- Side by side comparison of FIMI X8SE vs FIMI X8 SE 2020 flight footage. Both are set to the same presets and can be adjusted obviously to add exposure which is often needed with the FIMI X8 SE or FIMI X8 SE 2018 if you prefer to call it that. FIMI X8 SE 2020 with ND filter will be more useful than the X8 SE 2018. FIMI X8 SE 2020 with CPL filter with some manual adjustments would have been my choice if trying to get better quality.
With each video I get closer to the full review so coming up I have the X8 SE 2020 flight in 40mph to 45mph wind gusts that made for a interesting flight. So you will see the FIMI X8 SE 2020 in high wind.
Following that will be my FIMI X8 SE 2020 range flight witch went further than I expected it to. The video after that will be my X8 SE 2020 review and why I think they made this sale booster model. Also, why some of you may not ever get one and I will talk about the same issues this X8 SE 2020 edition has that the original X8 SE has had and still has.
With mine so far there is the X8 SE 2020 gimbal problem or gimbal tilt. The FIMI X8 SE 2020 gimbal calibration offers the same calibration as the FIMI X8 SE original edition but both calibrations never stick. This is very disappointing from a camera quad.
These may just be issues I have but another issue you will see in this video is the over traveling FIMI X8 SE 2020 YAW problem, This was surprising to me and also a disappointment.
We are buying a top 2020 drone in the under $500 drone category that has these nuisances that will effect you're end result. 4k drones or 4k quadcopters delivering good quality with tilted horizons and flight control quirks isn't what we should be seeing here.

Thanks for the comparison Chris, doesn’t look like they have fixed the main issue with the gimbal and possibly created others.. so tempted to get MA2 right now but hearing there are problems with CE certification and Ads-b in Europe and the 48Mp is fake?. Is there any comparison with the Fimi and MA2 in your opinion?

I absolutely recommend the fly more. I usually tell people don’t unless you know your going to like it. You won’t go wrong with this Air 2.

Best side by side drone footage comparison I’ve ever seen. Route perfectly flown and editing perfectly synced. Please keep providing your meaningful content on non-Dji drones as there is little out there. Too many reviewers trampling each other on products like MA2. I own 3 Dji drones but still enjoy flying the less refined drones.....somehow more exciting to fly. Thanks for your content!

I am truly impressed with how you got the 2 videos to match up perfectly. Great job. I am less impressed with the fimi itself however. So just purchased the mavic air 2. We'll see how that goes.
Regarding the vignetting on the X8SE 2018: this is probably due to the lens design, and the lack of vignetting on the 2020 model might indicate either a new/better lens design (which I doubt) or a 'build-in' algorithm to correct it (which is more likely).
Pity to see the horizon tilting again and that yawing problems seems rather annoying :-\
I am very interested in seeing your views on the extent of noticeable differences between the 2 models. So far I think I only can say that the new one might have a slightly better range. Thanks
If they would of improved the camera and gimbal instead of extending range. I have the 2018, I’m going to wait a little longer to see if they truly can fix the issues

I agree. Didn't know we had a purple sky! I hoping that Fimi will take the time to correct the white balance, the tilt, and the over-yaw (that I didn't know about). At least the 2020 white balance isn't the "smurf setting" that the Fimi 2018 started out with. (I rather wish they would allow us to play with the color settings.)
Still waiting on my Fimi 2020 -- ordered April 19th.
I'm wondering if Fimi will be releasing a entirely new drone, and is using the Fimi 2020 as a place holder. Hubsan did this with the Zino Pro, and later released the Zino 2. Fimi 2020 looks like the "Pro version" of the X8 se. If so, will Fimi devote the necessary time to correct this drone's problems, or will they move on?
I see the horizon on both are off in beginning but opposite. They get better as video goes on. Great job Chris.
Chris, you nailed it again ! I find the gimbel tilt at it's worst just after take off, it seems to improve as the flight progresses !

Chris, thanks for the video. Great video comparison. Re: the #2020YawGate problem...could it be that the controller damage you reported in your unboxing video is causing this problem? Speaking strictly from a personal preference perspective hear are my observations about the camera/image quality:
I like the colors of the 2018 better (accurate or not) but parts of the image feel a bit under exposed. On the other hand the 2020 images appear to be better exposed (if not a little over exposed in some areas...the clouds) and the coloring may be a bit more accurate. I'm assuming that one could tweak the camera settings to get your desired exposure?
Overall, I'm a bit disappointed that Fimi hasn't been able to "dial-in" the capabilities of the X8...it feels a bit like 1.5 steps forward and 1 step back. I also don't understand why they went with a smaller image sensor on the 2020 version. But I guess size isn't the end all and be all when it comes to image quality..it's probably more important how you process the image and the quality of the lens...I think there is a motion/ocean joke in there somewhere? It would appear that the new 2020 camera may be the same camera used in the Fimi Palm (Osmo pocket competitor). So maybe Fimi is trying to get economies of scale sharing the same camera.
I'll be very interested to see if Fimi has made any improvements to the "Smart Flight" features (e.g., tracking/follow me, more dronies, waypoints? etc).
Fundamentally it seems like the 2020 X8 is designed primarily to improve the Gross Margins for the Fimi X8 platform. Maybe Fimi has plans to release a Fimi Pro later this year and that's where their R&D $'s are going.
From my perspective, the Fimi X8 2020 is still a very good value for the $...especially at $419.
1) It's got long battery life and nice flight characteristics (can handle higher winds). Hopefully your Yaw issues are result of damage it sustained in shipping.
2) Pretty solid camera and image (40K 30fps, high bit rate, etc)
3) Good distance range (8KM with a battery life that supports that presumably supports that distance).
4) Nice controller giving you the ability to make precise movements
It's not perfect but still a great value. IMO.
But with all that said I'll still take the Parrot Anafi over the Fimi X8 2018 or 2020 given all of it's Intelligent flight modes and given that you can pick up a refurb'ed version of the Anafi for $419 also. I'm jussayin....
Hoping you will do a deep dive into the 2020's software features. to see if anything has been added or improved.

Wow, another great video Chris. I have a 2020 model on the way. I did prefer the 2020's video. The colors looked more realistic to me, but I do hope firmware updates fix the yaw & horizon tilt issues.

This is super helpful! You did a great job offering comparable footage. It really is a give and take, but I’d say I might overall give it to the ‘18 model for being better balanced. Concerned about a good amount of red and the blown out clouds. There are certainly pros in favor of the ‘20, but overall I find the ‘18 more pleasing.
Nice job with the comparison. Horizon tilt seemed to fix itself on the way back but going out they were both off a little. The colours on both were out a little. I suspect that the true colour your eye sees was somewhere in between. The 2020 was a bit too magenta making the sky purple and the trees and grass brownish/reddish. The 2018 was just had a blue cast to everything. Overall they looked pretty good. DJI isn’t perfect either. My original Mavic Pro has to have the horizon adjusted every time I fly it. It’s a simple adjustment in the go4 app and I know I have to do it every time I fly so it just becomes part of the take off procedure.

Excellent side by side comparison, Chris. It is indeed a pity that we see old problems still existing in the 2020 model and in addition the Yaw problem, which has already been confirmed by some other users. This may nevertheless depend on the individual quads. Here is still hope they will fix the horizon problem this time, but maybe chances are slim, because it may be an inherent constructive problem. And because they didn't change any significant hardware the old flaws still persist. I guess they wanted to shell out a price competetive drone and not really a new model. I think that was the wrong move and not good for developping a good reputation in the long run. But I am still very satisfied with my X8 and you can achieve great results with it, but a new model should have been better. However, regarding the old version the camera firmware made a huge difference, which one did you have installed on your 2018 model? I wish you all the best, Chris.

and in 2020 there is a dominance of red
in my opinion both equally defective
unfortunately, without this camera defect it would be a very good drone

Thx for the comparison. I´m now happy that i don´t order the fimi (i make a cancellation a few days before your video) and order a MA2. Still waiting for it... there are to many issues with the fimi. gimbal horizon tilt, videos with yello/wobbing issues, stutter/no stable FPS and so on. Nope! Its a cheap drone, but thats all.

I'm kinda partial to the 2018 colors. Nice sync. Came close to getting the 2018, then waited for the 2020 to come out and check reviews. Decided on the Autel Evo 1. Haven't flown it much yet but from what I can tell the image quality is much better that either of those Fimi's, but then the Evo is twice as much.

Well, unfortunately my X8 SE 2020 got squished by DHL. I have sent numerous emails to Banggood about it, but they seem confused on the issue. At one point they asked me to return my treadmill. I'm like, well... I thought we were talking about a quad-copter!? This is only my second purchase from them. As part of the order, I ordered a second battery. Well, they sent me a couple of faucets! So far, all I have is a broken drone... Wish me luck, so far I don't have a lot of confidence I'll ever get a working drone. :( YMMV
The 2018 version has huge vignetting, but the colors are good. The 2020 colors are not so good, and the clouds are overexposed. So I liked 2018 video much better. But 2020 has the HDR mode - maybe it will improve the dynamic range?

I have X8 2020, and been doing some video comparisons. Have you tried the 'Vivid' setting w/4K30FPS ? I think it does a bit better job than the General setting, and even with leaving the White Balance at Auto. I'm a newbie at this. I've been trying to test various video settings to see what I like and don't like. Enjoyed the video.

Hi Chris, I had to send my X8 SE Black edition back to China for assessment. Had it delivered to them in 4 days from Ireland. They asked me to pay for all shipments and they are sending it back via ChinaPost which in my experience will take about 60 days to get it back. Awful customer service to be honest. I have DJI and Parrot drones and never had issues with them. I only have the FIMI since April 28 and it’s been a nightmare with loss of camera signal. Oh yea they said the problem was I did not complete a firmware correctly which is a bit nuts as I am very familiar with upgrade processes. Anyhow, sad to see they have issues with the 2020 as well. Don’t think they will be long in the drone market selling poor product and following that up with poor customer services.

The 2018 video isn't as smooth as the 2020 plus I think the water in the 2020 was because there was more clouds and less blue sky reflecting off the water

OK, so it's very early days, but how are you rating it against your old Zinos? I have a new Fimi on order and got myself a Zino H117S while I'm waiting. I'm being blown away by the video quality I'm getting off it and I'm finding it to be a great HQ video platform, which is what I want it for. You have a yaw problem, Parks n' Tech has a no yaw problem. I'm wondering whether to cancel my Fimi order while I still can even though the price has gone up since I ordered it.
Too early to say because both are pretty equal in strength and weaknesses. It will be compared though.
Mine came with a crazy acting gimbal and bad camera lens. Has to go back to china.You have mentioned the yaw travel after letting the stick go. I thought it is ment to be like that isn't it? i couldn't get it to stop. Love from germany...
So happy to see this review. I'm pretty sure the fimi will be my next drone i buy. I don't want two dji drones (already have the mavic mini) bc of geofencing and nfz. IDK may save up for the evo 2. I'm 100% certain it will be the fimi 2020 or the evo 2 though unless something new comes out soon.

A few shutters but not bad. I’m not holding my breath about this gimbal issue.

Nothing different from what I can see. I have many miles on my 2018 and no motor or esc issues.

Banggood keep telling me since April the 2020 X8 is out of stock do you want your money back? I was on the waiting list before Christmas before that. I now have said give me back my money. How ever some of the things that crop up with the 2020 seem to be the same as for my 2018 X8, and it occurred to me that if I down load and update my 2018 model. will I inherit the old problems again. Do you have any ideas on that?.
I left my 2018 on good firmware for a very long time and loved it. When I did my comparison video I wanted both to be judged on the latest. Big mistake because yes the problems returned like I took huge steps backwards. I don't remember what firmware I was on at the time to go back to either.
Thank God for adjustments. Visual ques are like pizza...your great pizza may not be mine. For $300, the video is awesome..without the comparison anyone here would be saying "Great Video". I am more than confident that this drone will give me exactly as I expected from it! Good Flying everyone!
Hello, I have a problem with the hubsan h117s zino, when the battery is fully charged, the quadcopter takes off and after a couple of minutes falls to the ground, and the phone shows that the battery of the quadcopter has run out. When you turn it on again, it shows full charge. What could be the reason?

Drone addiction I’m trying everything in camera settings and post production to get the clouds better but it just won’t in sunny conditions. They look awful!!!
Good thing is I can tell who’s posting videos saying they didn’t do any color grading when they actually did.

Don't loose your money on Xiaomi drones.I have Mi Drone 4K 2 years ago and i can't flight it anymore because Xiaomi stop support it at applications and phones.The 4K drone can flight only with below Android 9 system, or IOS system below 10.
Just wondering if you have solved the "the yaw travel after letting the stick go" problem I got a Xiaomi Fimi X8 SE 2020 built in March and am seeng the same yaw issue (the drone does not stop turning immediately after yaw stick is released). I am running the newest firmware...

dang, you can always color grade but the 2018 looks a little better overall to me color science wise (has that go pro blue saturation to it, especially in the skys and muddy water) but i do like the greens in the 2020 better especially the grass. I mean color grading will help either way and its personal preference but didn't see that coming.

Rick Britton, Dear Chris, can Fimi try to fix the gimbal travel in a firmware update, are is it just what it is. I thought the 2020 had a more clean camera, the sky on the 2020 was never blue, it seem more gray all the time, but for me being new I thought both Drones for the price. Will be find for what I will be using them for, Thank you Chris, as always for being honest. They can most likely fix most everything in firmware updates but that’s not always accomplished unfortunately.

Adam Karty then you were forced to keep it from landing while flying. That’s something they need to remove.
It actually calculated the amount of battery for a safe return to home, I just didn't calculate in the winds coming back. 13mph gusting to 20mph because of the tropical storm aftermath. Also, since I've got ya here, there's a button that's called Back/Down on the 5 button knob, do you know what that does? Again, thanks dude

DirtyOldDan the camera can be greatly improved and I think the gimbal should be able to but they have had this problem since the 2018 so I don’t know.
The image is too small. There should be a wider screen comparison.

It’s just enough to see the difference but if you’re using a phone that’s a problem perhaps.

2018 version does have some big untapped potential. You can see better dynamic range on 2018 version. Vinietting could be easly fixed with software.

I just can’t watch his content but I heard he mentioned my controller issue and then heard from others about the rest and saw screen shots.
They do watch me though.....out of paranoia for what I might say about them and to learn something or get their facts straight.

Bill is smart enough to know the Zino is out of his wheelhouse so he sold both of his and will bail on the X8 as soon as he does a few of the easy stuff content on it. None will be totally honest though!
QC GUY very true, I see Marcus has been learning he takes notes of firmware versions now 😂🤣👍🏻 but if you are mentioned by Ron or Others in Zino nation or Bills chat and he is on screen I love seeing his stoney faced expression and just does not participate in the conversation.. I don’t really watch them too much just flick through the videos as they are all up each other’s asses it seems too scripted sometimes too not just a flowing conversation of mates having a chat about the hobby..

You say he takes notes and that’s funny because since I started busting his balls for doing firmware update videos while not remembering the firmware version or what is in the update that he now reads off a sheet of bullet points. You will notice his eye 👁 is always looking down or just off the camera. Not as noticeable as Bill looking into the other room when he reads his. 😂

Same question here. I would like to see the difference between 'Video' mode and 'HDR' mode. Early videos on the 2020 edition seemed to show considerably more noise in 'HDR' mode.
I will do a hdr video but didn’t use it in the comparison.

In my opinion 2018 has a better sensor, it has more details in the water when you were returning. Also 2020 suffers from a strange magenta hue in the sky.
Seems you're flying with the 1020A firmware on the 2018.
If you'd downgrade the firmware to 1018b you'd realised that 2018 has a better camera.

I have used all the camera firmware and agree but to compare it most fare to be on the latest updates for both like the average user.

Ben Portman I can too in post....who’s moaning? It’s software that has been there from the 2018 and it fixes jack shit. Speaking from my own experiences with both X8 versions so maybe he has the magic fairy dust or something.
Went back through history and it was Gary Purcell fimi 2020 first flight and horizon set up. Seems he went to system files gimbal advanced setting and set it up square to the edge of a table with a level on it and used one of the grid lines on the camera footage to level the gimbal. If you Google Gary Purcell I'm sure you'll find and share.
Ben Portman I did the exact video on my channel over a year ago with the 2018. It worked till it didn’t is all I can say.
I have done it on my 2020 as well before and in between flights. It doesn’t stick at least on mine and so many others. Looks great to make a video showing it works but I can’t do that because I only trust go by my own experiences.
I can and have made it dead straight in post production though.
Only have 2018, and have had no gimbal issues. Look forward to your review of 2020
Ben Portman I believe you and there are obviously many that don’t have it with the 2020. This is the same for other makes/models as well. Take the fabulous “lol” Zino’s as an example. No problems with mine till the Z2 but repeated same common problems for others. You’re lucky because the tilted horizon sucks! 👍
2018 is better .. I imagine the regret of those who sold their 2018 to buy 2020 kkkkk

Although both X8’s are turds, they’re infinitely better then that Zino 2 turd that I bought. Glad I canceled the preorder on the 2020.
