Those SD-40s and other 645 powered units don't seem to know HOW to quit even when later generation units get overwhelmed and shut down or fail. SD-40 sounded like "Oh HELL NO! You are coming with me!" Love that sound of the old girl at full power, and the clean exhaust tells me she's loving this. "Those newer units have nothing on me." 40 years young and still running like a new locomotive, she's gotten the TLC she needs and now it pays off. That horn sounded just a little triumphant to me.
Man when u are that close and they are wide open u can feel every cylinder hit in the ground i love the adrenaline rush no one that doesn't love trains would understand i dont care if its emd or ge i love them both and they both sound amazing pulling like that
RICARDO GARCIA Dash 9 was failing and shutting down from my understanding and the KCS unit wasn’t loading at all do the SD40-2 provided most of the work.
@@HODMEChannel If you listen carefully, the Dash-9 was loading at first, quit just as the train started to roll, then decided "Oh, I guess we're moving" and spooled back up. It's a shame when the newer engines can't pull their weight and older power has to nearly sacrifice itself to get the job done.
Don't you mean...PULL the train UP the grade it stalled on? I was waiting for it to move to the left,(in the direction of the cars...)& when it broke into movement, it gave the illusion of the bnsf & other engine of literally opposing the helper on the end. I ended up looking for wheel sparks! Wow, talk about dead engine weight!...
Great video actuallly man. Reminds me of this one Baldwin. Blazer video on tube where this like mile long local cuts off the power and one of the locos takes off down into the yard and leaves a single gp38-2 to get that consist moving up a .3 grade into the yard and somehow he does it but it’s so damn close it’s like this pull it takes some time and skill
I live next to a Rail Yard! Switched by an SD40-2, Mega power stops, seitches trains there, diamond nearby with a Shortline, and a Cantilever only RXR for the Shortline.
Notch 8 is full throttle, inorder to stall, the wheel slip monitor senses a wheel slip and kills generator output to the slipping wheels, there is likely an electronic board issue as well
I'm thinking that if they had simply assigned two SD40-2 as head end power instead of mixing in 'newer' EMD and GE units that train wouldn't have stalled. But that's just me.
Yup ... 710s, 645s and earlier 567s. Railroad prime movers (diesel engines) are designed for some of the roughest and nastiest working conditions imaginable. Our Navy discovered that happy fact in the 1930s and began equipping harbor and oceangoing tugs, assault ships and submarines with locomotive prime movers from EMD, ALCO and Fairbanks Morse, and has never regretted the decision. EMD still provides diesels for service in driving diesel generator sets aboard ship as does GE.
Not just mines, and boats. The huge crawler platforms that hauled the Saturn V, Space Shuttles, and soon the new Artemis missions are powered by a pair of ALCO V16 2750hp engines. Almost 57 years old they still pur like kittens. Big kittens.
So Haver hill is east of Rochester and near Chester right? I know of the hill that the trains have to climb to get out of the Mississippi valley, although I do not know what it is called. I never realized they have to climb such a steep grade going east out of Rochester.
ExcessMean Yep it is between Chester and Eyota. The start of the hill is by Chester Woods or where the train is stalled in the video. Thanks for watching!
At first I’m like of course it’s stalled the dash 9 and kcs Mac are both offline, or broke down……with the sd40 pulling hard cause in notch 8 it literally sounds like it’s gonna peel your ears off your headpiece 😂here’s another engineer who’s not playing games, he wasn’t worried bout snatching no knuckles either ….this is what this video reminded me of except it’s two of them screaming and watch yet again as some junky GE newer stuff gets em stuck and they gotta call in for EMD OLD SCHOOL POWER, the magic happens around 5:00 min in the video, crank up the volume and listen to the helper set bout to snatch it clean over the state line lol ruclips.net/video/lUg-YipimUA/видео.htmlsi=swAfoZBj95CZi5JQ Also good thing thing for the ole faithful GP38-2 huh? 😂😂 and wow those rails look like curly fries 🍟 or a motor cross track when you looking straight down them lol.
Nah, just replace the GE and SD-70 with a second SD40-2. Maybe less horsepower on paper, but these old dray-horses won't quit like the newer power did.

Love the sound of the 645!!!

Pro trick: you can watch series at Flixzone. Been using them for watching a lot of movies during the lockdown.
@Leon Tucker Yea, have been using Flixzone for months myself :)
The house on the hill overlooking the tracks, hahhaha awesome I want to live there :)
Same here! Couple places close by that get to hear them rumble by.

From the looks of the rails a lot of wheel spin has been going on
Very common spot for wheel slip. Fair amount of trains on this line are underpowered for these hills.

Definitely stretching the 1500 amps at 5 minutes. Making it hard on the DC equipment.
Great work
If that leader had been a former Milwaukee Road unit that would have been cool to see this SOO GP38 pushing in the rear.
Many ex-MILW SD40-2's have struggled on this line.
I always think something has to give, then BANG!
Traction motors did! They burnt two up in the video. The smell was really strong of electrical burning.
All that jointed track.
At the time this was filmed it was.
The shear brute power the sound so beautiful.
Sounds great! Nice catch!
One of the best videos without a doubt! :)

Unbelievable the junk BNSF and KCS units were both failing and that poor old SD40-2 had to do all the work.
Pulled the whole train

Superb video.
Somebody needs to make about a dozen trips down those rails with a tamper and a regulator or two.
Plenty of EMDs in real big mine equipment n tugs

They should've sent for Big Boy. He would've snatched those cars up that hill by himself.
Are you serious, you not notice the track condition?
EMD pulling on that FNBS ALCo, just about par for the course eh....

Wonder how many tons of sand they put down. 😏
About all they had lol
Shoving that much power to the motors won't burn them out if they barely move?
It will and the SD40-2 in the video did get damaged. I could smell burnt electrical in the air. Found out later from the shop it did need repair.
