  • In this video I apply some much needed weathering to my rake of Hornby Seacow ballast wagons. I really enjoy doing small projects like this and hope to bring you more in the future as I now have a better workbench in the house for doing this sort of thing. For future vids I have a loco repaint in the works and of course will be continuing to progress with the layout scenery over the next month or so.
Thanks to Dave & Andy who visited the layout a few weeks ago. If you're interested in more behind the scenes at Everard Junction then check out the latest video over on Dave's channel.

Andy also filmed his own video and you can find that on the Warley channel.

Another good video. The interior of the wagons needs to be a lot lighter in colour due to the colour of the ballast dust being white in colour. Also the side chutes as well. Because of the action of the ballast pouring out of the chutes when being unloaded the paint on them wore off very quickly. Due the the centre door being a half tube in shape ( upwards) there was always some stone that stayed in the hopper after an unloading run. When staff tried to fetch this out from an open door on the side chute using their ballast forks, this would sometimes leave scratch marks on the chute. This would be the silver color of bare metal. The only sixteen needed to your train is a Shark ballast brake. I spent twenty odd years from the late seventies unloading these wagons along with Sealion, Dogfish and Catfish wagons in the P'way dept of British Rail.

Thanks for the info, they can certainly be enhanced with further effects. I'd like to add some scratches in future and work on the insides a bit more. Managed to find a pair of Sealions for sale so will be adding those to the rake soon. Cheers

For anyone reluctant to have a go at weathering their stock, just grab your most modest item of freight stock and get that first brushstroke of paint on it. Now you have to finish it, and once you have completed one item, even if it looks a bit ham-fisted, you'll likely find the bug has bitten and an addiction has been born! I'm working my way through all my stock, and the quality of my work improves with experience. The techniques shown here and by experts such as Tim Shackleton have inspired me. As a result my stock is a reflection of my "skill" and not simply a straight out of the box clone.

David larkins wagon books are invaluable in this regard, as is Paul Bartlett's photo website.
Sealion, seacow were a development of the southern railway walrus wagons, and they also had the larger whale wagons. Very much associated with the southern railway and region, but in later years they did travel.
However, catfish, dogfish and such were likely to be more common on other regions with shark ballast vans (not permitted on the southern due to the 3rd rail).

I worked on the railway all my life . We had an incident with a wagon , very similar to this . Which could have been very nasty . It was in the middle of the winter and the P-Way were relaying . After the new track went in, ballast had to be dropped on top using wagons very much like this . The doors were opened to drop , but nothing happened . Before anyone could stop him a new starter who had not been on the job very long got under a wagon and started poking up with a crowbar ! The boss grabbed him and pulled him out . He could have been killed . What had happened . There had been heavy rain, that had froze the stone together . If it had all come out at a rush , he could very well have been buried under it all !

What about half a ton of ballast in one end of an empty that’s not quite empty. And a few stones caaught on the platforms. When we were shoving a train of these back into 3 bridges yard and we’d stopped in the platform before we’d got the dummy for the yard, a Japanese tourist stepped onto the train. Not a surfer, he obviously thought it was the stopper to Vic.

Its going well. I've finished all the metalwork and am now in the process of painting it. Up to 772 man hours so far. Once its painted I'll start filming some videos for it. Cheers

Given all the photos I took of Sealions and Seacow in the 1980s those wagons are *FAR* too under weathered.
In all my pictures you can hardly see the data panels. The steps and rails around the ends are basically mucky rust coloured, with only the handles looking white-ish. You can make out that the tops are yellow/orange but it's almost a hint.

imthink rust usually ocurrs where people touched the steelmin manufacture..
    so think hand prints..

2:56 "In the late '80s, when this colour scheme was only about 10 or so years old."
Really? I thought the "Dutch" scheme was only introduced around the time of sectorization, i.e., in the late '80s. Was it being used on wagons before then? I have a fairly complete set of Platform 5 Motive Power Pocket Books from the mid '80s to early '90s, and the summer/autumn 1990 edition describes the "Dutch" scheme as "brand new" in a photo caption for a class 31 locomotive. I've annotated some class 31s in my copy of the 1989 edition as being painted in all-over grey. But I don't think any locomotives were painted in departmental grey before then.

Something you COULD do, is mark up the wagons as the loads examiner would have done on the T3's, scratching 'Half', 'Full', etc with a piece of ballast into the paint.
Just an extra piece of realism. Doesn't even matter if it doesn't match the load, because the scratched in note would still be there 20 years later!

It would seem like all the weathering to make that correct to thr time period you would also change the numbers

No, what he has done is more than good enough. Show some support instead of criticising.

Richard thanks. Just saw the Dave interview tonight. Youdiscussed modelling influences like Luke Towan. Here's one I highly recommend: ruclips.net/video/_uD6MD-GfCk/видео.html It is by sebb at Sebb's 1zu87 and he's great at weathering. Keyword:Alterung. German , but picture says it all. Thanks to Both.

I am REALLY surprised how low you layout is, why did you decide to have it that low??

    • @EverardJunction
      @EverardJunction  5 лет назад

The attic has a sloping roof on both sides. The higher I have the layout the smaller the layout has to be. I wanted the largest layout possible so it has to be low down.

@@EverardJunction Well that makes sense, I should have thought of that...
