@@gengarzilla1685 Different voice actress + Different American dubber = Different characterization. Once 4Kids was no longer being used to dub the anime in America (before they went bankrupt) in favor of Pokemon TV, Veronica Taylor stopped voicing Ash Ketchum and Rachel Lillis no longer voiced Misty & Jessie from Team Rocket. Also, Veronica and Rachel being Pokeshippers themselves didn't help matters any, because even after Misty was removed as Ash's female traveling companion and was seemingly trapped in her Gym Leader role (because the original writer for the anime personally hated Pokeshipping, yet some of the other showrunners - writers, animators & producers - all actively allowed Pokeshipping moments to continue in the dub nonetheless), Veronica and Rachel still did voice over commercial work as Ash & Misty to boost sales for the holiday album _Pikachu's Christmas Bash_ (which cutely yet awkwardly featured them in the intentional Pokeshipping song "Under the Mistletoe") as well as to promote the freshly made Ruby/Sapphire videogames (relying on the quasi-romantic team-up song "It Takes Two"). Added to this, there's also the fact that had Pokemon NOT taken off in popularity like it did, the original Japanese ending to the first Pokemon movie purposely featured an adult Misty with another female with purple hair looking after Ash's Pikachu & caring for a pink-haired cherub of a child named Juria who was rumored to be SatoshiXKasumi/AshXMisty (also referred to as AAML/TwerpShipping [likely said by Jesse of Team Rocket towards the aspiring Pokemon Master from Pallet Town & the Cerulean City Gym Leader]/Original BikeShipping, etc.) offspring, so even if the original writer for the anime deliberately loathed the ship, if Pokemon didn't become the cash cow it did, SatoshiXKasumi/AshXMisty would've been made certified canon to definitively end the anime.
Dustox and Jessie's episode was way more emotional for me then this. Although it can still make me tear up but that would literally make me cry out loud😂
That episode with Jessie's Dustox was the better version of "Bye Bye Butterfree." It was just handled so much more intelligently than this. Unlike Jessie's Dustox, who ended up leaving because she saw another Dustox, fell for him, and got released because Jessie wanted her to be happy, Ashey-boy takes the first 'Mon he ever caught, traded away and literally almost died to get back, and just forces him into the wild because Brock said. That one flowed, but this one (though not necessarily bad) was too forced to merit some of the emotion it yielded.
I just realized... if that was to be the female butterfree, butterfree was attracted to male butterfrees before seeing her... so is Ash's butterfree bi?

Definitely. Every Pokémon that appeared in Journeys so far which could Gigantamax has always used that instead of Dynamax. I think the Gigantamax Factor will not be a thing and they can all Gigantamax.
Bit late to this, but I'm curious if they were referencing the short lifespan of irl butterflies? I believe they only live one year, though I may be wrong. If so, they could mean that Butterfree wouldn't be able to mate if it missed this season, since it'd only live a year. Which makes me realize just how many young trainers start out with bug types that have short lifespans, and Rattatas (bred rats living up to 3 years), etc and how young trainers would often see their Pokemon die quickly....
Too bad Ash never bothered to teach Butterfree Confusion. That would have been helpful! If all the Butterfree fly over the ocean to lay their eggs, how do the Caterpie get to Viridian Forest? Wouldn't it have been neat if Butterfree brought Ash one of his eggs that would hatch into a super-Caterpie?
This episode is so irritating and the conclusion is unnecessary. I remember watching this for the first time and thinking only one thought from start to finish: WHY? Butterfree leaves at the end of the episode: WHY? Can't trainers just travel to where the butterfrees migrate to to pick them up after the brooding season? Why are there so many trainers trying to get rid of their butterfrees!? Also I can't help but feel that ALL buildings regardless of region should have heating and a/c. I mean it exists why not use it? It's not like its never too hot or too cold outside.
The context of this episode would make a lot more sense if it had been established that Butterfree only has a 1 year lifespan and only has one chance to mate before dying
@5:15 I mean, the game developers actually took the time to change the colour of Charizard's Gen2 shiny sprite (Purple with green wings) when transitioning to gen 3 (to the well known black with red wings) simply because they felt Charizard deserved better. So it's really a shame they couldn't take the anime into consideration just this once and edit butterfree to have a pink shiny while they were already tweaking Charizard's coloration.
I'll debate you alright! Him letting Lapras and Charizard go was wayyy sadder, because they actually had precious memories together! Also: Every time Ash let a Pokemon go, it would make me furious!! He wants to catch 'em all, even his last name says so... yet he keeps setting his best Pokemon free... yeah, yeah you might say he's good hearted... but face it: he's a loser and an idiot!
no joke, when i first watched this episode i legit cried to my mom about it because i thought it was so sad. that was when i still had the ability to cry over tv or movies, i no longer have this ability. that was the first and last time i cried over a show/movie
I always assumed that Butterfree not having another chance to mate was the show implying that he is based on one of those butterflies that die after mating season so there literally is no chance next year because he'd be dead. Also, Ashe probably won't see Butterfree again because he dead. Oh well, ashes to Ashe's Butterfree, circle of life, and all that fun stuff.

Pikachus goodbye is a real tear jerker I'm told lol
I _cried_ after seeing that episode. I just couldn’t help myself. And… I RARELY cry. No, really. If I cry, you know the situation is THAT sad.
@@JediMaster362
Pikachu goodbye: am I a joke to you?
Me: yes, yes you are.
The episode Jessie and James release Wheezing and Arbok is sad too
Because gender differences weren't introduced until gen 4 all of the butterfree in this episode are male
Ha! Gaaaaaaayyyyyy! Lol.
Nothing against the gays, but there’s no way it will lay eggs in this season or the next
Theory: The pink one just wanted to be fab and doused itself in pink glitter.
Also, it's not even shiny...
What you mean to say is, there's no way to tell the difference between male and female Butterfree yet.
Just because gender differences are a thing doesn't mean all these Pokémon are male. Where are you getting that logic from?
It’s also the MOST-RECYCLED EPISODE IN POKEMON HISTORY
You mean like the Dustox episode in Sinnoh?
There's even another one in the Black and White Anime when BW Anime is the trashiest anime arc ever.
ShadowtitanX Theres TWO in BW. Cottonee in Love and the Caterpie one
@@TKnHappyNess i hated that so fucking baddd. Jessie and Dustox had no reason to be split up Dustox worked so hard to prepare for the grand festival just to not get to participate in it. I feel like dustox grown to like competitions just as much as jessie did and its sad she never got to participate in a grand festival
Saddest episode of pokemon anime for me was: goodbye, bye pikachu.
Ash sends off his pikachu, with a lot of memories in a montage.
I thought that episode was cheesy as a kid. We knew Pikachu would never leave Ash, whereas Butterfree is gone to this day.
Their babies are gonna be caterpies I thought you were afraid of them 😂
Aww seeing Liam get emotional is so adorable!!
I have to wonder if ash had kept butterfree do you think it would be a gigantamax butterfree?
Probably
I hope he returns in Pokemon Journeys
Definitely. Every Pokémon that appeared in Journeys so far which could Gigantamax has always used that instead of Dynamax. I think the Gigantamax Factor will not be a thing and they can all Gigantamax.
This is coming from Brock, who falls for every girl
Bit late to this, but I'm curious if they were referencing the short lifespan of irl butterflies? I believe they only live one year, though I may be wrong. If so, they could mean that Butterfree wouldn't be able to mate if it missed this season, since it'd only live a year. Which makes me realize just how many young trainers start out with bug types that have short lifespans, and Rattatas (bred rats living up to 3 years), etc and how young trainers would often see their Pokemon die quickly....
WTF? Misty not wanting Ash to send out Pidgeotto to help, but she sends out Starmie later contradicting what she said earlier. 🙄
Bye Bye butterfree
Me: thats pretty sad but no enough for a tear
Arbok and Weezing getting released
Me: THE TEARS THERE COING
That episode still makes me cry
7:27 Misty just proved why you should never take romantic advice from a 10-year-old
Lol
And there’s no instructor to tell you how to fly the hot air balloon!
Me: you could ask Team Rocket.
Because Caterpie and Metapod also get babies.
What I wanna know is why is everyone sad about Butterfree leaving but no one cares if other Pokémon leaves
Looking back knowing that Ash does reunion with his Butterfly. Just took 25 years to happen.
well then, watch the journeys end credits, ash does actually see butterfree again
I've been waiting for this!!
Meowth when Ash wants to punch James: "What an idiot, only Pokemon fight in Pokemon battles"
Jessie is a pokemon confirmed, pass it on.
The context of this episode would make a lot more sense if it had been established that Butterfree only has a 1 year lifespan and only has one chance to mate before dying
Time for a reference) its g fuel everyday bro
@5:15
I mean, the game developers actually took the time to change the colour of Charizard's Gen2 shiny sprite (Purple with green wings) when transitioning to gen 3 (to the well known black with red wings) simply because they felt Charizard deserved better. So it's really a shame they couldn't take the anime into consideration just this once and edit butterfree to have a pink shiny while they were already tweaking Charizard's coloration.
This was the first episode I ever watched. I was 3 and i always found it really sad, 😭
10:00 I mean that’s the compassionate choice lol
Stoutland dying was sadder, and there was only about, how many, 3 episodes with Stoutland and 4 with Litten?
"The saddest episode in Pokémon history"
To me that would go to when we get the backstory on how Meowth learned to talk
Aaayyy more of the best series on yt....
Butterfrees may live only one year
Ngl, butterfree actually looks very cute in that scarf!
That would be a cool accessory for the games to do
I'll debate you alright!
Narrator: Ash might’ve grown a little himself!
Me: He’s still 10 years old.
no joke, when i first watched this episode i legit cried to my mom about it because i thought it was so sad. that was when i still had the ability to cry over tv or movies, i no longer have this ability. that was the first and last time i cried over a show/movie
Ash:it will never have babies
Me :who cares just keep it
"Go on. Go and fuck." I'm going to try find a better line from this episode.
Gold and Silver debug menu, huh? I'll certainly try it out.
that pink butterfree is not from kento reign it's from pink island
It was this episode that made me keep a butterfree in my main team in one of my earlier pokemon games playthroughs.
“You can come back next year”
Problem is, there is no ‘next year’ in Pokémon since Ash is still 10.
@@bluegaming1296 I don’t recall them ever saying that. According to Bulbapedia, he’s still 10 even now, in Pokemon Journeys
@@bluegaming1296 That doesn’t matter. The anime follows a different continuity than the games, so any rules stated in the games do not apply to the anime unless they are also stated in the anime. Plus, the fact that Ash is still 10 in Pokemon Journeys, which is *after* Sun and Moon, directly contradicts that, which is further evidence that the rule doesn’t apply in the anime.
it's 24 degrees where I live I feel you
1:15 the anime geography is different than the game geography lol Liam u silly goose
You take this satirical series far too seriously.
I was dreading this episode since it really made me sad all those years ago.
Play why are they trying to stop Team Rocket from capturing wild Butterfree isn't that completely legal and legitimate
7:20
If misty does like ash, ash better run.
I was wondering where you had gone, since there was no upload tuesday :D
