Did Northern Illinois get screwed over at the end? I don’t get why the clock started running so quickly…
It was only 2 seconds left which wasn’t enough time to run another play. They still probably should’ve reviewed it tho
Edit: Might wanna read my 2nd comment before you wanna disagree with me
They did not get screwed because the receiver did not catch in the end
@@DaniBoi_AU1113 idk man I feel like it’s enough time if you get a first down. They got right up to the line too.
No.
@@jaiden_knudson7898 that’s true. I guess it kinda evens out cuz that definitely wasn’t a catch.
NIU gets hosed by the refs and still 5 seconds later their quarterback is laughing with and congratulating the other team. What a great bunch of kids on both sides!
“They made history, first win in program history” 😂
First bowl win
Didn’t they go undefeated last year?
It wasn't trash talk, Vierce. He's laughing that the announcer didn't say bowl win.
That announcer was trash during this entire video.
I guess defense was optional in this game.
That 10 second injury runoff really killed them.
very necessary rule in highschool a safety came into the game and told me “coach says we need an injury fake a cramp” and before I could even get the refs attention on my fake cramp one of my dline was screaming bloody murder... but I inspected him and he may have been faking himself
Yep dude has to limp off there
I was at this game, I said when I saw it that he needed to go off the field tapping his helmet exiting via Coastal Carolinas sideline. If you’re injured you can exit the game via your own discretion.
Sadly NIU did get screwed. Guy was 100% out of bounds. And the 2 seconds isn’t supposed to start till the ref is 5 yard behind the ball placement
his knee was down inbounds but they got screwed because they started the clock to early.
@@marksapier2603 what do you mean the clock started too early? It never should have stopped.

I worked in television production for ESPN, FOX and CBS for almost 18 years so I know a thing or two about production and what makes it a high quality production. With that being said, you guys do a great job. I would rather watch your highlight packages rather than any of the big network’s productions. I absolutely love the year end packages you guys do of things like “All safeties in 2020” and “All pick 6’s for 2020,” etc.
Thanks so much that really means a lot to me.
Yeah RUclips is the place to go for highlights now tbh. This channel especially bc he/she cuts out all the fluff, and just shows the meat and potatoes.. nothing is shown that we didn’t click for

I love how after Lombardi fumbled it, the dude who picked it up got tackled by his own teammate
I don’t think I’ve ever seen that! Dude wrapped up and everything! Lmao
We were in the stands looking at each other like, “what just happened?”
That's actually a really smart play. Get down.
Yeah I mean it was 100% intentional though.
@@CK-bd8tj yeah no way you’d want to run it back and go up 2 scores! That would be silly. Lmao
Yea I definitely feel like the refs screwed them over on the last play by not stopping the clock or checking if it was out
Whenever Coastal Carolina is in the Cure Bowl, something crazy is bound to happen in the 4th quarter.
FOR SURE!
The ref was literally blocking the snap…
Amazing start to Bowl Season so far, I have to say.
After this crazy season I expect nothing less. Hopefully we get all the chaos and crazy out of the way before the playoffs though :D
Can we just admire that stop that coastal made on 4th and 1 on the surprise snap
Am I the only one who feels like these surprise snaps aren’t that surprising. The whole defense is pointing it out and it just doesn’t seem to be that great of a trick play.
Not 1 person on D fell for that bs
@@tylerwhaley992 that shows that the fake was terribly executed by the offense
@@jimmyloudon3688 I agree with you but it’s hard enough to stop someone on 4th and inches anyway
No one was surprised. Everyone on earth saw that coming a mile away.
These bowl matchups of teams not from the big conferences are usually always exciting. I didn't see this one but from the highlights it didn't dissapoint. Coastal has made a name for itself for sure in football. I do have to say though, is there a better football name than "Rocky Lombardi"? He should be a nose tackle or middle linebacker though!
I love that people bitched and moaned for years about review, yet they never use it on plays that actually count

Being an NIU alum, that was a tough loss. But even if they had won, it wouldn't have made a difference in the vast scheme. It was basically an exhibition game. As for the end, it's hard to get too worked up over it. They had their chances and couldn't get the job done.
NIU has a great team and are mac champions. Great szn they are going in the right direction
They might be really good next year and their coach could be another power 5 prospect
I don't think a single player on that team would consider this an "exhibition game"
maybe it feels like that to you, but undoubtedly they left their heart out there on the field
Come on. Don’t diminish bowl games to “exhibition games”
Nice profile pic. At least you can go ease the pain of the loss by listening to some Rush!
the ref never even blew the whistle, they just resumed the clock once he placed the ball down.
In a game with precious little defense, CC had a great heads up play to stop the "QB walks off, direct snap" play.
I love watching these bowls, always interesting
Bowl SZN is the best
Congrats to Coastal Carolina on their first win in program history

That's what I was thinking watching it. He wasn't even close to a 1st

Perhaps. I don’t know dick about these programs. I just know what Rocky is capable of and it’s just great to see him play
NI totally got hosed here... great game and really awesome ending up until that point. those officials should have cleared the field and reset that clock to 2 seconds, blow the whistle and let that center get that ball off...
officials should have reviewed the "catch" because if it wasnt one, it creates a change of possession. they messed this play up every way possible.
A great bowl game! Congratulations to both teams. Firstly NIU covered the spread, out gained CCU in total yardage and never gave up.
Secondly to go from 0/6 to 9-5 and a MACC is incredible. Thirdly this young team might repeat as MACC and improve greatly next year, by winning games by more than a TD.
CCU defense stopped NIU's offense twice before the final drive. They came back in the second half and won the game.
They won 11 games in 2 consecutive years, with all losses being close games.

Why does the clock start when the ref is still impeding the snap?
It's likely that the pass was incomplete at the end anyways but the clock should have stopped after the first down and only been restarted on the whistle. That didn't happen. They did have time for one more play.
RIGHT! The ref indicated complete pass! so either way there should have been one sec left for a play!
@@surffishermanandcrossbowki9457 It was a 4th and 1 play. Ball would've turned over on downs.
@@oliverk.401 no. The refs said he caught it which would have made it 1st down. Unless they’re saying he caught it and never made it out. But it looked like he never caught it which would have been been a turnover. But even then the clock should have stopped
@@ez8308 Yeah, exactly what I'm saying. If it was incomplete, it was a turnover. Having one more play to run is inconsequential.
It looks like it was caught and then he lost possession before he got out of bounds. Idk what that entails as far as the rules but I’m guessing it’s something to do with that.
There's no reason that last pass shouldn't have been reviewed. Anyone who's watched any college ball at all has seen that get called an incomplete every time. He never had control, and the game should have been over right there.
Refs just messed up the end of the game badly.
Previous play was a pass interference no call. College refs are way worse than NFL refs.
@@xuimod we must be looking at two different plays. On the 4th and one, the CB looks at the ball and reaches to block it. If he looks for the ball, he has just as much right to it as the WR does. The WR brought the ball in but dropped it on the way down, thus a missed incomplete call from the refs. Game should have ended right there. How they don't review that to even see if he was in bounds or not if baffling.
I have always loved these early bowl games.
I played football for 10 years and I could not understand what happened on the last play!
Yes the officials did make a mistake. The pass on the last play was an incompletion. College rules say:
“he must maintain complete and continuous control of the ball throughout the
process of contacting the ground, whether in the field of play or in the end zone.”
The receiver did not maintain control in the process of contacting the ground.
"A little ball movement while the player has control doesn’t change much -
even if the ball touches the ground - unless he loses that control."
The ball hit the ground and the receiver lost control, before he could tuck it away and complete the reception. Had he maintained control through the process of contacting the ground it would have been a reception/completion.
Since that was 4th down and an incomplete pass, the possession goes to Coastal with 2 seconds left. The officials made the mistake by 1. failing to stop and review the incompletion, 2. giving NIU the possession and a first down, 3. failing to explain the situation, leaving every one questioning the call. I think the official became confused in the moment and lost his concentration in the intensity of the moment.
The officials should have called a timeout to review the play and they would have seen that according to the rules, the pass was incomplete and it was Coastal's possession. I'm sure Coastal would have snapped the ball and it would have ended with Coastal winning.
Be Well !
thank for saving me from having to type all that - exactly, good on ya
True....but why NIU was throwing at the sidelines with just seconds left in the game was just plain stupid. Throw in the end zone.
@@deckerrm agreed - Very odd plus that #15 corey kid in the endzone was the only move here - hella game tho if you took the Over and wanted no D
Dear@@deckerrm ,
I Agree ! From a sound strategy perspective, they should have been throwing to receivers in the end zone. They didn't manage the end of the game in a smart way. That mistake is on them and possibly cost them the game. Good comment !
Be Well, DZ
damn I like coastal but idk about that end. Clock ran really fast, if they would have reviewed the play and said incomplete I would feel better about it, but that just didn't look right. The ref is still back peddling to his spot when the clock is at 0:00 let alone started, the clock already ticked off a second before the center could grab the ball and he was right there, any other game the center is holding the ball fully ready when the clock starts.
Outstanding continual drive.
The clock started before the ref even blew the whistle. The clock was at 0:00 before they even blew the whistle. Officials completely screwed that up
First bowl win in history! Les go!!!
Really hard to believe
We’ve waited so long for this
Why the refs blitzing him at 1:37 😂
Honestly the key play of the game was probably that 2nd down play while NI was still up when the ball carrier slid before the first down marker
Kind of glad to see that trick play fail. Getting tired of the ones where the quarterback pretends they are not going to hike it by walking away.
Announcer: *correct* "Clock will go on Referees wistle"
Time Guy: "I put to much money on Coastal to win!" *Screws Over NIU*
Yes, NIU got screwed. The official was not out of the way of the offense in order to hike the ball. The officials' whistle shouldn't be blown until all officials are in their correct position.
Number 52 made a great play on the 4th down run stop
I like how the announcer said it was Coastal Carolina's "1st win in program history". Guessing he meant first bowl win but can imagine soon schools who have never won a D-1 game will be bowl eligible.
NIU got screwed on that last play
NIU should've had one more play to win it all. Referee was still in the way from spotting the ball before they had a chance to run their last play.
They got robbed. Absolutely.
First win in program history.
Awesome
Wasn't the guy that picked up the fumble at 2;10 tackled by his own teammate? Why did that guy tackle him? Blew my mind when I saw that. It wasn't an accidental tackle.
I was pulling for Coastal to win but that last play was some BS. They ran the clock before the ball was even set after getting a first down which STOPS THE CLOCK. The Clock Operator really screwed over NIU for one last chance to win the game.
I guess you could say that but he didn't even catch the ball for that first down to begin with it looks like
@@launchbase4944 If he didn't catch it then it should had been a turnover and the time shouldn't had gone in that case. Could had been a review.
Why does his own teammate tackle him at 2:09?
Wow I didn't notice that.
Yea I didn’t understand that at all. I’m guessing he thought it was smart because they could eat up more clock than if he scored, but it was a terrible decision since Coastal Carolina ended up having to punt it back.

4:30 The clock should have started after the ref got out the way and not right after he sets the ball down?
If I was northern Illinois I would file a grievance on the refs they had 2 seconds and he blew the whistle before he was out of the line of play.
It was incomplete on 4th anyway. Should’ve reviewed that first
1:06 If you look at 65, at the bottom in the backfield. It looks like him looking back at the RB is what gave away the surprise snap
I’m so happy Coastal won. Being from Conway and watching the games in real life. It also makes me happy to their first ever bowl win. Chants Up
#11 screwed his own team by not hobbling off the field and making them have to do a 10 second run off.
(2:06) #10 tackling his own boy with 3:21 left. Priceless.
So, what happened at the end there: because it was inside the 10, the clock doesn't start at the mark of the chains (because there are no chains), rather it starts at the mark of the down marker.
It's like peewee football with a running clock no matter what
Should have been a turnover on downs at the end there. That was 100% an incomplete pass.
I agree but there was a pass interference no call on the previous play. So maybe the refs made up for that screw up.
I dont care about either of these teams slightly but the refs blew this fucking game. The clock starts when then ref blows his whistle, this is done to give the defense an opportunity to substitute to match the offense, while not penalizing the offense for the defense running players on the field, what happened in this game just can't happen, it hurts competition.
End of the game, both coaches shake hands and congratulate each other.
This is way I love College Football games.
I don't think it was a catch.
@@SmartDew unfortunately u have to have complete control even after the catch. Should have been reviewed

McCall is really impressive, he may have a bright future ahead of him
I think he does. Not the biggest arm, but dude is so so accurate. Very good athlete as well. I hop he transfers into a P5 school and shows out.
As a guy who goes to school with him, idk. He has a tendency to stare down receivers he’s about to target, has great ball placement tho.
@@coledavagian4454 Yeah that is kinda why I want to see him at P5 level. He wont be able to do that as much and the throwing windows will be smaller.
He set the all time NCAA passing efficiency record this year and is considered a top 100 pick already. After another big yr next year his draft stock will skyrocket.
Just keep checking it into the end zone, especially with under 10 seconds.
Debate catch/no catch if you want, I can see both sides. However, the official on the sideline (Head Linesman) signals w/ arms over his head indicating a catch for 1st down stopping the clock. He then signals at his waist by rotating his right hand at the wrist, signifying the receiver was marked down inbounds & that the game clock should start when the ball is made ready for play.
SECTION 2, ARTICLE 4. A dead ball is ready for play when: a. With the 40-second play clock running, an official places the ball at a hash mark or between the inbounds marks and steps away to their position.
The ball is not ready for play until the Referee blows his whistle & gives either the "Ready for play" or "Start the clock" signal (depending on situation).
There are many precedents during hurry-up and/or last-second plays that a Referee will wait until the Umpire/Center Official is in a position where they can effectively perform their duties before signaling the ball is ready for play. Even stopping a play if he feels the U/C is not in such a position.
From the replay, we notice that the clock A) starts almost the same instant C places the ball on the ground, and B) expires at about the same time C clears thru the offensive line. His back is still to the ball/line of scrimmage so he is not in a safe location & certainly not in a position to be able to perform his duties during a play. The R is not w/in the camera shot to see for sure, but the offense reacts as though he has NOT signaled the ball ready for play (or started the clock).
Also, as for the minimum time to spike the ball rule, this can ONLY be determined AFTER the ball has been snapped. The officials must note the time remaining before the snap,, then A) if a play is run, there is no issue; or B) if the ball is spiked & there was less than 0:03 remaining when the clock started, the R announces such and by rule the game is over. Northern IL never had the opportunity to snap the ball so that rule doesn't apply.
Given the above, I feel the game was ended unfairly.
Bruh on that second TD number 4 ran bruh over on that lead block😂
they tried to do that fcs trick play on 4th down, you gotta at least wait half a season for it to work.
Good to see Coastal Carolina getting its first win in program history. Haha
this game was so much fun!
I truly wish that these two champions were eligible for an expanded playoff for the national championship, and that the winner of this game could expect to go against the winner between the champions of two other mid major conferences. This is some great football, it should mean more, and more people should be watching it. Also when you really get it down to the best of the mid majors, that's going to be a team that's worthy of inclusion in a national quarterfinal and maybe after that a national semifinal.

How did you not pick coastal
I don’t care about either one of these teams, but I still like yo watch great games. However, slow it down at 1:29 and you’ll easily see the option pass was really a forward pass, and you can not have your linemen blocking downfield. CC should have never been awarded the TD. Very poor officiating on that call.
The linemen did not appear to be more than 5 yards downfield so it is legal.
That was not a catch in the end

The ref was blocking the ball from being snapped when they started rolling the clock. Fraud.
At the end it looked like they blew the whistle to start the clock early. The ump had barely set the ball down before 2 seconds had passed.
N.I. Should have had 1 more shot at the end zone
Those last 2 seconds made no sense because the referee that sets the ball down is the one who has to signal for the clock to start which he never did. I'm pretty sure that's what the QB was complaining about.
Rule 3-3-2-e-1. For each of the following reasons, the game clock is stopped on an official’s signal. If the next play begins with a snap, the game clock will start on the referee’s signal: [...] Team A is awarded a first down, either through play or by penalty.

Coastal has been an underrated ass team this year
i'll take this game over any of the playoff games this year, this is how college football is meant to be
This was such a good game. Had a blast.
I know the play didn't end up working and kudos to Coastal for being disciplined enough to stop it, but cool idea by Northern Illinois to fake drawing them offsides, the QB looking like he gave up, and then snapping it to the running back.
Somebody will buy Caldwell out if he keeps heading in this direction. He was my 3rd choice for VA Tech, right behind Marcus Freeman and Dave Clawson. Saying that, Brent Pry is a beast and will bring connections between Georgia to the Northeast
you would be shocked at the lengths coastal will go to keep chadwell, including a whole new contract if he were to want it
Went to high school with Isaiah Likely. I never met him, but I was in marching band so I'd go to all the football games, and I used to joke around with the band director about his name. "Isaiah likely to score a touchdown. Isaiah very likely to catch. Isaiah not likely to fumble." Shit like that.
Northern Illinois got screwed how is he supposed to snap the ball when the referee is literally touching one of the office of lineman
The Huskies definitely got screwed on the clock starting we before the referees blew the whistle to start it. But it's kinda hard for me to feel bad about a team that faked an injury two plays prior
