The closing theme tune is still one of the best tv themes ever
Even if people can't remember the actual cartoon, they *might* remember the theme tune. "Who's the bear? Da-Da-Da-Da."
Ever since I was a kid I've always remembered 'not behind the bus spotty' lol.
Fun fact: the area they are crossing the road is Cardiff town centre right by the millennium stadium (or the old Cardiff arms park back then). I'm born and raised in Cardiff and recognised it instantly
I'm just now seeing this (even though I grew up watching the show on VHS) and that's the line that just kills me; hysterical!
I've always remembered "Don't run, Spotty! You might fall over!"
Not in the 2 way bike lane, Spotty
“Remember, I can’t be there to save you!”
You’ve got super powers, you can do what you want - you selfish bastard.
Yeah, but would you speak up if your life was saved by a teddy bear. If it were me, I'd keep my mouth shut; with the friends I have, I'd never live it down
I remember watching this in primary school! Not behind the bus Spotty!
Do you really?
Wow.
I remember the advert version from one of my old recorded vhs tapes back in the 1990's. I never knew there was a full episode of the advert until I first came across this a few years ago. I believe this was the last Superted episode to be made by Sirol Animation before Hanna Barbera took over.
I remember seeing this a couple of times on TV. I can't believe someone actually managed to record and upload it.
George Harvey Its the internet you can find anything if you look hard enough. lol
"[Earth] has the worst people in the galaxy too." -Spotty
I've been burned by a spotty man. No magic dust can repair this broken heart.
"I can't be there to save you, especially on the planet Earth" -SuperTed
I can't decide if that's tragic or ominous. Not sure how I can manage my life now.
angryDAnerd I kinda felt the same way.... Spotty seems to want to point out negatives in others ? I can always remember Spotty acting a bit stuck up around certain people. Kinda hypocritical.
Wanna get revenge on Spotty? Just grab some paint and stripe the bastard.
@@TaylorZanderFrancis No good getting him to use a zebra crossing, then, if he hates stripes so much.
todays cartoons should be more like this one.
*I second that!*
Jon Pertwee & Derek Griffiths. They put SPLINK into our lives in both animation & live action in the 1970s.
That is very interesting. It teaches kids how to cross the road safely by using the green cross code. Kids must make sure that they look both ways before crossing the road and never cross/run without looking both ways before crossing the road otherwise they may get knocked down by a car or any traffic and they will be finished.
Luckily I never got knocked down by a car (not even when I was a kid nor a teenager)
Anyway good evening from Ireland!
At 3:44 Bulk can be spotted riding a motor scooter and at 3.50 Texas Pete can be spotted driving a car
I KNEW there was a full length version of this! So far all I've been able to find is the shortened 2-minute version, but this full episode was definitely aired in the 1980s...
it's my hometown Cardiff :) got the old empire pool on there and Cardiff arms park.
vikingsmb superted was made in Wales
It's a Welsh-made animation, just like Fireman Sam
@@cupcakefairy87 Notice how the models in "Fireman Sam" have the same eyes and faces as that in "SuperTed". Only difference is one is cel animation and one is stop motion. Took me years to figure that out.
I also remember seeing this one on TVAM when they did a feature on this as part of the Wide Awake Club
It was repeated as regularly as 1998 (12 years after the cartoon originally finished and a *good* 2 years after it was lasted shown on the BBC via repeats) on GMTV/early morning ITV. The shortened version of this anyway. Not sure when the full-length version of this we are watching on here was last shown on British TV. I *defo* remember it was shown a lot in schools throughout the 90s (when I was growing up).
superted just broke the fourth wall at the end.
So as the opening
I remember watching this at school. Good times.
What was Super Ted's secret magic word? Super Ted can't be much of a super hero if he can't
save us on planet earth.
I believe that superted's magic word might be "fly like a bear".
@@slackerpinkie It was, believe it or not (and no it wasn't a swear word) disclosed on a puzzle page in the very first Superted annual, to be
Drum roll........
MOTHER NATURE!!!
It must have been something *real* simple if someone like Bulk can briefly remember it and say it.
Children must learn and remember to not run into the roads.
Spotty played the first ever Crossy Road
Blimey, I forgot the Doctor was Spotty man!
Children have a lot to learn if they want to grow up.
38 Years ago today that This episode/PIF of Superted first Premiered on CBBC1!
You know Justice league was really shit when SuperTed is better and sends a more important message. Also crossing the road outside Cardiff castle is a real pain in the tits so they got that right as well.
Holy crap.. it's a full length version of the safety video!
I noticed there was a much shorter version I suppose was aired on TV at one point.
Christopher Sobieniak There was.. it was only shortened down as an advert sized one.. i think
Liam Davis I guess this would've been played in schools or something.
Made by the same team as the full 'Superted' series, this episode was funded and copyrighted by the UK Government. Because of this, the episode turned up on Channel 4 UK as an occasional filler, even though the series proper was aired on BBC and S4C. The shortened PIF/PSA version was aired on ITV.
ephemeralfilm Thanks for the info. That's kinda interesting they would play this outside S4C/BBC like that, but I guess it's nice they happen to find somewhere on the dial for it. The way it begins with the opening intro would've made anyone think the show was playing on C4 for reals!
This almost comes off like something I would've loved to have seen stuck on one of the VHS volumes sold in the US (Disney had released this series here and also aired it on The Disney Channel) as a "Bonus Never-Before-Seen Episode!" just to tease/annoy us into thinking it was going to be another adventure, not a lesson on crossing the road!
You can't be here to save us
what sort of super hero are you
+Asa Fisher That is a rather odd thing to say, but given the circumstances, they certainly wanted a way to remind kids of the IRL dangers in a clever way than to write out these are fictitious characters.
That's definitely a very bizarrely written sentence incorporated for this PIF.
Can you be everywhere at once
Guru Larry anyone? and you forgot twat at the end
Real talk
We were once shown a brief snippet of this at school one time!
in my school we where shown the whole this
@@jackkemp3331 In my school they used to beat us everyday in case we broke rules without being caught.
At 3:51 it's Texas Pete driving the blue Rover SD1.
ITV also showed it during the schools slot and was released on video only for showing in schools
watched it at primary school
2:48 That car driver looked like he really wanted to run Spotty over. *GASP*
As the face of the SPLINK Campaign, Spotty should know better, he clearly doesn't practice what he preaches.
Remember this coming on just before the adverts leading to citv in the afternoon.
I know that Derek Griffiths and the late Jon Pertwee are in it but I don’t think anyone brought this up Blotch is played by Wendy Padbury who also was in Dr Who.
She was voiced by the now late Sheila Steafel in the original TV version. Not sure why they changed it.
@@SuperTed19021 Me neither.
I could be wrong but I think this was made at the same time as the Superted stage show, 'cos it has the voice of Wendy Padbury (Zoe in Classic Who) as Blotch.
Wasn't that called "Comet of the Spooks" or something. I think that played at the Dome in Brighton as well (my home town), alas it was 4 years before I was born.
Another company released Superted on video in the UK in the 80s before Children's Video Library/Vestron that company was Guild Home Video which explains the first season episodes later being available through the Video Collection label under a sublicence agreement with Guild however the Guild releases were of the first season from 1982/83 the Guild releases were pre-cert seasons 2&3 were released by Children's Video Library/Vestron and later on Tempo/Collins/Abbey who would go on to release the full series on DVD
The first season was later added to the Children's Video Library/Vestron releases
The Video Collection released the first series of SuperTed
SuperTed19021 that same season 1 that was released initially by Guild Home Video as a pre-cert in 1983
@@darren2514fv Oh, I see.
Cardiff is really showing its age here!
It sure is! Biggest difference in that the Arms Park changing to the Millennium Stadium (I refuse to call it the Principality Stadium)...Aside from the fact that they would have been able to use the traffic lights on Westgate Street junction to cross the road where they were (as those lights have been there since the 1960s, although they were updated in 2010) this was otherwise a pretty accurate representation of Cardiff in 1986, and the Castle is mainly unchanged now 34 years on.... But the Cardiff Crest is now a Holiday Inn and there aren't any orange buses anymore (they were replaced by green buses in 1999)...
So the Teddy transforms into a superhero by unzipping and taking off his own skin?
Can't be anymore far-fetched than a 9-year old boy eating a banana to become a 7-foot body builder.
2 Doctor Who credits here.
Not only is Third Doctor Jon Pertwee here as Spotty, but Wendy Padbury, Zöe from the Second Doctor era, makes her one and only appearance here.
Why wasnt this on the DVD, by the way? At 5 minutes, they only needed to add another 2 and it could have been packaged as another episode of the show.
Stop, look and listen out for oncoming vehicles before crossing the road.
SuperTed is Not there to save you!
Remember that!
RIP Jon Pertwee.
Why, Superted Can't Be with us anymore?
3:28 Ohh yeah...Earth has the worst humans, evidently, but timidly. Spotty for President!
Ashley Potter Still better than Trump.
Time for Planet Spot to take Earth over.
My childhood 😢
4:33 WHAT KIND OF SUPERHERO ARE YOU?!
A wimpy one, sadly. For example, in "SuperTed at the Funfair", he was pinning for Spotty to be with him as he was ill in bed (he wouldn't have been any help anyway, he would wanted to go on the rides instead of the complete the mission) and just wandered about the fair instead of using his "superhuman/bear powers" to just storm the place. Thankfully, SuperTed's enemies are even more inept. How would he cope with some real baddies?
Wish they made a movie of superted
Please don't make it live action, please don't! That will cause damage to my eyeballs.
Should show this to Extinction Rebellion and Just Stop Oil.
From the producer of the sleeper hit "Norm of the North"!
What a way to sink low 😢
Ben Packham From Teddy Bear to Polar Bear!
From secret magic word to icy turd
Ben Packham Thank you! Better analogy!
no prob,mate.
ephemeralfilm - Would you mind me producing a full set of subtitles for this, free of charge? The automatic ones are worse than useless, and it'd be nice to give everyone access to this masterpiece, even those who can't hear!
Don’t run Spotty, you might fall over!!!!😱
I dread to think what colour his blood is if they ever show him bleeding.

3:43-3:45 You can see Bulk.
And Texas Pete is driving the car after he goes past. Wish they also had Skeleton in this going past on a pedal bike or something.
Made in Wales.
Me too!
I Always wanted to cross dangerously so superted might come and save me.
What did he say at the end? He's not coming to save you. Maybe you should have tried better luck with The Green Cross Code Man.
SuperTed19021 oh yeah remember that bit. Disclaimer, do not sue superted for any RTA’s. He’s a busy ted.
@@oranjelibertine Indeed, beating Texas Pete before picnic time in every ep.
Rover SD1 at 3:51.
Why do they have to go to earth to cross the road when they could've just done it on the planet spot 🤨
To make it appeal to us "Earth Kids". Maybe they had different road rules on Spot and Spotty is just a moron? Even his younger sister knew more about the green cross code.
Ladies and Gentlemen: Derek Griffiths breaking the cardinal sin of cartoons. :D
In what? Appearing on Corrie?
No the ending. Where he flat out admits that he cannot help people in real life, true he's being realistic, but a child seeing this might be a little confused. He might as well said 'this is a cartoon/work of fiction and I'm not real, so I can't save you'.
Oh, I see what you mean. That flew over my head as a child. I use to think they were real people, even if they are cartoons. I used to presume he was too busy saving the world so he can't be there to save me.
The 'especially on the Planet Earth' part proves that. I can sort of see where you were coming from though, but that was the real reason. They also kept that part in for the abridged 30 second TV version with an instrumental of the Superted theme playing in the background.
Not behind the bus.
🇬🇧🏴
Is Bloch voiced by ex Doctor Who babe, Wendy Padbury by any chance???
Just so that you know I just saw the credits and it turns out that it was.
Not behind the bus
Not behind the bus Spotty got a huge laugh in school
At 3:44 - is it just me, or is that a female version of Bulk riding past the bus on a motorbike?!
No, that's Bulk. In the car passing him, you can see the driver is Texas Pete.
@@SuperTed19021 - oh yes, at 3:50! That's a good spot (no pun intended!)
@@DaveAndBeth1978 I'm just amazed Tex can drive. He can barely ride a bike in one episode.
Just my opinion.... It's kind of funny, but doesn't Spotty come across as a bit racist, if not extremely prejudice ? He won't walk on a safety crossing just because it's got stripes.... and he states that earth has the worst people in the galaxy. So, if someone doesn't have spots, there's something wrong with them ? Right Spotty ?
He must surely take a shine to a kid with freckles. And there was quite a lot of them in this cartoon.
A great episode that is so educative to save lives of kids and probably some adults. That great closing theme has been unforgettable, since I first watched Superted as a kid in 1987.😇💟
