  • We get a guided tour of Aircraft Carrier USS Midway from retired naval Aviator William LaBarge. We can't thank him enough for doing this for us. He has written several books and one of them is even being made into a movie.
    Here is the link to his book "Lightning Strikes Twice":

    Very cool vid. I sailed aboard Midway 79-81. Midway was the 1st Carrier task force on station during the Iranian hostage Crisis. I was on board when the ship hit a tanker off Palawan, P.I. 2 sailors were killed. 3 injured. We did 3 I.O. Cruises in less than 2 years. More nautical miles than Doodles. For sure.

    Spent a whole day on board the Midway. Enjoyed siting in a ready room as it was air conditioned and San Diego gets warm. We stopped and chatted with may of the docents as they were mainly retired navy and had served on board her and were proud of their ship and their service on her.

    2:27 the USS Midway was the first carrier built "after" WWII. It was in use up until the 1990's Gulf War. Anyhow, this is such a cool ship and so much to see!

    • @macman6107
      @macman6107 2 года назад

      Midway was decommissioned in Apr 1992. There is footage on YT of her last voyage. You're also incorrect about when Midway was built. She was laid down in 1942, launched in March of 1945 but wasn't commissioned until September of that same year. You are right in saying it is a very cool ship. The amount of work carried out on it to bring it up to 'modern' carrier spec of the 70s through to the 90s was, if I remember correctly, more extensive than nearly every carrier in service at that time. The only ship to have the same refit was her sister ship the USS Coral Sea CV43.

  • @CPTCleoTorris
    @CPTCleoTorris 6 лет назад

    My brother served on that ship until it was decommissioned. He said it was the best carrier in the fleet as far as dedication, pride in service and quality of crew. He served on the Independence, and the USS America as well.

    I visited aboard USS Midway when she was homeported in Yokosuka, Japan... Enjoyed following you around during your tour... I had been stationed aboard the USS Coral Sea (CV-43) from 01/71 thru 12/74... She is numerically the third of the Midway class, although, she was destined to be the second in the class... The reason for the change from 42 to 43 is the death of Franklin D. Roosevelt... The FDR was originally scheduled to be CVA-43... So, the original Coral Sea (CVA-42) became the FDR (CVA-42)... The Coral Sea was adopted by the City of San Francisco and designated “San Francisco’s Own.” Every time we got underway from NAS Alameda, and we returned, we displayed a huge banner on the “04 Level” Signal Bridge, on the SF side of the Island Structure...

    Some of my friends served on the Midway just before it decommissioned and then they were transferred to the Ranger (CV 61), where I was first stationed. Cool stuff. My office is in downtown San Diego and I walk to it often. Since I've become a pilot, I fly over it a lot and I'm always taken by how small of a target it is to land on. Crazy.

    Actually he forgot many things. He forgot the Essex Class and Forestal class Carriers. plus, as an Ordie, you DON'T pull out that ammo drum to reload the Cannon on the M61A1 Vulcan Cannon, it is Reloaded via a Linkless Ammunition Loading System (L.A.L.S.) which we Mate to the Cannon and feed rounds into the drum via the conveyors at 300 rounds at a time, one "Belt" is 400 Rounds usually separated by a 50 Round "Break" , well, maybe TMI. Sry just had to get the real scoop out. F.W.F.S.

    No,it's not powered by diesel engines. It's boilers however,are powered by marine diesel fuel. They use that to boil water to make steam that powers the steam turbines. Only diesel engines are the back-up generators. I know this because i was aboard her sister ship Coral Sea and worked down in 2 engine.

    19:56 You go down the stairs facing them for safety reasons, in the British navy you get loss of leave punishment at the least for going down facing away, (or the cat o' nine tails). They are not called stairs in the navy.

    Good tour. Would have been and an excellent tour if Mr. La Barge had shown where the enlisted sailors lived/bunked, the senior enlisted living areas, the mess areas for enlisted, the main galley, and where/how women sailors lived/bunked. There are other areas "below deck" that would have been interesting to see.
    I was surprised to learn that the Midway was kept in service so long, decommissioned in April 1992. It was, also, interesting to learn (Wikipedia) that Midway had three (3) flight deck designs: the original in 1945 and two following modifications in 1957 and 1970.
    Could have been a better tour.
