Lindsay, a great diy tip for the fun foam ones, so that you can use one hand with them and they wont bend as easy, is to glue a popsicle stick to them to keep from them bending :)
What timing for this video! I'm just waiting for dh to get home from work so I can head to the $$$ store. I have a few homemade tools, but love that Betty Crocker spatula. Another tip on the embossing folders...use your extra acrylic packaging from the embossing folder packaging and emboss those for a more durable and reusable embossed pattern maker than can be washed off instead of thrown away. I also use that material to die cut and add little 'lift off' tabs on the back of one side, using packaging tape or masking tape...makes it easier to get the mask off the painted surface without marring the edge of your pattern. The brand name tools are so ridiculously expensive, so this is a truly great idea :)
@@Caelidh The old ones used to be that clear acrylic sheeting, but now the newer 3D folders are so thick and firm on their own that they only use the paper and flimsy plastic bags. I get that plastic/acrylic packaging on stuff all the time. I just got a set of Uni-ball Signo pens that came in a clear plastic box, unfortunately with some writing on it but it's still useful. I also received a box several washi tape rolls that came in a clear plastic packaging like that. These days I save them for making decorative butterfly/insect/scientific slides that are all the rage these days. I studied entomology as a kid when I was in 4-H...geesh, is that even a thing anymore? So I guess this revival in interest in slides is right in time for my second childhood :)
A frugal tip for you! You can turn a "temporary" gelatine plate into a permanent one by preventing the microbial growth that makes it liquify. We use gelatine in bacteriology laboratories for temporary slide mounts and back since the 1920s the same recipe has been used and I bet it would work for your plates too. All you need is some thymol - it is a benign chemical extracted from thyme (and smells of thyme!). When you have made your gelatine just add a couple of crystals of it and dissolve them and then let it set as normal. Easy! Where do you get it? Amazon or EBay. Or if you feel like an experiment, you could just make an infusion of thyme in hot water and add some of that to the gelatine and see if it does the same job...? Would be really cool to know if that works actually - I don't use such printing plates but i can't see why it would not work tbh. Hope that helps - if you plan to try it out please let me know so I can check for any further info for you.
+Rich Boden I made a permanent one using glycerin a few years ago and posted a tutorial. I was inspired after a cub scout trip where we turned milk into plastic at the university.
+thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich Glycerine is more expensive than thymol ;) Tbh we use glycerine too (keeps it from cracking, same as paint), but thymol is the preservative of choice for preventing mould etc too.
I know this is an old post but I can think of another use for thymol. In your watercolors. Sometimes they mold even if you think you've let them dry out long enough before you close them up. I'm thinking even thymol in the water you use to rinse your brushes would be a good thing, right? I'm a retired medical lab tech so I know molds and fungi and bacteria. LOL Does a thyme infusion have any kind of color? Would it change the color of my paints? Thanks for responding if you do. Or Lindsay, of course, if you know, what do you think? Prevention is key!
I saw a RUclips video where the thinner gelli plates can be used straight into an art journal book, rather than on paper. Easier to lay down and get to the edges. Love the video - great ideas with spatulas.
OMG the embossing folder flower was amazing~ Going to check my dollar store for some of the spatulas .. Thanks for posting.. If you ever get tired of crafting you would make an excellent auctioneer..lol so much info in less than 15 minutes ~
I have watched you print a few times now and this one in particular has finally inspired me to get a gelli plate and give it a go. The tools rock and I love the idea of using my embossing folders the way you did, endless patterns. Thanks so much for sharing and am looking forward to your return. Have a safe and wonderful trip.
Fabulous, low-cost and terrific idea's for beginners who can't just "stop.by.the.large.chain.crafting.stores" thing!! LOL! I always love your video's and learn so much! You and "Joggles" are the most talented, gifted people who are Tha you for the great teacher'ness you share with us! Thanks.🌹 Tree
Those spatulas are cool; I never really considered other uses for them. Ok, when you printed the embossing folder you got me on board with the gelli plate. Awesome tutorial. Thanks a lot.
Thanks so much for the great tips. You are such a gold mine of information. Love the idea of using texture plates on paper first instead of mucking up the plates with paint. The prints look sensational! Thanks again Sweetheart 💖
I love the way you use everyday products to create beautiful papers. Also love my homemade gelatin glycerin plate I made nearly two years ago. if it gets too messy, I wash it under warm running water and pop it in a glass jug in the microwave for 2 minutes and re set it. Thanks.
I have spent the summer making gel prints, even took my 5x7 plate on holiday with me. I've tried new things, experimenting with shimmery inks & paint mixing on the plate. A great thing to make marks is shelf lining that has a texture (designed to keep plates from moving around on shelves, I think). I know about stencils, but never thought to use embossing folders! Thanks Lindsay for a great idea. The prints you made with the flower embossing folder were my favorites. Can't wait to try this out! ~Marilee
Ok Lindsey you've put me over the edge, Running to Michaels tonight to get my Gelli block! I've been on the fencing thinking about it and your tools are awesome idea! Can't wait!
Thank you so much Lyndsey I really really enjoyed this very much. Thank you so much for sharing this with us all. I’m really going to give it a try. Please stay safe and well too xxx Mags
I am so excited. I went to Michaels to use a gift card I got for my birthday. I got a bunch of paints, plus those watercolor crayons you talked about in another video (michaels brand) for only $4!!! Thanks for your inspiration and wonderful ideas.
Awesome tips, Lindsay!!! I was just looking at the "real" gelli printing tools, and you're right--they are up there, even on Amazon.com! I just happened to find your video with a RUclips (or Google?) search the other day--so glad I did. Guess where I'll be going soon--Dollar Tree! LOL Thanks also for the tip about using an embossed cardstock to add texture. Definitely going to try that, too. Have a wonderful day! :)
Thanks Lyndsay... now you've got my wheels turning! I haven't made a print yet, but i've gathered some of the supplies i'll be needing for this. Now i need a trip to the dollar store,lol... TFS ~ L
I love you! I am just starting out and still collecting things I can use for mixed media, especially texture and stencils. I bought that set of combs! Suggestion for the comb that is concave; you can cut off one or both ends of Q-Tips, slip them over the teeth, then tape them in place. It can give great versatility by changing how many teeth are used.
Thank you for giving us these useful ways to improvise on tools Lindsay. I also saw a pastry roller - like a brayer? at the dollar store. They have a small glass trivet I use as a pallet. I bought the body wash sponge and cut it up to use in collage classes. I feel we are not done finding treasures at the dollar store hehe.
Thanks, Lindsay. Love these ideas. I am planning to make my own gelatin plate soon. Can't wait for the printing fun. You're a great inspiration. Hope your air travelling went well. Wanda
THANK YOU Lindsay for your great info packed video , it's always a treat popping in to watch your videos and learn from your great demos. I'm going to have to make a trip to Dollar Tree & see if they have those spatulas. The art store ones are so over priced! Thanks for the great idea Lindsay!
This is a great idea! I have been really struggling with what to use on my gel plate since I bought it. I am going to try and make some shapes with foam and see how it goes. I am also going to make my own stencils with my silhouette, just out of regular cardstock I think. Thanks for all the ideas!
Some texture tools I use: Lids from med bottles Old injection lens (insukin, victosa, etc) and lids Yarn straight, knotted, and beaded Cut off small pieces from oxygen vanilla Rubber bands wrapped around straws Cut up foam plates - shapes - masking Cut up bubble wrap - shapes - masking Glue patterns on foam, cardboard, etc Baby powder - highly recommend for masking Tape - for masking
This is fabulous! I have got to make my own set of spatulas. The art stores charge way too much. Your ideas are so frugally minded! Just curious to know what side of the deli paper to use? One side has a shiny finish. Thanks!
Slightly off-topic - can I make a tutorial request for a watercolour of Mount Fuji with the carpets of beautiful pink shibazakura in the foreground (moss phlox) and maybe some cherry trees coming into blossom...? I saw a photo of this year's shibazakura today and I thought it would make a wonderful watercolour using Opera Pink I guess and immediately thought of you!
thanks for these great ideas its 2020 and I am locked down in New Zealand for 4 weeks due to the Covid 19 virus so I am catching up on lots of crafting and art videos etc. And of course I will be crafting as i have plenty of material to keep me going. There is always a bright side or silver lining to the bad things. ps I dont have the virus myself so fingers crossed.
Scratch that - Gelli Plate (pro) is a plastic containing mineral oil, so their website says, which is what candle gel also is so guess one could make a candle gel plate to see if that works? If you want a really good quality plate look into the Gel Press www.gelpress.com they are the original makers of the gel press reusable mono printing plate. Now I am off to the dollar store to get me some more of those spatulas. there's only the one in my kitchen drawer right now. LOL.
Great video but I don't agree with cleaning after every use. The dried bits of paint (grunge) is quite popular with other gel plate artists, I've seen a couple dirty their plates just to get those pulled up bits of color in a later print.
My Michaels store has some tools that have long wooden handles and a spatula like end that is for creating different designs/textures. They were expensive when we first got them but are now marked down to about $4. this. Is this a good deal?
I have a home made permanent gelli plate that cracked so I melted it and re-made it.... now it seems very sticky and the paints seem to dry very quickly.... I am going to scrap it ... but what may I have done wrong?

wow. I had no idea what to do with Gelli plate. never heard of them. Thanks for great ideas.
An oldie but goodie video! Love it!
Hi. I am five years late to this video. I adore the print you made from the embossed cardstock!
Great video and tips Lindsay. Wherever you're off to, have a fun and safe trip. Cheers
Love all of your tips! I just learned about Gelli prints a few weeks ago and I'm excited to begin making some!

GREAT tutorial! Love it, Lindsay! Thanks
Thank you! I really appreciate you sharing all these tips!
So, so awesome! Thank you!!
excellent as always thank you for sharing
Love your ideas! I'm new and I have never seen this done before it's pretty cool!
Very tickled you did this tutorial, Lindsey! I have a zillion embossing folders so was really excited about this tip. Thanks, from bestie Jacqueline
Thanks for sharing. Great ideas.
So cool thanks for the great ideas 💖🫶🙏
Thank you for the vid! I don't know a lot about jelly printing and this was very informative! Lynne👩🏻🎨
Wonderful tips Lindsay, tfs
First time viewing this but I bought a bunch of those spatulas about the same time, for the same reason! Lol!
I have embossing folders.. .that is really neat... and opens up a wide variety of things I can do
I wonder how often you could use the embossed cards as stamps? after they dry
They get better with each uze!
Loved that technique! TY so much for sharing! Hugs, Masha
With the fun foam you could glue tongue depressors to them to make them more sturdy... That's what I did with mine
GREAT ideas....THANKS!!
Great idea!!! TFS!
Great ideas and techniques. Could you emboss the foam and then adhere it to a wooden block? That might be really cool. Thanks for sharing.
Some texture tools I use:
Lids from med bottles
Old injection lens (insukin, victosa, etc) and lids
Yarn straight, knotted, and beaded
Cut off small pieces from oxygen vanilla
Rubber bands wrapped around straws
Cut up foam plates - shapes - masking
Cut up bubble wrap - shapes - masking
Glue patterns on foam, cardboard, etc
Baby powder - highly recommend for masking
Tape - for masking
Oxygen cannula, not vanilla.
Didn't know my tablet autocorrects.😑
Could you also do a tutorial on embossing.....those folders etc? I'm not familiar with that, as well. Thanks so much ! Lynne
This is fabulous! I have got to make my own set of spatulas. The art stores charge way too much. Your ideas are so frugally minded! Just curious to know what side of the deli paper to use? One side has a shiny finish. Thanks!

excellent! thank you for sharing!

Great Idea! Wouldn't using a hole punch shorten the process of texturing, when you want bigger gaps in your spatula? I hope you have a nice vacation.
Was very informative
side by side comparison of home made gelli plate printing and manufactured gelli printing?

you should try cutting them with your pinking shears or decorative edge sissors
I have got to get a gelli plate !
Fun!!
I love the results!! Don't think I would do this much so now to to search utube on how to make my own gelli pad.
thanks, excellent video

so cool!
Could you do some linoleum block printmaking?
For anyone in the UK I found some similar spatulas in my local Home Bargains for £1
I recently bought a Gelli Plate. Your prints came out fabulous. What is the best paper to use? Thanks Lindsay!
Anything smooth! I use cardstock usually.
Thank you so much!
Great video but I don't agree with cleaning after every use.
The dried bits of paint (grunge) is quite popular with other gel plate artists, I've seen a couple dirty their plates just to get those pulled up bits of color in a later print.
Very cool. ;)
Put a chip clip on the foam and you will have a handle. 😀
What is a jelly plate? Never herd of that! :-)

What do people use Gelli plates for? Making cards? I've never seen this before.
i know were im going tonight.lol dollar store!
Thank you to talk about student gel plate
but what is the suitable brayer to use? is speedball soft bryer
suitable for acrylc? and how to use?
Yes, go for the soft rubber beater. I have other gel printing g videos that show how:)
Cool
I just bought one of those Betty Crocker tools. Now I’m going back for more. Maybe some herbal tea before making your videos will help you to calm down.
