Absolutely agree. Unfortunately there are a lot of people (cough, middle aged white men) in the world (cough, USA) who absolutely need a huge over the top truck (cough, because they’re ashamed of their true sexuality and they think owning a truck somehow confirms that they’re heterosexual).
That's what I think when I see any electric SUV tbh. We don't even need to have private cars at all. When most journeys in cars are undertaken by one person even an Ioniq 5 seems like a waste of batteries next to the Microlino.
If it convinces a decent amount of people that EVs are cool I think it’s worth it. I think of it like a halo car for a certain type of American, most won’t get it but they might be more willing to buy another ev because this exists.
Well at 4 tons you can't drive that on a standard British license (unless your license is a few decades old). You'll need to get a different categorgy of license. That's true in the uk and the eu. So at least Hummer drivers should be better than average, just because they need more advanced driving licenses.
But as a large 4x4 pickup, you can't drive to the same speed limits as cars in the UK. It will be limited to 50mph on a country road, 60mph on dual-carriageways and only on the motorway will you legally be allowed to hit 70mph.
When you pointed out the windscreen I was nodding. I sat in a Hummer 2 ONCE in a dealership and it was the silliest thing I've ever sat in. You can't see anything. It's like you're in a tank peering out of a tiny slot window. 0-60 in 3-ish seconds? WHAT?! People are gonna DIE! ... and it's not going to be the rich jerk who buys that kind of thing... :c
It's a point that is often lost on these "ridiculous" cars and Jack is right to say that this will be a bedroom poster type car. Will it save the world today? Yeah.. Nahhh, but what it will do is inspire kids to get into engineering and they will be the ones working on the cars that really will be making a difference in 10 - 20 years. Cheers for the vid.
At over 4000kg it is useless on the European market. You can't drive it with a normal driving license in most European countries since that limits you to 3500kg.
Big deal GM Ultium platform is just a bunch of batteries in a box. Must have took 100s of engineers a decade to figure that one out or the marketing department 5 minutes.
I think this really illustrates why cars like the Aptera are so great. There is a sexiness to being future forward and when you design for extreme efficiency, you automatically get that. This Hummer is just another in a long line of vehicles designed to waste everyone's time, money and resources.
We need more, many, many, many more destination chargers. Workplaces need vehicle chargers. The corner store needs vehicle chargers. Robert, can you please keep lobbying governments to further this, or do our dreams stall? ❤️🇦🇺
If the laws of physics didn't apply to batteries and I could have 212kWh in my MINI electric, I would be able to travel........ 1140 miles on a charge! This is based on my real world average of 250km (155 miles) over 2 years of ownership. Of course in the real world, towing a massive trailer full of batteries would do wonders for the economy, and not in a good way :) I still want a Hummer though ;) Nice review as always Jack.

3:50 "It's a halo car" I've heard the luxury Celestiq described as a halo car. The Hummer EV might play a similar reputation-building role for off-roading enthusiasts who never before had aspirations to own an EV. But I think the more important "halo-like" effect is not external reputation, but the great opportunity for GM engineers to design something that pushes the limits. Many of its innovations will trickle down to mass-market vehicles. One more thing to watch out for is whether some Hummer-EV--derived technology trickles up to major military contracts. GM recently reestablished a GM Defense division, and already has won an initial contract to build 650 Infantry Squad Vehicles based on the Chevy Colorado pickup truck. If the world's military establishments decide it is time to start going carbon zero, GM might want to play a role in supplying vehicles for that transition, and what its engineers learned from the Hummer may put them in a good position for that.
If you just see the design, without any specs nor size comparison, it looks sexy. But, once you actually look at the data sheet, like efficiency, weight, comparable low storage, it just makes you puke.
Finally a vehicle with a big enough battery to actually run something, like your house. Something to tow with. Should get the boat to the lake OK. A vehicle for those of us who want maximum kilowatts per person per day. More Nuke plants and more baseload available so that we can charge a 200Kw battery over night, every night, for say $0.10 per Kw. Bed's to short to be a work truck. So F-150evs for the crew, but this is a good boss/business owner truck. A bit bonkers but prolly still short of range for Wyoming and Montana ...
Is it wrong that I really want one? I had the privilege to sit in one at a North American car show and it is as huge as it looks. The 10 year old me is drooling all over this thing.
My (standard) driving licence limits me to 3.5 ton vehicles, suggesting I wouldn't be permitted to even take it out of the garage (if I had a big enough garage - I should have said out of the warehouse.)
The tech is. They spent less than two years in development to launch. The hope is that this creates for them a trickle down effect; they made a maximalist EV and now shrinking it down should be easier
1:20 - Minor quibble. The H2 was the original "smaller" version. H2 is a completely different vehicle than the original military HMMWV / Hummer H1. It's really just a Chevy Tahoe with a body kit. (Okay, there's more to the H2 than that, but it is at its core the same platform as the Chevy Tahoe, where the H1 was a purpose-built platform just for the H1 / military Humvee. The only relation to the H1 is the fact that AM General built it from Suburban frames in AM General's own plant, the same one used to build the H1. (Technically it's the GMT820 platform, which was used for the H2, Tahoe, Caddy Escalade, and GMC Yukon; the H2 also used some components from the GM 2500 series heavy duty trucks.) The H3 was based on the GMT345 platform, with much fewer customizations compared to the H2 / GMT820, it was effectively a Chevy Colorado / GMC Canyon with a reskin, built in the same factories as the Colorado/Canyon, unlike the H2 was was built in AM General's factory.)

I can't see the point of a barge like this other than as as commercial vehicle - its a willy waving vanity vehicle for personal transport
Fascinating, and at the same time absurdly pointless.
Like NATO?
Utterly an enormous waste

@@o0alias0o I'm great! You?
The concept of Hummers is a nod to GM's interest in the moon. Lunacy.
Cheers for the vid.
spot on!
At over 4000kg it is useless on the European market. You can't drive it with a normal driving license in most European countries since that limits you to 3500kg.
You will need a lorry driver’s license to drive that thing in Italy. Legal limit for cars is 3500kgs…
Best review of this atrocity. Thank you for some common sense.

If someone ICEs your charging space, simply drag the car out with this, then plug in.......
OMG, that would be the perfect Hummer EV commercial! Just make the ICE the most gigantic, cartoony bro-dozer imaginable.
It’s Jack sized!
Big deal GM Ultium platform is just a bunch of batteries in a box.
Must have took 100s of engineers a decade to figure that one out or the marketing department 5 minutes.
I mean it’s a derivative of their scratched skateboard platform with practical design. Plus the suppliers finally caught up for feasibility’s sake.
Perfect for when someone has ICEed your charging station and you have to drag them away 🙂
If "obscenely excessive" was car, it would be this. But then again its American.
Thank you!
You've never seen 3 wipers before? Um, Jaguar E-Type anyone?
I'm pretty sure one wheel weighs the same as my twizzy
And a tyre change would cost the same
I think this really illustrates why cars like the Aptera are so great. There is a sexiness to being future forward and when you design for extreme efficiency, you automatically get that. This Hummer is just another in a long line of vehicles designed to waste everyone's time, money and resources.
Agree re Aptera. True innovation is much more appealing than in-your-face silliness like this (but this is fun too)
Like he said in the video : not everyone is into evs for nerdy efficiency.
Not gonna lie it kinda looks fun
What a brilliant review Jack, thank you!
We need more, many, many, many more destination chargers. Workplaces need vehicle chargers. The corner store needs vehicle chargers. Robert, can you please keep lobbying governments to further this, or do our dreams stall? ❤️🇦🇺
Biggest waste of money I've seen in a long time👎
That sound system in the tailgate is literally the only unnecessary luxury-car doodad that has ever impressed me.
If the laws of physics didn't apply to batteries and I could have 212kWh in my MINI electric, I would be able to travel........ 1140 miles on a charge! This is based on my real world average of 250km (155 miles) over 2 years of ownership. Of course in the real world, towing a massive trailer full of batteries would do wonders for the economy, and not in a good way :)
I still want a Hummer though ;) Nice review as always Jack.
My boss bought a black H3 a few month ago. He also lives in north London. I've got to wonder if your inconsiderate neighbour (1:21) is in fact my boss! 😲
Unfortunately you cannot buy one right now and probably not until “Spring 2023” according to GM. There has been a stop sale on all Hummers since October. Mine is sitting at the dealership waiting for a battery pack leak fix.
There was an echo when Jack shut that rear door. It's that big

“The most impressive truck in America is an EV.”
I’m going to have to use that!
Who on earth thinks that's a good idea for the UK/Europe?
It seems like EVs come in two sizes. Too big and too small. How about a minivan?
Minivans are generally hated in the US. They're seen as "mommy-mobiles".
@@LG123ABC Well mommies need cars too. Personally, I think of it as a two-seater with a lot of cargo room for dog, camping equipment, gardening supplies, rockets, and occasionally other people. Much more practical/versatile hauling room than this stupid Hummer.
The Travis Nike fits this episode so well! both the shoes and the Hummer are ridiculously pricey.
OK, slightly serious question. Given its weight, and the standard UK license maxing out at 3.5T, can this be driven on a typical license in the UK?
yes if you passed your cat B test prior to 1997, no if after - you would need to upgrade to a cat C1 licence. In either case, lower speed limits also apply to this vehicle - 50mph on country roads, 60mph on dual-carriageways.
I guess those speed limits are now potentially outdated since this thing can probably steer and stop quicker than a lot of ICE cars on the road today.
@@richardschofield2201 it's the mass of the vehicle, rather than its dynamic performance, that matters for these speed limits. If anything, the limits are too generous for heavy vehicles such as this.
You guys should really reign in your government. Remember, they work for you!
@@LG123ABC It is working for us. There is no need for such a ridiculously big vehicle for general use. If you really feel the need, it's not unreasonable for you take take a special test to prove yourself capable of handling it.
Mate, that was another greatly crafted review!-)
I want one too to resell it! 😁 Awesome video to see the details! Thank you
I think it's awesome and probably an amazing experience to drive. I don't think it's meant to be practical. Driving this thing around would be an event in itself.
Probably is an understatement.
It's a dangerous vehicle to drive. It's only made to get attention.
But you'd receive much better attention if you drove a Renault Twizy, or Citroën 2CV or Ami.
Proving that conspicuous consumption is possible in an EV I would leave to Lunaz, GM just doesn’t have the style to pull it off.
@@toyotaprius79 It's not "dangerous". Don't be such a girl.
Well, what can one say...better than the ICE version I guess. Decent range, and it will need it too, given the CCS Type 1 charging port might make on-to-go top-ups challenging...
1.5 miles per kWh is the energy equivalent to about 50 miles per US gallon of petrol (gas). So it's about 50 times more efficient than its predecessor. I suppose that's progress?
Hey now the og h1 could do 5mpg downhill with a tailwind in neutral. Even h2s struggled to get high single digit mpg.
It took the puny can't do much of anything h3 to break double digit mpg. 😂
Epic car, but that VW Harlequin fleece is surely a crime against humanity!
Just imagine what you can do with 212kwh...
Power all of your neighbors' homes with vehicle to grid
Paying $400.000 for this car is just plain stupidity! LOL.
Note the space theming is due to this being GM’s “moonshot” attempt in getting back in EV. Plus they developed the original lunar rover
If you just see the design, without any specs nor size comparison, it looks sexy. But, once you actually look at the data sheet, like efficiency, weight, comparable low storage, it just makes you puke.
I’m just glad it’s a halo car and not actually marketed to do big numbers
Sexy...!?!?!?
Looks like you're into BIIIIIGGG laydees....... !?!?!?
Like a true HUMMER, shameful excessiveness and incompetent opulence.
Definitely make that movie... nice one Jack.

The first time I have to wait in line for one of these to finish charging I am going to throw a big tantrum.
But they give you a free bag with the launch edition.
Thrilling
Note that most people who buy these things have a whole stable of posh motorcars!
Sh...! I still have to get a truck driver's license - my motorcycle and my car driver's license don't allow me to drive the Hummer EV Monster here! 😩🤠
My (standard) driving licence limits me to 3.5 ton vehicles, suggesting I wouldn't be permitted to even take it out of the garage (if I had a big enough garage - I should have said out of the warehouse.)
When did you pass your test, because if it was before 1997 you can drive up to a 7 tonner
@@sergentcolon1 Thanks. Pre-97 yet still limited to 3.5 ton.
@@connclissmann6514 special reason? Because anyone who passed their test pre 97 was automatically given a c1 classification

well said. sometimes some things just have to be a little out there
If this is the future for GM, then why am I thinking about dinosaurs?
The tech is. They spent less than two years in development to launch. The hope is that this creates for them a trickle down effect; they made a maximalist EV and now shrinking it down should be easier
Utterly impractical in the UK. Far less practical than the F150.
It's not our fault you have tiny little roads that you haven't bothered to upgrade.
When Kyle Connor from Out of Spec tested the Hummer EV he got 400 kW of regen back into the battery at peak with all that weight!
The odds of me ever driving this vehicle are actually lower than a Tesla. Which is really saying something I can tell you.
So how long before those 4 removable roof panels start leaking?
Going by the history of "T-Tops" in GM cars back in the 1970s: almost immediately.
I hope that price tag included converting the charging port from CCS1 to CCS2 !
BTW - The E-Type Jag had 3 wipers
The SAAB from the early 1970s had 4 wipers.
Haven't Morgan also used the triple wiper method?
Only some early models for the US
Excellent shout. I knew there was another!
"Are you a tiny bit curious?"
Then I answered "NO", and closed the video.
Thanks Jack for make me realize I couldn't care less about this huge dinosaur :)
