An age grouper, I crossed the finish line of this race already feeling a high from the run. I walked up to my coach and immediately asked, "who won?!". When she said "Lionel", I was filled with so much joy that I cried. No one has been more of an inspiration to me, and nobody makes me happier to see succeed.
I have been checking youtube every 2h since Sunday looking for this video, let's goooo🔥🦁

Hate that I can only hit the "like" button once. Aweseom recap and format. Talbot if you haven't watched the coverage go and take a look. When Lionel comes out of the water and the announcers hear the deficit is only 90 seconds back the male announcer flat out calls it for Lionel. Unapologeticially announces the race is his.

Seeing Lionel win made me so happy. Been following the journey for a long time. Pretty epic
100% and I was having doubts, having him losing focus last 2 years, but also since 2017, when he came 2nd and we all thought 2018 could be his year.
So happy for him and his crew!!
For a pro athlete, and one who has been at the top or up near the top consistently over many years, to hear the vulnerability of “mental breakdowns” and doubt and insecurity is really quite rare and LS should be applauded for speaking out about himself like that. Undoubtedly there are many others out there in all sorts of sports, or life in general, who need to hear that people that we hold so high are human too, and have moments that they need to dig deep within to overcome. Cheers LS!!! It was great to watch you win Oceanside!! Been a big fan for years even though I do not do Tri at all. Here at the fire station in Canada we always watch your videos and have been cheering you on through the years!! Cheers to Erin and your baby, Aqua Bear and to Talbot for great vids!!!!

These two have had more influence on the sport and the way we see athletes and the races than anybody in the past decade. So happy Lionel had a great race and there is more to come. Will never forget to ride along Queen K in 2017 WC Kona, when this a young guy on a scooter with a big camera (Talbot 🙂) joined our ride in the rain to do some shots.
100% true! a champion without charisma is "just" a good triathlete. same with Lucy Charles, did more with second places than Daniela with all her championships...in my humble opinion....

You are aware the whole "people like Lionel for his transparency" thing is really just a backhanded compliment, started by the GTN channel, that his critics/doubters give him. They say that as a way of discrediting him as an athlete and mocking him for his personality by making it out as if people don't actually follow him for his athletic capabilities and also to depict him as being like a dramatic child. It's not an actual compliment or anything his fans would say.
It’s so interesting listening to this and hearing your perspective. From our view, you have never stopped training and you’ve been the most dedicated athlete in sport for these past 14 years. Really happy for you, your family, and your team for this win!
Hearing you talk about fear of failure really resonated with me. You inspired me to push myself in a marathon I ran today… to get out of my comfort zone and see what I could do. Also to be okay with however it played out. I had been planning to ‘run easy’ to start and ‘see how I felt’. F that… I went out at an ambitious but manageable pace from the beginning. I came at this race with a different mindset than I normally do… I PR’d the course by 10 minutes and made the podium in my age group. Thank you!!

I was almost in tears by the end of this interview. Following your journey and the way you tell it is so moving. You are so open and genuine. The most undoubtedly is the swim mark. Being less than a minute from the top 3-8 is profound. Ive mentioned the need for "open water swim sessions" still think that ...This oceanside swim tho showed a new element of progression!!! 🏊♂️💪
About fricking time for a race recap! What a race. Lionel obviously loves the sport beyond words because no matter what setbacks he's encountered, he just keeps at it and finds a way. Wouldn't it be great if this was his year to have the race of his life in Kona?

Great to see LS get up with a win, well done bud! Although I do giggle a bit, pro's having a sook about how they have to work hard and all the stress. Take the weekend warriors, work a 9 to 5 then fit all three sports in around everything else and still come in sub 10hrs.
Lionel’s view on what’s ‘tough’ is one of the many reasons he’s such an inspiration!!… so grounded, focussed, determined and despite all that, knows what’s truly important in life!…
