  • Hopefully this video will help you decide whether to invest in a Gelli Plate or make your own. I made my gelli plate a couple of years ago, and it is now a bit pitted and weathered. I could of course melt it in the microwave, but I love the texture it provides. What do you think?
    Here's the link to Lindsay Weirich's (The Frugal Crafter) video where she shows you how to make one: • Make_a_permanent_gelat...

    Nice to see your comparison of the two plates. Good results from both. I always thought the homemade would go mouldy but after two years yours is still going strong. Thanks 'Nina.

    You can renew your old gelli plate if you wish by cleaning off the surface with alcohol - melting it in a plastic bowl in the microwave - pour the liquid in your brownie square - put it in the fridge for 2 hours - a new gelli plate

    Great video! My gelli plate is also homemade using Lindsay's updated recipie and was made about 2-3 years ago. I agree about the added texture of the older plate is wonderful. I seem to remember her saying that you could also remelt the gelli plate and let it set up again if you needed to. Thanks for this video....I too was wondering about the comparison of the 2 plates. Sending love your way.

    Really nice prints fom both plates Nina! I am undecided which I liked best because they each produced really nice patterns and textures. I only have a home made one myself and dont see me being able to afford a store bought one any time soon - but I am happy with the results I get from that. i like both...the pitting comes from the paper or brayer pulling up bits off the homemade plate...made a new one (8 x 8") and a 5 " round one last night...love both...will remelt the new one and add more gelatin as it's a bit wobbly. the round plate was my old 8x8 square remelted and it's firm and thick and i love it...sure...someone is going to bless me with the GE plates...in the meantime...i have a small collection of microwave glass square, rectangle and round plates to house my 'gelli's' and for someone who doesn't bake, a growing group of baking pans...

    • @NinaRibenaMixedMedia
      @NinaRibenaMixedMedia  7 лет назад

    Hi Nina. I just got my Gelli Plate recently but have been very disappointed with the results I've been getting up to now. I think I am using the wrong types of paint. I have Dylusions paints, Jane Davenport paints and then a very cheap Dala acrylics paint. I've gotten the best results with the Dylusions, but with the others I never get a second print even though you can see the paint on the plate. I think the paint is drying too fast. I live in South Africa so we do not have the wide variety of craft supplies that you do, but what do you suggest - must I use a cheaper, thinner paint or is the problem not in the paint but something else that I am doing wrong? Please help if you can. Due to our bad economy, art supplies here are EXTREMELY expensive and I would hate to think that I have just wasted all that money to buy the plate and now I can't use it. Thanks Santa

      +Santa Roos Hi Santa, sorry to hear you are experiencing issues with your gelli plate. I am no expert, but I may be able to offer some suggestions. I have used all types of paints on my gelli plates, from cheap kids poster paint to student grade such as Liquitex Basics and have not experienced any issues, although cheap craft paints which are thinner seem to work best. Some paints dry quicker than others and this may be your issue. There are a couple of thing you can try. Firstly, try thinning your paints down with a small amount of water. This will dilute the colour slightly, but might help you achieve a better impression. You can also purchase a flow medium which will thin your paint without affecting the colour. Also look up slow dri retarder. You may even be able to add some gel medium (which you may already have) to your paint to help it flow better. Gelli Arts have started selling a speciality paint with a longer open time. I imagine this is regular paint with some kind of retarder added to it. I hope that helps😊

      Chances are we will never get the specialised Gelli Arts paint here and if we do it will only be a few colours. We do however get retarders here and I will speak to my craft shop to get the best one. You are truly kind to make time to answer my questions. I appreciate it. Regards Santa

    I made a homemade one, I love the way it feels but after a day it tore and had holes in some spots

      Special K someone remade theirs and added more gelatin. Some things you need to keep trying at. This whole process isn't all that easy.

    I preferred the more artistic look you produced with your home-made Gelli Plate. Both were nice.

    It seems that the home made one is absorbing more color than the manufactured one, maybe because it isn't totally flat. was it like that in the begin with?
    I mean, does the homemade is not totally flat from start?

    • @NinaRibenaMixedMedia
      @NinaRibenaMixedMedia  7 лет назад

      +Irit Avraham It was flat when I first made it, and I could easily re-melt it again, but I like the texture from the pitting. 🙂

    Homemade prints onto fabric perfectly as it has a much more spongy surface to hold medium. Shop doesn't....

    You put far more paint on the homemade plate. Hence the two pulls and deeper color. The purchased plate doesn't lighten color -- you just used FAR less paint.

    The homemade one is 2 years old? If so that's probably why it's more textures due to cracks. Either way both pretty. Thanks for sharing. Make a new homemade one and compare them.

      Nina Ribena your welcome! I just bought a speedball Gelli plate today and it works wonderfully. It actually wasn't that costly. I have all the ingredients for the homemade Gelatin plate. I will make a homemade one soon I also ordered a Gelli Arts Gelli plate. They all are a bit different. I wanna do a comparison with the three. I think there is one more brand on the market stampendous, I believe. I watched a tut on it and it didn't stamp very good. The plate appeared to be a harder plastic/rubber. Thanks again for the comparison.

      janette aguirre-terry I have used home made gelli plates, and purchased ones. The large Stampendous one is my least favorite. Don’t know if it is because it’s so thin, or in fact it is a harder material as you noted. But yeah, not a fan of that one.

    I just made a homemade jelly plate yesterday. It is as clear and smooth as my shop bought one.
    You are comparing a two year old home made plate with a newer store bought jelly plate. This is not a good comparison.
    Why don’t you clean up you home made one really well, then cut it up, melt it down in the microwave and make a new one and rthen compare the two? This does not make sense. At all.

      Hi Golaleh. Thank you for your comment and feedback. To me it makes perfect sense as it’s showing my viewers the difference between a home made plate over time and a commercial one. Of course I could melt my homemade one, but I happen to like the texture it gives as if deteriorates. I did mention in the video that my homemade plate could be melted to make a new smooth one.

      Thanks Stephanie, I do yes. I love the texture of my homemade one so much and used it again in a recent video. I’ve decided to leave it just the way it is as I have my commercial one if I want a smoother finish 💕
