      And it could be seen as actual "true" Damascus steel. Pattern welded steel isn't what gave the swords from Damascus their famous pattern. It was already in the Wootz steel, as FZ does it pretty much.

      Wootz damascus is real damascus steel. The reason it looks different, is because you are used to seeing what most people call damascus, which is just pattern welded steel of different types.

    Seeing how little scale that steel has coming out of the forge like that, it must have a good content of vanadium and chromium. Should make for quite a durable blade, and of course the delicate texture of the pattern of crucible steel is something to behold. Very lovely.

      If all he added was the steel bearings, graphite, and glass, there wouldn't be any more chromium or vanadium than was in the steel to begin with.

      Alloying elements like vanadium, chromium, molybdenum etc. Are energetically favorable for carbide formation so if you thermal cycle any high alloy steel enough you will get carbide banding however a dendritic structure is necessary to start with so the steel must be melted or held very close to its melting point for an extended period

    Gorgeous and I have seen crucible steel made before, but not always with the wootz pattern. what were you adding aside from carbon to the crucible if you don't mind me asking....I have heard some vanadium is needed in very small amount, and to seal the top used broken bits of glass or coarse sand, but I your process seemed relatively straight forward for someone with the right equipment, I am just incredibly curious about the steel type, and what was added to the crucible.....Beautiful work!

    • @intothewild3349
      @intothewild3349 2 года назад

      Quenching a blade doesnt ruin the pattern ,I've never even heard anything like that . Usually even with pattern welded blades the patter becomes more visible because the steel etches darker when it's hard

    • @troutfishinggermany9186
      @troutfishinggermany9186 2 года назад

      @@intothewild3349 that is true for pattern welded blades, but wootz is something completely different. By heating it to the required temperature for the hardening, the pattern usually disappears in wootz, because the material is being homogenized.
