- I often get asked to weather wagons without using an airbrush, so here it is!
Airbrushes have their place in weathering and modelling, but today we've used brushes and sponge techniques instead.

I lived near white city Unigate depot when I was little around 1970 and you would see the sidings full of well weathered milk tanks and warships too ,nice work I use to ask my wife for her used make up brushes and sponges the looks she gave me until she realised what I wanted them for 😂😂😂😂

You can do excellent weathering by using a childs water colour paint set but instead of water you use liquid soap as part of the mix. It dries matt and is quite robust and lasts as long as you want. Obviously if you want to make it permanent spray it with clear varnish.

But to add, this is a really good example of how good weathering can be without even picking up an airbrush.
I still to this day prefer had applied weathering and only look at the airbrush as a means of putting paint on before re-working, blending, filtering etc.. that same way I did with a paint brush.

Thank you. I agree. Applying the paint with an airbrush is usually just the first step. I also tend to rub some off, or add an effect. For heavier weathering, the airbrush can be too fine and not leave any texture, so brushing, stippling or sponging is the way to go.
For just a general layer of dirt and grime, you can’t beat an airbrush though
@@BuntersYard agree with that in regards to a general layer of dirt. Before I got into airbrush work I'd hit all my underframes in powders and a touch of enamel wash and that was pretty much it, but would take an age to do so many layers.
I would say that the airbrush is now my number 1 choice for doing underframes, cuts down the time and the end result is just as good if not better.

Looks absolutely fantastic! I can't wait to try that on a wagon at some point. Oddly a sponge is what I used to do the rust on my water tower a year and a half. But then I've forgotten all about that technique until your video reminded me just now. So easily to forget all these techniques if you aren't using them regularly. Thank you for sharing.

Glad to help. An airbrush isn't essential. It has its uses though
Brillian work it just shows that you can achieve fantastic results without an airbrush. I have some covered hopper cars that i will be weathering soon once i get my hands on some weathering powders i can start those.

Almost exactly the same method I use. I thought I might pick up a few tips but I guess great minds think alike. I model in both 0 and N and I seldom use an airbrush these days. Still fascinating to watch. Go well.

The tanker you chose looks great! I do love a three-wheeler. I have an air brush but i am pants at it. This is very informative for me and many others by looking at the comments. Great video and keep it coming .
Many thanks. Don’t give up on the airbrush. You’ll see by the comments fro the ScrapLine that we agree the airbrush definitely has its place in the weathering tool box. Practice on some old wagons and, as with most things, less is more. You can always add more paint. It’s more difficult to take it away. Good luck
@@BuntersYard i have loads of wagons i can practice on. It does have a space in the weathering box for sure
Go for it. By the way, if you soak your wagon in meths for 5 minutes, you’ll get most of the weathering off, and then you can try again!

I have one question ! When you’ve used weathering powders do they adhere to the damp paint ! But a very interesting video and the waggon looks really impressive. 👍

Sometimes. If it a wagon thats going to be handled then i'll use a matt varnish. One light 'dust' coat and then another coat when its dried. If you apply the first coat too heavily you can wash the powders away.

@@burgermaster4u2 I used to use Testors Dullcote spray can. However, they stopped supplying the UK, so I now use Tamiya matt laquer. TS-80. It delivers a nice fine mist coat. I actually prefer it to Testors.
Nice weathering! Can I ask what sponge or cloth do you use to apply the weathering paints like in the video with?
Hi there, bit off topic but do you get any problems with these 6 wheel tank cars. I have 7 of the pre-weathered Dapol ones and they are a disaster on our club layout (PECO). I’ve checked and adjusted using wheel gauge and even tried substituting some of the wheel sets with Hornby ones to no avail. I tried adding 5g of weight to a couple of them but didn’t help. Any ideas?🇦🇺🤞🥺
Hi. Sorry that i haven't replied sooner. My layout is end-to-end, so don't really have any curves to negotiate. If i did though, i'd possibly look at removing the flange from the centre wheels.
Maybe other viewers will have another fix?
