TY. I studied this at university, but didn't really understand any of it This proves to me that youtube teachers are oftentimes much better than real teachers.
Thank you so much, I'm studying to be an English teacher but with the pandemic situation we only have "online classes" but teachers only send pdfs and activities, with no explanation at all. Thank you!
most underrated video !! deserves much more views..i am an indian and i couldnt understand the vowels as they all sounded the same ..ur video was a life saver..why din i have this in school !
Actually, I watched many RUclips videos to learn how to voice those vowels, but I can't feel the position of my tongue until I move from 'i' to 'ae' and 'u.' Really, it's the best trick to teach someone new thanks
LAN-guage is operating system.. LAN is local area network, a guage is a guage.. He gave u a tongue so that u cud say "toung-ue" This a good one, appreciate your content English is 7.0 upgrade
This is magnificent!!!! I've been studied English for several years and this video is the best for the explanation of vowels' sounds. Definitely love it!
Thank you so much. I am just discovering these things while studying Greek pronunciation and phonology history, for ancient Greek. You make it so amazingly easy and accurate. The best thing is that you keep videos very short, so they are easy to follow along.
Manner of articulation by the trainer is absolutely stupendous and trains with passion and patience. The subject on Phonetics is little bit complicated for the non-native speakers like me, as it involves many intricacies that has to be elaborated with adequate illustrations by the the trainer who is a native speaker. Truly, the trainer is doing great justice to the job. The beneficiaries of this session are certainly lucky enough to have such a great teacher, well endowed with professional wisdom. Every single information provided by the teacher is so precious that will go a long way in attaining the linguistic mastery. Let me share that as most of our physiological systems play a key role in deciding the utterances, care has to be taken to keep them in functional state. The class is definitely lively and effective. So nice of you, Sir. Great. (Ravi)
i have seen many videos about this topic and this is the best. Perhaps, the reason is that he is talking about it instead of showing pictures all the time XDD Great video Thank you
This is a great lesson. Geniously illustrating. A lesson on comparing British and American/Canadian vowel sound could help greatly. For us Mexican English as a second language learners.
Good evening, dear Mark. This video is really important when singing English songs using youtube channels, for example. It's not so easy to follow rhyme and words without knowledge about vowels' prononciation. Thanks a bunch.🇷🇺
Amazing video! I wish I had a time machine and could send it back to my young self when I was first learning English - but I'd have to use a film reel 🤣 Coming from my native Italian, the "over-abundance" of English vowel sounds gave me a serious challenge for many years! I'm thinking about vowel again, as I'm studying Brazilian Portuguese... and wresting with "open e" vs. "closed e", etc
Omg, im gonna become and english teacher. And im definitly gonna use the same method as you with the chart. In class we were just making the sounds, i never could figure out the difference physically. Thank you so much, definitely going to subscribe.
I'd been waiting for this lesson for a long time since I learned IPA. This lesson is extremely helpful for me. I have no difficulty to learn anything in English provided you teach me. Many many many many many many thanks for this lesson!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I was ambigous in this topic as I am Nepali I haven't the genuine concept about the tongue positions with english sounds. From the diagram now I cleared.
Hi teacher! I loved this lesson. Some IPA symbols are different from those you used and some phonemes are missing (such as 3:) but I appreciated the way you produced the sounds you chose to consider and pronounce. The slight differences existing between sounds are so clear! Please make other videos on this interesting subject. Thanks
Great content again. To your question, for me personally the most difficult sound to make is being able to distinct between confusing pairs like FILL X FEEL , LIVING X LEAVING , FULL X FOOL, PULL x POOL, LID X LEAD and son on.. I find the short vowel sound harder to achieve than the long one. You asked me about the Australian accent in another video comment section, well I'd say the Aussie accent is quite unique and tricky to describe.. Aussies are known for shortening words, not pronouncing R at the end of words. To me they speak quite faster than Americans and Canadians for instance. Besides there is not that much sound variation to it.The accent is pretty homogeneous through out the country. Thanks for the video one more time.
Great! Thanks for the comment! 😃 I'll make a video about confusing pairs soon. Honestly, sometimes I can't understand Australians either. They use a lot of slang in their speech!
The most helpful video teaching vowels so far! I like the clear slide and the way contents were organized, especially the useful picture depicting the mouth and sorting different vowels out. Hope to see more videos of pronunciation. Keep up good work!

This is really interesting, especially when it comes to the middle sounds (banana etc.) Being English and from the Midlands we would use totally different vowel sounds when pronouncing these words. Move further up north in the UK and different again. Go across to Liverpool and more changes. Try Birmingham for some more confusion. Head to Scotland and good luck understanding. No wonder non native speakers have trouble in the UK and prefer to learn English with a North American accent.
Thank u so much. In our language we've almost every sound but the problem is hearing. Most of the time I can't realize the accurate sound. But I'm blessed with almost every kind of sounds. My language is Bengali.
Thanks Mad, I had a lot of fun learning this with your lesson. And yes, I was here because of the sound Ə and also Ʊ. Now I'm better. I just need practice a little bit more.
This is an amazing lesson! So well explained, so easy to follow, the best video on vowel pronunciation I've seen. I'm gonna print this vowel chart and hang it over my desk!
Thanks a lot I really appreciate this lesson and it's ver helpful because I've been working on my English very hard. In my language we only have 5 vowel sounds that's why I need to practice English vowels EVERY DAY!! 😅 Thank you so much again ☀️🍀
I like and appreciate ur efforts of encouraging non native speakers to speak English fluently but the question is how could someone subscribe and pay for all lesson from Nigeria
Hi Mark, thank you so much for the lesson. I am wondering how many vowel sounds there are in Canadian English. Some say 20,while others say 22. The reason I want to know about this is because I need to know when to use indefinite article "an". Thanks a lot in advance . You are always helpful. Blessing to you!
Thank you - I am doing the subject psychology of language and I really need to master an understanding of the use of the IPA chart to produce an assignment that is a research proposal on contrast sounds in the PAM model - so thanks for the help your video has provided in enhancing my understanding of the use of this chart.
Amazing! This video is a great help to me. Incidentally, I'm a bit confused to pronounce ' tongue forward and intermediate position' sound;' as in /beet/ and /bit/ or /feet/ and /fit/. Stay safe and keep healthy, Sir.🤗
As far as I concerned, the most difficult vovel at htr time to pronous is I.i / u , I ould like to known you secret to pronous like you , thank you so much. I live this video.
TY. I studied this at university, but didn't really understand any of it

In this case, YES, but not all the time. Over generalization from 1 sample is a fallacy in basic logic.
Thank you so much, I'm studying to be an English teacher but with the pandemic situation we only have "online classes" but teachers only send pdfs and activities, with no explanation at all. Thank you!
Good luck

Hi Mark, thank you so much for the lesson. I am wondering how many vowel sounds there are in Canadian English. Some say 20,while others say 22. The reason I want to know about this is because I need to know when to use indefinite article "an". Thanks a lot in advance . You are always helpful. Blessing to you!
Hi! 😃😃To be honest, I'm not sure how many vowels sounds there are. It might vary based on the dialect in Canada.
Did you ever find an answer? I’m from the US but we have so many informal or regionally specific sounds.
No, it is 44 or 45 sounds. And i am Indonesian. Nice to meet you all and thank you Mark.
Thank you - I am doing the subject psychology of language and I really need to master an understanding of the use of the IPA chart to produce an assignment that is a research proposal on contrast sounds in the PAM model - so thanks for the help your video has provided in enhancing my understanding of the use of this chart.
I love how you are having so much fun explaining this. Thanks a lot, I loved it and it's really helpful!
The last vowels, as you've said, are very tricky. Mainly for a beginner like I am ☺
Thank you so much for the great lesson. The most difficult vowel sound for me to make is U.
It's super sir, I am really impressed by ur class
This is the best lesson I learnt ever, from youtube or bbc or anywhere else. The picture is super brilliant!
Amazing! This video is a great help to me. Incidentally, I'm a bit confused to pronounce ' tongue forward and intermediate position' sound;' as in /beet/ and /bit/ or /feet/ and /fit/. Stay safe and keep healthy, Sir.🤗
Is it also the middle part of the tongue that moves backward or forward to make sounds like g/K and S (as in she")/ dg (as in judge")?
I appreciated the class. I would like to know if it exists one rule to transcribe "oo" as in "foot", "blood", "mood" etc.
Excellent ! Thank you 👍😃
It is the best lesson I never ever watched before . So helpful 👍😘
😃😃
great video ! you have 12 sounds but there are 5 vowels with each short and long sound. where does each short vowel sound land on your chart ?
