    Crazy how fast you were with minimal training. I finished my first marathon in 4:30 and took my training very serious for almost 6 months.

      Same here, it was 12 weeks for me for my first marathon and it was a sub3 in the first half because what is a pacing strategy right? and then I bonked and THEN while fighting to keep running at really slow speed, I somehow added an extra mile to my race. I ran 27.8 miles in 4:18.
      I was torn between feeling proud because I finished and pissed because I f*ked up lol

      Yeah he ran a 1:35 half in the middle of a marathon. Basically he could run a 3:10 marathon with minimal training. It's not really an average to advanced progression like the title implies, it's an advanced to more advanced progression.

      4:30 is decent but it depends on gender an age. for a guy around 20-40's that's a bit slow but for a lady its definately above average for about 6 months worth of training. it also depends how good your "serious training" was
      This guys is definitely quite a bit above average in genetics to begin with because he was able to break 3 hours. Most runners wont hit that time even with 5+ years of consistent training. Most men max out at about 3:05-3:10

    Absolutely what I needed to see today. Thanks Floberg! I keep trying to remind myself that these training blocks build on each other and the fitness builds too. After a massive PR I've had a string of "bad races" but we'll both be in Chicago 2023 with big goals. Let's get it!

    Nice! I went from 3:57 in 2012 to 2:34 in 2018. Never had a coach though. But every small increment under 2:50 gets tougher and tougher. Good luck with your goals!

      @@j.c8183 that would be a really long answer. 😃 Basically a lot of sacrifice, dedicatipn and discipline, and even more trial and error. If you want to go fast, you have the build the base first and then fine tune everything.
      Good luck on your marathon, trust your training, all the work you put in and most important have fun, the first one is all about having a good time. Or trying to.

      @@catedoge3206there’s a world of difference between 230 and anywhere near 2 hours in marathons. It’s like an 8 handicap golfer turning up at the Masters.

    I am 51, just did my first marathon, London this year. I thought I'd get 4.40 but the lack of training and thinking I could just eat a packet of chocolate biscuits the night before and lack of seriousness I ran 5.30. I now am hooked and want to do the 6 star majors. I am giving myself 10 years to complete it and will leave Boston to last meaning I need to get down to about 3.50 by then. I will do it but it's time to get serious and train properly. Looking forward to the journey.

    Still fairly new to running after an injury I came back last year wanting to get a sub 20 5k. In April 22 I was at 23 mins and change. Bought some books and started studying. Got to my goal running 19:35 in September. Then did a half marathon training block but aggravated my hamstring three weeks before the race and couldn’t recover.
    So then in January this year I decided to sign up to my first marathon. Edinburgh.
    Followed Pfitz’s advanced marathoning plan (seems logical for a first attempt!) and experimented with fueling etc.
    Race was last Sunday and I ran 3:06:32! Couldn’t believe it! I’ll watch more of your vids to see what I can take to try and break 3 hours.
    I love hearing people’s journeys and where they were to where they are. It gives me belief I can achieve things too!

    Moral of the story is get a coach early. I can't tell you how nice it is to have an incredibly experienced coach just plug workouts into training peaks for me. I love nerding out on training plans but this gives you an absolutely solid foundation to start from.

    I appreciate your feedback on your attempt to not stop until you hit your goal. For the longest I’ve had an issue with nutrition as well for the marathon. I still haven’t figured it out but seeing your video gave me hope that I can. I went from a 3:57 my first marathon to 2:59. Sucks I hit that time in July 2019 at SF Marathon and Boston didn’t happen. Went into a deep depression hole. Crawling out now and looking to get back out there. I’m starting from scratch but you’ve inspired me; truly gave me hope. I want to thank you. 2024 will be building it back up and goal to run Chicago next year 2025. I also love Chicago marathon ran it 3x. I am from NY so ran NY and it is a tough course. Living in the Bay Area now but 2025 looking to crush some goals. Would be great to chat with you if possible. Thanks again. My name is Adrian

    Dude, this video gives me goosebumps.
    I started running in 2014 (I mean I literally started jogging, just played some tennis) and got into it a bit more seriously in 2015 (jogging regularly 30 min 4/5 days a week). Injuries and my work meant that I didn't progress much until I ran my first marathon in 2019 (3:41:22).
    Then in 2020 I started training indoor cycling at home (for obvious reasons), but in 2021 I made what I consider to be good progress in running.
    In 2022 I went back to running a marathon (3:24:59, huge PR for me) and I realized that by adjusting some things in 2 years, maybe I could achieve a sub 3.
    I am 30 days away from my next marathon (I hope to be between 3:10:00 and 3:15:00) and then in September I will go for a sub 3:10:00.
    Like you (although with a different level of training) I realized that after several years I think I am beginning to understand how to prepare for and run a marathon.
    I repeat once again, this video gave me goosebumps (and great motivation for the next 15 days of high load). Thank you. Now I'm your fan from Argentina.

      Todo parece indicar que mis pronósticos fueron correctos y voy a estar cerca de 3:12:30, pero tuve algunos problemas con las zapatillas en los dos últimos fondos largos así que voy con un poco de miedo (algo que igual considero positivo en la maratón)

    Great video! Congrats on your achievements to date.
    I ran my first marathon 2 days ago and ran a 3:44:01, which I’m very happy with, considering my current work commitments.
    My goal is to beat my dad’s PB of 3:08 at some point and I think this is the inspiration I needed to sign up for another marathon next year!

      I turned 50 last year and I set myself the goal to run a sub-90 for the half marathon. I achieved that in April this year. Next on the list is a 3:15:00 marathon. Yes, I'd like to go sub-3 but I think that might be a bit too ambitious. But hey, I might surprise myself. I'll get a better idea when I'm deep into marathon training.

      You and I are on the same path. 45 here and just ran Berlin in 3h26 and it wasn't my best day. Hope to run a 3h10-15 next April and go sub-3 at Chicago 24.

    Also cracked 3 hours (Finally) in Chicago 2022. Was my 4th marathon and a 14 minute PR. That time I was finally able to crack down on nutrition and hydration (GU/Spring Energy/Gatorade). Going to be in Berlin in a few months so will be excited for that race. Good luck in Chicago! So long as there is good weather (like in 2022) you will do well!

    I love that training for a literal marathon is very much a metaphorical and emotional/spiritual marathon in itself, and that it can last for years and years as things slowly fall into place. Long distance running is something we are evolved to do! I think I ran for probably 6-7 years before I really even started to find true joy in it, but over the last 3 years I have come to love it more than anything and I'm climbing up the walls on any day I don't get at least an easy run in. Pursuing a goal like this over so many years really does reap so many rewards and benefits - massive kudos

    Thank you for this brotha! Just ran my 2nd marathon in Chicago. Absolutely devastating and disappointed with the time. Goal is 3:30 and did a half earlier this year at 1:31… I ve cramped up both years where I had to go to a med tent bc I couldn’t move. I just can’t get this nutrition things right. Thought I did the right things this past year. But inspiring!! I’m glad it takes some ppl multiple years bc all you ever see is instant success on instagram from other running influencers. Much love brotha!!
    PS: I’m currently in Chicago so would love to catch a run sometime!

    This was super inspiring. Straight off the couch, it's been 10yrs since I've actively worked out. My goal is to run a half marathon by the end of this year 2024. Current volume is 20 mile weeks with 10 min/mile. I have zero clue how to structure my workout, but I'm super glad i found your channel.

    Congratulations! This is the first time i see a video of yours. I am 54 years old and have run 8 marathons so far I plan to keep running til I am 84 so still a long way to get there. I was never able to crack the 3 hours (PBT of 3:08) and I think this is probably out of my reach now. Enjoy the ride!

    I ran my first marathon in december 2022 last year and ran a 3:25 without a proper training plan or much training at all tbh (was def underprepared) but this year im going to try harder and give myself an actual plan. Im starting my base training now eventhough we’re still in May but I’m trying to go sub 2:50 this year and when looking at the pace required, it seems pretty do-able. Thabks for this video, it was rlly inspiring and fueled my motivation to train even more

    My wife started running in 2017 and did her first 5km effort in over 25 minutes. With me as her coach just 6 years later (sept 2023) she has now ran a pb for the marathon of 2:34:29.

    Stubbled across your site and loved it. Really great content - thanks for sharing. I'm on the journey too... 4:36:54 NYC 2015 to 3:19:37 in 2021... Had a few years of going backwards hovering just around sub 3:30 but focus this year is sub 3:15 in Berlin 2024. Nursing a hamstring niggle currently, so my 3rd Boston is looking a challenge in 6 weeks time, but this video just reminded me why I love this game!

    Amazing… I had a stomach cramp on my second attempt. Cramps on the first one. Had to walk/run the last portion on both. I felt like I never wanted to do it again and here I am trying to understand this better. Thank you for sharing your story. It’s very inspiring.

    Had to pause the video at 25 seconds to write a comment since it resonated so much! In 2015 I started running and my first ever run was a half marathon from the sofa, without any prior training. Needless to say, it was gruesome and brutal. But it got me hooked to running, since then I’ve ran 16 half marathons and 2 full marathons! Love the video already!

    It’s crazy that I find you on this channel 4/5 years later. My first time finding your channel was on your photography channel, where you did a funny skit about GH5 users and 5DIV users arguing about specs and color science.
    Fast forward 5 years and I just started getting into marathon training and found this channel!
    Thank you for sharing your failures and the injuries you incurred throughout your journey. It makes me feel better knowing that I’m not the only one experiencing frustrating obstacles along the way. Trying to hit a sub 4 on my first marathon for next month… with only 25-30 miles a week of training. I don’t know where all these people with kids find the Time to run 50+ miles a week

    at minute 8:57 of this video shows the Abegweit, this ferry boat originated in my province of Prince Edward Island, been on her many times back in the day. the name means cradle on the waves! i am training for a sub 3 hour this coming October.

    Thanks for sharing your story. I had a 3:11 @ Chicago last year. A 3:05:27 at the Woodlands in March. And I’m currently working through phantom niggles inside a taper for the Buffalo marathon on the 28th, which I apparently will run a 3:03 if I continue along the Floberg marathon trajectory. I’ll also be bringing the GoPro. PB city, coming up.

    Just found this channel and the story hits home. I’m headed into my 4th marathon (Chicago) this fall and I’m hoping to finally break the 3hr barrier. Nutrition has been a big factor in the past. It took me a while to realize that alcohol and junk food don’t mix well for me. Been doing things a lot differently this training block and I’m hoping to finally make something special happen. Thank you for the inspiration!

    You were correct about being a good runner in 2017. It was just the wrong year. Your times in 2017 & 2018 were still solid considering the carefree, lax training. Bravo sir, keep knocking out the goals.

    Heya, how good are your glutes? If you drink enough electrolytes during the run (except it is extremely hot) most people do not need salt pills.
    But, if your glutes are underdeveloped your hamstring might overcompensate and then you get cramps even if electrolyte intake is fine.
    If you are not already doing it, train on trails every now and then. That way you can reduce the strain on your muscles and joints while still getting the metabolic benefit of the training (the adaptation of your aerobic efficiency)

    My first marathon was Chicago 2022 and I did it in 5:48, I must admit I didn't take the training too seriously because as a former figure skater, I thought I had enough endurance and overlooked the nutrition during the race, the marathon is really humbling. Now I'm running more consistently and doing research so I hope to get a better time for my next marathon.

    Nice video Eric, thanks for sharing. Have a similar story as my daughter and I started running marathons. We [daughter and I] ran Grandma's 2022, loved the day we had and also achieved a PR's and BQ's. Not quite your, Kofuzi and Ben's speed, but for a 64yr. old, feel i did pretty well with a sub 3:30 for my 5th Marathon. Chasing the 6 star and maybe will run into you one day. Next up for me, Berlin in September.

    Currently trying to go sub-3. Last year my first marathon I ran 3:34. Trying to taper up to 60 miles a week and do a bunch of speed work with it. Also trying to do resistance training and supplemental training to avoid injury.

    I just finished my 3rd Cleveland Marathon Challenge Series (10km on Sat/Full on Sun) with two new PR's but missed my 3:59 goal by 14 min and hit the wall HARD. This video really helped me reflect on my race and makes me determined to come back next year even stronger!

    I'm also trying to sub 2:50 at Chicago this year. And I see you talk about cutting back on volume and do more or speed workout. Can you please share like what kinda speed workout I should be focusing? Should I do more repeat intervals of 800 or miles or 2 on 1 off speed workout run in the long run? Thanks in advance.

    I ran Carmel this year too, I chose it so my whole famiy could come watch me run my first marathon. I had the tenacious goal of a BQ on my first marathon out, and was able to achieve it. I owe most of that to living in las vegas and training at altitude along with having my family there along the course to support me the whole way!
    I will be running my second marathon Saturday Sept. 16th at the 27th Air Force Marathon!

    I too, will be in Chicago this fall trying to get my sub three. For me, just like it was for you, I think, nutrition and hydration during the race is the key. Still trying to find the right balance.

    Great video! I did first full 2021 at 41 years old 3:58, spring 2022 3:53, fall 2022 3:24 and injured a lot this year. But I realized I swear excessively and need salt as I bonked on marathon 2 and 3 bad. Shooting for a 3:30 this year and have fun, not gonna bonk

    As a full-time filmmaker and former professional athlete, I find this very inspiring. Speed skating was my sport (not the best for running) and now I have decided to do a marathon in October. Thought it would be cool to document my journey and will def use your channel for inspiration. Both in terms of the documenting part and the training part!

    Cool video! What a dream. It's still great to do sub 4 with no proper preparation and the setbacks on the way! I'd love to do sub 4 but I was really proud to run it feeling relatively good and having fun most of the time. Except the torrential rain.
