I like how in undead nightmare people in the story don't take the zombie apocalypse seriously because they don't know what it is so they refer to them as undead, but on the flip side of things it makes the gameplay unnatural and scary i remember the first time getting over cornered by zombies because the way they groan seem like they're some of kind of strange being rather than have humans groan in the background it always terrified me, the mythical creatures was the best thing about the game.

The real reason is that it's the last time Rockstar made a DLC for their single-player game. It's also just a general masterclass on how to do DLC right. Everything from the price to the design and story is done so well. It's something you could've easily taken for granted back then, but in the modern day, that type of thing is a real rarity. In a world where seemingly every game has a battle pass or some type of in-game microtransaction, it's a real palette cleanser to see a game with actually good singleplayer DLC.

I get that you are biased against zombies, but this DLC was not just some outlandish and absurd story. While there are aspects to it that don't elaborate on what is happening down to the specifics, it is definitely not, only ironic or "wacky" or whatever else you are saying to subtly slight it to be not as much of a masterpiece as it actually was.

I dont think zombies is something that will ever get truly "tired" as a trope. Its its own sub genre its like saying horror itself is tired which is just ridiculous. Sure certain individual people might get tired of it, but as a whole there will always be a place for these stories just like there will always be a place for any other genre. If you are someone who actually enjoys zombies theres nothing tired about it you just constantly patiently wait for the next great zombie experience wether its a movie or game.

So, i basically agreed with everything you said, just one nitpick. The hauntingly narrated intro gives the false impression that the expansion would be more serious-horror oriented opposed to parody, as well as the general atmosphere up until Uncle is fully revealed, then immediately killed. Also the fact they respected historical accuracy enough to the degree that the word “Zombie” is never said in dialogue, only “Undead”. Kinda wished you talked about the actual plot also, instead of disregarding it as simply a parody plot that exist for the sake of a parody plot. Like i’m not arguing with you that it’s a fucking nightmare in John’s head, he literally has lines essentially breaking the 4th wall saying things like “This has to be a nightmare!”. I’m just saying, the expansion *does* have a theme that is not just parodying, it’s also a projection of John’s subconscious. The girl “Ayauhtéotl” at the end of the game tells John “These are your demons, John.” after he asked her “Why aren’t they attacking you??” You see, Jack’s whole story, although mostly muted by a beautiful piano solo, it’s almost *certainly* a plot about a father who comes back from an errand, when his family is attacked and infected with a cannibalistic disease, he ties them up and takes off to find help, but “Since there’s no cure, the brave man has to kill everybody” Which is all caused by the conflict between Aztec Sun and Moon worshippers, which all really translates to the consequences of the Mexican Civil War that occurred earlier, leaving Reyes in Escalera to find the Aztec mask, and become patient zero of the Undead outbreak. Can’t believe that all went over your head, also you didn’t acknowledge my favorite part of UN, in the cutscene where John puts hogtied Abigail on the bed, if you look closely, she actually tries taking a bite directly out of his crotch area.

Instead of Undead Nightmare 2 it would have been cool to become a paranormal detective in RDR2. Essentially taking the hunting and combat mechanics to the next level. Crafting silver bullets for werewolves, throwing garlic at vampires, random shit like that. Having to track these monsters down, fight them, take their parts to use to hunt other monsters.
It’s a big ask for a modding community without developer support, and Rockstar will likely never touch RDR2 again, but the idea of a wacky expansion is still appealing. We can always dream.

I like that people are suddenly making a bunch of content on RDR1, I’ve been tired of RDR2 having the limelight (even though I love it), because, and I know this is a controversial opinion, I prefer John over Arthur. John in RDR1 has so many witty remarks that make him such an enjoyable character. Also, that first scene with Ross is just pure gold.

We goofed around in the open world for weeks before we were like “wait… there’s missions?” 😂 I still deeply regret not also buying the base game but I was young and broke at the time and had no idea what I was missing with the story.

Man, if Undead Nightmare came to RDR2 I'd picture it like this...
We'd open the game the same way, save John, and upon the first Colm mission, he'd say there's a plague that had seized the world and drove them to hide in the mountains. Seen as a yarn to avoid dying, Dutch shoots Colm and gets his revenge early. We learn about the plan to rob Cornwall's train and attempt to rob it, the dynamite still fails, but upon jumping the train we discover it's filled with undead guards. Seeing this, we return to Colter and warn the rest that something is going on.
Arthur and Charles agree to head into the nearest town to confirm the crazy stories, and find the dead running amuck. Upon escaping the hairy situation, we return to Colter to see that Pinkerton undead had wandered into the abandoned town, causing everyone to flee into the storm. We find John, Abigail, and Jack together and held up in one of the cabins being protected by Sadie. John couldn't be moved in time, and refusing to abandon him, his family is there while the rest cut off.
A plan is formed to move out west, further from densely populated civilization, but the world has only gotten crazier. Arthur is now the lead in this zombie world and we must now navigate the land of the undead with our crew to keep safe.

It is neat that R* put Undead Nightmare Easters eggs in RDR2, for example with Micah's horse. That something those who remembered the elements of the dlc would spot and what it represented.
Also the Sasquatch mission was hilarious,, after GTA SA and the infamous big foot theory, R* brings it into Undead Nightmare has players possibly exterminate the species. 😂 They must have had it with the big foot theories.

I entirely disagree with your views on zombies. For me zombies are the only classic monsters I'm still afraid of as an adult. In concept anyway. Although I will say that the way Undead Nightmare uses them goes against why I find them scary.
The way I see it, the fear of zombies stems from three concepts. Natural, primal, and spiritual. The natural concept is pretty obvious. The idea that death has no more meaning and a corpse can rise from the grave is inherently unnerving. It is as far as I can tell the loudest example of an affront to humanity's concept of natural.
And looking at it through the primal lens, the zombie can be seen as a metaphor for man's greatest fear. The fear of death itself. There's no person left in a zombie. It's just a body. It's a walking embodiment of the concept of death with only one purpose. To consume life as a means only to end it. We eat to stay alive. Therefore, the only reason a zombie would have to eat is to destroy life.
And now spiritually. Though the zombie is no longer human with no shred of what made them a person, they still resemble one. And the fact that they move and walk the way a living person does, and by that I mean the sheer fact that they do it and not the manner or style in which they do it, blends the concept of life with death. A lot of people have become desensitized to the scene that occurs in so many zombie movies where someone one of their loved ones come back as a zombie but try to imagine what that would be like.
Imagine seeing the visage of someone you cared about upright and moving and acknowledging your presence but with no spark of life. No element that made them the person you knew. A cruel and perverse mockery of who they were. And even if you encountered the zombie of someone you didn't know, your basic human empathy would approximate what it would be like. Just without the personal agony.
And all of that is why zombie hordes don't scare me very much. When you have a massive amount of zombies, all of these elements get lost, and they could be any monster. A single zombie in a cramped room or hallway will always be substantially more scary to me than a hundred of them running down the street screaming. And although I don't find the zombies in Undead Nightmare to be that scary because of this, the game is still a lot of fun, and I love it. As a matter of fact, it's my favorite Red Dead Redemption experience primarily because it was my first Red Dead Redemption experience.
3:33 I'm a big fan of the idea of to each his own, but I don't think I'm very fond of the way you're expressing this. It's fine if you view things this way, but don't take it as a given. Funny and scary our subjective measurements and shouldn't be described objectively. Zombies are not funny. You find them funny. Zombies are not unscary. You find them unscary.
And zombies aren't necessarily metaphors for the monsters inside humanity. I'm sure they have been used as a metaphor for that before, but that doesn't mean every example of zombies in media are a metaphor for that. Those ideas didn't even factor into my explanations of why I found zombies scary. This is eerily similar to when Joseph Anderson said that Soma isn't a horror game because he wasn't scared by it. Please don't pull a Joseph Anderson.

Overall undead nightmare is a A tier dlc that is good for a bit of fun and i will say i love playing the game with my dad because its more accessable to someone like him who can only play for a hour at a time. No complex story or progression, just get out there and shoot stuff sorta game.
