      I had a friend bring back chocolate from Germany when I was in high school. She gave me a bar and my world exploded into an incredible flavor I had never tasted before. German chocolate is the absolute best. My daughter has always been a chocolate fan, but she’s mainly grown up on American chocolate. She loves kinder eggs, but t’s my dream to find her some authentic German chocolate and have her try it. If you have any recommendations of what name brand of chocolate to get and where to buy it that delivers to California, I would be ever so grateful! ☺️

    • @christophermunton9623
      @christophermunton9623 8 дней назад +8

      I'm from York, and I can tell you that when Rountree's was fully on the go, the smell of chocolate in the air was sublime. Back in the 80's and early 90's, you'd get the smell of chocolate from Rountree's, the smell from the sugar factory, and the smell from Terry's and Cravens. It was so intense that even Willy Wonker would've blown his load 🤣
      My grandfather was a charge hand for KitKat at Rountree's, he was there all his working life. When he retired, he was given a very expensive hand crafted clock made from walnut with a brass plate that had his name and service dates engraved onto it. We still have the clock, and it's perfectly restored, working, and in mint condition. It's a piece of Yorks chocolate production history.

      @StevenKeery - Bizarrely enough, I've never even considered that before. It's almost paradoxical, crazy even. It's not something that employers do in the U.K anymore in fact, you're lucky if you get a card and a gift voucher.
      I'm glad my grandfather got his clock, though. It's a work of art, and like I said before, it's a piece of Yorks chocolate production history.

      The Cadbury bars of my childhood were made under license by Hershey’s. They were somewhat better than regular Hershey’s, but not really that good. Maybe not now, but years ago Creme Eggs were imported from England where the chocolate was smoother.
      There has always better quality American chocolate, like Guittard (mostly sold in bulk to candymakers like See’s), TCHO, and even Mars. I’ve had samples of Mars bulk chocolate at the Ethel M factory in the Vegas area, and that is extremely smooth and suitable for high end candies. Nothing like your stereotypical, High fiving, USA chanting, Maga cap wearing Americans you see in the media. Im still in touch with them to this day.
    The one thing i remember was the sea food. Especially in fishermans Wharf in San Francisco. The best Clam Chowder I've ever had and was served in a bowl made from bread.
    I went in 1997 and 2000 for six months. I'm planning on taking my girlfriend next year, cause she's never been. We're hoping to spend 3/4 days in each place.
    I've never been to New York, so we're going there and Philly, New Orleans, Somewhere in Texas like Austin. And I'd love to go back to San Francisco and San Diego.

      @@tonydaddario4706 Cadbury don't give a % of cocoa solids for 'Dairy Milk' on their web site. However, both Sainsbury's and Tesco do; it's 23% and they both note the minimum is 20%, not 25%. Hearshey's is noticeably inferior to UK made Cadbury's Dairy Milk. However I agree with @ambersmith459, Cadbury's is at the lower end of UK chocolate. Decades ago, Ghirardelli was a reasonable US chocolate.
      Cadbury's chocolate has gone down hill. I'm old enough to remember 'Dairy Milk' in the late 60s. I don't believe my taste buds are so degraded to mistake the modern, inferior, Dairy Milk for 1960s Dairy Milk. I think Dairy Milk might have noticeably degraded twice, but I was eating better chocolate from the early 90s onwards, so I might be mistaken and it was just much worse than good chocolate. Suffice it to say as Hershey's is inferior to UK Dairy Milk, so is modern UK Dairy Milk inferior to 1960s Dairy Milk.
      To appreciate how bad it is, Cadbury's Bournville 'Dark Chocolate' has less cocoa solids than Green & Black's Milk chocolate; IIRC less than Green & Black's White chocolate.
      I usually eat 70%+ chocolate, it counts as a 'plant point' 😋 and not too sugary. Cadbury's have nothing.

    The thing is - in the UK & Europe, chocolate is for adults - all the ads & marketing is aimed at adults. In the US, there is more sugar in the bars so they're called Candy Bars & are aimed at children. By the way - Cadbury's Dairy Milk is not chocolate. It's only 20% cocoa which means that it can't put "chocolate" on the wrapper. Their Wispa & Twirl bars are chocolate.

Thankfully a lot of these British chocolates are sold in markets here, so I've had a lot of them. My recommendation is "Flake." It is soooo weird. The bar is intentionally so crumbly and flaky but it literally just melts in your mouth.

      As a brit I definitely recommend Flake. The most poplular thing we get from ice cream vans is a "99" which is just soft-serve with a flake stuck in it.
      Also, personally the crumbliness can get a bit messy and annoying so I also recommend looking out for Twirl, which is basically a flake with a solid outer shell, plus that gives it a little more bite 😋

      the flake is something europeans grew up eating with ice-creams not alot of people just eat the bar straight. i recommend breaking some onto vanilla icecream

      flake isnt a chocolate bar really, you always get a flake in your 99 (ice cream in a cone, cost 99p thats why its called that) If you want a better version of a flake get a Galaxy Ripple.

      Not necessarily. There’s some extremely good American manufactured chocolate such as TCHO and Guittard. Hershey’s did buy out several high end candy companies but then either shut them down or changed them, like Scharffen Berger and Dagoba. However, it’s not typically found at the checkout stand.

      I find Flake a little too fragile. I'd choose a Twirl over it, for less mess, though it doesn't taste quite as good as a Flake.

    A few years ago, a colleague went to the US to do some work at NASA. She brought back some Hersheys chocolate as a "treat" for the department. It was absolutely rank. Not one person could eat it.
    But Cadburys cream eggs are absolutely foul too.The Terry's factory in York has closed and is now luxury housing and Terrys chocolate oranges are actually made in France.

    Chocolate contains a minimum of 35% total cocoa solids and 18% cocoa butter. Manufacturers in the UK and Ireland often opt for a lower quantity of cocoa solids, and frequently replace some of the cocoa butter with vegetable oils. And then they bump up the price. This started when both Ireland and the UK became members of the European Union in 1973.

    Sadly they didn't get to try Cadburys as it was 15 + years ago before the takeover when for a mid market quality bar it was amazing with a unique and quite high percentage cocoa content and flavour and more creamy than now. The current products have much more sugar than they used to as it is used as a cheap filler

    • @randombabe99
      @randombabe99 15 дней назад +6

      Yeah, it was amazing but then it got bought out by mondolez. I was super upset, as there was a campaign to keep it British. I’m from Birmingham where it’s originally made, and Cadburys is such an institution here, like at some point each child is taken to Cadbury world as part of a school trip etc.

      I don't live far from Bourneville. I think they shouldn't be allowed to call it Cadbury. It's not the recipe and it tastes awful now. I ate a caramel bar after the swap and I spat it out it was so vile. I'm really really shocked there wasn't more of a fuss after people had tasted what they've turned it into. Flat sugar taste.

      During WWII in Britain, oranges were hard to come by, so at Christmas it was a real treat to get an orange in your stocking. My grandparents and parents have continued the tradition ever since. Terry's Orange was a great update to the tradition.

      I live in Florida and I think the reason they aren’t as popular here even though you can buy them in stores, is that oranges are everywhere, and chocolate melts easily, so if I want to treat myself to some chocolate, I probably don’t want it to be orange flavored, and I wouldn’t want it to be packaged like that even though it looks cool because it would be a hassle to deal with in the Florida heat. That’s not to say I haven’t had them before. I grew up in Alaska and got them for Christmas. But now that I’m in Florida I’d rather just have an orange that I can get for free off a tree :)

      @@b_korthuisMy grandpa usually got an orange for Christmas during the Great Depression as a once a year treat. That would be the only present they could afford for all the kids (13 total), so oranges are traditional here at Christmas too. We always had them included at Christmas when I was a kid.

    that aside, having tasted some british chocolate myself this past year (thanks, nathan), i'd say that i don't really like any of these besides tea cakes lmao
    my mother has loved terry's since i was younger, but neither of us knew it was british.
