he had a SERIOUS 3 appearance a day gig from 76 to 80 doing this - www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2014/nov/25/david-prowse-green-cross-man-darth-vader-children-road-safety
It's ok, everyone knew it was from 1980, because it has the fake R2D2 in it? That puts it past 1978, and it came out even later in the UK, because of our censors and they just liked taking ages to show films over here sometimes. Even that detail temporises it better without having to resort to the DVLA, but so does the Mark IV Cortina, although the fake R2D2 is more obvious and recognisable a fact to the casual viewer.
God didn't dare to combine this man with James Earl Jones' voice. The result would have been too powerful so instead we ended up with two Darth Vader actors for one Darth Vader.
i love how his voice has changed from the last two adverts. clearly darth vader was embarrased and didn't want anyone to realise his former life as green cross. STOP, LUKE, LISTEN!! :P the green cross code be with you. luke, i am your friendly traffic warden, etc.
I always wondered if he was Frank's bodyguard, new wife or both? But then there is the very disturbing dinner scene with Frank (Patrick McGees character)on one side, Julian on the other and Malcolm McDowell (little Alex) in between them wondering if it's really a good idea to drink that wine.
I remember this as if yesterday, I used to do the green cross code however I forgot one day as I was excited to spend my 10p monthly pocket money on a finger of fudge to give myself a treat I stepped into the path of a datsun 120Y was nearly run over Mr Donny Osram my neighbour ploud into the back of the car as it braked to avoid me he was flung about 100yds down the street his motorbike was ruined the car driver was jolly cross and knocked his teeth out I was lucky that day I always remember that day and I always use the green cross code I think it should be brought back into schools to avoid accidents and your neighbour needing false teeth.
No wonder George Lucas dubbed James Earl Jones voice over Dave Prowse. That charming, polite voice coming out of a big, menacing figure like Darth Vader would have made everyone laugh. Like Alpha's broken collar voice in Up.
I remember this advert well and the robot jingle. I was six at the time. What became of the robot and the kids (if they were six, they'd now be 50 and so contemporaries). RIP Dave.
Green Cross Code: 1) Find a safe place to cross the road (Try to find zebra or toucan crossing). 2) Stand and stop on the pavement near the kerb. 3) Look all around and listen for traffic. 4) If traffic is approaching on either side or both, let it go. 5) When the road is clear, walk straight across. 6) Keep looking and listening as you cross.
thanks for uploading all these i have vague memories of seeing these on tv as a small child in the late 70s and early 80s and it was good to see them again. it makes me wonder why we don't have any public information adverts today in the UK. i remember one that was about change lanes at traffic lights, in the advert the 20year old ish son and new driver had to explain to his dad that he had changed lanes at traffic lights and someone had run into the back of his car fairly sure it was a cartoon advert any chance you got that one?
@animationdude56 It's not Irish, it's south-western. Was that droid actually supposed to look like R2-D2? And how did it manage to step off the kerb without falling over?
I agree.. A drivers license you only be valid in the country that issued it. It may be an annoyance to take a driving test every where you go but it would insure that folks adhered to the local laws. I saw an episode of "Cops" once where a Mexican immigrant was pulled over for running a red light he said " I swear officer, the light was BLUE!!" lol I know he meant green but its still hilarious.
Ever wondered how they filmed the car coming so close to the kids without actually hitting them? Dead easy! They just filmed the car reversing AWAY from the kids, then ran the film backwards! (Seriously)
So glad they finally let him use his real voice!
maybe im just used to it because i live in the south but i swear his bristol accent isnt even that hard to understand
Not very strong for a Meader! I guess he toned it down
They finally let him use his own voice rather than dub him!
The girl really needed a red cap to complete her Super Mario cosplay.
Yeah!.you're right about that one there!.
She even needed a mustache.
RIP Dave Prowse. You will be forever known as Darth Vader and the Green Cross Code Man.
"I find your lack of road safety disturbing."
Doesn't sound 0:49 later been used in Kamen Rider Fourze? 🙄

Did I coin a meme?
@@johnd1466 Nope.
Dave was an absolute legend back then.....I'm 54 and I still stop, look and listen even now when I cross a road.
Used to see these ads as a kid. So never had a problem crossing the road in my life after. Dave Prowse was and still is a legend..R.I.P.
it's such a shame Dave Prowse was late in life and got kicked out of the Star Wars ruinous Dave Prowse will Darth Vader best villains in my eyes
This is his real voice.
We ought to bring back these adverts in Britain for kids
I'm convinced this is not 1976, I'm convinced this was filmed in 1980.

Get a life 😂
The little robot character was a nod to R2D2, so that dates this clip to after 1976.
It's ok, everyone knew it was from 1980, because it has the fake R2D2 in it? That puts it past 1978, and it came out even later in the UK, because of our censors and they just liked taking ages to show films over here sometimes.

Never known Darth Bader actor was the green cross code man. I remember these adverts as a kid, they was worthwhile...R.I.P
The heterosexual version of R2-D2 never caught on.
So, this is Anakin with R2 before the suit, kinda
Anakin Musclewalker. LOL
God didn't dare to combine this man with James Earl Jones' voice. The result would have been too powerful so instead we ended up with two Darth Vader actors for one Darth Vader.
About 7 i think, stunt doubles , Bob Anderson for the sword fighting, and the guy for when his helmet comes off.
I think this is David's real voice in this one. SO much better than the others.
It is.
R2 units are perfect for making a safer traffic
Darth Vader really screwed up r2d2
He built him, he can do what he wants with him.
Vader Built C3PO... sorry
He gave Padme 3po
Padme gave Anaakin R2

Make sure it's safe to cross...to the Dark side
Always use the GREEN. CROSS. CODE.
I love that line, it's stuck in my head now.
An absolute delight, & educational too. David Prowse sure made the point about road safety!
I like the robotic voice of 'Green Cross Code' at 0:48.
Oh! I see Darth Vader has brought R2D2 along with him to co-star in this PIF!
If this ad was done in the 2020s, the slogan would be "Put down your phone and pull your head out' your arse, look and listen for passing cars..."
That is really good audio effects for 1976
I wish I had that Robot! "GREEN CROSS CODE!"
You can learn a lot from this guy.
This was before he turned to the Dark Side.
No wonder George Lucas dubbed James Earl Jones voice over Dave Prowse. That charming, polite voice coming out of a big, menacing figure like Darth Vader would have made everyone laugh.
Like Alpha's broken collar voice in Up.
"Darth Farmer" is what they called him on set along with "some Scotiish guy?"
Nice to hear Dave's own voice with his native Bristolian accent.
The ads were actually very effective, child road deaths dropped significantly Mr Prowse was rightly proud of that to his dying day.
"Always remember, if you don't use the Green Cross Code, I'll slash your hand off"
You underestimate the power of the green cross code!
Also, look what they did to R2 and Vader
I remember this advert well and the robot jingle. I was six at the time. What became of the robot and the kids (if they were six, they'd now be 50 and so contemporaries). RIP Dave.
(I love that costume, but it does cry out for a cape.)
When it came to this guy's role as Darth Vader, he could walk the walk, but couldn't talk the talk, so they had James Earl Jones do the voice.
You don't know the power of the Green Cross Code!
Think this is the only one where Dave was allowed to use his own voice !
Who would have thought that Vader and an R2 unit once lived on Earth?
The little girl is called Clodagh and the boy is Julian
Julian & Darth!
Classic kids tv advert, rip green cross code man dave prowse 🙏
David Prowse still did this even though he had already done 2 Star Wars movies at this point.
Green Cross Code:
1) Find a safe place to cross the road (Try to find zebra or toucan crossing).
2) Stand and stop on the pavement near the kerb.
3) Look all around and listen for traffic.

@ajlusted I wish we'd see Lollypop lady use these robots today.
Cross the road safely.
Thumbs up, if you want this robot in Episode VII. :)
Huh, part 1 and 2 on youtube sound nothing like him, but this one is his very voice!
I remember these adverts and always remember the green cross code when crossing the road :o)
R.I.P. David Prowse
So nice to see darth vader and r2d2 has been reunited

We should bring this back for all those kids who never look up from their phones. Get Jason Statham or Vinnie Jones to do it!

Carefully edited out: Green Cross Man having to repeatedly change the slides on the front of the robot.
@animationdude56 he's not irish, thats a Bristolian accent ^^
That robot used to give my mate nightmares - I really took the piss out of him at the time but now I can understand his point.

When I lived in Britain in the 1980's, I saw very few traffic lights and lots of crashes.

He sounds like Dylan Moran slightly.
Is that R2D2 with Darth Vader :) ... the actor in the superhero suit played Darth Vader in Star Wars but I forgot about the robot

Was that droid actually supposed to look like R2-D2? And how did it manage to step off the kerb without falling over?
This ad aired a year before Star Wars was released. But that doesn't mean they aren't related.
I agree.. A drivers license you only be valid in the country that issued it. It may be an annoyance to take a driving test every where you go but it would insure that folks adhered to the local laws.
