    Extremely helpful video, I did it myself and had one friend to press the brakes all the time so I won't need that toolkit to lock the engine ;)

    ive screwed myself aswell with the crank.. since my Autodata programm told me it HAD a key on the crank. i messed it up. i didnt have the special tools for it. so i had a piece of 5mm thick STRAIGHT steel, so i modified it to fit the cams, i also took a bolt 8m, 70mm long for the crank. i did the samething, position the crank till TDC cyl 1, and turned it clockwise against the bolt. NOW WATCH OUT, the pin can also lock into place when its at BDC, so always use a screwdriver like the man said when u also messed this up! now what i didnt know was that the slots in the camshaft are off center, so thanks for that Steve!! i will finish it today

      No.. where do you put the screwdriver in it?

    • @SteveSims
      @SteveSims  6 лет назад

      if you look at the video @4:55 it is pushed into the flywheel teeth through a small opening that is already in the engine. It is at the back of the engine (side towards the body not the radiator). If you get a good torch and shine it in its easy to find.

    Hello, I would like to ask for your help on something. I would like to get information about the camshaft locking position during timing belt replacement on Renault K4M engines.

  • @Mixbag
    @Mixbag 4 года назад

    The camshaft locking tool used to lock the left side sprockets is only used to undo the bolts to remove sprocket and vvt?

    • @SteveSims
      @SteveSims  4 года назад

      Maybe, it didn't seem to do much as the cams are locked at the other end with the c shaped bit. It just kept the dephaser pully in place. I checked on ebay and just that bit had the description as "This bracket is used to hold the camshaft sprocket whilst releasing the centre bolts"

    • @Mixbag
      @Mixbag 4 года назад +1

      I have the cams locked with the tool. Gearbox side. And locking pin is in but i cant seem to get the vvt sprocket locking tool in. Exhaust sprocket is ok but vvt sprocket is 1mm out so i cant fully get the tool in the hole on the vvt. Does this mean i havent locked engine timing right? If i get locking tool in gearbox side on cams does that mean its locked correctly of can it still lock but out of timing.

    • @SteveSims
      @SteveSims  4 года назад

      @@Mixbag if the groove at the end of the cams is at the bottom 2:43 then I would say the cams are correct. Try putting something long in number 1 spark plug hole to see if it is at TDC. The sprocket tool is just something to keep the sprockets from moving when tightening the bolts. Maybe yours was slightly out from a previous job done sometime.

    • @Mixbag
      @Mixbag 4 года назад

      Iv replaced both camshaft seals. Turned engine over by hand on crank bolt. It did not lock up and i managed to install locking tools again. So i should be safe to start engine now? I have noticed i have slightly bent the horse shoe locking tool! Probably from torquing cam sprockets up! Do you think its still safe to start? I turned crank till it hit the crank locking pin. The had to slightly go anticlockwide just a tiny bit to get the horse shoe locking tool to go in. Groves are below the line.

    • @SteveSims
      @SteveSims  4 года назад

      @@Mixbag I bent mine too. if you can turn the engine over a few times by the crank bolt and it doesnt get stuck then it might be ok. What you dont want is valves hitting the piston but if it turns by hand then that is ok.

    Thanks for this useful video, in some ways its good that you messed up because its extra information for us. You should have recorded the whole thing and made a separate video about resetting the timing. That would have been useful too. I just ordered my kit so this is really handy information.

    • @SteveSims
      @SteveSims  8 лет назад

      Thanks. Just make sure you have the correct tools and lock the timing before removing the pulley off the bottom crank.
      When this video series is complete I will make a video talking through the procedure correctly.
      You can download the instructions I used here:
      drive.google.com/open?id=0B_2dEBsLP7bUenl6N01nSmgxT1U
      Section 11A is what you need , dephaser pulley, timing belt and auxiliary belt.
      If you mess up the timing then the section on refitting the timing belt tells you how to restore the timing.
      Any questions then feel free to ask.

    hi stave! does renault 1.6 16v engine have the same timing with 1.4 16v renault modus? because i have the same problem just as yours. i messed also my timing when i removed the belt without proper locking tools. So really need some help just like the way you did. I need to realign my crack and cams back on right timing,. Hope you could help me. Thanks a lot! By the way your video gives me hope with my engine.

    • @SteveSims

      what I did was put a screwdriver in the hole where number 1 spark plug is and slowly turn the crank until it was at its highest point, I had to rotate the cams sometimes to clear the valves from hitting the pistons. When I had the crank done I rotated the cams to their positions. I dont know if the timing is the same but I do have a link to download the guide for each type of engine.

    thanks for the link. If you do a full video, please can you leave the bits in where you actually remove/replace things, dephaser etc. I'm assuming that you captured all this, I don't want you to film the whole operation again😁

    • @SteveSims
      @SteveSims  8 лет назад

      I didn't film removing the parts because I did get on a downer that I messed up the timing and I removed the pulley and timing belt and refitted the dephaser pulley when I was down.
      The pulley does just unbolt ( 1 bolt through the center) and to remove the timing belt you loosen the tension roller and pull off the belt.
      I wont film it all again I will film me explaining the process and pointing to the parts on the engine.

  • @NeilLavin
    @NeilLavin 8 лет назад

    Halfway through this now, the 5 minute videos on youtube don't do this job justice. I think my timing is slightly out to start with.
    My locking kit was a dog to fit, slightly to large and very soft metal. I had to hammer it in. The lock on the crank side was also hard work.
    I will have to check everything again :-(
    All the covers are also hard work to remove, doesn't help when right from the off I had a rounded bolt on the under carriage tray.

    • @SteveSims
      @SteveSims  8 лет назад

      Well take your time and dont rush, I had to crowbar out my blanking plugs and my locking tool bent and I had to hammer it flat again but I bent it when using it to turn the dephaser camshaft to reset the timing.
