    Backup is your best friend.
Either backup in the old, slow way... or just buy a new disk, _dd_ the old to the new one and start using the new one. HDD:s are cheap nowadays, so I would definitely recommend that.

Would TPM cause trouble in the recovery process, or just the bitlocker password is enough to decrypt it? Good vid btw :)

I created an image file but didn't save it in the directory you used (mine is in a folder under my user directory), nor do I seem to have the "/Data/RecImgs" directory inside of /mnt. Using "photorec image.dd" returns "No such file or directory." I ended up using photorec to access the drive directly and ignored the image I made, although I'd like to know how to work with it. I'm a brand-new Linux user and overall this was a great intro to the tools I was interested in, although not totally beginner-friendly. Another note I had & something I had to figure out on my own was that the right and left arrow keys are used to select / deselect individual file type selections, while "s" will simply select / deselect all. Again, great video, overall. Thanks.

If you want to move all files with jpg OR jpeg OR png extension, then the command find should be:
    find . -type f \( -iname "*.jpg" -o -iname "*.jpeg" -o -iname "*.png" \) -exec mv '{}' ../dest/ \;
Thanks for your interesting videos. :)

Nice tutorial Quidsup ... best i have seen........... I use these recovery tools quite often . But GeeZus it irritates me how you lose ALL file names.
I recently recovered 93,000 + photo's , 200+ movies and over 500 short home video's .................32 hrs to recover it all ......... over 9 yrs of a family's life, for a little ol Granny. It was both a case of Happiness and joy at having gotten the photo's back ................ And stress and anguish coz the poor ol dear didn't know what to do next. How do you put them back into folders and photo albums. ALL the info that was with them is gone. She mentioned that it would take her years to get it all sorted
And some types of movies get broken down into their VOB sections ..............you try putting them back together !!! especially when there are no file names
surely someone out there can improve this wonderful software further

Darren Moore Its due to the loss of the File Allocation Table. The data recovery tools can see a file but without the FAT table they have no idea what it's called.
It was like that 20+ years ago doing file recovery in DOS.
      Cheers

Darren Moore Been there before and ended up using batch renaming programmes such as pyrenamer or metamorphose2. I just renamed all the photos by date taken based on exif data and sorted em chronologically. Should help the wee gran get her photos into folders without too much cutting and pasting ;-)

So you can only backup jpg, gif, png files with this app?
So then how do I restore video files and other stuff?
This is confusing, and I didn't know what to do in testdisk after searching through the HDD.
Could you redo this tutorial but with normal / user-friendly apps please? And is there an app that will allow me to backup the HDD to multiple USB sticks because my disk doesn't have enough space?

    • @EnderCrypt
      @EnderCrypt 6 лет назад

its not really 'backup' its restoring, and if you look at 5:09, you can see that at the top theres an option called "Custom Own custom signature", now.. i havent used this software (yet).. but im gonna take a guess and say with 97% certainty, that you can choose your own file extensions using that option, and even more advanced things
now, regarding backing up the harddrive to multiple usb sticks, theres a few possible solutions, one would be to just splice the file into many smaller files, you could do this manually using some software or by doing something like.. rar file splicing (common feature in rar applications, like for example winrar)

  • @slidingdownthehill

    hey there,
i use testdisk when pushed it's quite useful.
as for the file naming well that is another matter.
i did toy with the idea of writing a script to pull the info from the doc and rename them - using.... another utiliy (fileprop?)... wonder if you'd thought of that.
in the meantime - another good vid - thanks.

Oh... how I remember DOS many years ago, very simple just to load a prog.. then later trying to bring in a bot from a friends computer to an IRC channel 10 years ago gave me the sweats.. now this just scares me because I don't understand it.. all those instructions mean something in plain language.. it would be good if someone would define them.. If you know what they mean, you can understand better and remember them and what they do.. an old granny just saying ;)

possibly, the more 'empty space' there is on the harddrive, the more you MIGHT be able to recover

    Hi,Here is a problem:
I have a 200GB internal pc hdd that was partitioned to have winxp and
ubuntu 10 running on it. My windows xp needed to be redone fresh so I
booted to an Ubuntu 16.04 LiveUSB to erase the partition using GParted. I
then decided I wanted to resize my existing Ubuntu partition. I think I
was going from about 100 to the full size of my hard drive. I started
to see the task and waited about 5 min. I realized that the process was
going to take a very very long time and so i used the" back button to
start" to cancel the operation.but i don't validated the "apply botton"
Now my problems begin. the pc not booting at all. Any hint about? Thanks in advance

I have one driver that i was using to make a bartop with arcade games in it to backup some data, but i forgot about it and one day turned the system on and it got bad blocks, and since i didn't want to mess with it and didn't have installed anything anyway i started formating it, but just as i pressed the format disk i remembered it and turned the system off, but of course the damage was made, so the question is: will it help me restore this hd or my data?

Boot from a live CD or flashdrive and move a portion of the files to another unit (a second flashdrive or external hard drive) and also run *sudo touch /forcefsck* so your Linux distro will run a file system checking after you reboot.
You probably solved this issue already, anyway this is a possible solution and hopefully will be useful for someone else.
Prior to proceeding as mentioned above, download the ISO of a Linux distro and then use the *UNetBootin* program to create a bootable Linux live CD inside a USB flashdrive using such ISO file.

Grab yourself either one of these:
      For 2.5" drives: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00XLAZODE/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o08_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1
      For 3.5" / any IDE drives: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000VS4HDM/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o08_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1
You can then boot via a different drive / computer using Linux (make sure you have space on the healthy drive for everything you want to recover from the corrupted one), access the crashed drive via a USB port, and _attempt_ to use these tools to recover data from it.
