- In today's video, we were reunited with our friend @mrnigelng AKA Uncle Roger who had himself recently made the move to LA. We thought it'd be fun to go grocery shopping at Erewhon - the most expensive grocery store in the world, to see if their sky-high prices were really worth it!

I'm from the southern US. Some of the popular foods here in the US, such as BBQ ribs, started off as food that was enjoyed mostly by lower income households. Lower income households found different ways to make affordable food taste good. Then, when wealthier people tried them, they created higher demand and now the foods that were seen as lower income foods are now way too expensive.

It's deserved. But none of the rich people care, or probably even disagree with their take. They pay more so they don't have to be around the peasants and it's also a status symbol. Probably also not super packed all the time either.

The only people you should tip our restaurant employees waiters and waitresses but they better be literally pulling your chair out for you cleaning your shoes. If they notice there’s a scuff on it that’s the type of service that’s worthy of a tip but most of these moron, kids will walk out there with their cell phone not even listening to your order and having to come back to your table several times because they made mistakes with something as simple as a hamburger french fries and a Coke, this is why nobody deserves tips and by the way, Rob milk is incredible for you. Absolutely incredible raw milk is living milk pasteurized milk is milk that has had all of its benefits killed and destroyed out of it and that’s exactly why people get lactose intolerance, because drinking pasteurized milk You’re left with a lot of lactose that your body can’t process, but raw milk has enzymes in it naturally occurring that break down the lactose in your stomach and make it completely harmless. People with lactose intolerance can actually drink raw milk and have no issues. That’s the funny thing is that milk is incredible for you just not pasteurized milk only RAW Milk .
Often they had to eat food that was frankly going off and the flavouring of the spices etc was to cover up the taste of the rancid meat. Hence the more flavouring the poorer the people. Rich people could eat the unadulterated fresh food and enjoy the real subtle flavour of the meat. Accustomed to eating fresh fish straight out of the North Sea I thought fish from the fishmongers was bad, going off as it had a strong fish flavour. I wasn’t popular with the chef!!

Seriously you guys are so stupid raw milk has incredible health benefits for you and if it wasn’t for big milk industry, trying to keep the health benefits hidden from you by telling you raw milk is dangerous people would understand what it’s capable of raw milk can literally heal all kinds of nutritional issues you can live off of nothing more than milk for several months without any issues. History has shown that just because people are wealthy does not mean they are inherently smart, and are just as likely to fall for snake oil. If anything, they seem to take more pride in buying into the snake oil so long as it's marketed right.

As someone who briefly worked at Erewhon I can confirm even all the employees and managers know how terrible all the food is and are baffled people buy it🤣you do get to see a lot of celebs though but you aren’t allowed to ask for pics

I've worked retail in a celebrity heavy town...we got celebs of all stripes, from the biggest jerk to the nicest guy. But I won't mention names, lest they sue me...😄
You mean the prepared foods specifically?
the "miracle" behind the noodle is that its a noodle made from a plant that has little to no carbs. So it allows people with celiac or who are following keto to eat similar style noodle dishes without worrying. It became very popular a few years ago as an alternative. The actual name is Shirataki noodles, Miracle Noodle is just a brand name that became the defacto name used when referencing the product since it was the one which gained such wide spread popularity
There are better noodle options for celiac people already, like rice noodles or soba.
The miracle is that you can eat a lot of it without gaining weight/having your blood sugar shoot up. It's not for people who actually need the calories, or who hate the digestive effects of the noodles.
The only thing miraculous about those noodles is the amount of money stupid people who follow TikTok trends will pay for them. You can buy the exact same item in any Asian grocery for a fraction of the price.
@@MarkDeSade100 A lot of soba noodles have wheat in them. People with celiac have to be very careful with that. For some people, even the tiniest amount of wheat causes huge health issues.
People eat shark and guano but I don’t see anyone trying to imitate those to eat.

How about the “how to improve on the hot dog” episode? The one with the “hot dong”, aka bull’s penis? It wasn’t the actual meat, which just curled up when cooked, but when Ollie showed him a photo (on his phone) of what it looked like before it was cooked. Then photos of what it looked like as it was boiled.
I found one American farm that sells them online (White Oak Pastures in Georgia) for $32.99 plus shipping. Their sales copy is pretty good.

There is one near me in my hometown. My son and I walked through there and were absolutely horrified at the prices. Needless to say, we walked straight to the Trader Joe’s down the street. The store is by the studios, so that tells you everything you need to know. If studio people (actors, directors, producers, etc) want to be stupid and spend $20 on a smoothie then that’s on them. This store makes Whole Paycheck look like Dollar General.

This is obviously true, but mostly because "street food" - especially in the poorest districts of the world - is extremely poor quality, and requires lots of salt, sugar, spice etc to mask the taste of what is frequently spoiling or even "recycled".

A lot of poverty foods were the cheapest, toughest cuts of meat. Like brisket, oxtail, or tongue. But man they taste good when properly prepared.

Hey Josh and Olly, you probably won't read this, but I just wanted to say I am a new big fan of you guys. I discovererd you sometime this year when the highschool series popped up on my feed. And soon I saw more videos, and I was hooked with you guys. First I did not even realize you had two channels. But now I'm following both Jolly and Korean Englishman, and also Gabbie's channel. You guys always bring a smile to my face, and I am craving real Korean food now thanks to you.
I tried watching ALL of your videos from the past, starting with the oldest. With Jolly I would say I watched two thirds of your videos now. Korean Englishman I still have a lot more to watch.

As others have pointed out, raw milk is not pasteurized or homogenized. There were dairies in my area that used to sell it, but they quit about 20 years ago. Since it is not pasteurized, it must be produced under the strictest of sanitation as there is nothing to kill any bacteria that may creep in (that's why it costs so much). Since it is not homogenized, the cream separates and rises to the top so you have to shake it really well before pouring it or, as Uncle Roger found out, that first swig tastes REALLY good as he was just getting a big dose of cream!
Yep, and when it isn't produced under the strictest of sanitation standards someone will very quickly find out why we invented pasteurization in the first place because a bad batch is basically the worst food poisoning you can get.
i don't see why dairy being unpasteurized is a selling point for some people, but I do love eating the cream off pasteurized unhomogenized milk and yogurt
@@vin2164 When I was a kid, I couldn’t drink pasteurised or homogenised milk, for some reason, so we had to buy raw milk. No idea what it is that’s different exactly, but while I was fine drinking raw milk, my body reacted to pasteurised or homogenised milk as if I were lactose intolerant. Not pleasant.
Since you couldn’t get raw milk in shops back then (at least not where we lived), we had to buy milk straight from a farm. Because the milk wasn’t homogenised, the cream would rise to the top, and even when shaken well, there would be little blobs of milk fat floating around in it.
I absolutely loathed it, and to this day cannot stand cream or milk fat in general. Never been happier than when I discovered as a teenager that I could drink normal milk again.
I remember seeing somewhere a while ago like those home birth, crystal mums being obsessed with raw milk. And a bunch of them were like getting it in really sketchy ways for cheap which is 100% gonna make them sick because according to them pasteurising it takes out all the good stuff. I’m pretty sure they were giving it to their babies too as an alternative to breast milk which is not right at all.
In rural Bavaria you can get it directly from the farmers (they have to label it with "heat before consuming" because of EU law) and it costs like 1 euro for a liter 😅
Erewhon is basically a store where celebrities shop just because they can and get cute pics with expensive smoothies

I'm from LA. Erewhon probably started with good intensions as a heathy grocery store with products you couldn't find elsewhere. It has always been expensive, but it wasn't until it became trendy that it turned into the official douche bag grocery spot.

What scares me the most is this kind of healthy store is unusual and that expensive in the US. Honestly, every decent city in France has multiple "Bio" groceries with such healthy products 5 times cheaper. I would be scared to live in the US and get forced to eat Walmart chemicals.

Loved this one guys. One point on the lavender lemonade: when Josh says "and it isn't fizzy"; lemonade in the US is almost never fizzy and is commonly just lemon juice, sugar, and water. What you call lemonade in the UK is closer to what we call something like Sprite or other lemon/lemon-lime sodas.

Cap Cai 雜菜 (still mixed vegetables) is Fukkienese stir fried vegetable that is actually mixed vegetables - popular across Southeast Asia - especially Indonesia. Instead of rice, you put in vegetables into your stir fry, and flour slurry to make it saucy in the end.

Never been to America, but after countless reviews I have seen I'm starting to believe Erewhon is a place where seasoning your food is illegal.
I suspect that there's a large group of health nuts that associate "clean" "fresh" flavours with healthy. What's the cleanest thing of all? Pure water. What does pure water taste like? Nothing. Hence the healthiest food shouldn't taste anything. Right? :P

@@nickywags0712 I'm not British nor American. I've found British snacks (biscuits and tea (drink) take the cake (pun intended) but America has better cuisine. I tried Taco Bell for the first time yesterday based on a RUclips video and it was nicer than I was guessing it would be (only similar food I've had is homemade mince with nachos) and I have had American foods that weren't sickly sweet.

Those 2 Asian noodle dishes were both made with Konjac noodles which are meant to be a healthier alternative to regular noodles. That's probably why they didn't taste good because it's diet food. Same with the "pizza".
i mean they could season it properly, but just like uncle roger said, rich people doesnt like flavor :p
there are so many asian dishes with Konjac noodles.. so that is no excuse.

I’ve had Chinese konjac snacks, didn’t know what they were, but found them fine. But they were sticky as heck.
@@johnnyhaze4605 the point is they are for people who are on a diet or want to be seen to be eating healthy. That's why the pizza wasn't good because there was no pizza dough and the noodles had no sauce or flavor because that's a lot of extra calories. To me diet food and health food in general just doesn't taste good because they are making too many compromises.

Given how expensive everything is, I wonder what the store does with produce that is not sold and is close to expire. Organic foods expire quicker and depending on foot traffic, I am pretty sure they won’t sell all their produce.
They run it over with a waste veggie oil powered steam roller so the poors and homeless can't have it.
I bet they use it in their fresh cooked foods and smoothies just before it's "sell by" date. That makes the most sense.

I always forget that the UK calls Sprite and other similar lemony sodas "lemonade". When they were like "it's like lemonade but it's not fizzy" I was like "what?" and then remembered. Here in America, "lemonade" is lemon juice (preferably fresh squeezed)+ water + sugar + ice(usually). Such a strange thing to me but I'm sure they think the same the other way around xD
