I get you hate Chrysler, but at least make the effort to know what your talking about. This old and outdated compass was released in 2008 and designed by Daimler Chrysler. Yet here you are again acting as if this is a result of FIAT. Hard enough to swallow what you said in another video about the Daimler merger which showed how little research you do and how your utter contempt for Chrysler has clouded your ability to be objective and transparent.
Bighamza22 over 30 years ago we had a mobile car inspector who would come and check out the car. It was a good service when buying a car and your mechanic is too far away. The other problem is having a trusted mechanic in the first place.
I agree w/ fkk youtube. Check oil & radiator level. Look closely at tire wear. Notice fuel level. Drive around town & highway for 20 minutes, listening, not talking. Does it accelerate smoothly without making noises? Does it panic stop in a straight line? Park in a Vehicle parts store several miles from where you'll be taking it back to & let it idle. Check trany fluid. Walk around car listening to the sounds it makes & look for smoke. Shut it off & get an employee to check it with one of their vehicle test boxes. Now drive it back to it's owner. More trustworthy than paying a mech & believeing he will do these things.
Scotty, I can't thank you enough for sharing the secrets of a mechanic. In one way you are working your way out of a job, but in another way you are solidifying the necessity of your trade.
Do you realize how much trouble Marty could have been saved if Doc had had one of those $5,000 scan tools? Bet that scan tool would have sniffed out those finicky time circuits!
the mustache mechanic you know kicking tires doesn’t do nothing, besides hurting your legs... when you have hummer then you can hit tires to not damage a valves, if you check tires every or other day.. but once in a while, use tire pressure gauge

The legendary reliability is long gone! A wise old mechanic friend once told me, when asked his opinion of cars vintage and modern: "They're all a piece of crap!" I'm inclined to agree with that assessment. 👍
@@cgavin1 Hehe, I had exactly that: A 1993 Toyota Corolla with the 4E-FE engine. No, it was not fast, but easily gave me 16 kilometers to the liter (~38 mpg). Even our modern Mazda 2 (also a great and reliable car) barely matches that, even though it is about 80kg lighter! Toyota Hybrids seem quite reliable. I'm eying an Auris TS Hybrid as a replacement for my Saab 9-5 2.3t in a year or two.
After taking a test drive of any used car and park it, be sure to start it again after a few minutes of sitting, especially a 3.5L Ford Edge. If it cranks over a little longer after a hot soak then there may be an issue with the fuel injectors leaking.

Novaverse in this video he doesn’t do nothing different than any other person who knows about cars will do different way.. i bought Honda Odyssey with my cousin. I checked all around the car, check fluids and look for rust, different paint. Then told him start the engine, after 3 min, told him to crank it to 2k arpms, I listen, saw than no parts are shaking or moving. Told him after the ride, is good to go. Now i just have to replace drive axle shocks, check barrings and cams, cuz he drove almost 30k miles round drip.. but engine is still like new..

I bought a $70 scan tool that's Bluetooth and can read a lot of things, including the climate controls, which is kind of odd, but good for me, plus, I can program remote entries for cars that require the $5,000 Tech-II scanner. The device is an Autel MaxiAP AP200 and can get live data from basically everything, including wheel speeds to see which one is completely out (0MPH or 0KM/H). I have a BlueDriver OBD2 scanner Bluetooth tool as well, but doesn't do a heck of a lot, sadly, but, good enough to use for figuring out what the issue is and common fixes per part.
Air Filter I usually don't bother with since they're usually cheap and easy to change yourself. Once I get it, if it isn't brand new I'll usually just throw a new one in anyway. Same with the engine oil, though I always check that before AND AFTER the test drive. Mainly checking for fuel or coolant in it. And on a test drive, always drive it with both the A/C on and off. I've seen sellers that leave the A/C on at full blast to mask problems.
At 8:41 that part was pretty fantastic actually. I've been having a rough week and that little tune 🎶 just made my life a little better. Tha k you Scotty for the longer videos!! Keep up the honest and honorable work!
Notice how scotty described everything except the live variables? I believe hes getting old and doesnt know what most of those variables are. At most he can remember some parameters from other cars and find patterns of recognition... He would have explained every variable and its purpose otherwise, as he does with everything else
I just sold a 91 Toyota Pickup that had 586000 km on the chassis, transmission and diff. The motor in it came out of a wrecked 4 Runner. The body was shot but that thing still starts, runs and shifts well and the transfer case works fine. I doubt if I will ever own anything but Toyota trucks. I'm running an 07 Tundra now and I love it.
If I recall correctly, he or somebody else said that as long as the transmission is in good condition after the accident, then the car should be fine. A Toyota with 200,000 km and in an accident will do fine, if the transmission is undamaged [edit: and no rust]. You could still get 100,000 km out of it. $5,000 CAD, including repairs, is a decent deal per km or per year. There will be better deals, though. This is all my own experience, and interpretation of what the RUclips experts seem to be saying.
Thank you, now I just learned an easier way to know if the car frame is OK or not by measuring the distances between the wheels and the front. That is the most concerning part for me as I just bought a used car and plan to get a mechanic to check it once it arrived.
I know 2 separate people that have jeep compass, both have over 200000 miles on them only ever needed water pumps and fron cv joints besides that they r still running great.

I just inherited a 2002 Buick century from a family member with probably over 175000 miles (odometer is broken ). Should I sell it now or spend lots of money to keep it for sentimental reasons? How well do these cars hold up? I’ve only ever driven Fords.
picking up my current car in may, I got myself an 06 ford falcon (about 170,000 miles) with dedicated LPG. first thing I checked was oil and coolant, then I jumped inside, tested all the windows and ran the diagnostics tests / checked for codes with forscan on my phone and my $20 obd tool before test driving and checking for new codes. all was good, I bought it, and I freakin love this car! but hey, I wouldn't have had a clue where to start if not for your videos over the years scotty surprisingly my forscan / obd tool combination is better than some mechanics, as a friend of mine took her 03 focus to a mechanic regarding the trans being a bit weird (suspected solenoid fault) and they told her that it was definitely a solenoid but couldn't tell her which one... 20 seconds later, "hey look, it's solenoids C and D" which I myself thought was unusual as its A and/or B that seem to usually crap out. luckily for my friend it's an easy fix when she gets the trans serviced next
I will freely admit that I know next to nothing about cars besides how to drive & when to take it in, so forgive me for a silly question. Is this a special temperature gauge to check the A/C? Where would I buy one & if anyone knows, how much would it cost? I'm shopping for a car & picking up tips from Scotty & another mechanic. I like that Scotty keeps it simple. The other guy, while probably a very good mechanic, completely overwhelmed me. I want to be able to do a basic check over to rule out cars with issues. Once I find one that passes the basics I'll take it to my mechanic to be checked out before buying it.
My girlfriend bought this car, Jeep Compass 2019. She has 15,000 miles on it and has taken it into the shop 3 times already for transmission issues. They keep saying, "we fixed it," or "there's nothing wrong." Every time. We're filing Lemon Law paper work now for a refund.
the problem is that you didn't go an told the dealer yourself, men dealing with men it's a different thing when men vs women talking about cars unless you don't know anything either.
i just watched a video of yours and i have to admit you said something i thought was brilliant Scotty, without quoting you, you said that autonomous cars should have their own lanes. great point/obversation,i say take that a step further and have said lanes with concrete barriers on both sides to make us even more safe !
I've been a mechanic for 45 yrs(now retired) and agree with all Scotty says...mercs bmw's land rovers! Wouldnt touch any!! I have a 2006 xtrail, and a 2010 saab 93 conv. Love them both.
The first thing you want to do-before anything else-is take it for a drive. My experience is that about 90% of used cars have steering probs --car pulls in one direction and/or steers harder in one direction. The car doesn’t have to have suffered a collision, just hit a deep manhole cover or bad bump at any speed and something’s going to bend ruining the handling of the vehicle. So, this test can rule out a bad vehicle right away. BTW, where did you get that cool electronic paint thickness gauge?
It's a Fiat motor and transmission - do we really need more info ? The buyer thinks he's buying a Jeep but he's not. A sucker and his money soon go separate ways.
In England FIAT is Fix it again Tony and Lotus Lots of trouble usually serious .And DAIMLER Benz Mercedes - Don't Buy.Stick with Volvo-Good for a million or more miles .

I know there all junk. And they don't stand by their warranty. Take your car back and it still be under warranty with something wrong and see if they will fix it .I got a omny charger 2.2 got it brand new. And it had a problem with the distributor. It had about 25000 miles on it. Had a 5 year 50000 mile warranty. I was liveing in Wisconsin at the time and I got it in niles Michigan. Took it to a dealership in Wisconsin. And he said he would not fix it that I had to take it back to Michigan to get it fixed. What kind of warranty is that. I got 96000 miles out of that car after changing 3 head gaskets. My father worked for the junkie car maker for like 32 years. And I will never buy any of there products ever again. Junk!
@@gregfuzi1069 I owned an 82 Plymouth horizon which was an knock off to that. From what my Dad told me at the time they were actually Mitsubishi engines in those. My car never had any issues in it, but I got it when it was at 70K miles, so maybe it was fixed before.
Superchuyito 1195 Guess I’ve been lucky. But then again, I don’t expect a car to last over 150,000 miles. And as much as I enjoy Scotty’s videos,l and respect his expertise, I do have to disagree with his cost calculations when it comes to his having spent only $7500 in his entire life on car purchases. If I remember correctly, he once referenced a $350 car that he then had painted for $800. I not a mechanic, so if I buy a car for $400, pay a mechanic $100 to check it out, buy 4 new tires right away ($200 at least), have the brakes done ($400), get a quick oil and filter change ($50), and maybe a pair of wiper blades replaced ($30), I am into the car almost $1200 into the car before I start driving it. I want any car I drive to start, steer, and stop without having the wheels fall off; hence, the new brakes and tires right away. I don’t have Scotty’s $5000 scanner to diagnose future problems. I don’t have his tool set or skill set to repair “the stupid thing.” So I buy new. I prefer the reliability and free maintenance I get with a new car. 1996 Town and Country 1999 Grand Caravan. 2008 Wrangler. And 2014 Wrangler 2008 Town and Country, 2017 Pacifica. Aside from recalls, no major issues with any of them. Admittedly, a small sample, but surprising in its virtual lack of any real wear or reliability issues
I worked at a Chrysler dealer as a service writer back in the 90’s. Brand new Chrysler a604 transmissions going out at 10,000 miles or less. I wrote so many warranty repairs I still remember the transmission number and this was in 1993! All of their models had issues and these were new cars. 3 out of 4 vehicles in the shop on any given day were mini vans. We opened up at 7:15 each morning and I would write repairs constantly till 5pm at night. Every morning there would be cars dropped off with keys in the drop box. When we opened the cars with people in them would be lined up down the road. Oh, and the idiots who bought these crap Chrysler’s would get out of their cars and start yelling at the unlucky service writer who went up to get the vin number in the windshield. This was the worst job I ever had. I hated that place with their inferior crap vehicles. I regrouped and started a business and was self employed for the next 19 years.
the only thing is...you need to know where the values of that data SHOULD BE compared to where it is...that is where i have trouble...say the 02 is reading 3.4V or something. it's hard to know if that is right if you don't know what it should be at to begin with. same with IAT or tank pressure or the pressure of the air coming in...idk. i still got allot to learn. but i love it
FYI Scooty,,,, until you look at high end or exotic cars all of them have great variations in paint thickness ie Toyota, Honda, Mazda, Chev, Ford, etc., it’s not just a fiat thing.
I was once advised that in factory the machines that spray them have very minimal variations that same effect can not be achieved in a spray booth by hand therefore you get much larger variations when its been resprayed plus you can get the orange peel effect if not well sprayed. Coating thickness is a good guide that it has had body repairs previously.
Mazdas used to have the worst paint, I used to have a 1990 B2200 and you could see the paint variations just by looking at it with your eyes. And it came from the factory that way. Great truck mechanically though.
If you are implying that manufacturers such as ferrari and lamborghini let alone smaller production mfrs like rolls royce or koenigsegg have more precise manufacturing standards that is opposite of reality. I remember a european journalist in the late 80s got a ferrari dino up on a lift next to an opel GT and said the differences were shocking. That hasnt changed.
@@dw1508 i get your point but how do robotic machines handle individual body parts? Correct me if I am wrong but I think the major unibody assembly gets sprayed on a rotisserie type jig with robotic sprayers programmed to uniformly follow the structure. Do smaller assemblies that get attached later in the line get the same type of precision? Could they? Obviously yes on the hood and trunk but bumpers, lower body cladding etc maybe not.
All auto manufacturers have their own levels of paint thickness and consistency and sheen , Chrysler paint is not very consistent and is generally very wavy , so all Chrysler paint is kind of decieving as factory paint may look like previous repair.

The Army Corps of Engineers was constantly measuring the paint thickness on the gates of Gallipolis Locks Replacement project, the Greek painter told me that they made them paint the gates 26 times.They measure it in mils.
I just looked into this & seems Americans & only Americans refer to thou's (as in thousands of an inch) as mils, so my apologies I'm only correct for the rest of the world as we use microns or if you're old 'thous'. Australia is same the U.K.
I've never been to Houston, but that neighborhood Scotty lives in looks nice and quiet. It reminds me a lot of my neighborhood here in southern California, about 8 miles outside of downtown Los Angeles.

Various such groups of businesses have always existed but there are always ways to game their standards. Auto repair is one of the best catagories to use Yelp for.
Scotty I believe your paint gauge readings are in microns not millimeters. 9mm thick paint would be a tad hard to do, that's the gap between bricks in a wall.
Scotty, Something else to look for to see if a car has front or rear end damage, is to look at the license plate to see if it has been damaged. It's interesting to look at a car that has a nice shiney front end or rear end that looks nice but has a beat up license plate. It'll let you know that the car has been in some kind of collision.

@@jamesmedina2062 lol where did you get that idea? My friend inherited a 2002 golf when her son died. Wouldnt pass CA smog gas turbo engine. Needed this whole system rebuilt for $2200 pump was bad and its plumbing all rotted. Only purpose was to clean emissions for the first 30 seconds of operation in the morning. Most cars have no similar system. Like most german cars way overengineered with needless complexity with parts that are astronomically expensive to replace. German cars are okay first 5-7 years of operation but you get in the 8-15 year period or more they are endless money pits. Hondas and Toyotas not so. I drive an 07 honda odyssey EX-L with the awesome J35 V6 and all you gotta do is change the timing belt every 100k and keep ALL fluids fresh and they are trouble free. And the odysseys body/chassis is assembled in alabama(drivetrain shipped whole from japan) if it was a pure japan honda would be even better.
batvette first of all my point was about seat comfort and smoothness of Golfs. Even if you had to pay 10k extra to drive a comfortable car for ten years versus a car with crappy comfort, it would be worth it. Medical insurance is very expensive and people would be wise to use comfortable seats especially if you spend a lot of time in your car. Not all generations of Golf are the same. I like newer ones than 2002. more like 2007 onward. I will give you all of what you said about mechanical drivetrain reliability but my point was not about that. Golfs are also fast and fun so you also win those attributes as well.

In the UK we can call the AA and they'll give the car a 128 point check for around £140.

After taking a test drive of any used car and park it, be sure to start it again after a few minutes of sitting, especially a 3.5L Ford Edge. If it cranks over a little longer after a hot soak then there may be an issue with the fuel injectors leaking.

Novaverse in this video he doesn’t do nothing different than any other person who knows about cars will do different way.. i bought Honda Odyssey with my cousin. I checked all around the car, check fluids and look for rust, different paint. Then told him start the engine, after 3 min, told him to crank it to 2k arpms, I listen, saw than no parts are shaking or moving. Told him after the ride, is good to go. Now i just have to replace drive axle shocks, check barrings and cams, cuz he drove almost 30k miles round drip.. but engine is still like new..

I bought a $70 scan tool that's Bluetooth and can read a lot of things, including the climate controls, which is kind of odd, but good for me, plus, I can program remote entries for cars that require the $5,000 Tech-II scanner. The device is an Autel MaxiAP AP200 and can get live data from basically everything, including wheel speeds to see which one is completely out (0MPH or 0KM/H). I have a BlueDriver OBD2 scanner Bluetooth tool as well, but doesn't do a heck of a lot, sadly, but, good enough to use for figuring out what the issue is and common fixes per part.

Step 2, learn how to read the data from the $5k scan tool
Air Filter I usually don't bother with since they're usually cheap and easy to change yourself. Once I get it, if it isn't brand new I'll usually just throw a new one in anyway. Same with the engine oil, though I always check that before AND AFTER the test drive. Mainly checking for fuel or coolant in it. And on a test drive, always drive it with both the A/C on and off. I've seen sellers that leave the A/C on at full blast to mask problems.

I just sold a 91 Toyota Pickup that had 586000 km on the chassis, transmission and diff. The motor in it came out of a wrecked 4 Runner. The body was shot but that thing still starts, runs and shifts well and the transfer case works fine. I doubt if I will ever own anything but Toyota trucks. I'm running an 07 Tundra now and I love it.

If I recall correctly, he or somebody else said that as long as the transmission is in good condition after the accident, then the car should be fine. A Toyota with 200,000 km and in an accident will do fine, if the transmission is undamaged [edit: and no rust]. You could still get 100,000 km out of it. $5,000 CAD, including repairs, is a decent deal per km or per year. There will be better deals, though.
This is all my own experience, and interpretation of what the RUclips experts seem to be saying.
You can use a magnet to check for accident damage as well. (Won't stick to bondo)

Just bought a 2016 Camry SE. It has some parking lot scratches but runs silky smooth with 38,800 miles on it. Hope to get another 200,000 out of it.

Thank you, now I just learned an easier way to know if the car frame is OK or not by measuring the distances between the wheels and the front. That is the most concerning part for me as I just bought a used car and plan to get a mechanic to check it once it arrived.

I just inherited a 2002 Buick century from a family member with probably over 175000 miles (odometer is broken ). Should I sell it now or spend lots of money to keep it for sentimental reasons? How well do these cars hold up? I’ve only ever driven Fords.

picking up my current car in may, I got myself an 06 ford falcon (about 170,000 miles) with dedicated LPG. first thing I checked was oil and coolant, then I jumped inside, tested all the windows and ran the diagnostics tests / checked for codes with forscan on my phone and my $20 obd tool before test driving and checking for new codes. all was good, I bought it, and I freakin love this car!

surprisingly my forscan / obd tool combination is better than some mechanics, as a friend of mine took her 03 focus to a mechanic regarding the trans being a bit weird (suspected solenoid fault) and they told her that it was definitely a solenoid but couldn't tell her which one... 20 seconds later, "hey look, it's solenoids C and D" which I myself thought was unusual as its A and/or B that seem to usually crap out. luckily for my friend it's an easy fix when she gets the trans serviced next

I will freely admit that I know next to nothing about cars besides how to drive & when to take it in, so forgive me for a silly question. Is this a special temperature gauge to check the A/C? Where would I buy one & if anyone knows, how much would it cost?
I'm shopping for a car & picking up tips from Scotty & another mechanic. I like that Scotty keeps it simple. The other guy, while probably a very good mechanic, completely overwhelmed me. I want to be able to do a basic check over to rule out cars with issues. Once I find one that passes the basics I'll take it to my mechanic to be checked out before buying it.
My girlfriend bought this car, Jeep Compass 2019. She has 15,000 miles on it and has taken it into the shop 3 times already for transmission issues. They keep saying, "we fixed it," or "there's nothing wrong." Every time. We're filing Lemon Law paper work now for a refund.
the problem is that you didn't go an told the dealer yourself, men dealing with men it's a different thing when men vs women talking about cars unless you don't know anything either.
So I'm guessing it was still under warranty, sometimes they milk it out, if they can until the warranty expires.

The first thing you want to do-before anything else-is take it for a drive. My experience is that about 90% of used cars have steering probs --car pulls in one direction and/or steers harder in one direction. The car doesn’t have to have suffered a collision, just hit a deep manhole cover or bad bump at any speed and something’s going to bend ruining the handling of the vehicle. So, this test can rule out a bad vehicle right away.
BTW, where did you get that cool electronic paint thickness gauge?
It's a Fiat motor and transmission - do we really need more info ? The buyer thinks he's buying a Jeep but he's not. A sucker and his money soon go separate ways.

First problem I see is a chrysler product
I know there all junk. And they don't stand by their warranty. Take your car back and it still be under warranty with something wrong and see if they will fix it .I got a omny charger 2.2 got it brand new. And it had a problem with the distributor. It had about 25000 miles on it. Had a 5 year 50000 mile warranty. I was liveing in Wisconsin at the time and I got it in niles Michigan. Took it to a dealership in Wisconsin. And he said he would not fix it that I had to take it back to Michigan to get it fixed. What kind of warranty is that. I got 96000 miles out of that car after changing 3 head gaskets. My father worked for the junkie car maker for like 32 years. And I will never buy any of there products ever again. Junk!

@@gregfuzi1069 I owned an 82 Plymouth horizon which was an knock off to that. From what my Dad told me at the time they were actually Mitsubishi engines in those. My car never had any issues in it, but I got it when it was at 70K miles, so maybe it was fixed before.

And as much as I enjoy Scotty’s videos,l and respect his expertise, I do have to disagree with his cost calculations when it comes to his having spent only $7500 in his entire life on car purchases.
If I remember correctly, he once referenced a $350 car that he then had painted for $800.
I not a mechanic, so if I buy a car for $400, pay a mechanic $100 to check it out, buy 4 new tires right away ($200 at least), have the brakes done ($400), get a quick oil and filter change ($50), and maybe a pair of wiper blades replaced ($30), I am into the car almost $1200 into the car before I start driving it. I want any car I drive to start, steer, and stop without having the wheels fall off; hence, the new brakes and tires right away.
I don’t have Scotty’s $5000 scanner to diagnose future problems.
I don’t have his tool set or skill set to repair “the stupid thing.”
So I buy new.
I prefer the reliability and free maintenance I get with a new car.

I worked at a Chrysler dealer as a service writer back in the 90’s. Brand new Chrysler a604 transmissions going out at 10,000 miles or less. I wrote so many warranty repairs I still remember the transmission number and this was in 1993!
All of their models had issues and these were new cars. 3 out of 4 vehicles in the shop on any given day were mini vans.
We opened up at 7:15 each morning and I would write repairs constantly till 5pm at night.
Every morning there would be cars dropped off with keys in the drop box. When we opened the cars with people in them would be lined up down the road. Oh, and the idiots who bought these crap Chrysler’s would get out of their cars and start yelling at the unlucky service writer who went up to get the vin number in the windshield.
This was the worst job I ever had. I hated that place with their inferior crap vehicles.
I regrouped and started a business and was self employed for the next 19 years.
the only thing is...you need to know where the values of that data SHOULD BE compared to where it is...that is where i have trouble...say the 02 is reading 3.4V or something. it's hard to know if that is right if you don't know what it should be at to begin with. same with IAT or tank pressure or the pressure of the air coming in...idk. i still got allot to learn. but i love it

FYI Scooty,,,, until you look at high end or exotic cars all of them have great variations in paint thickness ie Toyota, Honda, Mazda, Chev, Ford, etc., it’s not just a fiat thing.
I was once advised that in factory the machines that spray them have very minimal variations that same effect can not be achieved in a spray booth by hand therefore you get much larger variations when its been resprayed plus you can get the orange peel effect if not well sprayed. Coating thickness is a good guide that it has had body repairs previously.
Mazdas used to have the worst paint, I used to have a 1990 B2200 and you could see the paint variations just by looking at it with your eyes. And it came from the factory that way. Great truck mechanically though.
If you are implying that manufacturers such as ferrari and lamborghini let alone smaller production mfrs like rolls royce or koenigsegg have more precise manufacturing standards that is opposite of reality.
I remember a european journalist in the late 80s got a ferrari dino up on a lift next to an opel GT and said the differences were shocking. That hasnt changed.
@@dw1508 i get your point but how do robotic machines handle individual body parts? Correct me if I am wrong but I think the major unibody assembly gets sprayed on a rotisserie type jig with robotic sprayers programmed to uniformly follow the structure. Do smaller assemblies that get attached later in the line get the same type of precision? Could they? Obviously yes on the hood and trunk but bumpers, lower body cladding etc maybe not.
All auto manufacturers have their own levels of paint thickness and consistency and sheen , Chrysler paint is not very consistent and is generally very wavy , so all Chrysler paint is kind of decieving as factory paint may look like previous repair.

paint is measured in microns not millimetres but other than that pretty accurate advice overall.
The Army Corps of Engineers was constantly measuring the paint thickness on the gates of Gallipolis Locks Replacement project, the Greek painter told me that they made them paint the gates 26 times.They measure it in mils.
I just looked into this & seems Americans & only Americans refer to thou's (as in thousands of an inch) as mils, so my apologies I'm only correct for the rest of the world as we use microns or if you're old 'thous'. Australia is same the U.K.
I've never been to Houston, but that neighborhood Scotty lives in looks nice and quiet. It reminds me a lot of my neighborhood here in southern California, about 8 miles outside of downtown Los Angeles.

How about get under the car and look for fluid leaks, check exhaust system, etc. etc. Gotta do that stuff!

Scotty I believe your paint gauge readings are in microns not millimeters. 9mm thick paint would be a tad hard to do, that's the gap between bricks in a wall.

Something else to look for to see if a car has front or rear end damage, is to look at the license plate to see if it has been damaged. It's interesting to look at a car that has a nice shiney front end or rear end that looks nice but has a beat up license plate. It'll let you know that the car has been in some kind of collision.

@@jamesmedina2062 lol where did you get that idea? My friend inherited a 2002 golf when her son died. Wouldnt pass CA smog gas turbo engine. Needed this whole system rebuilt for $2200 pump was bad and its plumbing all rotted. Only purpose was to clean emissions for the first 30 seconds of operation in the morning. Most cars have no similar system. Like most german cars way overengineered with needless complexity with parts that are astronomically expensive to replace.
German cars are okay first 5-7 years of operation but you get in the 8-15 year period or more they are endless money pits. Hondas and Toyotas not so. I drive an 07 honda odyssey EX-L with the awesome J35 V6 and all you gotta do is change the timing belt every 100k and keep ALL fluids fresh and they are trouble free. And the odysseys body/chassis is assembled in alabama(drivetrain shipped whole from japan) if it was a pure japan honda would be even better.
batvette first of all my point was about seat comfort and smoothness of Golfs. Even if you had to pay 10k extra to drive a comfortable car for ten years versus a car with crappy comfort, it would be worth it. Medical insurance is very expensive and people would be wise to use comfortable seats especially if you spend a lot of time in your car. Not all generations of Golf are the same. I like newer ones than 2002. more like 2007 onward. I will give you all of what you said about mechanical drivetrain reliability but my point was not about that. Golfs are also fast and fun so you also win those attributes as well.
