Like you alluded to, it’s always tempting to think that you left significant time on the table when you actually execute a negative split, and maybe that was the case with this race. But I think it’s worth emphasizing that planning a realistic negative split is NOT a conservative strategy, it is virtually always the BEST way to get the most out of yourself-by allowing your body to properly ease into the effort, by giving yourself time to discover what you really have to give on a particular day, by saving harder efforts for later in the race (when you won’t really be paying for the effort until after you’ve crossed the finish line). And perhaps counterintuitively, a well-executed, realistic negative split will feel easier (and often FAR easier) than the alternative while allowing you to run a faster time. Obviously Chicago is your race to run and I’m excited to see how you do, but (at the risk of sounding a little preachy) I hope you’ll avoid the temptation to be more “aggressive” by trying to pace it evenly. With a negative split you may wonder how much more you had to give, but with an even or positive split you will know for sure that you underperformed AND you will have made it harder on yourself. But regardless, great job and thank you for sharing your journey and dedication!
Loved your message at the end about applying the running mindset to our personal life and improving our relationships with the people who support us. I completely agree. Very positive message. Thank you for sharing that.
I’ve followed your other channel for a while and as I struggle on and off to get into running regularly, it seemed like a valid reason to check out what you’ve got going on over here. So, um, yeah… I’m here for it!
I just searched "1:12 half marathon" and found your channel for the first time. The race that got me back into running was Hidden Gem back when I lived in Chicago. I ran sub 1:18 for the first time last weekend and I'm now targeting 1:12, probably in Houston. Thanks for the video.
So well said about family, relationships, and how running is just a small part of the big picture. The discipline and commitment it takes to progress in training & racing has had a positive impact in many aspects of my life and I'm thankful that running does that. Another great video......thanks for sharing!
Getting ready for my half marathon on October 5th. Been training my ass off. I ran last years half at 1:49, I’m shooting for a 1:30 Im 2 weeks away. Wish I had more time, but I’m excited. Nice video man! Congrats on that time that’s awesome 👏
Eric I’ve got my first half in November. I am in height of my training block right now and it’s exhausting but SO rewarding. Thank you for being an inspiration to me and many others.
Congrats on your run, pretty impressive. But the daily struggle to be the best dad u can, go to work and still chase your dreams is the real deal here. As a father of 2 Little ones with a demanding job myself im still searching for the Solution to this puzzle. Thanks for being so Open about these parts as well. Good luck in Chicago
I used to never hit carb target because I could not eat anymore towards the end of the day, then I discovered maple syrup. You can put it on rice, put it in coffee, and pick up lots of carbs without stuffing yourself.
Love this, Eric. You’re awesome dude! Hope we can meet one day -though our finish times may be just a tad apart. At least for now! I’ve really benefited from BPN’s gels, G1M, the vegan protein is my jam. And a few others. Excited to try the caffeine gels! And thanks for the tip about orange juice carb loading. (Also, husband and father of 4 over here -unite!) cheers-
Perfect timing. Just ran a 10 mile race yesterday and legs are shot. Taking today as recovery going on the bike, need something to take my mind off and this video is perfect for this morning. Again congratulations 🎉on the huge half marathon PR, you are just getting better and better. Amazing things coming your way
Well done mate. High vitamin C or fructose in so many servings of juice can cause lower GI issues. Loading up on maltodextrin/ dextrose or even more G1M could be a safer option. You want sugar when loading up, not great for the teeth but you’re so insulin sensitive that your muscles will suck it up
Great job Floberg! It should also boost your confidence that: - You definitely could have run beneath 72 that day. - You were not wearing your Elite shoes - You were FAR from tapered. Go crush sub 2:30! lol
Wow im on track with all of your progress: break the 3hr barrier(2:57) and with another training block, sub 2:50(2:49), ok so apparently ill aim for a 2:42 in training and go for a 2:39 next race.
It’s pretty wild to hear other peoples heart rates in races. After a year of running I ran my first half marathon with an average heart rate of 178 and felt good. I ran a 10k with an average of 190. (That one was hard)
I have this weird preference when talking about half marathon times, that below 1-hour 10-minutes I'll say "68:53", but if it's above I just say "1:11:25". Maybe it's because if you say it as "sixty...something minutes", you emphasize on how fast it is. Anyway, I don't think this makes sense at all but I still do it haha

Wise!
You are right negative split is ideal and for pros even common on longer distance for 800 or 1500 sometimes very rare.
The difference can't be massiv.

Hoping I can sneak some more philosophy in here and there on this channel. Thanks for listening!
If you run below 1 hour, I'll allow 59 minutes😁

Boss level run Flo. Nice work brother
Thanks so much!!

The last 2 minutes of this video hit me hard and I’m extremely grateful for it! Thanks Floberg!

This weekend Jakob blew up, stopped, then jogged home for a 63min half. Insane to think
Insane indeed! 🤯
1:03, no? 😆
Pretty wild haha
Great message at the end regarding family. Love your channel and your values!
Thanks for following along and watching!
Awesome Job Eric!! So excited what you will do in Chicago!
Thank you!!
Ending was worth it!! Thank you for sharing - it resonated

I like how we have similar heart rates on a race day. I knew my gears aren't broken. Thank you.
Love the OJ shout! Juice is my go to for weekday workouts when I don’t feel like eating at 5am
So good!
As insightful and awesome quality content as always! 😊 Gotta love my man Clark, his insta content is so good and motivating 😁
Clark is the best of us.
Another great race breakdown video, nice one!! Excited for Chicago!!
Happy for you! Tribute to your effort in workouts, consistency & shout out to Jeff of course. Congratulations. Rooting for you in Chicago!! 🏃🏽♂️
Thanks so much!!
Wow, dude what a great way to look at things. Mahalo for sharing. It would be cool if you ran the honolulu marathon!
Thanks for watching! Maybe one day!
I used to never hit carb target because I could not eat anymore towards the end of the day, then I discovered maple syrup. You can put it on rice, put it in coffee, and pick up lots of carbs without stuffing yourself.
May need to add this to the rotation as well. Thanks for the rec!!

Congrats Flo great work!
Thank you!!
Definitely in the 1:12 camp as well. Hell of a race dude 😤
Thanks so much!!
This is awesome Eric, great work!
Thank you!
What a run man! Congrats! I ran a 15k PR this past weekend. Thanks for the motivation!
Heck yeah! Congrats!!
Getting an Eric Floberg email after a long day at uni is always a good feeling
Nice PR dude! Chicago is going to be 🔥!!!
My man.
i said it before, I’ll say it again. 2:30 CHICAGO
Great job Floberg! It should also boost your confidence that:
- You definitely could have run beneath 72 that day.

Go crush sub 2:30! lol
Appreciate you! I was wearing the Saucony Elites though haha
Congrats on the PR!
Thank you!

That boi fast ⚡️
You always remind that HR data is relative to the individual, but really remarkable that you’re in the 160s here. My zone 2 easy run is 145-154 haha.
It’s pretty wild to hear other peoples heart rates in races. After a year of running I ran my first half marathon with an average heart rate of 178 and felt good. I ran a 10k with an average of 190. (That one was hard)
Yup! All relative!
Nice progress from sub 180 full to 72 half
Thank you!
It seems as though, if someone runs under 1:20 then you go with total minutes, like 74. Whereas if you're over that mark, then you ran 1:22.
I have this weird preference when talking about half marathon times, that below 1-hour 10-minutes I'll say "68:53", but if it's above I just say "1:11:25". Hahaha yeah, I think I fall into this camp.
I say 1:12 when over 1:10 and anything lower 68,67 etc minutes hahaha
This seems to be the widest consensus hahaha
can i ask name of the font you using in your video ? hehe tks anw
Anything under 1:30, is strictly minutes for me! 72:24 it is.
I 2nd that 89 or 1:31 there’s nothing in between.
Two questions:
1.what was your longest long run before this half?
2. How hot and humid was it during the 8× 1mile?
Thx n great job .soon sub 1 10
1. 19 miles
2. I think it was around 75 and really humid.
@@flobergruns Thanks...i think hot and humid takes off like 15 secs a mile
I'm curious about your carb breakdown, it seems "simple carb" heavy vs. "complex carbs". Is that not important when carb loading?
Genuine question here. I'm carb loading this week for my marathon Saturday.
Applesauce is the OP carbs
i recently broke the 240 minute barrier in the Marathon
Way to go!!
Nice Breakdwon
😂 oops
72 bro. Keep it crisp
Are the Coros race predictors better than Garmin? Because my Garmin ones aren't right at all. 😂🤦♂️
Yes haha
Consider me shocked
FYI be careful with Apple Juice. Yiu may be more that Gassy if you catch my drift.
Never say 72
Above a 10k distance & seconds do not count either.
Nice job! How tall are you?
Thanks! 5'11"
Under an hour 10 minutes is where I draw the line specifically so you can start saying 69
There’s parents that say 1yr 4months, then there’s parents that say 72 weeks old 😂
hahahaahaha
What’s your favorite easy run non plated shoe?
I love the On Cloud Eclipse & Monster
@@flobergruns how about Nike vomero 17, going to buy one of these
72 minutes is better 😁
“Not all of us can do great things, but we can do small things with great love.”

In the 60s, speak in minutes, otherwise stick to hours:minutes. Nevertheless, below 1h15 is crazy good 😮💪
Under 100 its minutes otherwise hours:min
I like to measure my race times in fortnights
Well, okay, I ran this race in .00357 fortnights.
There is a lot of fiber in organic juice. Is almost same as eating fruits. Its not god for using as fuel in running. This is the reason u had gas.
Seems like it did the trick haha
whats a breakdwon
this
hh:mm:ss This is the way!
Man how I love these breakdown vids, I left work half hour early for it :D
Ah, thanks so much!!
beta male
nice
@@flobergruns its not nice to be one but sure beta male
