    Does Illustrator allow you to repeat a shape on a path other than a circle???? I have wanted to repeat a shape on a freeform path or even a rectangle... can it be done??? I haven't seen any tuts that can show this... (I want to create a rope frame, or a chain frame, not as a circle but like a rounded-corner rectangle)

    • @GDHT

      Yes, although corners sometimes cause issues. First, make a pattern brush, and then apply it to your rectangle.

    I like the Alt-drag method to replace a pattern brush object (The Mac keyboard hasn't had an Option key on it for years now, so don't really understand why people - including Adobe - still use the term for Mac instructions when 'Alt' is more platform agnostic). It's not the 'V-key', it's the 'Selection Tool'. Personally, I don't like this amount keyboard shortcut references in tutorials. because it helps people to know the correct names of the Tools they need to use. A simple way to create a triangl is to use the Polygon Tool set to three sides.

    • @GDHT
      @GDHT  6 лет назад

      Huh, my Mac has an option key (Macbook Pro), but I get your point with referring to it as Alt to be more cross-platform. I might try that! As far as using shortcut keys, the reason I do that is so people can learn the shortcuts and get faster, but maybe I'll just start using both...it just gets a bit wordy to say all that. Thank you for your feedback!!

    Another amazing tutorial! I must say I love that you use the keyboard shortcuts. I am all about efficiency and being fast. so thanks! I was unaware of many of the ones you mention. Related to this tutorial, is there a way to save the shapes for all the files? For some reason these pattern brushes are not saved...

    • @GDHT
      @GDHT  6 лет назад

      Hi, thank you so much!! I think the pattern brush will save with the file if it's still live in the document. If you expand the brush, It won't stay in the document. If you want to save all the brushes as a brush file, you can click the flyout on the Brushes panel, and choose Save Brush Library. Then open a new document and do the same, but choose Load Brush Library. I hope this helps!

    • @GDHT
      @GDHT  6 лет назад +1

      Hi Caleb, I searched for an answer to this, and I don't think Illustrator has that capability. It would be kind of cool to be able to do a 'baseline shift' with objects, but it doesn't seem possible. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    but how to repeat any object (complete with gradients inside) along a custom path? That's the question.

    • @GDHT
      @GDHT  4 года назад +2

      Since you can't use gradients on a pattern brush, make the repeated shape path first, then expand it. Once you do that, it's not linked to the pattern brush anymore, and you can add gradients to it.

  • @shisam3287
    @shisam3287 3 года назад

    Is there a way you release the path to get a vector for each single shape?

    • @GDHT
      @GDHT  3 года назад +1

      Yes, you can expand it. But I would make a copy of the unexpended version first, because you may want to go back and change it, and once you expand, you can’t go back.
