2:27 the USS Midway was the first carrier built "after" WWII. It was in use up until the 1990's Gulf War. Anyhow, this is such a cool ship and so much to see!
Midway was decommissioned in Apr 1992. There is footage on YT of her last voyage. You're also incorrect about when Midway was built. She was laid down in 1942, launched in March of 1945 but wasn't commissioned until September of that same year. You are right in saying it is a very cool ship. The amount of work carried out on it to bring it up to 'modern' carrier spec of the 70s through to the 90s was, if I remember correctly, more extensive than nearly every carrier in service at that time. The only ship to have the same refit was her sister ship the USS Coral Sea CV43.
Thanks for the video. I worked on A6 Intruder aircraft on the USS Carl Vinson Aircraft Carrier 30 years ago, Seeing a carrier video like this brought back memories. Have a safe crossing.
I really enjoyed the tour. As a history buff I love this stuff. Bill was a great tour guide and appreciate him showing us around and sharing his knowledge. Another great video, keep up the good work.
Very nice vid. My son was in the Navy stationed in Jacksonville. We got to tour the J.F. Kennedy before it was retired. It was HUGE. Of course we didn't have such an informative guide and there were no planes aboard. This brought back memories. Thank you so much. Merry Christmas.
I was stationed aboard Midway CV-41 for 3 years ,her sister ship USS Coral Sea CV-43 for 6.Two of the 3 Midway class carriers the other being the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt Cv-41...
Spent a whole day on board the Midway. Enjoyed siting in a ready room as it was air conditioned and San Diego gets warm. We stopped and chatted with may of the docents as they were mainly retired navy and had served on board her and were proud of their ship and their service on her.
Great video..I did 2 Mediterranean and Indian ocean deployments on the USS America in the mid 80's and this really brought back some memories. Actually brought a tear to my eye..Good job..Ill be in San Diego in a few weeks perhaps ill go check this out.
Very cool vid. I sailed aboard Midway 79-81. Midway was the 1st Carrier task force on station during the Iranian hostage Crisis. I was on board when the ship hit a tanker off Palawan, P.I. 2 sailors were killed. 3 injured. We did 3 I.O. Cruises in less than 2 years. More nautical miles than Doodles. For sure.
Great tour Vid and thanks to him for his service I am Navy Vet as well served 7 yrs and was stationed on USS HARRY S TRUMAN CVN-75 nuclear carrier homeport Norfolk VA
Awesome tour! I was com/nav/radar on EA-6B's in the 1980's. Never did a carrier deployment, but do remember completing flight deck firefighting training!
I visited aboard USS Midway when she was homeported in Yokosuka, Japan... Enjoyed following you around during your tour... I had been stationed aboard the USS Coral Sea (CV-43) from 01/71 thru 12/74... She is numerically the third of the Midway class, although, she was destined to be the second in the class... The reason for the change from 42 to 43 is the death of Franklin D. Roosevelt... The FDR was originally scheduled to be CVA-43... So, the original Coral Sea (CVA-42) became the FDR (CVA-42)... The Coral Sea was adopted by the City of San Francisco and designated “San Francisco’s Own.” Every time we got underway from NAS Alameda, and we returned, we displayed a huge banner on the “04 Level” Signal Bridge, on the SF side of the Island Structure...
man you lucked out with that fellow for a tour guide; amazing man; I would definitely watch a movie on him; Merry Christmas to you and Laura; another great video; thumbs up buddy
Some of my friends served on the Midway just before it decommissioned and then they were transferred to the Ranger (CV 61), where I was first stationed. Cool stuff. My office is in downtown San Diego and I walk to it often. Since I've become a pilot, I fly over it a lot and I'm always taken by how small of a target it is to land on. Crazy.
Excellent video! I worked with Navy pilots that told me the most terrifying thing was nighttime launches. They said, once launched off the deck you have about 1.5 seconds to decide if the plane is flying ok or you need to eject.
Followed in her wake back in the late 70's while she was based in Yokosuka, Japan. On one of the plane guard duties, we had 1 go down and picked up pieces.
Say thanks again to William, it made this video a fantastic tour, lots of info. If I ever go there, I think I can spend a whole week looking at all the stuff!!!. :D cheers guys and Merry Christmas.
I had to laugh. There is always that one guy who comments “when are we going to see you sail.” If all we saw was you sailing, we would miss out on great videos like this one. Keep up the great work!
Thought I'd heard the name LaBarge before, then realized I've read 'Hornet's Nest' his earlier book! Hope you realize how lucky you are for the personal tour like that, and absolutely fascinating! Merry Christmas to you both, and a Happy Holidays to all! Stay safe people!
Great tour of the Midway. I live in San Diego, have my boat on the Bay (in Marina Cortez - sorry I missed you) and I am a Midway Museum member but I learned a lot of new stuff about the carrier from your video. Thanks, good job.
Great video, great tour, I have been on the Lexington (Essex class) several times in Corpus Christi, Been on the BB-35 Texas many times, and on the North Carolina.
19:56 You go down the stairs facing them for safety reasons, in the British navy you get loss of leave punishment at the least for going down facing away, (or the cat o' nine tails). They are not called stairs in the navy.
Isn't the Midway the ship that the South Vietnamese Major landed on with the Cessna Bird Dog with his wife and 5 children on board when Saigon fell?? I enjoy your videos and following where you guys are. Keep the great videos coming.
You are correct. Vietnamese Air Force Major Buang-Ly and his family. www.navyhistory.org/2014/04/the-opportunity-to-make-history-vietnam-war-heros-flight-to-freedom-remembered/
Bob thanks for sharing this video. It was a great video. I like laura's little sli on the stairs im sure her heart rate went up for a couple of minutes. LOL glad she wasn't hurt. I think you made a great joice with her Love her personality she's great!! Merry Christmas and God Bless. Safe sailing and Happy New Year !!!
Great tour! I enjoyed seeing the Midway a couple of years ago but Bill gave more depth to the experience. I'm surprised you and Laura didn't reenact "The Kiss" next to the Midway! ;) Merry Christmas!
19:47 Almost tripped cuz you guys are using the stairs facing the wrong way. Up or down always face TOWARD the stairs with both hands on the railings. If I've saved even one life today it was worth it! :-) Merry Christmas.
Nothing better than a proud vet sharing his knowledge and experience!
Some of the best times of my life, we're while serving aboard the Midway.... It was magic
Thank you for your service Bob!
Hey, Shipmate. Hope life is treating you kind.

I served in VF-151 on the Midway from 1983 through 1986. That brought back a lot of memories.
Thanks for the tour. I was stationed onboard for two years from 1979 to 1981. I was a black shoe in the Print Shop.

Thanks for bringing us the tour of the Midway, love learning the history and technical things about our military!
Awesome video! I did 30 years in the Air Force and have a lot of respect for the sailors that lived on ships. I couldn't do it.
I was stationed aboard Midway CV-41 for 3 years ,her sister ship USS Coral Sea CV-43 for 6.Two of the 3 Midway class carriers the other being the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt Cv-41...
