  • After a night of tearing the roof off the town with the fellows, jovial collegiate Jack (William Duncan) finds himself buttling to avoid a stay in jail-- Inadvertently following his father's advice to cut out the partying and find a side job. While dutifully serving, he bumps into his girlfriend (Corrine Griffith) who he'd ducked out on earlier.
Vitagraph Studios produced one-reelers more sophisticated than the average programmer / potboiler of the day, and indeed "Cost" is just that: A good example of well-made, if unremarkable, Vitagraph fare. But it's also a film produced during a time of transitions for Vitagraph. That is, transitions away from comedies starring their two signature teams (Vitagraph's most popular star, John Bunny of the "Bunny-Finches" passed away in 1915) and a transition toward supplying more serious "features" to movie palaces, rather than shorts to nickelodeons.

There's a pretty terrible frame jitter / roll that begins at 6:17 and ends at 6:36. This was present in all three scans I've made of this Super 8 print. Could be that the sprocket holes are slightly larger in those 400 or so frames. Hopefully this doesn't distract you too much from this otherwise entertaining 1916 comedy.
