Bertie Cordle is one of the most interesting inventors / teachers out there and this video is excellent. He helps redefine how physics works in the best golf swings (and impact) and has added some essential information that was missing regarding the impact zone. Homer Kelley had covered some of theses points previously but Bertie adds something new and his instruction is wonderfully clear. Its interesting that both Dustin Johnson and Joh Rahm both show this move so well but it's not just about how the body moves (Ryan Fox also demonstrates this impact dynamic as well, but his upper body stays well behind the ball so he just shows there is more than one way to achieve the right impact pressure). Thanks for showing the video!
This really clicked with me while watching the other day. Found some time to hit a couple dozen balls with my PW today and my jaw dropped at the ball flight and distance gain I got trying this! I really felt like I was puring the shots like never before and I doubt I even got anywhere near the positions Bertie was showing in the video. Thanks for the video and excellent content
Really is amazing how game-changing a simple concept can be. This one has been around a while, but Cordle is like an apostle or revivalist, developing these aids and refocusing people on it: Full release comes only past the ball. You should have the feeling that the ball is collected as the clubhead is still gaining speed, not quite at its release point yet, but snapping its way there. Get that concept, and a whole long line of other stuff tends to fall into place.
Mike Austin said he learned how to swing by swinging a club into a muddy bank and not getting mud on his sleeves. The curtain replaces the muddy bank. Good idea, much more versitile than the impact bag.
Be better Golf and Bertie has once again out done themselves. Thanks for bringing this key movement and optimal position to light in a very very highlighted and stressed way. Good instructors know how to really focus on and make their students understand the “KEYS”. I love this way of thinking and training. Yes it’s counter intuitive to traditional teaching but it’s very effective! Absolutely love it. I went to the range with just the concepts shown here and gained so much more control over the ball. For me I feel like it’s more of a preset of the wrists in a shortened backswing and then more body rotation in combination with a tad bit of trail arm extension through the ball. Ball seemed to leave the club face lower and shot out without me putting in a ton of effort. Accuracy and consistency definitely improved. When I did have miss hits I felt exactly why it happened instead of that lingering WTH just happened lol.
brendan, so i was just hitting chips and pitches in the yard and that little adjustment at address with the hands more in front of the ball and the left arm and club more in line really made a big difference. can't wait to try it with full swing.
Such a different concept than I’m use to but I like it. I’ve got a setup to use like the curtain in my house but I haven’t hit any balls yet. It feels almost like I’m pushing the club handle into the mat to make it flat which is completely opposite of my usual feeling. Also, the way he explained how the wrist works it’s a very strange feeling but I love this cuz it’s different and whatever I was doing wasn’t working for me!! Excited to see the results from this!!
An enormously helpful video gentlemen! I have the DST Compressor 8 (I think!) iron but had not really used it. I am not sure why not, but with the info provided here I cannot wait to practise more. The Impact Curtain and the implications of its proper use have been a real eye opener for me-so thanks again!
brendon, great discussion and info on this impact position that we are all seeking. i have at times pounded on a log with a sledge hammer. i've wrecked 2 impact bags and practice mats over the last few years plus the sound from those bags scares the heck out of the dog and cat.maybe i should get a pinata that i saw at walmart or maybe a dst compressor.
Thanks for demystifying the swing photos that show clubs flexed the wrong direction before strike. Those are very deceiving without explanation. Also, the lag tension talk is really eye opening. Thank Bertie!
Thanks for the great lessons!!! 2 quick questions: a lot of teachers say don't drag the club handle. Isn't this doing that? And, doesn't this stop you from throwing the club head through the ball??? Thanks again for all the terrific content!
Andrew, good questions. Handle dragging is a when a golfers arms and hands work independently from the hip and torso rotation. Invariably this puts a lot of pressure on the golfers lower back, they feel like they have to HOLD the angle in their wrists UNNATURALLY. By doing this it invariably produces an impact with an open face and hence the reason why a lot of folks start shanking the ball. Reaching the Optimal Impact Position with the correct weight shift & body rotation (kinematic chain) means the last thing to move is the arms and hands and the angles are maintained without trying to maintain them consciously. They are simply trailing behind the main lever and only catch up after impact. There is a massive difference between the two. Handle dragging reduces speed while reaching optimal impact through the correct unwinding of the kinematic chain produces both speed and consistency.
I was just thinking of something like this. Except I was think about a peice of foam where you want your hands at impact that way you could actually be hitting a ball at the same time. I was thinking doing drills where you would be slapping the back of your left hand into the piece of foam. Because no matter what your hands have to be in that spot for good contact.
This is awesome ! It makes you focus on an end result rather than a million individual body movements. Easier to learn that way your body can do amazing things if you just give it an end feel or destination you want it to work towards.
Agreed I can't explain how I throw a ball but if you tell me to throw a ball I can do it. Simple swing thought that has me making unheard of pure contact. Long high shots too!
@@Libbyyyyyyyyyy You should go back and relearn how to throw a ball while closely analyzing every muscle involved, the measurements of every angle, the sequence of fire, etc. Then you'll be way better. I'm thinking about trying that in how a drive a car or walk down a flight of stairs.
For me this move is easily done with none bowl left wrist. I use what people call "a strong grip". Imagine you chop the tree with bowl left wrist, yes it is hurt alot. What I want to say is, the grip is always changing depend on what type of shot we make. In tennis we change the grip of the racquet entire game, slice, topspin blahh blahh. Good observation Ham, the DST impact line works for players regardless if they have a strong or weak grip. The handle position reached will be the same relative to the players body and eye line.

Where have you been all of my frustrated golf life!!! You have shown and proven the most critical and frustrating part of golf. Most instruction is about getting in the mysterious slot position. I feel like running up and down the street like Steve Martin in the "Jerk" movie when he got his name in the phone book!!! Thank You!!!!
i saw the vid with the box yesterday. i guess that is a part of this. does or did this change the bottom of your swing arch? how long did it take to not hit thin?
I realize that swinging at full speed, say an average of 85 mph with a driver, at full extention there is a tremendous rotational torque causing the face to rotate closed and consequently causing the lead hand to lose control and thus forcing the lower hand to attempt to control the rotation. but as the club head speed is reduced to chipping speeds the twisting is reduced alot, therefore it is a lot easier to control the rotation, with the lower hand, because theres much less torque. So chipping is not as CRITICAL to control. It's easier to maintain face angles up to impact as compared to full swing speed. But, never the less, it only makes sense to maintain good consistant face angle and club path thru impact with all the shots. Including putting.
Great Vid! That’s what I’m working right now. Does that technique also apply with the Fairwaywoods and Driver? We need to have an positive angle of attack with these.
Stay tuned that is explained by Bertie in a future video. the point is the LAG tension amount is THE SAME, the ball position changes and that is what changes how much shaft lean at impact.
BE BETTER GOLF Thx for the answer Brendon! I guess that an equal amount of a strong grip is mandatory to keep the clubface square at impact while delaying impact, keeping a stronger angle (lag) and getting hands in front! Hopefully you discussed that detail. It won’t work without it (or bowed wrists to do so). Right?
Best yet Brendan and Bertie everyone will have a different way of getting to the corrwect post impact postion and mainating lag tension, just look at Tiger , Furyk, Hogan, Nicklaus etc, the one non varying factor was there incredible abilty to remai stable and square thru impact
2 different things. Think about driver, not much or zero shaft lean but it must have lag tension. Meaning the club is still being pulled through. Best seen by the line off the lead forearm at impact
Eddie v.good question. You should have varying degrees of forward shaft lean with irons as the ball position with long irons moves forwards (relative to the centre of your body) with fairways woods you will still have a tiny amount of forward shaft lean. However with the driver (depending upon whether you're choosing to hit a high or low flighted shot) you may have shaft lean or not. However, in all cases with all clubs you will have the same impact geometry between your lead shoulder, lead wrist and club head. Meaning that you will have the same amount of lag tension with all clubs.
it's funny how we can swing a hammer or ax w/o thinking too much and do it correctly but do it with a golf club and we have to train ourselves intently. it's almost like swing the hands and the club will follow and when you do it right the strike feels more like a click cause you hit the ball first then the sound of the turf.
