When all I shot was Russian steel ammo last year and the price of brass was 50% higher there’s no way this won’t cause a price increase across the board…even if the effect isn’t directly felt right now.

Brendon, hello from Russia !!! As an ordinary resident of the Russian hinterland, I watch with great regret how relations between Russia and the United States are being destroyed. And I am extremely saddened by this. And this is what I want to say. The Russian arms industry is in great danger, because the US sanctions are imposed on the arms restrictions imposed by the Russian government (tightening of the procedure for obtaining weapons, their circulation, storage, and the introduction of a number of prohibitions) and this will lead to a reduction in the market of cartridges and weapons in Russia, and together with the ban on the import of cartridges into the United States will most likely bury the manufacturers of cartridges in Russia. And the surviving manufacturers will raise the prices of cartridges so much that a box of 7.62x39 cartridges will cost as much as an apartment in Los Angeles. And it all looks like some cunning plan.

I looked in to making everything from scratch in my personal shop and it really opened my eyes to why the ammo situation is what it is, especially in regards to primers.
I work at a nuclear plant and I know a lot of good machinists as well as some pretty damn good engineers. There are some materials science challenges, but comparatively, they are not too difficult to solve. Getting good dies and tooling made would be very easy for me and fabricating a tank to plate bullets and precisely control the temperature of the solution is something I probably will still do because it is useful for other things like anodizing as well. The real hiccup is non-corrosive primer manufacturing.
Primers are the hardest part. Mixing the compounds for the primers can be a very hazardous job and one way you have to mitigate risk is to not have a lot of the compounds in the same room at a time. You also have to do it in a blast resistant area in case something does go wrong. Therefore making non-corrosive primers can only be done safely in relatively small batches. The batches are usually mixed wet and then have to dry before you package them or send them down the line to continue manufacturing cartridges. Manufacturers may have some clever solutions to speed up the process, but to me it looks like each primer compound mixing area can only produce a small quantity at a time and the area will be unavailable for further production until the compounds dry. This means if you want to increase primer production, you have to build more blast resistant rooms/areas for the process to be done safely, which I would guess makes these areas the least productive square footage in an ammo factory.
It makes sense to me that primers are the only reloading item I am not really seeing coming back in stock. I also would not blame Brandon or anybody else who knows what is involved in making primers for not wanting to manufacture them. I still am curious about being able to make them in case shit hits the fan. It is probably something I will get tooling for and maybe do once, sometime not in the near future, under close supervision and guidance from the people I know with way more chemistry knowledge and lab experience than I have. Otherwise, I am more than happy to not have anything to do with that process when stocks come back to shelves.

Exactly what ibhave been saying to everyone who says, "It's only for 12 months!" or, "The next administration can just lift the sanctions!"
No, the way the statute is written, *once the sanctions are imposed* , the requirements to lift them are *nondiscretionary* and *require* that the targeted nation take *specific and objective actions* . There is no mechanism in the statute to allow the President (whether the one who imposed the sanctions or a later one) to just "undo" the sanctions, absent 100% compliance by the targeted nation with the demands laid out in the statute.
This law was written to enforce the 1991 Gulf War ceasefire provisions on Iraq, only Congress didn't want to limit the potential application to only Iraq, in case a similar issue popped up with another nation such as Syria or Iran. Ultimatums that could be imposed on a small, weak country (who only has a limited number of sites that would be subject to inspection, and no credible capability to repel a forced compliance inspection backed with the threat of troops) simply cannot be imposed on a major power such as Russia.
And, even though I think the Russian government certainly qualifies as a government hostile to freedom and Western interests, and (understandably) sees itself as a peer competitor with the US specifically, I *also* understand that Russia *cannot permit* the level of interference with their actual national security that the sanctions compliance enforcement of this statute require. They'd literally have to permit the US to freely inspect pretty much every single chemical or munitions factory and every single place munitions could be stored (whether a secret facility or not). *Not going to happen* .

@@dorzak975 the President *cannot* change statutory language via Executive Order. And once a President declares these sanctions in effect, it is *statute* , not *executive decision* , that states when they can be lifted - *Russia* is required to "prove their innocence" before the law allows the sanctions to be lifted. POTUS *cannot* just issue an executive order that says, "Well, despite the *law* saying certain conditions have to be met to end these sanctions, I've decided just to ignore the law and declare Russia doesn't have to meet those statutory requirements."
It wasn't legal.or Constitutional when Obama did it with Iran, and it wouldn't be any more Constitutional or legal for a future President to do it with regar to Russia.
What *could* ( and *should* ) be done is for Congress to amend the law to require that sanctions *must* have a tangible and credible nexus to the entity wee trying to pressure, *amd* provide an option to challenge specific sanctions as failing that test (either categorically or "as applied") .
That would both provide a President an easy (and Constituiomal and legal) method to terminate inappropriate sanctions, and give US entities a viable pathway to challenge them even against a hostile Administration.
Congress could go even farther and allow the President to certify to Congress that the sanctions are no longer appropriate, *even if* the sanctioned entity failed to do *anything* the statute requires - that would return some flexibility in foreign affairs for the President to engage in some logrolling Realpolitik - say, lifting sanctions in exchange for something really valuable, such as bilateral pressure on an even *worse* actor, or some, more widely reaching, human rights issue). (Note this last option *would* have made Obama's midnight cash deal with Iran entirely legal had it applied to those sanctions at that time. Such is the nature of legislation - never give *your* guy a tool you are afraid the other side could use against *your* interests when *they're* in power.)

@@geodkyt while you may be technically correct, all one has to do is look at the border situation to realize President's do have the ability to simply "not enforce" some laws, not saying it's right but they can simply ignore it. Anybody right of Lenin trying it will be crucified for it though.

There's people that definitely believe manufacturing ammo follows Fallout 4 logic where you just toss in some steel bars, hunks of lead and piles of fertiliser for a propellant into a machine, and proof, pristine bullets come out.
