This tutorial is for Linux uses having any distribution.
installation section
$sudo su // switch user to root mode
$apt-get install foremost // install foremost
$apt-get install recoverjpeg //install recoverjpeg
recovery section
$sudo su //switch user
$fdisk -l //list disks
-----------------using recoverjpeg-----------------------
$recoverjpeg /dev/sda or sdb(run fdisk to get the name) -o (output directory)
egs: $recoverjpeg /dev/sda1 -o /home/user/Desktop/recovery
explanation :recover data from the partition "dev/sda1" and stores the recovered items in "/home/user/Desktop/recovery" directory
-------using foremost---------------
$foremost -i /dev/sda or sdb(run fdisk to get the name) -v -t (type of files like jpg,png,pdf etc...or all) -o (output directory)
egs: $foremost -i /dev/sda1 -v -t -all -o /home/user/Desktop/recovery
arguments:
-i input
-h help
-v verbose
-o output
-t type of files
explanation:recover data from the partition "dev/sda1" and stores the recovered items in "/home/user/Desktop/recovery" directory

Foremost only recovers files, not directories, so all the files it recovers will be put in one directory, which you specify on the command-line.

how do we keep the same folder structure when restoring all the file with Foremost?
Well, that's just the problem with data recovery, isn't it?
It's the filesystem that knows about metadata such as folder structure and filenames and most importantly what's-where (file size, offset on disk, in case of fragmentation for each data segment, etc.).
If the filesystem is kaput, and you resort to carving raw data (which is what foremost and other such tools do), then there's no way to preserve filenames and folder structure.

I just following this tutorial but when I write apt-get install recoveryjpg, theres "could not get lock. .." unable to acquire the dplg front lock" could I solve this?
There is possibly some other institution/updates happening in the background. Please try after some time. Or delete the lock and try again

Just don't use root!!! Especially when you are deleting files or doing any other operations. Use "sudo command" instead of staying on root all the time.

Well. I accidentally overwrote windows with Linux trying to install linux on an external hard drive... hopefully linux will be able to recover some of the pictures from the partition it’s operating from... ughh I wish I had another computer or the money to go to a professional.
