  • Hi everybody and welcome to Bopping the Changes.
Bopping the Changes is a series of lessons designed to help you master the Bebop Language.
In this Ep.1 we’ll be dealing with two of Barry Harris’s Scales of Chords: the Major6-Dim and the Minor6-Dim Scales of Chords and their application in comping two of Jazz’s main harmonic movements: the Major ii-V-I and the minor ii-V-i.
Recorded with a handmade semi hollow-body guitar built by IS Guitars through a Pod Go by Line6

I was watching your 8 string performances and it inspired me to get one. Now that I have one I'm so so glad your making educational content using that guitar. Thank you for your explanations and looking forward to the series

This was great. More explanation of how you’re applying it to the first few examples would have been useful!
You played examples but didn’t break it down.
Like, I know enough I be able to play the Dmajor 6 dim scale of chords over Bbm7, but wasn’t sure what comes next….

Dear @JAYDUBYAH29 thank you very much for your comment.
I’m basically applying the borrowings in different voicings (Drop-2, Drop-3 and Drop-2 & 4: are you familiar with all of them?).
The idea of the lesson is to present the theory, show some of my examples but then invite the audience to come up with their own comping solutions. That’s how this music breathes: from spontaneous creation of the player.

@@viniciusperez6509I’m in the same boat. Which Barry Harris ideas are you using for the V chord in the maj 251
I understand the concept of using say the maj6 chord as a sub for the min7 (say C6 as Am7) but not sure that’s going on on the V chord.
      Thanks

@@ralphthomson2680 thank you very much for your comment. As I’ve mentioned in the beginning of the lesson, we are dealing with the Major6- and Minor6-Dim scales of chords only. I talked about the Dom7- and the Dom7(b5)-Dim scales of chords. In the case of three minor ii-V, over the V7 I’m using a Minor6-Dim a minor 3rd up the one that expresses the iim7(b5) getting the sound of Tritone’s minor. In the Major I-V, over the V7 I’m using the Dom7(b5)-Dim scale of Chords. More on both approaches will come on later Ep. In this one I wanted to focus on both the Major6- and the Minor6-Dim scales of chords alone. Hope it help clarify some things. If you have any more questions, just let me know. All the best.

I’ve spent a lot of time trying to understand the BH concepts but I’m still struggling to organically fit them into my playing.
      Thanks very much!

As for Barry, I’m deeply grateful to Chris from Things I’ve learned from Barry Harris and Thomas from the Labyrinth of Limitations. They’ve shed a bright light on Barry’s concepts. All the best.
