Most...awkward...ending...ever.
Needs a fade, right Capt obvious?
I'm sure that was for the local stations to put in whatever message they wanted to.
He was searching for the batcave with his thumb.
Back then, Uk advertising law stated that adverts had to have a few seconds of silence and a still at the end. Cheaper companies would literally just make everyone stand around for a little while rather than properly edit the frame to extend it. I think this still was used for television companies to regulate ad breaks to equal lengths as ITV was split into regions and showed the same programming with different commercials and continuity. Therefore, the still was used to fill any excess time before going back to the programme
It's the part to fade out during
Really nice to know Batman might have genuinely saved someone's life all those years ago.
That is such a cute way to think about this it makes me smile
Amazingly the boy Batman carries is my husband, obviously all a very long time ago , but he remembers it well !!!
mary cooney and the girl on the left is my mum.
How brilliant is that. What a fabulous memento this little film is for him. Does he remember exactly where it was shot?
Your husband is a lucky man, I'm sure if it had been me, *I'd* remember it too.
@@thefurrybastard1964 Batman holding himself. Now that would be a sight to see!
amazing! which road is it filmed on?
Holy pedestrian safety precautions! We still miss you Adam West
Adam West, the only one!!
00:42 i was the kid in the black shirt, i remember meeting adam west & the team to make this PSA, he was a good friend, i still miss him, now i'm in my 50's and i am watching this video with my kids.
I still miss you adam.

The Bright Knight saving the little British children. Outstanding!
This was filmed on May 12, 1967 while Adam was in London and Rome on a PR tour for the Batman show. The series was between its second and third season.
On May 6, he had an audience with the Pope (along with Sophia Loren and Gina Lollobrigida. Adam returned to Los Angeles on May 19.
The extended ending is for a local station voice-over announcement.
Great stuff and info. I recently visited the little street in London where this was filmed and it has hardly changed in over 50 years. So pleased to have seen this footage after all that time.
Correction: further research has revealed the filming date as May 7, 1967 - the day after his audience with the Pontiff!
Did he convert to Rome?
Well, Holy ----, Batman! @@3DFILMARCHIVE
Thanks for your info, mate!
Adam West. Legend.
Looks like the director forgot to yell "cut" towards the end and let that scene go on a bit longer than it should have.
Inserted shorts like this are always left to run on, for technical reasons.
Usually they add voice overs to the tail end of those long awkward shots.
This is why we had the revolution.
I DONT WEAR HOCKEY PADS - they should have used that voice over
i do not care what anyone says Adam West is the only one that can batman goofy and still be badass
Legendary! UK children got taught road safety by Batman and Darth Vader, outstanding.
This really is a genius ad, kids are gonna do anything Batman tell them to!
that awkward long pause at the end made this a lot more funny than it should of been
"we don't know how batman got on the set, he just came in and started talking about road safety and then took off with a bunch of kids"
I miss having a Batman for whom this sort of thing is perfectly in character. Michael Keaton MAYBE could have done it, but no one after him. I mean, imagine if Christian Bale had given it a go:
Bale: NOW CHILDREN, HOW DOES IT GO?
Children: Run away from the scary man with the voice!
If Kevin Conroy was given the Batman suit, I could definitely see his Batman doing this
@@corneliusquincydavenportic1913 Maybe, but I think he'd be more likely to swoop in and save a kid from traffic or something. I can't really see him out in broad daylight on the sidewalk playing teacher like this.
I can imagine Christian Bale's Batman on Sesame Street singing "C IS FOR COOKIE. THAT'S GOOD ENOUGH FOR ME!"
@@DevineInnovations Yes, that one I can imagine. It wouldn't happen, but I can imagine it.
I am the darkness... I am the night... IM A CROSSING GUARD
The awkward end is because this is a 'rough cut' by the editor ..not the final screened version that is probably lost.
this was probably for technical reasons, uk ads at the time was technically a still (but no freeze frame) for networks such As ITV to cut to the next ad or to the programs
Bravo Adam west thanks for bringing batman to life Rest In Peace mate
We love Adam West!!
Holy Traffic Danger Batman!
That ending shot lasted uncomfortably long
See the many other comments that explain this.
Never knew about this!
Partridge's dictionary of slang lists the phrase "good thinking", which apparently was an Americanism that got into the Brit lexicon, but always ironically: in its full form, the phrase is "Good thinking, Batman". The show definitely had an influence there.
This is an absolute gem RIP Adam West
I went to London for the first time with my bestie. Every time we got to crosswalk, I recited this in my best Adam West voice. After the first dozen times he said, “You have to stop that now.” 😂 I still recited in my head!
We love Adam West!!
Holy hole in a doughnut! What a fabulous find - thanks for sharing!
That shot at the end looks like that kid is going "Help! I don't know this man!!"
Also remember: If you don't live in the UK but somewhere where cars drive on the right side and not in the left you look:
LEFT
RIGHT
LEFT again!
"damn it billy look at the camera"
RIP Adam west
We miss you Adam West!!
3 dislikes: Joker, Two-Face and Bane
Rip Adam west.
What would have made this advertisement absolutely brilliant is if the director had filmed them crossing Abbey Road in London. Then two years later, well, you know...
Great stuff
My hero
batmans just hangin out in London while Gotham is terrorized lmao
.
It's okay.......Robin remained behind to single-handedly keep the lid on crime in Gotham City, while Batman was off fighting the good fight in London Town !!
.
Did not like West as Batman as a kid. It's been only in the last few years that I understand how wonderful he was, and how good the man under the cowl was as well.
I found him hilarious, just like in the comics.
I don't quite know what the Americans are laughing at, though.
right! morals were high back then! the show I appreciated as a kid for the action, now I love the sexy undertones of this show, especially catwoman!
LOVED him as Batman! I think he made that role his own. I loved how intellectual he was. He just made me feel like he gave a damn about things and his voice made him sexy to me as a kid. I felt like he was a smart person and could deal with you on any level.
@@bingola45 I'm American and I don't see anyone laughing much.
Thank you for uploading this I had always heard about this, but I had never actually seen it.
"You play chicken, you fry."
You cut out the part where Batman wore his powered armor and fought Green Cross Man in Whitechapel.
1:03 That was werid, I'm not sure if you want your kids to play with Batman
I wonder why he didnt make an appearance at Montreal s world fair Expo 1967.It was the in place back then.Even Ed Sullivan taped a few shows there.
Celebrities just trying to do a public service in full costume with no shame. Simpler times...
Idk why those last 11 seconds stuck out to me more than anything.
Good thinking Batman.🦇
Holy bat commercial!
30 mins later the real actual batman actor appears*
"Look right, look left, look right again, and then, only when you're absolutely sure the road is clear, you can safely - KA-POWW!!!"
"Batman. Why did you stop to look at the camera and say all that after looking right and left? You should have looked right and left Again after making that long speech! Batman? Batman?"
In black and white, too! Damn!
This would have made for a funny Family Guy gag.
so cool
"Uhhhhh, is, is someone going to yell cut?"
Batman had come to Londinium to catch Lord Ffogg, of course!
Your friendly neighbourhood Batman
And then the Joker just runs them over out of nowhere.
1:00 *Ten seconds of silence!*
sweet
Cheers 👍🏼👍🏼 woot woot
Cut...cut...CUT!
Someone say "CUT"!
This kid better not piss on me. But I kid Batman.
Pause the clip at the End I think that Is Susan Hampshire.
That is one hell of an awkward ending. Did the director forget to say "cut" or something?
.
It could be that they purposely ran long knowing they were (maybe) planning on superimposing some text on the screen in post-production, possibly telling parents something more about child safety (or putting up an address they could write to for more information) in conjunction with Adam West's 'message' during this spot ........don't know for sure, just guessing......
.
This has been explained many times in previous comments.
@@sdne1959 i know the comment was 2 years ago, but it was like that for technical reasons but the awkward ending was used for some reason (but it's not broadcast) it was just in case ITV or the BBC cut out to the next programe, ad, or continuity in here
That end fas creepy. Lol!
The ending when he picks up the boy reminds me of dora the explorer after she's asked a question? Lol
I would laugh if the kid at the end grabbed his Mask and tried to pull it off and Batman was like...”DONT TOUCH MY COWL YOU LITTLE SHIT” 😀😀
No Batman please! Put down the child!
O my 😄
Watch Dogs Legion reveal trailer for next DLC
Same year when Disney released The Jungle Book
POW!
Our roads are actually more dangerous than anything in a comic book....
Did Francois Truffault direct the ending?
This was in black and white while the series was in color?
I want to see one of the more recent Batmen (Christian Bale?) doing this.
Holy simpler times Batman, the children back then are not connected to zombie phones as they are today !
Yeah but back then the adults would see a fishing rod and say "Holy simpler times, in my days children would fish instead of being like zombies in front of that darn T.V." ;).
right we played cowboys and cops and army and batman outside! no phone our bicycle was are go to! I t was great!
OK Boomer. Haven’t you got a virus to shield yourself from?
He's come to save Councillor Murray from those nasty muggers. But where's Rodders?
Aaaaaaaaaaand....CUT !
“Could we try that again? I felt a little awkward staring at the camera.”
Who is the woman make appearance in the final of the commercial? she Looks Beautiful.
i have several questions
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand .....CUT !
Well who’s taking care of robin and the bat cave James Bond?
Holy chaperone! Actually it was Commander Bond's good friend, Alfred Pennyworth.
Um...in the States, that would be considered jaywalking...
It's a good thing that this is in the UK where no such law exists and is perfectly legal.
In the US it would be Left - Right - Left anyway. I imagine a fair number of folks get clobbered on going from one country to the other.
🌎
I would definitely love to recreate this and make it better
Came here from an animation that changed the outcome to Batman getting run over. Kinda disappointed at this one's wholesomeness.
EDIT: This one ruclips.net/video/K0TrSCjR9h4/видео.html
In the USA would it be look left, look right, look left again?
The reasons for looking in those directions is because they drive on the opposite side of the road than we do.
So in America I suppose it would be reverse of that.
0:21 'British Children.'
The character is supposed to be an American.
His lines are therefore written from an American's point of view.
Lol! I know! I'm just thinking of how that would be treated, if he said that today! It would be considered racist, all over that place :)
The biggest 'problem' for the PC-types would probably be the fact that the British Children shown are 'hideously white'.
Lol! I personally don't think you can be bad looking, because of your skin colour! :)
Greg Dyke, one-time Director General of the BBC obviously does!
Isn't it supposed to be "English children?" Maybe correct either way?
It's interchangeable. People in England say both English & British as adjectives.
Fake. batman only goes out at night
Bri'ish batman
Crazy out of shape superhero’s we’re back then
