Screwing those in is pretty slick .. the plastic sure does love to fly! Something to consider, if you need to build another tunnel in the future: Substitute 1 " pvc segments for rebar, screwed into the bed frame. The rebar costs me $1.08 a piece from my local, but the pvc only costs $2.99 for a 10' piece (10x 6" pieces of pvc =$2.99, 10xno-plate rebar = $10.80. $7.79 buys a fair bit of carrot seed :)). The missus bought a whole mess of clamps to secure our shade cloth and covers, which keeps the plastic from getting holes in it from nails or screws, but those cost money! A strip of duct tape laid down through the spot where the screws go should reinforce that cover, and stop it from tearing, if that is ever a concern.
I grew some 4 years ago that the stalks got up to 24 inches or taller . That hoop house, self waters all the time. Great easy system to grow " start most plants. Good video. Keep up the good work.
I m the same as Sunkiss homesteads comment- I only put them over plants or beds to protect from bug damage & shade cloth from our extreme heat In Aussie- my last bed of carrots were just amazing I have never seen carrots as healthy & large as they were. I do the row covers to keep insects off my plants but some plants seem to love being covered. I had some carrots that grew 19 inches good and sweet. I also leave my stricture up during the summer and put a shade cloth on it
Good morning Danny and Wanda. Praise God for blessing you so! Looking fwd to seeing the end results of your work and ingenuity. I have two other suggestions that I've done here : low desert of S. Calif zone 8b to 9b. 1) You can put a high tunnel on those bean trellis. I leave a gap up top on either side of fence about an inch or so. Just need another row of Ts. That way, you can warm soil up early and get beans going sooner, if that would help in your neck of the woods. I modify mine also to have the ends open, so I'm guessing sometimes our weather is similar enough. 2) In the Summer, replace row cover with black bird netting. It cools it off a bit under it. I was a bit surprised at the results myself. I'd put it up to keep my hens out, only to discover that when I worked the raised bed, the air under the netting felt cooler, even in the hottest part of Summer. So, I wait till I see them marked down and snatch them up.... or move them from the fruit trees to the raised beds once the fruit is harvested. 3) When you have the hoops off, place a tennis ball or cork over the top of the open rebar. If you fall in your old age, a fall on one of those can do a lot more damage and add insult to injury. Myself, I've chose to pound the stakes to level with the raised bed instead, and then have longer pvc pipe (pvc pipe is a lot cheaper here than the stuff you used). You have a good looking fixture.. My space for our carrots are two feet wide and 15 feet long.. just really small.. I got hula hoops, during the holidays. I've great success with them in the past. Yes, this is the year of the carrots. My cabbage is also, looking good. I tried to stake the row cover down... Bad mistake, it ripped it off to shreds in places. We finally got some wood chunks from my brother.. I think, my danvers, will be replaced with these.. I'm just waiting to see the bottoms. Thank you for sharing.
As always Danny you have given me some great plans for building some raised beds for special plantings and bug protection, using your "tincker toy" construction components. Just in time to get the materials and set aside for building later in the year. This was first year I used Cold cover cloth and steel hoop supports for veg. Side by side comparison was outstanding. I bought all the cloth and hoops I could afford and have set it aside for more intensive gardening as the GRAND progresses. Thank you, all it takes is someone with a need and imagination to solve a problem that can then help hundreds. Blesses my soul to see you two helpmates working together in unison.

when you take off the hoops later get some mushroom caps to go on the tops of the rebar to keep from impailing yourself on the rebar if you slip trip or fall. Ive seen it happen, not pretty
To true. I use small bamboo rods sometimes to prop up plants. I have to be ever mindful when I bend over to pick or weed. I decided next year not to use them. It's just a matter of time before I don't see one and get it in the eye. Shudder 😮
Danny I do the same type method but by the roll (100') of black 1" polyhose made for water and arch as you do and leave perm as my 3/8 rebar done exactly as you have done but the poly is much more sturdy. Then to keep from drooping between hoops add one long piece of polyhose across the top and tie on with baling twine... very simple method and can drape heavy plastic like mini greenhouses and lift one side or both anytime. Just cut with nifty hosecutters.... love it... thanks for all you show and tell. Look forward to each and every moment with you from n.w. Arkansas......... blessings
I just did one long pvc pipe, the length of the bed, 2x2x4 wooden stakes with v cut in top end, enough to support pvc, then drape cover like a tent. Total cost, about $1 per foot for the length of bed.

I'm on 3/4 of an acre with a 40 x 40 garden, a house, 2 separate garages, a wood storage area (stores about 8 cords of wood), a "mini barn" for feed storage and milking room, 3 doe, 1 buck 1 weather goats, 6 ducks, 24 chickens, oh, and a 24 x 24' pool for the grandkids. As you can imagine we are crammed in here as tight as we can be. Because of septic, electric, and gas lines, pens, and buildings, I can't move my garden. I was just curious if the floating cover would block enough of the scorching rays, but because of the trouble we have with humidity (I know you're well versed in that issue) I want to make sure I have max. air flow and it would keep the rain from splashing the plants and minimize the disease issues we are prone to in our area. If you were in my shoes, and knowing what's coming, what would you advise? Thanks again Danny. Watched your "Time to Say Thanks" video yesterday. It bout brought me to tears. If there were only some way to pay you back for all you and Miss Wanda do for us I would be the first in line. I saw James Prigioni screwed in pvc caps along the sides of the raised bed, then bent pvc pipe into the caps on each side. Might be safer in the long run than rebars sticking out of the ground? I cap everything here because I am so paranoid about someone or an animal getting in there and accidentally tripping and getting impaled on something like that, or t-posts.

Well I had 1 box with seedlings you could barely see and enough plastic to staple to the four corner boards sticking up! With the wind yesterday, it was torn off! All I could do before dark was to gather a bunch of dry leaves to throw into the box! So aggravating trying to set up two separate gardens with limited funds and no help at all😕

I never thought to use pex pipe and after watching your video today I saw pex pipe in 100 ft rolls advertised in our local hardware store flyer. I'll be going tomorrow to get 2 rolls that should do most of my raised beds. I already have loads of shade cloth, greenhouse plastic on a roll, insect netting and 1 ft pieces of rebar from another project. Pests and weather are getting just too unpredictable to not protect my crops anymore. My blueberry cages are more solid with 1/2" conduit pipes fitted square.
I grow on my apartment balcony and I planted a tub with 6 carrots and 6 daikon radish in September and I just harvested the first daikon a few days ago. it was about 8 inches long and quite thick, but my poor little carrots are only a couple of inches tall and have no roots yet. I think the daikon just overtook them. LOL

@@DeepSouthHomestead Pex pipe is not UV tolerent and breaks down rather quickly when exposed to sunlight, as soon as 30 days and the row cover fabric will probably not give alot of protection from UV light. Danny just a heads up I know you’re smart enough to do this but someone else might not be when you take the pics off of the rebar you need to put something on the rebar in case someone falls on it I know that when you walk through the garden as you get older it’s easy to stumble trust me I know what I’m talking about there I believe they make those rebar tops or whatever they call them and sell them at the big box storeBecause they are required by OSHA

They also need depth! We didn't have a deep garden bed on our patio and they grew in an L shape this year

I believe your looking for shade cloth which I've only seen in black, white may also do the same job but haven't seen anyone use it for that purpose.
Yes the sun is scalding plants now. We place ours where they get only half a day of sun now.

The pex is more flexible and fits the rebar perfect. We will take it up as soon as it warms up.

We have to use pressure treated or it will rot in our humidity.

Yes we take the cover off when it's warm.

This is pex that is used to run water in houses. You can get it at any hardware store.
