- Hurricane Marie brought an unusual summer swell to Southern California, August of 2014. It was an early morning filled with barrels, brutal falls, and hoots and hollers. The wave of the day that Gabe Venturelli tamed is definitely one to remember.

Wow, venturelli's ride... It looks like he took off behind the breakwall, got set up going fast, and then got about 30 feet behind where the lip was hitting, but the wave was so hollow that he was still able to come from behind without getting hit. Then he gets pitted three times and travels over three hundred yards. I consider myself an advanced tuberider, and I've seen many growing up in Hawaii, but this has got to be one of the most impossibly deepest tuberides I've ever seen. For the first hundred yards it looks like his board was actually surfing below sea level, and the lip was bouncing out towards shore instead of back up into the tube and disturbing the face, so he was able to ride so much deeper. And then hurricane Marie was an abnormally powerful swell, almost angry hidden super power, which made those barrels pitch so hard that most of the guys couldn't even take off without getting hurled into space. Way to go Mr Venturelli.

Love Sand Spit! Even the inside are little drainers, if you get one good wave the whole day you’re stoked forever. I’m still stoked on one I got in 98-99
That was freeking hilarious. I used to go there, occasionally back in the late 60s into the mid 70s from the end of the long board to the short board transition. It has always been a hard wave to ride, the drop in was always the trickiest no room for error, get in and get going or get swallowed up. It hasn't changed! The wave isn't as dangerous as the crowd's that gather. Agreed, the last wave was as Ben .J said. Thanks, Tony.
That last ride was SICK - wow !
My one surf spot regret......... I surfed nearly everything from the Ranch in the 1980's down to Mexico not long ago.... and it still hurts watching this from Oregon now lol

Every time I see this video I think about my buddies at commercial fish up north there at Santa Barbara in a couple of times I actually caught this place on fire this video in particular, California soul for sure, California is overrun hold your ground protect what's yours over and out
