  • This time around, I'll move on to setting up my toms. I'm going with one rack tom and one floor tom (12", 14" respectively). I'll try to get them tuned up and stick some mics on them to see how they sound when recorded.

Dude you did a great job on those toms. They sound awesome to me. The pitch bend thing is exactly as you mentioned - the top and bottom head relationship. It is a lot harder to achieve on the smaller toms so don't fret about that 12" too much. Again, changing those stock cheapo reso heads will help. The Evans G1 clear is a fantastic durable reso head. Also, a 6 lug floor tom is tough to deal with but you did great. No problem there. I think you got the toms figured out. Good work!

Thanks a ton Greg! I ended up tuning the 12" down quite a bit tonight. So far I like it, but I'm sure that as soon as I wake up tomorrow and hear it, I'll hate it again :)
I can feel the mounting shame about my reso heads. I feel like the guy that's been walking around with toilet paper stuck to his shoe, wondering why everybody is looking at him funny.

Sounds really good! Also, you must be rich with those mics!! All three of my Tom mics cost the same as one of yours! I hit mine all the time too lol

hahaha yeah, I've spent a silly amount of money on my microphones. I get a lot of enjoyment out of them though. The MD421 has been great, it's a versatile mic. I've used it for kick, toms, bass amps, guitar cabs, vocals, spoken word. I've become kinda addicted to microphones lately. I want them all :)
I did get a sweet deal on one of my MD421 mics on Reverb, though. It just took a few weeks of patiently waiting for the right one to come up for sale. I wish I'd been smart enough to have done that for my other one, which I bought for full retail (ouch!).

A trick : you can watch series at flixzone. Been using it for watching a lot of movies lately.

I'm also regularly appalled at the cost of MD421's. I want one but fuck, $600 aussie dollary doo's is nuts. I can get 4 SM57's or 58's for that.

Agreed! I bought my 2nd one used off of Reverb and I got a great deal on it. They're great mics but dang, Sennheiser needs to bring the retail price down on those things!

Enjoying this drum series you did! Are those Audix DVice drum clips on the snare and rack? And what's the gooseneck you're using on the floor tom? I have an e604 with a clip for my rack tom but I'd like to clip my 57 and 421 to the snare and floor tom like you did.

Hey thanks so much! I really appreciate it.
Yeah, those are the Audix DVice clips. I think they're good, but not great. The clamps themselves work well for most drums, but the goosenecks tend to sag a little with those heavy MD-421 mics on them (the goosenecks came with the clamps). The sag isn't bad, but I do find that I have to reposition the mics every so often because they've drooped a bit. Still, I like them because it's better than having even more mic stands taking up floor space, so I put up with the occasional droopage :)

Can I suggest something that I find exceptionally useful with no stress/worry, regarding all this? Because I've been you. :)
Get a decent v-drum kit (or do a DIY build, which is relatively easy and CHEAP), and buy Toontrack's Superior Drummer 3, and really, call it a day. All kits, professionally-recorded by pro engineers. You want a 1930s kit? You've got one. How about a perfectly-recorded Ludwig Black Beauty from the 60s? You've got it. Perfect toms. Perfect everything. Mix it how you want (more room, less room... overheads cranked... overheads barely there... etc.)
I basically never even bother to try to record real drums anymore. And I have a good-sounding kit (Pacific CX-- low-end DW from like 15 years ago). I want variety, I want the drums to have the vibe of whatever I'm going for, without much effort. Superior Drummer 3 allows me total freedom and flexibility. No stress. Perfect-sounding tracks every time.
Watch "DrumAngleOfficial" on RUclips. Or check out Mike Luke's channel, as he reviews all things Toontrack. Or, check out DrumTec's "Superior Drummer 3" video. There's just no reason to stress about recording a real kit, anymore. These sampled kits are not only an absolute JOY to play (especially with headphones)... they're just perfect in every way. Consider it. Your life will change.

I've actually been there and done that :) I've got a Yamaha DTX400K (with upgraded 3-zone snare and kick tower), Superior Drummer 2 and 3, Slate Platinum 4, EZ Drummer 2 and 3. Lots of great drum sounds. I like them for quick composing and arranging, but they've always left me feeling flat when playing and mixing them. There's just something that I enjoy much more about laying into a real drum head and feeling that feedback. And I love mixing a real kit compared to a sampled kit. Even with all of the bleed turned on, it's just not the same. I can't really explain why.
I really want to learn and develop the art of recording an acoustic set, especially in these times where the unique (if imperfect) qualities of each individual kit are being lost and replaced with the same handful of kits that have been sampled by Toontrack and Slate. I mean, those are fantastic sounding kits, but tens of thousands of people are using those same kits recorded with the same tunings, same heads, same sticks, in the same room.
There's just something really attractive about making something unique and bespoke, even if I'm struggling to get there. I'm determined to get better though, and I'm enjoying the journey :)
