An important preemptive way to protect your data before any repair procedures is using file recovery tool such as Disk Drill, to essentially give us the best chance of recovering our data and restoring drive functionality. I use Disk Drill for these scenarios all the time. It's fast, easy to use, and extremely reliable. And with the Windows Edition downloaded from the link in the description, you can recover up to 500 megabytes of files for free.
📌 To recover data from a corrupted hard drive:
1. Download and install Disk Drill.
2. Select the drive or partition that is corrupted.
3. Click the Search for lost data button to initiate scanning.
4. Once the scan is finished, select the files (photos, music files, videos, documents, etc.) you wish to restore and click Recover.
5. Choose a recovery location. Make sure that your recovery location is not your corrupted drive or partition.
6. Click next to recover data from a corrupted hard drive.
Now with your data hopefully a little more secure, let's move on to the remaining three methods that will hopefully be able to restore the functionality of your drive once and for all.
Method 1: Test your drive on different devices
So first off, starting simple, just try a new device, and know I don't mean a new drive, I mean a new computer, a new cable, just something that's going to break the chain to see if it maybe isn't even your hard drive. It might just be a computer or a bad cable or something that makes it seem like the drive itself is the problem when in reality it's something totally unrelated.
Method 2: Run the error-checking command
Next on, we are going to try a PowerShell and CMD command called check disk. So simply put, this is a command that will analyze a given disk for directory or file system errors and correct them if possible. That is also a reliable way to fix a corrupted external hard drive without formatting.
To repair a corrupted hard drive using CMD:
1. Right-click Start and click Windows PowerShell (Admin). If prompted to allow access by UAC, click Yes.
2. Type chkdsk E: /r. Replace E: with the drive letter of your corrupted hard drive. Press Enter.
This command can take some time to complete if your hard drive is large in size.
Method 3: Using the hard drive repair tool
The other method is relatively new to me, but one that I've been very pleased with and that is actually another piece of software called Victoria 911. So without getting too technical, Victoria 911 actually differs a little bit from the aforementioned Disk Drill in its core functionality, being that this software is really meant to fix internal drive errors, whereas Disk Drill is meant to actually recover files.
To fix a corrupted hard drive using Victoria911:
1. Download Victoria911 and extract the files. Open it.
2. Click Test & Repair.
3. Make sure the scan is set to Read and Ignore. Press Scan.
4. Upon completion, you can choose to remap bad sectors by clicking Remap and performing another scan.
Method 4:
The last thing that I just wanted to throw in here is formatting. But even within formatting, there are two separate methods that you can use that may actually lend better to your situation than the other. So the first would be a quick format. And what this does is erases your partition table, but there is the chance to fix such errors as "file directory is corrupted or unreadable" and to perform hard drive data recovery.
However, there is also a second option called full format. And at this point, it is beyond saving. If you enable full format and you format the drive with that option, it will essentially reset all of the sectors and pretty much set everything back to zero to where there is no chance of recovering data at all. But that is the best likelihood of fixing your drive and restoring all of your functionality. So it really just depends on how valuable the drive is versus how valuable the files are.

Andrew, how long does it typically take for Disk Drill to scan a corrupted hard drive? I have a pretty large drive and I'm wondering if it's going to take hours or even days to complete. I also never heard of Victoria 911 before but it sounds sick! Gonna try it out next time my drive goes down. Thanks for putting me onto this new software!
The scan duration depends on many factors, including your Drive size and health, as well as your computer performance.
If your Hard Drive has a hardware malfunction, including bad sectors, then this might be the reason Disk Drill is taking longer than expected to complete the scan.

Brooo...😭I tried to connect my old SSD using external item, it's showing the drive and showing online too. But it's the drive is opening and showing "the drive is not accessible, incorrect function". When I'm trying to "chkdsk" it in cmd its showing "volume not found". It's not even showing any storage in Disk Management just showing "removeable" and "online" only. What should i do now I'm clueless.
Ensure all cables and connections are secure and try different USB ports or cables. Update or reinstall the SSD drivers via Device Manager. Use Disk Management to check if you can initialize, format, or assign a drive letter to the SSD. Run diskpart in Command Prompt to list, select, and assign a drive letter to the disk if possible. If issues persist, use third-party software to check for file system corruption or seek professional data recovery services if the data is critical.
Do any of these, aside from formatting, help with an Xbox 360 formatted hard drive? My console has stopped reading it. The data is fine while the drive constantly says unformatted.

Thank you for this, but will this method work for this issue, it sounds similar. My letter I drive (that's drive I:) is no longer "there", my PC doesn't read it. I go to disc management and it tells me I I need to initialize my drive 0 (it is calling it drive 0). Is there a way to do this for free to "fix" the drive and keep all data on that drive. I have an 18T internal hdd that had a windows defender hiccup that wound up damaging the ntfs partition on the drive. I was told that chkdsk can either fix it or not. But I can't use it because my failed hdd doesn't show in file explorer in windows 11. It does appear in disk management, but it shows as unallocated. Is there a way to recover the original all9cation so I can hopefully recover the data? The files aren't extremely important, but I would like to recover them if possible.

I am trying to recover 1T of data from my hard drive using disk drill. I was just rearranging my files within the drive. When I was done rearranging, I used a different laptop to use that same drive and some of the files got disappeared. I know I never deleted those, just rearranged. After panicking for few hours, I got your videos. Now, Disk drill is scanning half way to the total 30ish hours. Files are preview able, so I am hopeful to recover those. My question to you is when I recover, can I get my folder structure? Getting 1T data in one folder unsorted will be needing hours of work. I'm replacing my corrupted HD with an SSD. The files on the corrupted one aren't life-n-death important, but I'd prefer to have them. Is there a way to access the corrupted one from a fresh working drive? Before Windows stopped being able to boot ( & trying check disk & DISM or whatever it is) I never had any files disappearing. I wonder if they're in there & fine behind the OS that can't start.
If your corrupted drive is still recognised by your computer, you can use Disk Drill to scan it and check what files can be recovered.

Please Help! My External HDD shows the blue screen of death once it's plugged in and then the system restarts. It's over 3 weeks this problem started. I've tried it on other systems and the results are the same. 2 days ago i took it to a computer shop to see if they can help, it showed on their system but not accessible as in it didn't open. They tried to recover my data with Stellar recovery software but it just wouldn't bulge. At the moment I don't know what to tell my clients about their construction drawings that are in the HDD. i have a lacie drive that has been causing files to get corrupted left and right. So far I have seen 239 flat PSD files and 189 layered PSD files get corrupted. Who knows what else could be messed up. Most of the files when I click on them just say they cannot be opened. A few have that fun colored corrupt design on them. I work as a retoucher so the files are important but everything has already been delivered to my clients so I just formatted the drive after transferring what was still ok. Files seemed to get worse the longer they sat on the drive. All issues happened after it mysteriously disconnected on its own and then like an idiot I pulled out the cable even though it felt like it was running but didn't show up on my computer.... anyways now that I formatted how do I check to make sure the drive is actually fixed? is there a way to tell or do you just hope for the best?

Hi, I have a WD external drive that appears to be corrupt. The drive shows on pc but will not open the files it just keeps loading and I tried on TV and the TV doesn't recognize the hard drive. So I have a unique problem. I have a drive that had some power stuff happen with it (power flicker, PC restart during file reading), long story short, the rest of my computer is fine but that external SATA drive seems corrupted. I've tried every cable I have, and it is seen in my File Explorer, but without any storage info displayed, and interacting with it *at all* seems to make File Explorer stop responding, in addition to sometimes making explorer.exe crash. It makes Disk Drill scan indefinitely, and CHKDSK just displays a blank field without doing anything. It's even making Victoria (the software) not run properly. The ONLY response I get is when the drive is unplugged (can't even do that cleanly via eject media, interacting with the drive AT ALL seems to not work). Is there a way out of this?
Try accessing the drive in Safe Mode or using a Linux Live USB, which might handle the drive differently. Connect the drive to another computer to see if the issue persists. If the data is critical and these steps fail, consider using a professional data recovery service.

My PC is not booting so how should I use any of these methods? System diagnostics is showing error 2000-0151 (dell alienware pc) which is hard disk failure so I cant get windows to boot.

My laptop runs fine, does everything as normal up until the point I plug my hard drive in, then and only then does it immediately get ridiculously slow and even causes my applications to become unresponsive, including files explorer, steam, and even task manager. But, immediately after I unplug it, everything returns to normal.

I made a mistake on removing Seagate internal HDD from Asus Aopen and installed it on HP Compaq pro 4300 sff PC and corrupted Seagate hard drive size reduce from 500GB to 3.9GB unallocated. I removed the Seagate internal HDD from HP Compaq pro 4300 sff PC and reinstalled it back to Asus Aopen PC and did not detect hard drive boot during restarting the PC. Great video. For me disk drill didn't work when I ask to scan everything. It worked when I asked individual type. I did pictures and bingo it found all my pictures... But.... I forgot about all the movies. And I erased my drive and it was too late then. Probably if I would of ask for movies type I would have saved them too. Ho well next time. perhaps?
To receive the most complete scanning results we suggest running the scan on the whole drive (not just volume or partition) without interruptions, locating the files in question, and previewing them to verify the content. Some third party software which has access to the drive may block it. Try disabling it or using the system restore feature from the control panel to restore the system to a point before the recent software package installation
if i connect my harddrive, everything stops expect chrome and file explorer. i can't launch powershell or cmd without disconnecting it. Even If I prelaunch powershell and connect the harddrive, the command doesn't run. how to fix my harddrive ?

Problem is hdd wont even show up on pc on top of it being corrupted it shows as offline and i cant bring it back online....
