I love the term "Military grade" as a sign of quality, when in reality most actual military equipment is from the cheapest bidder that can get the job done.
I agree, but Hi-Point doesn’t have any military contracts (that I know of and hope not lol) but that term is used very loosely. In my mind, if they say that, that’s everything but like .22 lol. I love our gun laws. Think they’re enforced great and make me proud to be an American
Steyr AUG's are insanely well made workhorses. Many original run AUG's are still in service. Ton of modular options, even field-changeable to other modes. Great piece of gear.
Defend that 2A with your life my Yank friends, it's so much bigger than just firearms. First they'll take the guns, then they'll take your freedom. Over here we can't carry anything to defend ourselves, we can't properly defend ourselves in our home, we can't even speak freely on the internet ffs. The US is really is the home of freedom.
So... For the AK50 to be a viable AK doesn't that mean it would also have to be soaked in water, left in below freezing temperatures overnight, and still cycle?🤔
Glad you showed appreciation to us Brits who respect your 2nd amendment. The UK people who say it should be scrapped are the same ppl who'd say we can't interfere in other countries business
I'm pro gun but I'm not pro going into other countries... do you think Iraq was time well spent, what about Afghanistan... maybe it's for the best YOU don't have guns
@@chrismario6371 just to clarify, when I say interfere in other countries business, I'm referring to people who try to tell Americans they should ban guns, basically tell them what's laws they should and shouldn't have. I'm not talking about interventions
Fun fact about KS-23: It's got rubber slug option. However, it snaps ribs like a twig at 80 metres for anyone wearing less than class 3 protective vest, so it's more of a novelty item.
The thing with the ice test, as someone who lives in Northern MN and regularly hunts in sub zero temps the surprise was not that most weapons failed, the surprise was that anything worked at all. It's also a nearly irrelevant test, which to anyone who actually listens to the words in the video before ragging on the internet was more or less stated by him in the video.
as much as heat can screw things up nothing stops things dead in its tracks like ice cold i mean it blows my mind that a computer can get to cold to function i mean its way down there considering we use liquid helium to cool over clocked rigs but still ice can lock up a pc at a point even with 0 moving parts now.
I live in southern MN, what town are you in? Also yeah my ARs work just fine in this weather if it doesn't get soaked in water? I can't think of a real life situation where the garand thumb thing would happen?
The first test is somewhat reasonable. Getting some snow on your gun, letting it melt and then leaving the gun in the cold for a bit is a realistic scenario.
Personally I don't see the use in arguing for a weapon that nobody can find to guy! So even though I much prefer AK47's, since you can't seem to find one for love nor money it's gonna be the AR15's day.
Funny, when Kalashnikov did this test themselves a couple years ago and came up with the exact same results, everyone said it was rigged in favor of their own guns. Now, it seems they were actually trying to test the gun because knowing the limits of your own gun is useful when designing future weapons
It'd be nice to know precisely how the failures occured and how it could be corrected. If it were just water freezing around the hammer, you'd think that would've all failed.
A gun designed to defend a country that annually turns into millions of square kms of frozen wasteland does well in freezing conditions.. and somehow that is a surprise to a lot of people. The big trigger guard - glove accesibility, the big selector lever - more leverage to get it moving when frozen and actually be able to operate it at all in heavy gloves.. and many other such compromises that make it a shit gun for a sunny day at the range, lo-drag hi-speed never hitting the dirt style of use. But its near perfect as something designed in the 40s to be mass produced for a huge army of conscripts that have to roll around in the dirt which depending on the season and region of Russia can commonly be: almost liquid, sand, frozen, actual swamp or even more fucking frozen. Fun times were had by the Wehrmacht when the knee-deep, all-covering liquid river of mud went straight into the frozen-as-hell stage pretty much overnight.
From this and other tests I have seen: The AR wins against mud. It is a rough tie between the two platforms against dust/fine dirt. The AK wins against ice. Both will function well if maintained in any reasonable fashion.
I've always been an AR guy, probably related to my usage of the platform in the military version. At the same time, I have forever had a fascination with the AK platform as well, and think that both have their place and uses. Now I just need to figure out how to scrape up the money for a SCAR and not end up divorced in the process
Yeah every mud test i seen where it failed, the safety was down while ar dust cover was closed. Testing for the stupid by the stupid. Safety on an ak also serves as a dust, mud, shit cover.
As a Swiss citizen, I do not feel offended when you refer to us „Europeans“. Switzerland has great gunlaws and an even greater gun community. Sportshooting is a traditional Sport in our tiny little country (we also have good connection to Russia, most of their civilian AKs are avaible here).
There are some rumors that float around about the gun laws and such in Switzerland. Is it true that your populace is actually quite well armed? As in most households have at least one firearm and a trained user. I’ve also heard most people who own guns train their family members on how to use them as well.
As a Brit I am supremely jealous of your gun laws but your car and driving laws leave a little to be desired but admittedly your train system has no parallel in the world!!
@@williamlacosse4197 yes, these rumors are true. We are quite well armed and even better trained. Every Swiss man has to do service in the army and therefore keeps his rifle at home.
On the subject of having a lackluster rifle in 7.62x39 my favorite rifle is my SKS-M that takes ak mags, its surprisingly reliable and it’s a ban era oddity so it serves as a reminder or how either party can ultimately screw is out of our gun rights.
On the first item i remember a story from an old german veteran who was at stalingrad in WW2. He had to leave his weapons outside when he went inside a bunker. If he took the gun with him inside, the very cold gun would become wet with condensation and freeze up solid once outside again. They learned that the hard way.
The ice test, and most others, are like tier lists in fighting games: The general public is too crap for it to matter and will never see the advantages.
I've found that asking about the AK-50 is like pushing the button on the elevator. It won't happen faster, but it makes me feel better, and gives me something to do!
@@muxahx3096 yeah apparently the Russian guy who is the head of the AK development team said they do all three in succession and then see if it still fires.
My theory is that the AR failed the ice test for the same reason it won the mud test. AKs have more gaps around the bolt carrier which likely lets the water drain out and lets mud in. ARs have tight seals which keeps mud out but also keeps water in. So while it let the AR blow through the mud, more water stayed in the bolt assembly and froze. Obviously the selector switch on the AK is more robust regardless too
You may think the Garand Thumb Ice test kinda irrelevant, but I've witnessed the effects of it in person in the 'balmy' temperatures of just around 30 degrees F. Range day, after a snow and there's freezing rain. I saw my ejection port cover freeze open and the selector switch get pretty stiff to operate. Steel and aluminum will NOT hold heat and tight tolerances and water tight are VERY different things. It told me that even in those not severe temps if there's a lot of moisture around, extra maintenance will be required for my weapon.
Simply going into a warm building causes a cold gun to collect moisture that, when you go back outside, freezes up. So, no need for snowstorm or rain or dropping the gun into a puddle or something like that for this to happen.
I would love to see GT's test done with graphite lube on everything, might make all the difference if the ice can't stick. Of course big chunks of ice in the FCG can kill anything and you can't really control where the ice is going to form.
After getting an SKS for Christmas, I have to suggest streaming the 4 hrs cleaning the cosmoline off one of those damn things for your 2 mil special. That would be hilarious.
I got a Yugo SKS from Big 5 Sporting Goods. They're based in Kalifornia, so they'd spot-welded a half-pound (at least) "muzzle brake" over the grenade launcher attachment to comply with CA law. As part of that process (I'm guessing), they'd cleaned the gun for me. Removing the "muzzle brake" took like 10 minutes with a file and a Dremel.
As an Ar guy personally, I have been enlightened; I like seeing what environments and conditions rifles can and cannot handle. Is it not the most realistic test? Yes. Does it make you think? Definitely.
As a Scots Irish man who can access AKs as easily as phoning the right person all I have to say about UK and Irish gun laws is "that's cute, didn't stop The RA or the UDA now did it?".
It makes sense, the features that make the AR more resilient in mud make it less tolerant to ice. The AK makes sense as a platform designed for Russian users where extreme cold is a significant environmental concern.
To be fair (to be faiah) the Kalashnikov Group already did an AK vs AR ice test a year ago, and their concise synopsis was "these rifles perform best in the conditions they were designed for. Which rifle is right for you depends on what you require from it." InRange already showed that the AR beats the AK in mud and that both do acceptable in dust, and KG and now Garand Thumb showed the AK beats the AR in cold/ice. Doesn't take a genius to predict that outcome.
Yeah but the Cold weather is a way more realistic scenario than getting globs of mud inside your gun, then again it's easy to pop off the dust cover to shake or wipe off the mud from an AK.
@@DG-pk3fh yeah, that's a difference of opinion. How often are you gonna fall in a lake in zero degree Temps? How often is the American military soilders going to crawl through mud? Obviously both have strengths and weaknesses. Also, if you fall in a lake in freezing Temps your at danger of dying just as much as the enemy.
It's arguably much easier to douse your weapon in light fuel and light it on fire to melt the ice or throw it under the hood of a vehicle to warm it than it is to detail clean the crevices of debris. 🤷♂️ But we do need a new upper and lower with lots of room like an AK so it can be the goat it was always meant to be. /S, just a little.
@@DG-pk3fh tell that to the people that realized we needed to make the ar/m4 platform after vietnam where mud and shit was realized to be almost everywhere even places that didnt have ice and shit.
Honestly, it would be super cool if you did a beginner AK video showing (in your opinion) what the best AK to buy is if you're getting into the platform for the first time. And/or you could do a video on the best AKs to buy at various different price points.
if you'd like a high quality first AK, you're probably looking for a milled one that's from a soviet/eastern block country, i suggest an Arsenal Sam7, they'ye made in Bulgaria and are machined by hand, although they're a little pricey at $2k.
I'd been looking at a bull pup for a while. Looking into the AUG I came across the tavor 18 I believe. It's looking like a good modernized version of bull pup capability.
The story I remember reading years ago was that a Russian man bought what were supposed to be a bunch of empty wooden crates for firewood. Except they weren't all empty.

I love how you just called out one of the most upsetting things that causes channels to die, it's honestly sad. Much love Brandon Herrera, stay real and keep up the good content👍
Brandon, the answer to your question - it was in an article a couple years ago. A man was selling "empty wooden military crates" for cheap. This guy in some village bought the crates to use for firewood. Turned out they were full of AK's. He told the authorities, hence an article was written about it.
I feel like that was gonna be such an obvious win for AKs that its surprising that people didn't see it coming. A simpler build and an overall focus on cold resistance of the AK (cause you know, Russia is cold. You want your weapon to work flawlessly in your own land). It would have been a lot more surprising for the AK to lose in cold weather.
Keep in mind that a lot of people were fooled into thinking Russia was going to start an offensive operation against Ukraine in December. I wouldn't be shocked to see Russia move in a little more, but it's not going to happen in December.
right? The ak literally works even when you’ve put hundreds of rounds through it as fast as possible, and is literally on fire and melting. Check the Kalashnikov groups channel, they stress test them to extreme degrees
This is so timely. Just last week at my local gun club, I was having trouble with light strikes from my bolt action 22 mag rifle. The older fellas enlightened me on the effects of cold temps on most gun oils. I ran the rest of the match by putting the bolt in my pocket inside my coat whenever I was waiting my turn. So I asked them what does everybody do for the monthly milsurp matches that go on through the winter? The guy laughed and said "Everybody brings their Russian guns!" Problem solved, I guess my SKS and M44 will be present this Saturday...

The thing is, Kalashnikov ground did an AK vs AR freeze test a few years ago. The AKs had to be mortared to get the first round chambered, but once that first round fired, the gun was warmed up and good to go. The ARs were the opposite, the safety worked fine, and the charging handle was easy to work, the ARs just wouldn’t shoot.
When you do get to 2 million subs I think it would be really cool to see a video with your father, going through his collection (that is only if the two of y’all are comfortable/able to do so). I remember in one of your previous videos you mentioned going into your dads collection and just taking apart and rebuilding AK’s for hours. One of my friends from the UK saw one documentary on Flint and changed her mind on guns - she still hates guns, something I totally respect because I believe in Free Speech even if the UK is a bit annoyed with the concept, but she at least understands why it is that guns in the hands of a law abiding gun owner are often the best deterrent against threats.
Yeah im from the UK and was unsure what i thought about it. My view is still "im glad they arent common here" but the main thing i was confused by was "why is the solution to gun violence more guns?" After watching more of Donut and his police breakdowns i sorta realised that its kinda the only solution. So many people dont wanna give up their guns and if the government did come knocking asking for your guns, the only people who would willingly give them up are law abiding citizens, and those are the exact people who i wouldnt mind owning guns because they probably arent gonna do anything bad with it.
Honestly, the only torture test I've seen the AR outperform the AK on was the mud test, and I always viewed the mud test as the exception that proved the rule when it came to AR vs. AK reliability. The general rule of thought (whether accurate or not) is that the AK is very loosely built while the AR is very tightly, precision built. Therefore, the AK will be more reliable as there can be more stuff inside the gun and still give enough space for the parts to move, while the AR would choke up a lot quicker if stuff does get inside. However, the mud test is so goopy and thick that no action can possibly survive with that much crud inside, so the AR wins out there because the tight fitting seals the internals from said mud. The same reason is why the Luger absolutely kicked the Glock's ass in InRangeTV's pistol mud test, too. But at the same time, the Luger has a reputation for being quite finnicky and high maintenance because while the toggle lock does seal it up well and prevent mud from getting it, it takes less stuff inside, including carbon from the round firing, to gum it up. Same deal with the AR, and that's why ARs require more maintenance and lubricant to function than AKs do. In the ice test, particularly, what I think happened is the AR isn't completely airtight, so you can never keep water from getting inside. And therefore, once the internals got covered in water and frozen up, it was game over. Meanwhile, the AK had stronger springs and more leeway to move around and therefore worked fine. I also think everything being more tightly put together was why the M14 failed the way it did. Since both the M14 and the AK took design inspiration from the M1 Garand, including the FCU, I didn't expect the M14 to drop the sear and have the hammer lock up like that. However, that M14 was a Fulton Armory M14 designed for precision shooting, so they probably tightened up the parts and lightened the springs to make the trigger pull less heavy, which makes it shoot nicer but also means it's more likely to lock up. I'm now curious how a rack grade CMP M1 Garand would perform just to see if my theory is correct. Also, James from TFBTV did a similar test between the AR and AK using dry ice, and the AK also kicked the AR's ass there. So it wasn't a surprise to me in Garand Thumb's ice test that the AK kicked the AR's ass there too. EDIT: Also, I'm Chinese, so it's interesting that all Pacific Northwest guys look the same, too.
The ironic thing: Washington made asians white now because asian students and white students perform at or above state academic standards and therefore ruin the narrative that only white students outperform all others.
I'm from Wyoming. I live near the bighorn mountains and negative 10 to 20 degree weather is common. I left some rifles in my truck for 3 days and when I took them out they were frozen and had ice on all of them. I frequently have problems with my ar-15 and my ak47s run without issues.
Imagine if the response was " I have 2 lord titles in Scotland and 1 in Wales. I also have property on the moon and have 7 stars named after me. Do you?"
I watch Garand Thumb's "Ice Test" last night, and "truth be told" I was surprised by the result of several of the platforms... but NOT the AK's or AR's... The FN SCAR , the FAL and the LMT were all surprising to me. I find it hilarious the reaction of "social media"... which I would have never known, if I did not visit "The AK Guy"... so that is what I heard last night, millions of cries and weeping and bitching... I thought it was the north wind blowing. Epic video Mr Herrera.... I am laughing so hard. Cheers and Wish you and the gang a Very Happy New Year.
11:19 actually I’ve done a lot of testing on this and as I’ve found out through rigorous testing babies are better at stopping bullets the only down side is you lose stealth when using a baby instead of an armor plate
I'm an AR guy and I was absolutely ecstatic seeing those expensive ARs get locked up. I loved it so much. People sit there and bash my aero Precision homebuild when they put their 3k Daniel Defense next to it but guess what it's going to freeze up just the same as my aero. Hahahahaha

@@kennydoggins1712 except for the fact that monsoon seasons and below freezing weather are usually a few months apart. Or the fact that most states that get monsoons usually don't get consistently cold enough to freeze water. Getting some water in your gun isn't gonna kill it, unless it's a Scar and it rusts out
the Kalashnikov group already did one of those freeze tests a while ago on their ak12 vs m4 video, put it up on their yt channel, and had to redo the test AGAIN because people were butthurt about the ar freezing. even when the kalashnikov people gave a very unbiased and logical explanation about why it happened, and why it wasnt shit because of that. people just cant stop complaining... btw i really recommend their channel
Just like when the less reasonable AK people, obviously not us, get butthurt when AKs fail mud tests. There is no "best gun" just different advantages to different systems.
@@Devin_Stromgren yeah, in the inrange mud tests, the ak didnt do as well as people expected, and while the ar did a lot better on those no person with a bit of sense would doubt the ak's legendary reliability based on just a very specific and hard test. they are tools, with certain design and build tolerances. what might be good for one thing might lack a bit on other.
Heard stories growing up about a squad leader ordering his new replacements to ditch the m16 and then beg borrow or steal an AK. Diff conditions, same toughness
Watching the video... I bought a 44 Mag Lever Action from Rossi last Spring. Before buying it, I asked my local gun dealer, who I trust and who was not the dealer selling it, his opinion of the Rossi guns. He had very positive things to say about them. So, I went ahead with the purchase. I have been very happy with mine. Only complaint is how stiff the side loading gate is but that can be easily remedied if one wishes. Some people claimed the metal edges around the loading gate are too sharp. I haven't had any issues there, but my attitude is, "Guns are supposed to be dangerous things, not child safe toys. If your gun bites your finger off every once in a while, to remind you of that, it's a good thing!" Some people are just haters. If my Rossi ever fails, I'll apologize to said haters, but don't hold your breath for that day.

The story of 79 accidentally bought AKs is very old (about 10 years old) - the man bought wooden crates for firewood. The crates turned out not to be empty =)
Too bad the HK G3, or even the HK93 weren't there in the test. Roller delayed blowback rifles can survive cold temperatures that can otherwise make even long stroke gas piston operated rifles malfunction.
Rollers have more problems in the cold, more surface area in the action for condensation and lock up. What really prevents these issues is having a receiver that adequately seals the action off from the outside. As well as some graphene lubricants.
@@sambalboa4897 If I ain't wrong Pakistan uses licensed clones of G3. You can't compare the clone of G3 made by some third world country to a real German G3 or a G3 clone made by good rifle makers. G3 rifles are highly reliable. I use a Vector V93 and a PTR 32, they work without a hitch even in the Alaskan weather.

Thumb proved that anyone who pours water in their gun and then forgets it outside in subfreezong temperatures should probably be an AK owner. Not just for reliability, but for the caveman level thinking, too.
When I served in the Canadian Forces we would sleep outside for more than one night in January. Some nights were -20 Celsius and lower. Frost would build up on our C7A1 (M16A3) rifles without getting the rifle wet. The same way frost builds up on a car on a winter morning. Sometimes those rifles were real stiff in the morning. That's why we slept with them in our sleeping bags
I was lucky enough to play with the full auto ak when I was in the army. We were aggressors for infantry training. We got both the ar and the ak. Which we took to the field depended on the mission. The ak was a little more loose with its tolerance. Which made it more forgiving of bad conditions and lack of maintenance. We fired blanks which really carboned up the rifle. Sold on its abilities. But I wanted the American made choice. That is the only reason I did not get an ak style rifle. Us old guys huh who figured. I was in the army when the soviets were our main enemy.
It's basically a novelty souvenir, it doesn't actually bestow any legal right to the title of Lord/Laird. The seller of the deed to a piece of land (if recognised by british peerage laws) can initiate the process to rightfully claiming an aristocratic title but there are a whole bunch of legal hoops to jump through before you can legally use the title. It's an expensive and time consuming process involving lawyers, government officials and tons of official documents without any guarantee of success or tangible benefit at the end. Being American definitely doesn't help because I'm fairly sure there is something in the constitution about needing permission from Congress to accept a title from a foreign head of state.
As someone who grew up in the pacific northwest yes, alot of people look very similar to one another it's horrible getting lost from your friends at the malls up their cuz you won't find them again until one of you walks to and waits by the car if you take longer than your friends after getting lost you'll probably get one text 2 minutes before they just leave you lmao

@@fieldmarshalbaltimore1329 I suppose if you set a hot gun down in the snow and then sleep for the night maybe...

The first test is somewhat reasonable. Getting some snow on your gun, letting it melt and then leaving the gun in the cold for a bit is a realistic scenario.

Which is why you need both types of rifles. And it's the reason I'm looking into getting an AKM now.
That’s why I have both. Though I do definitely prefer the ak
Well, the AK only loses to mud easily if it’s safety is off, witch is also the case if an AK goes through an ice test with its safety off so yeah.

Brandon is now LITERALLY a meme LORD lol
Was just gonna comment that a firefight in a snowstorm makes the gun wet, and well water freezes in the cold.

Doesn't take a genius to predict that outcome.

Yes, I second this.
Yes, I third this
Honestly, the only torture test I've seen the AR outperform the AK on was the mud test, and I always viewed the mud test as the exception that proved the rule when it came to AR vs.

@@FirstnameLastname-do1px 1. He said he's Chinese so you may be right

the Kalashnikov group already did one of those freeze tests a while ago on their ak12 vs m4 video, put it up on their yt channel, and had to redo the test AGAIN because people were butthurt about the ar freezing. even when the kalashnikov people gave a very unbiased and logical explanation about why it happened, and why it wasnt shit because of that. people just cant stop complaining...
btw i really recommend their channel
If your gun bites your finger off every once in a while, to remind you of that, it's a good thing!"
Some people are just haters. If my Rossi ever fails, I'll apologize to said haters, but don't hold your breath for that day.
I’m an AR guy and I knew that AKs we’re gonna do much better in those conditions considering they were made with those extreme weather conditions in mind
I'm not ashamed to admit I laughed at the baby ballistic meme. That said I have that carrier and it is fantastic. Very comfortable and useful; plus It help my son fall asleep on multiple occasions.

I really wish someone would cover the C8 and C7 rifles here in Canada. They are great quality and manufactured to a different standard because of the cold and harsh weather. Canadian rifles need some love
They took our ar 15's. They are gonna get my colt Canada iur here shortly
Can canadians own those ? Serious question

The story of 79 accidentally bought AKs is very old (about 10 years old) - the man bought wooden crates for firewood. The crates turned out not to be empty =)
only in russia
I love milsurp.
Wait... So if there were only 79 AK's... Where was the 80th?
AR: Can’t perform in sub zero conditions
AK: can’t shoot sub MOA groups
Both have their advantages and disadvantages
Pay them money they will give ya any document you want. "Pig in a tux is still a pig."
I got a hk93 clone and it's running great. It hasn't failed to load or fire yet. Roller delayed blowback has awesome reliability
Not necesarily bro, Pakistan Army regulars fighting in sub zero temperatures in Kargil War 1999 preferred Aks to G3s as they jammed a lot.
Interesting. I’ll have to chuck my CETME in the freezer and test that out
It's okay, Brandon- I already bought 2 guns this year as well, trying to resist a third- we all fall off the wagon, sometimes. Stay strong brother, I will see you at the weekly meeting. #LETSGOBRANDON
Your profile picture is great.
But were the guns new or used?
Thumb proved that anyone who pours water in their gun and then forgets it outside in subfreezong temperatures should probably be an AK owner. Not just for reliability, but for the caveman level thinking, too.
I cannot believe you haven't received any hate under this comment. 😂

I was in the army when the soviets were our main enemy.

not too sure on the laws, but isnt everyone who owns a house in the UK a lord?
@@ninjasocks6823 a landlord lol

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to Russia. For firewood. #akgnotificationsquad

Since childhood I have known that it is possible to buy a small strip of land, ( sometimes only a few square yards)and thus gain the relevant title.
