the best character arcs in all of storytelling. The sons of Ragnar fought for the legacy of their father, a very conflicted man who went as far as attempting suicide near the end of his life. A man who didn't care about approval and wanted nothing but to see his people thrive without the need to raid. A man who claimed that the gods aren't real and man is the master of his destiny.

It's hilarious to see that the one who separated Ragnar's children was Lagertha when she killed Aslaug, this caused the whole war, Ivar wanting to avenge his mother, and Bjorn knowing he was wrong could do nothing but defend his mother, a cycle of pure revenge and maternal protection lol

Every ounce of anger and bitterness he felt was earned and justified due to the constant bullying of not only his citizens and neighbors, but his own flesh and blood only to be told to suck it up. He may have been ruthless and cruel, but he grew and developed beyond who he was at the start of the show while Bjorn seemed to remain stagnant over the years. In my opinion, Ragnar was right to trust Ivar with his legacy as he was the only brother to leave a mark on the world and was the only brother aside from Bjorn to be remembered(Sigurd doesn’t count).
Even tough bjorn wasn't as brillant as ivar you cannot say he was dumb. He the one who has leave the more adventures with Ragnar so he learned a lot from him including war strategy. The reason why he was inferior to Ivar is that he never listened to Ragnar's advice to lead with his head and not with his heart.
Also Bjorn once outsmarted Ivar when Ivar run for Rollo’s help he was defeated also Bjorn was leader and people were following him like when he took Kattegat from Ivar people are saying he is dumb but he beated Ivar 3 times of course Ivar is smarter but Bjorn is not dumb

In my opinion, Ragnar was right to trust Ivar with his legacy as he was the only brother to leave a mark on the world and was the only brother aside from Bjorn to be remembered(Sigurd doesn’t count).
