Damn! Gotta find a way. Me too. Im 65 and after 7 years of no running I am back! Well not quite yet, comeback in progress! I even want to get back on the track after this clip.
Human eye (not even the best coaches') can't tell which running technique/style is more economical than the other. So this doesn't really say anything 😅
FANTASTIC editing Talbot! Watched this running off bike on the treadmill. Loved the video angles, music, info on splits, your commentary on those last efforts - fantastic. More of these training vids please!
carbon takes a lot of strain off your lower leg muscles and ligaments which means you're more fresh the next day but also impedes growth and strength development in those ligaments. i thikn it's better longterm to keep carbon for races. i like using the NB1400v6 on the track because it's a super simple flat but they're discontinued. the hoka mach 5 you're using is probably too heavy for a track session but i recommend something like the takumi sen. it doesn't have a carbon plate and is lightweight enough for a fast track session. good middleground between carbon and a low-cushion flat
I’m glad to know you will be using carbons on race day. When I saw the title I thought: Lionel don’t do what everyone else is doing to win! Glad is just for training.
@@JeatBunkie Of course there is a benefit. You just run faster in training with the same effort as if you were running slower in non plated shoes. And it is easier to predict your race day goal time.
I try to use my carbon a few times a year for hard efforts and races, but otherwise use normal and trail shoes. I like the mental boost for races that carbons give me.
Yeah the mental, and the lack of pressure on knees is a game changer. I always keep 2 pair and break them in then use one for training once a week. Important to train in it regularly to get the full benefit. Hopefully they get cheaper!
I had gone to carbon shoes for a summer and loved having the faster splits in training but in the end I stopped and run only in the taper in my carbon racers… With this approach I’ve hit so many more PBs. I’m not as quick as you but now that you’re on to my secret no chance of catching you.. Also I’ve added in some zero drop shoes for one run a week and that is usually a trail run, I found that helps too.
Lionel D1OS Sanders!!! We are two brothers of 9 and 10 years old, we are from Spain, we are your number 1 fans!!! Someday we will win the Ironman of Hawaii, but first we want to see you being the king of the island.
He is absolutely right - you lose something. I also ran in them for years and yes they help, but they also make your hoof lazy or lazier. Lionel has especially lazy hoof, he has very little airtime in his step.
There is some thought that the carbon shoes reduce injuries, allowing for increased volume and training. Will be interesting to see if that has any impact on Lionel.
I asked him this in the video but I did not feel it needed to be added but we looked it up and that’s just opinion no scientific evidence behind that statement but you’re right time will tell
This is exactly it. I have said it over, over and over. Apparently not in any place where people see it. The best approach to training and race day times is to save the carbons for your last two weeks before a race. This will give your body time to adjust to the race day set up and pace. Glad to see you taking up this approach. As you said... put in the work now, enjoy the benefits later!
Damn it Lionel - i just got hit by a car last week on my run & I'm supposed to rest, but this video makes me want to run... keep up the hard work. This year is the year for you to win again
Carbon takes the work/impact away from your feet and ankles. If I do track WOs in carbons, I do a barefoot cool down and always easy runs in non-carbons
I like his point. You should train in hard conditions to be at your best on race day. I´ve been using carbon over the last year and I feel I am slower than before when I go back to non-carbons
Please don't overtrain again, get the recovery/rest both physically and mentally, when you can 2nd in Kona it seems you did the work and boom after you seemed to over do everything and it hurt you, plz don't jump into that lane again, your deserve the big one.
looks like you are slightly overstriding. a bit more of a forward lean and trying to land under your center of gravity might be a good thing to focus on
That run looks strong. Looks like your pretty much healed up from last couple years, sometimes the body just needs time to heal. Way to stick with it,you know your body and you know what you need. Do what feels right, your doing great and as always still Motivating us all!
Brilliant. And I am looking forward to see some top of the podium results coming from this change in training. Never understood why so many train in carbon shoes but I suppose I am just old school too.
Super nice and motivating video, as usual. Keep going ! Any news about the aero testing in the wind tunnel in Germany with the Canyon guys (as announced in a previous video) ?
I for one have never tried carbons due to cost. I can’t afford to race right now much less afford that shoe. In another case I’m running 7:45 tempo pace now so don’t really need them till I can consistently be in the 6’s and faster.
totally agree with this. I only plate up for races. I love the confidence of running decent session in Hoka Arahi's or similar non glamorous daily trainer.
He is literally doing what people like me on budget do to conserve their carbon plated shoes. It is expensive so I only use them for fast workout few weeks before race day and race day.
I kind of refused to go down the carbon route. 1 because of cost and 2 because I thought they were a gimmick. But just found a £50 pair of Scott rc carbon shoes. So for that price why not. Very good but only for racing and the odd training run. 95% I'll stick with good old fashioned shoes.
Running with less shoe tech + more speed might be the best chance Lionel has at balancing and fixing his stride mechanics. From those of us in the biomechanics, physiology world, let's all wish him luck
I dont think he will ever "fix" his running form. Its 13+ plus years of running in that form, to change that now im not sure it would be positive, this technique his ingrained in his muscles, joints, neurology. I dont think you can change that and give benefits to his performance honestly.
In fact I still do some of my runs in a pair of 83 Pegasus which were used in marathons back when they were released with great results. This approach helps strengthen my feet and ligaments so that when I go with my Nike Kipchoge AlphaFly's I feel like I can't be stopped.
i did. the same thing i went back to running my fast workouts in non carbon shoes after i really struggled to hit 3:45 min/k in Training sessions were i didn’t have any available.
Yeah, I like the super shoes, but I don't wear them for every interval workout. It's nice to do some workouts in regular trainers to notice the difference more on race day.
im using my novablast 3 for everything interval and Marathon Pace training. I had vaporflys, and i loved them. but they broke at the end of last year. i never really went back to plated shoes for my Street running. I am an ultra Trail runner primarily, and my shoe of choice in the Hoka Tecton X. probably the best shoe ive ever had. its like a slightly bouncier plated mach 5. I just now bought a a metaspeed sky paris for a few HMs coming up. but thats about it.
IMO and experience, going from carbon fiber-based shoes to Hokas is like going from the most responsive side to the least responsive side of the spectrum. Hokas have bounce, but my Cliftons were way less responsive from heel-to-toe. A mid-point standard construction brand like Brooks might be what you’re looking for (I use the Adrenalines)
I grew up playing hockey and I always wore ankle weights at most practices, I would wear a weight vest if we were just doing shooting drills and passing. Game days I felt like I could fly. More importantly my legs held up thru the whole game. Going carbon in hockey came fast and it is still improving, but always being super light on gear I feel takes away stamina.
For us mere mortals, this is the motivation we could not get from anyone else in the pro field, but Lionel. I’m gonna tell myself loud the same quote: Out train them, man. Find a way, man!!
Have you considered doing some of your training (very little at first) on barefoot running shoes or at least shoes with zero drop? These should strengthen your feet and calves. Better start by only walking in them at first. Best wishes for the best season of your life. We're looking forward to it.
I'm curious, do you ever run the track in reverse (clockwise) for any reps? great vids lately.....all the vids are great really.....thanks for creating the content!
I know you're asking LS and not me, but I thought I'd weigh in on this.. I run both directions, I'm left-handed and left foot Dominant. Clockwise is easier for me to achieve pace targets. But running both directions balances the force put through both sides equally so I try to ensure I stay balanced, help avoid injury. It also reminds me to push through my legs consistently on corners 💪💪
I train in daily shoes and do speedwork in a lighter show. Carbons are for race day and with the cost of them I need to save them anyway. I think their harsh on the feet too to run in all the time.
I find that if I do speed work in carbon plates, I injure myself. Now I only use them for races and long runs but in general I try to rotate through my shoes so I don’t grow any imbalances
Interesting idea, the dude never stops thinking that's for sure... It does seem odd though to use the very first speed session of the build with no carbon for "data" hard to attribute time or feel directly to lack of carbon since the speed ought to feel "different" being the first session in awhile, no?
I switched to carbon because at my age and with years of running ... the ball of my foot would experience sharp pains in regular crushed running shoes ... even the more expensive ones Since switching over exclusively to carbon-plated running shoes that has totally gone away. ... never do I experience that pain now ... years after making the switch Something about the carbon plate seems to protect my foot in a way that normal cushion shoes do not ... at least at higher volumes
Literally reducing his carbon footprint.

actually carbon shoes is a good way of storing carbon :P

Beautiful edit on this one Talbot….had me hooked from start to finish.

Just rewatched this after the Oceanside win. Amazing Lionel! No Limits. I like my HOKA Mach 5s too.
Sitting here eating my breakfast getting absolutely pumped for my workout later watching this. Awesome content!
I keep coming back to this video. The editing, the lessons, and the overall vibe is just a winner.

No more doubts - the real Lionel is born again! And with him - his self motivation at its best!
And with it, free motivation for all of us 😁
Impressive how he hits those numbers with almost no springiness on his feet and heel striking, imagining how colossal his aerobic base is
Human eye (not even the best coaches') can't tell which running technique/style is more economical than the other. So this doesn't really say anything 😅
a decent amount of top proffessionals heel strike
heel strike has zero impact on efficiency
looks like midfoot strike to me, it's very hard to heel strike when running fast

FInd a way! That hit me hard, so simple, but yet such a strong mentality which applies to everything in life.
I train in a heavy shoe and race in a lightweight shoe (both non carbon). It feels so good to run in a lightweight shoe come race day.
That’s the thing, people seem to have forgot that the race shoes give you a benefit when RACING. If you train in them too, no benefit.
Same here, good strategy
