    After thirty years and 250,000 miles riding Harley Davidson motorcycles I made the switch to BMWs. Loved my HDs, terrific bikes, I just wanted a different riding experience. I do wished I would have hung on to one of them as I miss the Harley experience. This channel has rekindled my interest in reacquiring a Big Twin, and I'm off to look at a 2013 low-mile Road King in the morning. I'll keep all 3 'Beemers', and with the addition of FLHR, I'm thinking I'll have my bases covered.
    Thank you for helping me decide on the 103 ci GixerFoo - and yes, I'll be installing the Wood TW222 cam as per your suggestion.

Valve springs rattle if you lug it. Still uses very little oil. Would like to do better valve springs. It's running so good I don't want to mess with it. Oh screaming eagle cam plate and oil pump. V&H sent me a custom tune. Runs awesome. Just swapped out the big city thunder QQ baffles for the monster baffles. More logical for my bike as the QQ baffles do not fit the correct way in my duel exhaust. Going to have it Dino tuned for 400.00 and call it good. Also got the legend rear shocks and axeo front cartridges. OH MY GOD. Power and comfort. The bike I dreamed of getting the first time I bought it. There was wear on the cam tensioners. Also the Manufacturer put the lifters in backward, the oil slot was facing the wrong way on one head. Way to go, Harley Davidson.

It made 108 torque staying above 105 from 2200-4200, & made 98hp with K&N filter & Freedom 2-2 pipes. I ride a 2015 Road glide special. I bought it from Classic HD of Reading Pa. As the story goes...one of the owners had the bike built up for a "tail of the dragon" ride he wanted to go on. Beside a bunch of other upgrades, as the story goes, it has Andrews 57 cams installed. More apparent, it had a D&D 2 into 1 and a Performance machine freeflow intake...and I it was tuned (and I still have) the orange (outlawed) HD tuner it was tuned with originally and I also have a V&H fuelpak 3 that I bought to make adjustments to the tune when I made a change.
    The bike, as purchased, was insanely loud at first. I bought the quiet baffle from D&D but that only quieted in down so much. With the original baffle, it will easily peg the speedometer ...pulling hard all the way. With the quiet (louvered) baffle, it will hit 120 but it takes a bit longer ( I have a 3 mile strip of smooth highway I test it out on a few times per week in the summer)...
    My only complaint about the cam is that it's tougher to ride slow and I think it makes the bike loud (I've changed the pipes to a complete V&H dual system but that only decreased the power but it was still loud). With the perforated baffle it screams, it's plenty strong with the louvered baffle too...but it's still really loud.
    Is there a way to make a 103 quiet but pretty powerful and nice to ride at slower cruising speeds. I love my bikes power. It'll run with nearly anything but it's loud and a choppy when I'd like to go slow and quiet.

      Late reply but I’m hoping you read it. I eventually had the S&S 585 cam installed along with springs and goodies. My bike was really moving. That was done about 2 years ago. That motor went bad due to a failed primary chain that locked up and bent the crank and my primary case exploded. So on this particular bike it’s now getting a S&S T124 HC, looking forward to this one. But I purchased another bike with a 103 HO and I’m torn between Big Bore 107 Kit or actually doing another Cam installation. My builder wants me to got 574 this time. He’s also has a 107 Kit. But he said it’s up to me, he’s suggestion Cam and leaving my 103 alone since I was fortunate to come across a Low Mileage 103. It only had 1500 miles. The same is true of the TC 96. My ‘07 FXLR really came alive after I installed the FUELING 543 Cam Chest Kit. I’ve owned all 3 TC engines and really like the 96 for all around performance and balance when staying basically stock. The problem I have with SE cams is they use induction hardening on the lobes and I’d rather have a solid bar stock hardened bump stick for longevity.

I have S&S 551 cams in my 2013 ultra limited because I almost always ride with a passenger and with all three bags stuffed to capacity. It's not rev-happy but my TQ is over 100 before 2,000 RPMs and carries all the way out to over 4,000. I chose the S&S MR103 easy start cams, a .585 lift, the MR stands for medium range. It seems to be a good match. The advisor at S&S assured me I don't need to change anything like valve springs or port and polish the heads($950 for that!). The dynamometer showed 98hp at 110 lbs of torque, not bad. I think people overlook S&S due to them being so well known and probably think they are too old school and conservative. There R&D probably is top notch and are truly a proven company. Wood cams really run strong, all their cams pull really hard and gain over stock in every rpm range. A lot of independent shops that develop their own big bore packages include a Wood cam.

  • @robertkb64
    @robertkb64 5 месяцев назад

    Something to keep in mind: if you put serious mileage on your bike you may be better off planning on adding a big bore kit rather than cams alone as that provides a perfect opportunity to rebuild the engine since you’ll be in there anyway. If you have kids who are age-appropriate for doing this work it’s also a great bonding opportunity with your kids. Something I know many of us are often struggling with finding anyway.
    I live in AZ and run a power vision on what started life as a 96cu, so I’m acutely aware of the risk of cylinder head overheating issues ruining the temper on the aluminum, effectively requiring me to at least pull the heads to have them tested (if I could find inexpensive takeoff heads with automatic compression releases I have done that instead - and on that note if anyone is in at position to sell I’m actively interested).
    Due to some health issues I’ve had defer a lot of this work by a few years anyway (hence the necro-comment), allowing me to combine a lot of this work into a single build, otherwise my advice is to ensure you don’t overlook the fiddly bits as it’s the perfect time to combine cams with a new cam plate, upgraded pump, and trued crankshaft (and replace that useless compensator of course).
    As for which cam to pick: call Fuel Moto, talk to any of their techs (they have a bunch who are competent, explain your actual riding conditions and they’ll set you up with the right cam for you. They all understand this isn’t a just a numbers race but a matter of finding the right gear for you specifically

What I did instead was replacing the Camplate and the Oilpump with a Feuling high torque Camplate and a Feuling High pressure Oilpump + of’course Torrington needle bearings. Then I went with an S&S 575 Cam kit with new S&S Hydraulic lifters and adjustable S&S Pushrods, made my own external Top-vent in connection with a S&S Teardrop Air Cleaner Kit. It runs and pulls like a Train absolutely NO problems and that emphasizes using quality ALWAYS pays out…, I have 50 years of riding and building experience… NEVER EVER go with cheap Eastern Engine parts if you call yourself a biker/builder…then you can look yourself in the mirror with good conscience and pride 👍🏻🇺🇸✊🏻☠️😉

      That's normal for that cam, they come on real strong in that area. On the dyno graph it takes off hard in a climb with power production in that rpm range.

    Hey GixxerFoo, Im torn between the Woods & the S&S. I have a 14 SGS with Bassani true Dual, Arlen Ness Big Air sucker and an FP3 tuner. I love hot dogging it on the streets and I do a lot of freeway riding. Any recommendations between the 2? Also I noticed the S&S 570 cams are always followed by a letter. Which one is in this review? Thanks, keep up the good work!

      For me with a touring bike I would have to with the Wood TW-222, that cam's power is just so broad and it works very well with the heavier bikes. Best thing to do though is really watch your riding habits to make sure the cam you like makes power in the RPM range you ride.

      It pulls really well, but I just want to wake it up a little more. Looking at the TW 222 , and put some new shocks all the way around.

      Not that l am aware of, the bikes do as the name implies and they start very easily. They make great power and they don't kill the valve train. S&S does a lot of R&D and they stand behind what they advertise.

    So what is your thoughts on the andrews 57h cam? I was looking at the tw 555 and got suggested the 57h by a guy that use to dyno bike and by V&H as they said they had a lot of maps for them. One thing I like that the dyno guy told me about the 57h cam was it has a lot less valve train noise due to the it is ground on the back side of the lives.

    • @GixxerFoo
      @GixxerFoo  4 года назад +2

      Andrews actually makes the cams for Wood, but they are ground to Wood specs. Andrews 57H is a solid cam, you can't go wrong with Andrews or Wood. There are more maps out there for the Andrews as they seem to be much more well known.

    • @GixxerFoo
      @GixxerFoo  4 года назад +2

      For touring bikes the Wood TW-555 or the TW-777 are excellent choices, high torque and great horsepower. The TW-555 is a good choice if your keeping the heads stock and just running pipes, air cleaner and a good tune. Now TW-777 is a better option if you plan on doing some head work and bumping compression later on. Both cams are a straight bolt in so you won't have to worry about valve springs or anything else.

  • @dotlaj
    @dotlaj 4 года назад +3

    Like he said how are you going to ride your bike and what kind of bike do you have. That zipper would be great for a touring bike but maybe not for your dyna Street hooligan so do the resurgence before you pick how you tune and let someone sell you something you're not going to like. There are many who will try to get you to buy something that doesn't fit your style of riding so do your own research then you can talk to friends dealer or tuner and have some idea if they are telling you the truth.
