I would like to what else is out there for the after market. I love the bikes but do not like to do business with the dealer and do all the work my self 🤔 love the channel great content 😁
I have the tire shredder kit and went with the 585 cams…and to be 100% honest…even the guys at the dealership can’t believe how nasty that thing is. Once and a while you just get that perfect combo that makes a monster. Even my wife’s M8 114 stage IV can’t touch it!
I have a 2016 SGS that I bought new, had the Tire shredder kit installed with T-580s and a Screamin Eagle Cam Plate, I raced a guy on a 2021 SGS Arctic Blast M8 with a stage lV, Granted he has around 30 pounds on me, He even went back to HD shop asked them what the hell, they told him that my 2016 is crazy how it runs. I love my bike
Cams are the trick in this kit. Are the 585 the same cam as T-580s ? My kit is due to come in 8/19 after waiting 14 months. My gut says I need to change out cams in the kit. You guys use ThunderMax tuner?
Hey, may I ask if he made the suggestion on a different video about this exact bike or is it off this video ? I’m on the lookout to buy one and would appreciate it if you can share the suggestion. Thanks
On my 09 FXSTC I did a 103 big bore with new ACR heads and .030 head gasket SE 204 cams with 1.7 rockers. SE cam door and oil pump Changed the final gearing to a 30 tooth front and a 70 rear. Thing runs effin awesome very happy
The 103/96 is a rock solid engine despite what you read on the internet 😂 there’s a lot of guys that own shops that want you to think their garbage to sell you parts. Sure the early 88s have some issues but the twin cam 103/96 is pretty bulletproof
They really are solid engines, you hear of a 1,000 failures in a sea of millions of engines that have run for years without issue and the focus is on the failure.
@@GixxerFoo that Baxter guy is the worst, or Tman, they have some good info, but if you listen to them for 10 minutes you’d think every single Harley on the road was an oil leaking crank out of spec piece of crap and they’re really not 😂 the other problem is people run to the forums and make a “has anyone had this issue” post every time a part fails on a bike…Harley’s are very reliable quality motorcycles that are mass produced, anything that’s mass produced has a lemon here and there and has parts failure here and there, it’s nothing new.
Man I just bought a 2014 street bob and had no prior experience with Harley motors or Harley bikes.. been watching all you’re videos religiously before I bought the bike and still Watching now and I’ve learn so damn much from you gixxerfoo!!!! Just wanted to say thank you for these videos for us foos that don’t jack shit lol already did my first oil change on the bike and ready to swop out the tranny fluid and primary fluid! Again thank you! Got me wanting to do all my own work on the bike so save on the labor cost.. lol
I have a 2009 FatBob with 103 Stage 4 Race kit, 259e cams and just SE slip-on mufflers. Dyno at about 112/111. Very reliable, pulls like a beast and so happy.
That's awesome! Those factory headers are pretty dang good, they really don't get the credit they deserve. Some good slip-on exhaust work really well, those are very impressive numbers!

It's a mean kit, guy that works at my local dealer has one on his Road King. You pulled some damn good numbers with yours, what exhaust are you running?
I got the factory 103 HO on my soft tail, it backfired allot until got the Screaming eagle ignition module and I went to the Cobra Neighbor haters slip ons..Bike sounds amazeballs but I still get some back fires now and again..Its a Gold Hard candy Custom..Love this bike!
If you take it to over 120 + rwhp and torque ..get rid of the compensating sprocket and clutch and replace the compensating sprocket with a solid plain replacement sprocket and a Baker King Kong Clutch or it will all self destruct ..been there and done that twice ...the last time it twisted up the fly wheels .. Was not a pretty site . used the latest screamin' eagle compensating sprocket and screamin' eagle clutch plates that shattered in to gravel of pieces parts and parts pieces
4 years ago i purchased a 2014 Road King FLHR 103 HO absolutely love this bike. Since switching over to full synthetic in all 3 holes I’m achieving 46 mph religiously. I used to get 41-42 with detergent oil. I had a 2005 Road King Classic before this one. The rider and performance changes they did to the Rushmore series bikes are outstanding. 2013-2016 bikes were Rushmore. 2017 switched to the M-8.
Hello, Had the Woods TW222 cams installed in my 2013 dyna street bob. They made a huge difference. Needed to run the autotune in my fuelpac. Very happy. Thank you for your advice.....Gary
That Wood is just so hard to beat for me, I bet it feels like a new bike now! I am really happy to hear you're enjoying it! Let me know how it runs after you get your auto tune done and get it dialed in some more!
It’s all in the heads ! My 2015 RK I used my stock pistons and sent the heads to zippers performance for there mildest CNC port they offer called 1.8 for the slightly larger intake valves 700$. Put it back together with.030 head gasket and heads decked made it 10.25 comp. I already had Andrews 57h cams & powervision with cobra power port headers & SE street cannons. So this is the cheapest big gain set up you can get. & never even had to remove my cylinders. Had it dynoed with the powervision & ended up with 108 hp & 116 TQ & a very happy customer 👍 I did it with 14000 miles on it. Forgot to add I did it all myself including the cams a year earlier so no labor costs
Doing it yourself is the way to go! That's really impressive numbers, the twin cam engines really respond well to compression. You made some big power on the cheap, Zippers does really good work too. What was the turn around time sending your heads out?
www.bigboyzheadporting.com/TwinCamComp.htm Wanted to add this link that helped me figure everything out as for what I wanted to accomplish. That plus a lot of other research on various Harley forums
Very true harleys absolutely make there power in the heads, but those heads need the right supporting parts to be able to make that power. They cant do it alone
Have a 103 Heritage dyna tuned. Appreciate the information of the other options available and estimated cost. My 3rd video watching, 3 is a charm: subscribed. :)
@@GixxerFoo I agree. Mine's a '99 and carburated; Timken is in there. It could stand some more power though. Right now it has a k&n air filter, re-jetted stock CV carb and true duals with some CVO 110 slip-ons. Runs solid with over 50K miles. Subbed..
Many thanks! The 103 had all the improvements from over the years, the numbers on paper don't look much different than the 96. But if you ride one you'll feel the difference immediately.
Thanks GixxerFoo straight up advice I just got a 2015 RG with only 6000 miles on it and I'm looking at giving it some more power trouble being down here in NZ parts are way more expensive. Thanks again from NZ
I appreciate you watching and your support! I bet you got some beautiful riding country around there, does it already have the stage 1 done or is it still stock?
@@GixxerFoo Thanks Brother yes we do have some great ride's down here but usually if you ride far enough there's always somewhere great to ride. My RG has Monster Round slip-ons I'm not sure apart from that it was imported from the States. All the best brother
The 103 is a very nice motor, it performs very well in the Street Bob. I was impressed with the one I rode that had a 103, it was cammed and it pulled hard out of the hole.
Thank you for clearing that up, the most explanatory video on the 103's highly appreciated, On my 2015 Road glide 103 I went to the tire shredder kit the 110 it's like holding onto a bull so impressive so exciting to ride, I don't know I could be wrong but I feel like my bike has more balls than the 114 117 and even some 128 LOL am I wrong, my torque is 123 at the rear utilizing screaming eagle super pro tuner, using Vance & Hines headers and cross pipe.. on the clutch running the scorpion clutch
You are welcome! I wouldn't doubt it pulls harder than bigger inch motors, you've got a the right tuner and a good exhaust setup! That makes a huge difference, the salesman at my local dealer had the tire shredder on his Road King and it hauled ass! He was in his 70's and a real hardcore rider, he went out with a heart attack riding home one day.
@@GixxerFoo wow what a way to go well God bless his family and Godspeed to him!! Really appreciate all your videos. Great information second-to-none thanks!!
I bought the 2015 Road Glide Special out here in Cali and with the smog is was a DOG! Ran hotter than hell, didn't get 200 miles on a tank and had no throttle in 5th & 6th gears. Purchased the Screaming Eagle race tuner. Installed a Roland Sands intake and Reinhart slip ons'. Took the stock exhaust off, emptied out the catalytic converter chamber and reinstalled it. Had to take it to Arizona to have it dyno tuned. Like a brand new bike. 92 hp with 113 torque. Runs way cooler, 240 degrees when it's 100 degrees outside. I get 230 to 240 miles on a six gallon tank. And of course, it's not the fastest bike but nobody leaves me in the dust. This thing is a rocket ship recliner. These days Harley is begging me to trade this in on the M8. Thing is how do I take the Cali smog off this thing and pump it up like every other Harley I've owned? The stage kits are crap and full of problems. These things eat, breath and fart. You improve this on the Harley it's like you have a brand new bike.
I ordered from Harley-Davidson in 2013 the new cases the screaming eagle 4.070 Pistons jugs the CNC heads and the 4 3/8 crankshaft. I added fueling cam plate oil pump and lifters I added Andrews 67g cams I have the crank trued and welded I had the jugs done and my bike makes 126 horsepower at the back wheel and 118 ft lb of torque I changed the primary to the screaming eagle 315 and she'll do 145 comfortably with the original five speed this is the engine I put in my 01 road glide to replace the 88
That's a very nice engine you built! Andrews makes some awesome cams for Harleys, great company and they also grind cams for many others as well. You've got some serious power on that bike, I bet it's a blast to ride!
@@GixxerFoo one of the stupidest engines I've ever built the bike doesn't weigh anything does 10 second quarters I only weigh 160 lb myself total idiocy thanks for noticing.
Great information! I have a 2012 Roadglide with the 103. The kits, like you said unless you go all the way are less than impressive. Currently i have stage 1 with 2 into 1 exhaust and SE street tuner. I’m looking to upgrade with a Thundermax ECM, and a woods Tw-222 cams. This should net me about 97-100 hp right?
Still got the 103 stage 4 on the cabinet,,, tuner is vance and hines,, configuration online,,, i ve got the tts but there no dyno program to do the tuner,, but still pulling hard
Love your channel and your videos. Looking to upgrade to an Ultra Limited. I’ve noticed that the ‘14 models are quite a bit cheaper than the rest of the Rushmore bikes. Is there a reason and what should I look for?
103 is solid and can make decent power while maintaining longevity I put a 103 kit on my 07 wide glide 54k miles only thing that shit the bed was my fuel pump at 50k not a big deal to replace though
When I bought my 2013 Road King off the showroom floor it had a stage 3 kit and an aftermarket exhaust from the dealership in Victoria, BC. It would snap my head back when I twisted the throttle on the freeway. Does the stage 3 kit mean it has 110" cylinders? I need to buy rings for the rebuild, what size rings would they be? Thanks for the vid!
On the 103 there were so many different variations of the stage 3 kit at that time it would be hard to tell without tearing the bike down measuring the bore. Since it was done by a dealer you can have your Vin number run at a dealer and they will be able to tell you everything done at a dealer on that bike. At that time there were stage 3 110 jug kits but also high compression stage 3 kits with cams too.
@@GixxerFoo thanks, the dealership is out of business. I had a wreck several years ago and it's slow going getting all the parts together that were messed up, I'm still saving up and looking for a frame. I have the engine torn down, ready to put it in S&S cases. What would the bore be for the 103 and 110 respectively? The dealership is elusive about the answers (I think they want me to just buy a bike from them, but I have an '83 sportster that will do for now.)
What about performance upgrades for cvo 103 like thiner head gasket for higher compression and Cam upgrade .what cams would you recommend not looking to go with se more aftermarket looking for performance and a little chop. Thx. Love your videos
The only way to know exactly what cam set is in there is to pull the cams out, but if you just want to know if it's stock or not there is a way. You would need a tuner that allows you to view the intake valve open/close value. The open and closing values for the stock 103HO cams are 02 BTDC and 30 ABDC (before top dead center and after bottom dead center) this tells the ECM when to read the MAP sensor. If those values differ than the cams are likely not stock, that's the best way I know give you an idea if they are stock or not without pulling the cams.
@@GixxerFoo you are the official H-D savant!! I appreciate the feedback and the informative videos when making hard cash errand decisions when upgrading my H-D.
I'm confused. Did you buy this used or brand new ? Did they use 2 different cams for that year and model because I have the same bike (bought it brand new)
@@gaknskk I bought mine new as well, the only power upgrade I’ve done so far was have the Sceaming Eagle ventilator elite installed. To compliment my Rhinehart slip on’s.
I bought a used 14 SGS 103 and i have Boneshakers/ V&H true dual headers/ SE intake had it dyno and i got 104ft & 84HP. but i’m looking at getting the tire shredder kit installed at dealer over the winter but all in out the door is about 4gs $$$ pretty penny. What’s y’all take on it. Thanks ride safe
I also have a 14 SGS 103 with Stage 1 upgrades. Just paid her off, and have ridden her for 55K miles so far. I am thinking of doing the same kit you are.
I know this post is old but here is my question. 2013 Tri Glide. Will be installing woods 222 cam. S&S High volume oil pump and cam plate with S&S lifters with adjustable pushrods. DK customs 606 high flow breather with factory cat deleted headers and gutted VH pipes. What numbers should I expect to see out of this setup? Power vision tuner. Is there a better woods cam for this setup? Trying to stay with drop in cam setup while gaining torque along with some top end speed. Tavel in the mountains and out west pulling a trailer at times. Will be making the Sturgis run next year pulling trailer. Trying to also keep a reasonable fuel milage.
Wood 222 is going to be the best all around bolt in for your setup, that cam really excels in heavy bikes with the torque curve and top end power. With a catless factory head pipe and V&H mufflers and a power vision canned tune for the setup you should land around 90 to 95 horsepower and north of 100 foot pounds of torque.
i enjoy my Twincam 96 the way it is , yes it's a noisy engine but all Harley engines got some noise . You just need to change the oil every 2000 miles and use a good quality oil and filter. Don't be afraid to use a 60 weight full Synthetic oil for extreme hot temperatures.
I just bought a 2013 softail slim with a 103.. it has 85k miles on it.. I figured Id do a 110 kit, cams, and cnc'ed heads. I figired a cam plate, true and weld flywheels and timken conversion also. But Im wondering, will it be ok to do this without actually rebuilding the crank ?
If you plan to go that far with the bike and the mileage that it has on the current lower end I would go ahead and do the crank. That's a lot of miles down on the bottom end, planning on a cam plate you'd likely find the run out on the crank is too high. You'll need run out ideally at .003 or less with a billet race cam plate.
I’m considering getting a new 1200ns, FXDL with a 103, and a softail S with a 103. What would be your pick? I’m leaning towards the Dyna but the 1200 is new. However for long Texas straightaways the extra power might help.
They are really great bikes in their own respects, I might be a little biased cause I really like the Dyna Low Rider. A Softail Slim is great riding bike but it does sit very low to the ground and doesn't have much cornering clearance. The 1200 is a fun bike, I have a 2016 1200 custom and my wife rides a 2017 Sportster 48. But if you're running down long highways it's gonna get real small after a while, I'd say the Dyna would would be my pick. The Low Rider is like a big Sportster, it has room to stretch out and it's a lighter big twin but it will still ride good down the highway.
I’ve been riding a TC 88 for 19 years. Seems like back in the day when I bought the bike Harley-Davidson offered a kit that could take the TC 88 to 113. Any idea how that measures up?
Brad I bought a new ‘02 ElectraGlide and at that time they only offered a 95 kit, which I had the dealer put on .. the SE models in ‘04 had 103s but I don’t believe that was offered until a few years later
Good information well presented. I’m currently looking to get my first ever Harley and I’m looking at a 2015 ultra limited with the 103 engine only concern the one I seen at a good price had 30,000miles on it, what would your views be on that mileage ? Or should I go newer and get the 107 or 114 m8 Thanks in advance any help would be appreciated
I like the late model twin cams since that's where they got it right in my opinion. Now the early M8's up to 2020 have some issues with oil sumping and piston oil jet coolers coming loose. With that twin cam at 30K I would just have the tensioners checked and make sure they are still in good shape. With they hydraulics they can last up to 50K miles, but better safe than sorry.
@@GixxerFoo thanks for the reply and info much appreciated. Are these 103 Rushmore’s engines good for high miles then? I’m not a fan of the sound on the new m8s plus the stories put me off Aswell on then 107,114’s. It’s more for just long rides and slow riding not for speed at all
@@boylejohnstone1 on a different note my 103 lost a can tensioner and wiped out the motor with 26,000 miles. My 2017 m8 now has 76,400 miles on it with only oil changes and a stator. My 82 shovel swallowed a valve at 29,000 miles......my 98EVO is still running along with 102,000. I work on 5 M8s that i have vented heads to atmosphere like i have done with every Harley from 76 till 2020. M8s we do run 4 dots low on oil stick. And vent crankcase to atmosphere ( 8 bucks to do not 100+) So i think the m8:engineers also run too much oil. Maybe why you dont see many softtails stumpping...🤣🤣🏝
I got a 2016 heritage softail with 103HO. It’s got more than enough power for me. I don’t ride a harley to be fast anyway. I just never had a desire to mod engine and compromise the reliability to be faster. That 103HO will do anything I ask it to do whether it’s climbing a mountain or crossing the country. Harley got it right with the 103HO and I’m gonna leave it alone.
Excellent information! In my opinion, best knowledge about Harley-Davidson engines in the last three decades. A quick question. I am considering buying a Tri Glide. Choice between a 2017 or newer M8 or going back a few years earlier to a 103. It looks like upgrading a 103 to get some more torque is a great option. Problem is I could get a 2017 used for only $1,000 more. I'm not a speed freak, I'm just concerned about the big three wheeler moving when I need it to. What would you do and why? Thanks for any reply
Thank you! The trikes really needed the extra power of the 107 and 114 M8's, but the 103 does very well and a cam swap will really get the horsepower and torque where it needs to be to really pull a trike. Now the 2017 M8 had oil sumping and oil pump issues, I would take the VIN to a dealer and see if it had any warranty work done. 2017 engines with the original oil pump design had the issues and Harley replaced those with a newer designed unit under warranty. If you are able to verify that I would go with the M8. But the twin cam 103 is tried and true, they got the issues with the twin cam worked out on the 103 and of course they changed over to M8 shortly after. My opinion is the 103 is less likely to have an issue vs. the 2017 M8 which was the first year of that motor, I've had some bad experience with the first years but that's just me.
I just bought a 2010 Ultra Classic 103 and it's leaking a few drops of oil every day. Oil and trans fluid are fine. It looks like it's coming from where the pan bolts onto the bottom of the motor. This is my first Harley. Any ideas where it's coming from? Do they have a reputation for leaks?
If I go for the 110 package can the stock crankshaft handle the power? Seams to me I might as well go for the 120 st crate motor??? Love your videos keep them coming!!!
If you keep it mild and don't beat on it the stock crank will be alright, they are pressed cranks so biggest thing is just not lugging the motor. I would get at 120R before the ST, the ST is the same engine as the R but the ST has a milder cam.
I have a Two 103 touring bikes..2015 RK, 2016 SG Special....love them. I also have a 2019 RK Special and a 2019 Fat boy with 114 M8s. Yes the M8 have more power but I still love my Twin Cams. Let's face it HD has to make engine mods. Other than paint how can a HD be improved. One of my Twin Cams has 78k miles and she runs like a dream. The M8 blow oil smoke sometimes and you definitely smell oil burning on start up. Most of my family think the engine sucks. Only because HD has not come clean about this engine. First the oil migration to the primary and now HD is on their third oil pump improvement....not to exclude the new M8 oil filter they rolled out....why? My two M8 only have 6300k miles between them so time will tell. They both are getting the new SS came plate and oil pump in Oct 2020 when I have time to replace them.
Have you had your M8's in for all the updates? I saw they started drilling the case on the primary side and putting a vent/return tube in there. Seems like something they would of caught in development. I've talked to several people that came from a TC to an M8 and they said the same thing.
Old video but...picking the wife up a Softail Tuesday with a 103. 6600 miles on it. How much do I need to worry about the cam chain tensioners? I feel like with the 96 people don't worry about it but with the 103 they do? Did Harley go backwards with this?
A little off topic, but what is your opinion on the stock CVO 110 Twin Cam, not an aftermarket 110 kit? I have been reading horror stories on some online forums about the lifters going out. The one I just bought has 41,000 miles, kind of a lot for a bike and I am hoping that any issues the 110 has have already happened and been corrected. What are your thoughts? Thanks for the great videos.
I heard of that happening but it was kinda like the cam chain tensioner in the 88. It didn't happen to every bike out there and depends who you talk to it was maintenance related. Personally l wouldn't be too worried about myself.
@@GixxerFoo i have a slim with the h o 103, stock, and a flht 88, with 95 kit, and a bolt in cam. So thank you for all the twin cam videos. Very helpful
I have an original 88 2005 RK that was build by the previous owner to a 103 Screaming Eagle(old). He put a Screaming Eagle 6 speed transmission. Cams seem original like on the 88s. He did put a SE intake.I have replaced the cam plate with a Feuling cam plate with hidraulic tensioners and new larger fuel pump. So the engine is far from original. Question is: When I will need to rebuild the top end, with what can I replace it with? I don't want to go back to 88 and I don't want to bore out the cylinders . Can I use something bolt on? Cheers! P.S. I am not a mechanic and english is not my first language :)
Hi, a little off-topic question (but maybe not so much). Based on your I see deep knowledge what do you think about the flywheels scissoring; on the late TC103s it's still an issue to be concerned of? Especially if hopped-up or brought to 110 I tend not to do clutch drops or lug the engine, on the contrary, I like to wind it up when the road is right
It hasn't seemed to be wide spread from what l've seen. When it does happen it's usually someone waaaaay overbuilding an engine and riding it extremely hard. There are a lot of Twin Cams out there with with well over 100 horsepower reliably.
When bigger cylinders and higher compression pistons are added to the 103, would these things effect the dependability of the bottom end. Crank, bearings etc.? Thanks, I enjoy learning any new information you may impart upon me.
It's always a possibility but a lot of that depends on how hard you are on the motor. If you just ride it and not beat on it constantly, take good care of it, it can be quite reliable.
If you are looking to re-build an engine with the goal of power, it'd be better to score a 110 engine and use the 117 'drop-in' cylinders as the heads are a much better casting. Get the heads fitted with bigger valves and port them and your numbers can be over 140 in torque and horsepower. If it is a rubber mount bike though you will have to upgrade the engine mounts in order to stop the dreaded 'death-wobble'.
I've heard of the death wobble and know some guys who had monster S&S Dyna Engine builds that experienced it. There are after market stabilizer links for the engine mounts out there and they do wonders!
@@GixxerFoo Yes, but stabilisers are not enough when you get up to high power levels - you need different mounts. I use ones from Big Bear Performance as they offer a little sideways adjustment on the front mount that enables you to get the wheels aligned properly. My Sporty's mounts were old and buggered so I fitted ones from Drag Spec as they are firmer and the handling on my Sporty is great now. If you were to see my bikes you would be in awe as so much is changed or altered..... my brother in law says it's easier to remember what parts I haven't changed, modified or re-engineered. I have had the bikes 11 years now and it is a constantly evolving situation. My Dyna has had over 3250 spent on it including original purchase price (new) and the Sporty about £10k but that one was second hand.....

That Stage 3 setup makes really good power over stock. The stage 4 is a high rpm kit, the stage 3 keeps the power in the middle. Depends what rpm range you're looking to ride in mostly.
If any one is actually serious and can't wait ..I have a complete 110 top end I' all take half price for ..itvhas exactly 30 miles on itvi put on myself ..and pulled the while top endvoff cams and throttle body pistons cylinders and heads injectors the works all you will ever need to uP grade a 103 to the 2017 Dyna S 110 cubic inchthat make 90 HP to the tire and a 100 gt lbs torque
The 103 during the 88inch era was only in the Screamin Eagle CVO bikes. The replacement motor for the CVO was the TC 110 when the 103 made it into standard production of all models. But at that time the 103 you're talking about isn't exactly the same as 2009 103. This 2004 103 shares much more with the 88 in that time period.
Great video thanks, I would like your opinion. I have 2014 Limited with the Daytona blue i only added that cause it was the only reason i traded up. My wife fell in love with it and without her i would not be on two wheels. But i digress i have the stage 1 with full exhaust and V&H mufflers. Question is i want more TQ and I don't want the high rpm's to get HP Which 110 kit would be best if at all. I do have 55000 miles? Thanks
You could go with a new set of cams if your targeting low to mid range torque, but if you're interested in a 110 I would go with the stage 3. It doesn't push the power all the way to the top of the rev range like the stage 4. The stage 3 110 kit produces just under 110 ftlbs of torque at only 2500 rpm.
You mentioned that if you do a Stage 3 high compression kit, it would be a good idea to replace the jugs. Why is that? My mechanic disagreed and said that the existing jugs can be honed, cleaned up and re-used. Said that the kit is meant to be used with existing jugs. This may be a good option for me and my 103 Street Glide given that I'm running the Feuling 574 cams. That said, it's supposed to be a cost-effective upgrade. That's not the case if I have to get new jugs...Might as well go Stage 4. Thoughts?
It just depends how many miles are on your cylinders and what kind of shape they are in. Your mechanic is correct that the cylinders can be reused, if they measure out within spec to be cleaned up and honed the rings will fit properly. If the cylinders are too worn they would have to be replaced with new ones. For the purpose of the video I mentioned purchasing new cylinders assuming a twin cam engine with high miles and doing a refresh. Twin Cam cylinders are relatively cheap but if you did need new cylinders the stage 4 would likely be more cost effective.
@@GixxerFoo I agree. I feel like when jugs get involved, I would be better off stepping it up. I've got less than 10,000 miles on my jugs, so I think I'm good.
You shouldn't have any issues then with the jugs at that mileage. A good hone job and the there shouldn't be any issue getting the piston rings fitted.
@@GixxerFoo What cam would you recommend as a replacement for 259e cam in the Stage 4/5 Tire Shredder kit? The Stage 4 Tire Shredder kit comes with 10.2:1 pistons. Would you recommend the Wood 555 or 777?
I have a 2012 electra glide. All i did was put in a decatted stock header pipe, cobra 909 uppercut slip on mufflers, big sucker air cleaner, dyno tune and andrews 57h cam. Makes 97hp 107tq. Sold
Those factory headers really don't get the credit they deserve, they are really pretty damn good. Once you get that cat out and add a good slip on like you did.
Those are fun bikes to ride! Ducati just has that Italian refinement, they are unique in the feel and ride like the Harley. You ride any Japenese bike and they all feel about the same.
Thanks for your great videos! They are super helpful without being overly technical. I recently bought a 2016 Fat Bob that was almost new, only 230 miles on it. It has the 103 HO engine. I put about 2500 miles on it before winter shut me down. I am looking to give it some performance upgrades over the winter as it is still completely stock. What would you do if it was your bike and you had a winter to do it? If you need a budget let’s say $7500. I am looking to do the work myself so it can all go for parts. I am looking at a 2-1 exhaust system like the V&H Pro Pipe, and a set of Wood TW-222 cams, S&S cam plate and high volume oil pump (mostly based on your video- thanks!), and a Powervision tuner (from your video too-thanks!). So far all I’ve purchased is a K&N RK-3934 air intake system which I replumbed the breathers on to keep oil and hot gas out of my intake (also based on another of your videos- thanks again!). What else should I do to gain some power or make it run better without replacing the jugs or bumping up the displacement? What kind of a performance increase could I potentially get if I were to have my heads ported and polished or even replaced? Not scared to spend the money as long as I get something in return. Thanks again for your great videos I watch all of them. Hope you can respond, your opinions would be most helpful! Merry Christmas!
Thank you, I appreciate it! Really the biggest bang for the buck is the cam, and from there a big bore kit. Head porting will help some, but not any major gains for the money spent without upping the compression.
Thanks for the response, sounds like I am at least on the right track. I am working my way through your twin cam videos. I got some time to figure out what I want before I start ordering parts. Now looking at the cost of bumping up to 110” with the Fuelmoto kit (yep, based on another one of your videos) and now I’m not so sure I wanna keep her at 103”! Thanks again for the videos, hope you have a great Christmas!
That'll work for a first bike, aye? I'm 50...never rode...taking safety classes (as many as possible!); all my cars have been stick shift. Looking at a Dyna wide glide. Thoughts?
The safety course will teach you quite a bit and get you comfortable on a bike. I had my endorsement at 14 and rode for 20 years on the street without having to take class. I took a beginner class with my wife, learned a lot and it was great experience.
Andrews makes some really solid cams. That's a really popular cam for the twin cam, l like the power curve on it. They also give them a nice lope at idle.
@@GixxerFoo .....thanks for responding back man. My 2003 cvo road king is getting engine work now, andrews 57h, wiseco forgef high comp pistons & rings, pushrods lifters cnc ported heads, 10 over bore and hone....2 into 1 bassani stainless, s&s stealth air filter, power commander 5..... i wanted a power vision, but my mechanic suggested pc5....is that good enough for my build?...
Dang that thing is gonna scream with all that work. Compression, porting and cams is a huge gain for.a twin cam. Nothing wrong with PC5 at all, it will work really well for your build.
I should have read a LOT more about the 88 because I found a decent LR with the 88 with everything I wanted on it---low mileage, rack/bags/shield/engine guard/back rest/ and good paint and not bad for rust. It has been one problem after another. Over and over , thousands spent just to get it running AND haven't even't replaced the chain tensioners yet. Such a disappointment. SO, spend some extra money and buy a late model 96 or the 103. Even a nice 88 with low mileage COULD be a real POS.
Then 88's were really hit and miss, some were flawless and others had all the known issues. The later year 88's weren't too bad but the 96 had the issues corrected by then.
Great videos! Keep doing a great job. On a 2011 TwinCam 96B (Softail Fatboy) what's the highest I can go? 110, 114, 117? Will the new 131 crate engine fit? Thank you.
For a 96 you can do a 103 kit through Screamin Eagle. Aftermarket kits you can bolt on up around 124 inch. Technically the 110 kit would work on a 96 through Screamin Eagle but it wouldn't be warranties. The 131 engine is a M8, it wouldn't bolt into your bike but with some creative fabrication it could be done.
I have the 110 kit (still in boxes) you said to stay away from. Can I change any of the components (heads, cams, pistons) to make it work better? Purchased it from a guy that sold his bike before he had it installed. Paid $800 for it and not sure if I should cut my loses or try upgrading the kit.
I think that depends on what the motor condition looks like. Ask the seller questions. Test it. If you think its not worth the price, still get it, but only if you are able to get it for what its worth.
So, I have a 2016 Road Glide 103 twin cooled. Does that mean that "going all out" for me would be the kit with the CVO heads because I can't use a tire shredder kit?
For that bike you can safely up the compression, the heads aren't bad on the CVO model. With them being water cooled l would go the route of upping the compression with some good cams.
The water cooled heads they really don't have a lot of offerings for those for some reason. But a adding high compression pistons will give you a big boost.
I have a twin cooled 2016 103”, and want to do a 110” upgrade. What’s your opinion about switching to gear drive cams? Also you mentioned in another video about the CVO 110” that it had a SE compensating sprocket. Do you know if my 103” 2016 FLTRU Mount Rushmore has the upgraded sprocket, and if it doesn’t do you suggest upgrading to one? Thanks for your advice.
I really like the gear drive systems and they are great for the 88's with spring tensioners. The gear drive have more accurate timing but they depend on the main shaft run out being a max of .003. Not only for installation but throughout it's life cycle, if it's any more than that you'll need a new crank or stay with the chain system. The late model bikes like yours have done great with the hydraulic tensioner system, it just need to be inspected about every 50k to be safe. The 103's do have the stock compensator, but they haven't failed like they did on the 96. Personally I wouldn't change it unless I was having a problem. Just don't go back with OEM if you have a failure, go with the Screamin Eagle.
Would you choose a high compression kit or go with the 110 big bore kit?

That sounds like an absolute screamer, I bet you surprise some guys with their new M8's!
The 103 is a great engine , just some a few internal upgrades and you’ll be rolling for many a mile

I have the 103 from 2015, and I put the tire shredder kit in it. It tops at 117 horsepower and 127 foot pounds of torque.
I gotta say that Tire Shredder Kit is bad ass, it's really impressive with a good exhaust and tune.

Good background info on the 103. I run a TC88 but I like that 103 for sure.

Very nice high torque motor, the displacement really improved those motors over the 96.
My question is how do I find out if my 2016 Street Glide Special 103 has H.O stock cams? Thanks for all the informative information and videos

@@GixxerFoo Thank you brother, your channel is a wealth of knowledge. It is great to see someone with the passion you have for what you do.
i enjoy my Twincam 96 the way it is , yes it's a noisy engine but all Harley engines got some noise .
I love my 103!
Or should I go newer and get the 107 or 114 m8
Thanks in advance any help would be appreciated
Good video...good explanation. THANKS!!
Glad it was helpful! I appreciate you watching and the support!
Thank you redirecting me back to this vid
Not a problem, l have one on cams too for all the different Twin Cam engines.
@@GixxerFoo i have a slim with the h o 103, stock, and a flht 88, with 95 kit, and a bolt in cam. So thank you for all the twin cam videos. Very helpful
Not a problem at all! Glad they helped you out!
If it's a 103 it's likely got the stroker crank, so a new 95 inch top end kit to freshen it up would work great.
@@GixxerFoo thank you so much!
Hey anytime!
Hi, a little off-topic question (but maybe not so much).
Based on your I see deep knowledge what do you think about the flywheels scissoring; on the late TC103s it's still an issue to be concerned of?
Especially if hopped-up or brought to 110
I tend not to do clutch drops or lug the engine, on the contrary, I like to wind it up when the road is right
It hasn't seemed to be wide spread from what l've seen. When it does happen it's usually someone waaaaay overbuilding an engine and riding it extremely hard. There are a lot of Twin Cams out there with with well over 100 horsepower reliably.
@@GixxerFoo Thank you very much! Great channel you have and you are very interactive
Not a problem at all! We definitely appreciate your support over here!
Thinking of getting a 103 breakout..
I love the Twin Cam Breakouts, the look way better than the M8 models.

Quick question, are the 103 heads a direct bolt on to the twin Cam 88
They actually will bolt on and they are much more efficient. You will however have to use the late model intake flanges.

You're looking to convert a 103 to a 110?
@@GixxerFoo yes 103 to a 110
That Stage 3 setup makes really good power over stock.
103 was not released in 09 because my Electra glide CVO came with A screaming eagle 103 in 2004 this is the grandfather of the now street glide
Michael Crowley you're right I also have a 2004 Screamin Eagle Electra Glide he was wrong on his dates
Did the 2008 police bikes have a 103?
Yes the police bikes had the 103 in 2008, the police bikes got that 103 years before it was even an option on production bikes.
Nice video. Can you give a quick summary on whether these kits apply to the 96?
I have another video on the 96, it covers the upgraded that will work for that motor. m.ruclips.net/video/vYkMlmX5AXo/видео.html
@@GixxerFoo thank you
You mentioned that if you do a Stage 3 high compression kit, it would be a good idea to replace the jugs.

I took a beginner class with my wife, learned a lot and it was great experience.
would it be feasible to replace the EFS with a carb on a stage 4?
Love the twin cam engine....do you like the andrews 57H cams for those engines?
Did he say why he didn't go with the Power Vision?
Been waiting 12 months for the 110 tire shredder kit. Undisclosed Parts are missing.
How about video on how to swap out our twin cam for M8 say 135cid
If a cylinder kit from 103 to 110 is chosen, does it not also require a change of cylinder heads, for larger ones?
Can anything be done to save the 110 kit with the CVO heads?
I'm not sure what you mean?
I have the 110 kit (still in boxes) you said to stay away from. Can I change any of the components (heads, cams, pistons) to make it work better? Purchased it from a guy that sold his bike before he had it installed. Paid $800 for it and not sure if I should cut my loses or try upgrading the kit.
I guess it was a wasted $800.
I wanted to know would it be a good buy for 2014 street glide 103 with 64K miles on it? All I know is that it has a d&d 2 into 1 exhaust.
I think that depends on what the motor condition looks like. Ask the seller questions. Test it. If you think its not worth the price, still get it, but only if you are able to get it for what its worth.
What's your Honest Opinion on the Hammer Kits for the Sportster?
They are absolutely second to none, those are some of best power you can buy out there for a Sportster.
I’m seriously considering putting a complete 103 in my 2007 street glide… got any recommendations that won’t break the bank?!
@@GixxerFoo So keep it a 103 and just improve the airflow/compression.
What cam would you suggest if I was gonna change out my 255 e in my 2007 cvo screaming eagle 110
