This really depends on which you're focused - check the Combat Karate, where you'll find a lot of Shotokan fighters (as well as other "traditional" styles).

People who claim they don’t work are clueless… too many examples to cite. Shotokan is a pretty dominate style of karate. That said one really can’t compare and contrast different Ryu in karate … they are all great with their individual pros and cons OSS!

There are good examples in kickboxing and MMA who make effective use of Karate techniques such as sweeps, throws, knees, open-hand strikes, footwork and etc. It isn't just the punches and kicks. What bothers me is that casual viewers can't see them in the ring and cage because they are not familiar with those methods. All they need to do is just ask professional coaches who have extensive knowledge in traditional fighting arts and see the benefits of those methods like Vinicio Antony, George St Pierre and Bas Rutten.
Karate is good, it's called mixed martial arts for a reason. People in the 80's thought karate was the best thing in the world. The early UFC's exposed It's flaws on the ground and in the clinch. Karate works in mma when the practitioner is good with wrestling and jujitsu. Machida is also a black belt in Brazilian jujitsu and he's trained in sumo and judo too. Wonderboy can grapple as well. Karate is good, it just has some holes in it.

One can see this as merely a brawl or a cockfight with no technique at first glance, but in reality all the fighters have spent endless hours training and honing their skills, techniques and precision. shotokan is like addiction I joined for sometime now my kids started learning shotokan I also strated .Man u gets satisfaction and energy in shotokan although learned taecondo for sometime shotokan is best for any age group.

I like the Shotokan Karate kumite that was done years ago much more than the contemporary one even if and as ex I practiconer have direct experience a boxer would have killed us all, I later practiced KickBoxing and it is much more effective, but in KickBoxing lacks beauty and perfection of the techniques Karate is much more elegant.👊
So many people have the preconceived notion that if your a black belt you should be able to beat anyone when in fact getting your black belt is like standing at the bottom of Mt Everest before you begin the accent. At first Don you now have the skills and tools you need to start the up hill journey to real perfection. Very few make it to the top of the mountain. In my mind there are three main reasons for the decay - money, the breakup of JKA when Nakayama passed away and the change in the rules to what it is today. There was a time when you reasonably accurate guess what grade a karateka is. As time moved on I would sit in on the grading panel and see a person get a higher grade but there was no improvement in technique or standard.

Part of the black belt test was punching a pen held by the Sensei to determine how much you could control your punches. When the adrenaline of a match gets going, controlling punches is much harder.
idk about JKA but i am blue belt shotokan karate senpai and in WKF, you can't knockout someone in kumite. You need to hit at right time and take the point. Heavy punches to the face (not kicks) is let you take warning.

I dont know about other organisations and i havent trained or competed in like 10 years, but under jka generally the international competitions (gichin funkaoshi cup etc) they have very light gloves (smaller than mma) and the more prestigious all japan cup (the japanese talent/skill level is way above all other countries so thats the highest level of competition and its in japan) they dont use gloves. some fighters wrapped their fist so they dont get cut up. as far as i am aware in japan karate competitions arent regulated to wear gloves and its done at the high levels of the sport.
Not really, lyoto and chinzo machida are successful in the octagon. Both are proud of their JKA roots. Their father is a JKA instructor and still teaching. Chinzo was heavily active in JKA tournaments like these ones.
Regardless if the videos are old or new, it still shows that you can knock someone out with a single punch through shotokan. Course shotokan ain't the only approach because you have boxing, kickboxing and muay thai who have the same idea.
This was/is exactly the problem with this Bullshite ‘ no face contact’ competition 😡. Rubbish control, and more often than not a bullying tactic by many competitors. Guarantee if most of these ‘knockout artists’ tried their hand at full contact they would get their arses whooped.
There are practical branches of hard-style Karate which reemphasize realistic types of freestyle sparring/full contact Kumite (e.g. Jiyu Kumite and Irikumi formats) and reintroduce grappling plus practical applications into the curriculum. Look for Shidokan Karate and Seidokaikan Karate for good examples. Sport Karate does not represent every dojo since different dojostrain differently.

@Stevo No it’s not mostly kata. Before cameras and books all martial arts were taught using kata. That’s how the techniques were passed on.

Karate is dead
There are practical branches of hard-style Karate which reemphasize realistic types of freestyle sparring/full contact Kumite (e.g. Jiyu Kumite and Irikumi formats) and reintroduce grappling plus practical applications into the curriculum. Look for Shidokan Karate and Seidokaikan Karate for good examples. Sport Karate does not represent every dojo since different dojostrain differently.
