    Brendan I was using this technique on the driving range tonight. Hit the ball extremely solid. Johnny Miller said it the best, " get your PhD in Impact position". 30 is absolutely on target with this concept because it works. This is some of your best work yet!!!!TY

    Bertie has broken down the golf swing to its essence. Like many intellectual leaps, his analysis reduces a seemingly complex motion to a simple one. Any golfer will feel that thrilling Aha! moment when they see the swing the way he sees it. Many thanks.

    Great video...I’m practicing this proper impact and lag tension after watching your previous video about your lag curtain. I simulate the lag curtain with my hitting net in my basement. The pivot through impact like you suggest is exactly what I needed to do. My ball mark on my club is now a complete circle in the center of my face starting about one groove up....after 15 balls it looked the same.....I din not have to think about timing at all....never happened before...not even close as I used to try and release manually through impact....super stoked I could repeat this impact position 15 times in a row using this proper impact method! I did notice I had to continue my pivot more around and not turn my chest up so quickly through impact....felt like I never touched the ball with the club...what a nice feeling.
    Thanks again Bertie...and thanks to be better golf! Keep it up!!
    Cheers

    Sorry but focus on positions in the golf swing is a recipe for frustration. The true focus in the golf swing should be delivering to the target. That's why the best players reach what was referenced in this video as "full extension" past the ball is because they are delivering to a target beyond the ball and they allowing the ball to get in the way. Positions in the swing are a by-product of target focus.

    How do I like these videos twice?! I'm striking the ball the best I ever have thanks to this advice. It makes so much sense and stops me focusing on things that don't matter to me like perfecting backswing positions. I have literally NEVER hit my irons as crisply as i do now and the ball flight is so much stronger. I was worried I'd start driving the ball badly but that's improved too. I can't wait to go out and hit more solid shots. I hit 8 greens of the 9 holes i played on Sunday and it was quite windy on there links. I'm going to get one of those funky looking bent irons for my birthday this year. Thanks so much guys, I don't feel like I need to work on my swing chasing positions any more, i just rehearse impact then go. Well done!! It's so simple.

    The idea of hitting the impact curtain with the whole shaft at the same time is a great feel and visual cue for how to time the swinging of the club thru. What if you reverse engineer that feeling at impact!? So, if you get into the optimum impact position with your hands ahead of the club head and the shaft leaning forward compressing the ball forward. what if you imagine an impact curtain tilted on the same angle as your shaft is leaning forward and you are trying to hit that tilted impact curtain with the whole shaft. That way you would not just be releasing the clubhead with a wrist flip or dragging the handle thru just to have forward shaft lean. KInd of like whacking an impact bag with a stick, you would swing the whole stick at the bag hitting it with forward shaft lean, not just flicking the end of the stick or just dragging the handle of the stick.

    • @BEBETTERGOLF
      @BEBETTERGOLF  5 лет назад

      "what if you imagine an impact curtain tilted on the same angle as your shaft is leaning forward "
      doesn't work. if your swing has not Lag Tenision, your swing has to be directed at a spot past the ball or it will always be flipped. Any target at the ball regardless of angle, etc will result in a flip. There are a few reasons for this.

I get compliments on my swing and I do have a nice rhythm/tempo (although it feels like I'm swinging hard), but I have numerous mechanical issues. with my swing that really show up on video.

    Go through the whole swing with the compressor in slow motion. When you get to impact you can really sense how to trap the ball and send it on the target line with the proper hand pressure.

    I have been working on this very thing. Trying to learn how to pivot in golf swing rather than standing up and thrusting hips forward ie. humping the goat? I am finding that if I can pivot (turn) at impact maintaining spine angle you automatically will have more forward shaft lean at impact. Drill I am working on is making backswing with left arm parallel to ground then pivot (turn) through turning body with club lagging at impact. I guess you would call this abbreviated punch shots which feel very powerful when struck solid. My fault in this drill is hitting many shanks but uncertain if my path is too inside or a little over the top or leaning too far forward causing this? Great video fellas!

  • @PMiller3425
    @PMiller3425 5 лет назад +2

    Good video. I’m glad he explained that “lag tension” is a result of body rotation instead of pulling with the arms. People see Cameron Champ at impact and try to get their arms forward and then get the shanks. From a sequence perspective, his belt buckle is well in front of his hands at impact, but he has good arm structure so his arms don’t have that “arms behind” look even though they are on the right side of the body and not 2d “forward.”

  • @wreckim
    @wreckim 5 лет назад +2

    Awesome stuff...just my 2c...to fixate on the Top Ten in the World is not really relevant IMO. I'm going to contradict myself a little bit, in that Bertie plainly states that you don't need HUGE amounts of Lag Tension...just having it is enough. I think that's an important point because lots and lots of absolutely awesome players, like Jack and Watson appear to have only some of that; and it may be that huge amounts of Lag Tension is a very athletic move that comes with years of training...while just having the lag tension of a typical 1 handicapper might be a realistic goal for most of us to achieve. 2c more. Thanks for posting. Love all this stuff.

    • @Dstgolf
      @Dstgolf 5 лет назад

      Yes, you are correct. Having lag tension through impact is enough. It was purely an observation that it seems to be a sliding scale from best to beginner. Impact awareness is something that ALL golfers irrespective of ability should be focus on.

  • @joancohen9769
    @joancohen9769 5 лет назад

    The only thing that matters in golf is IMPACT.
    Traditional instruction ,even from the best pros involves teaching golf from a chain reaction philosophy, so Bertie's video is very different and very interesting.
    When Bertie demonstrated progressively better impact positions,it is pretty obvious that the angle of the right wrist (extension) becomes increasingly larger as the impact improves .
    3 questions
    Should golfers try to overemphasize maintaining as much of the angle of this right wrist through impact?
    I have seen some videos of the Hackmotion wrist sensor which measures the amount of flexion/extension of the wrists.How much extension of the right wrist /flexion of the left wrist do better payers have and what are realistic goals for serious amateur golfers.
    One of the criticism of the DST irons is that the golfer is forced to start his hands so far ahead that it is difficult to make a good backswing.Any suggestions to overcome this problem.

  • @invioceenclosed
    @invioceenclosed 5 лет назад +1

    100% Agreed. You don't hit the ball in the back swing. Jim Furyk & Ray Floyd are just 2 perfect examples of how much a back swing matters at impact.
    Impact (Strike) is everything.

  • @mrkipling3841
    @mrkipling3841 5 лет назад +3

    Great stuff B, The real question is how do you do it at full speed. I apply this (I think) in my chipping and pitching. Add swing speed and it gradually breaks down the faster I get. The only way I can seem to keep my hands in front of the shaft is by Channel locking it and playing the ball off the back foot.

    • @joancohen9769
      @joancohen9769 5 лет назад +2

      Even though playing the ball off of your back foot will deloft the club and will place your hands in front of the clubhead,it will ALSO result in a steeper AOA and MORE SPIN and be self defeating.

    • @Dstgolf
      @Dstgolf 5 лет назад +1

      No don't put the ball back, that is counter intuitive. That will force you to throw lag away to shallow the Angle of attack in order not to take salmon sized divots. Focus on doing the split hand grip drill and hitting a curtain with the full length of the shaft opposite the outside of your lead foot. Its all about keeping your pivot (body rotation going through impact. Good luck

  • @wallstreetoneil
    @wallstreetoneil 5 лет назад

    Whenever I want to fix anything going wrong with my golf swing I go back to the Impact position and work backwards - exactly as this video suggests - it is absolutely the best approach. I have stopped worrying about almost everything else in the golf swing and for further simplicity reasons remove my left hand off the club and now only practice my positions concentrating only on my right wrist positions at Impact, at club parallel to the ground coming into impact and at the top of the backswing - that's it. If you start at Impact and drill into your brain your right wrist angle and then back up one step to where the right wrist is at parallel to the ground coming into impact and then finally where that right wrist needs to be 1 stop before that at the top of the backswing, you can basically teach almost anyone to hit a golf ball well in 15 minutes.

    it was pointed out to me that i already have this position at impact relative to an average golfer. i was trying to create a position i do on my own without my knowledge as it is an effect and not a cause. for me....it's easier to do this with body rotation than using hands and arms to do the job. and one must understand wrist position in the impact zone. jack said he wanted to his left wrist to control the club path. it had to be bowed. so, to square the club face the body has to be rotated left.

    Brendan , Ive played golf for more than 30 years, im 52 this year and just a tad under 6foot 3 , I've played all sorts sports all my life and I come from a medical/sports career background. I know for sure that I release lag tension too early (I've seen it in videos) resulting in shanks, slices, pull hooks you name it and a very high ball flight. Most instructors I've delt with want to improve my swing by getting me to stop early extending. I always felt intuitively that the early extension was a symptom of the poor impact mechanics, not the other way around.
    My thoughts are also that my driver max swing speed of about 103mph would improve significantly (as would smash factor ) if that impact position could improve and I could create more lag tension.

    Until you understand and know how to work certain forces and pressures you'll never get into a natural impact position. In particular you need the feeling of force down your right side and foot into the ground as a major part of your downswing transition. This will naturally counterbalance your left leg/side (think Sam Sneed squat as an extreme example). That counterbalance effect along with torso rotation shortly thereafter will naturally shallow and slot the club and will never give up lag pressure unless you stall your rotation too soon. If the DST club can help someone understand how to achieve the needed downward forces and pressures then great!

      @@gamertg9747 What the hands do post impact is determined by the path of the club. If the club is on an in-to-out path you may find it difficult to reach a full follow through. Don't worry about this, this is normal. On the other hand if the club path is more out-to-in you will be able to rotate the heck out of the pivot and finish normally. But the sensation is that you have a full body release. Good luck

    I think the hands ahead of the ball at impact is fine if you've got any sort of speed with the wedges and 9-7 irons as the spin will always launch it into the air... i personally feel if i had my hands where that far forward with long the longer irons, wood or driver it would feel like i was de-lofting these clubs and would get no distance from it. Always nice to work on technique though.

      Good question. Watch the other videos i did with Brendon. They explain this exact thing. However to give you an answer here. You need to recognise that in the club head arc the head starts to work in a positive or upward direction after the club is approximately opposite the inside of your lead foot. If you practice hitting the impact curtain with the curtain opposite the outside of your lead foot then you will have retained lag tension while also having an upward angle of attack.

    1:15 Not necessarily true because if you have a bad backswing and a bad downswing then that will not enable you to reach a good impact. You can try and train impact but without a decent backswing and downswing you can train impact for a hundred years and still never get there.

    This is golf right here...if you can grasp this concept then you energize the ball...then you can teach yourself how to aim it and control it. Impact is boss.

    Hey Brendon, if you get a negative angle of attack number on a launch monitor is that indicative of having lag tension at impact? For example -3.0 on GC2.

    • @BEBETTERGOLF
      @BEBETTERGOLF  5 лет назад

      No, you can certainly flip and have a down attack angle.
      You have to have lag tension and be relatively shallow through the ball for most control

    • @Somefatdude
      @Somefatdude 5 лет назад

      boogiebear2112 look at dynamic loft. That’s all this is. He’s just branded it as “lag tension.” You should have less loft at impact than your club has statically. That is forward shaft lean.

      @@Somefatdude That is true most of the time, but it isn't unknown for a golfer to reduce dynamic loft just by placing the ball back in their stance and still flipping a little. In this instance they will have thrown away lag tension but reduced dynamic loft. So lag tension is the true test of this issue

    Hey Bertie, do you have any recommendations on how to shallow out the club in transition?

    • @Dstgolf
      @Dstgolf 5 лет назад

      A good tip to allow your body to initiate the swing in the most efficient kinematic sequence is to "feel like" you pause at the top and allow gravity to act for a fraction of a second. This will allow your lower body to start moving while the club falls.

    If you look at the bad impact position vs the good impact position its the intent of the golfer of scooping or flinging the clubhead at the ball vs compressing the ball by swinging the whole club past the ball. The key word is compress. you compress the ball forward where the club is ahead of the ball at impact(except for the trailing club head). Its the same on a chip shot or a driver you are still trying to compress the ball so it goes straight forward as opposed to trying to lift it or scoop it. If your intent is to compress the ball straight forward, than you will reach the proper impact position.

    Seems you are emphasizing the lead arm and shaft should not be in line at impact but after impact. That doesn't fit with current or past great players. I've watch many videos face on and looked at pictures at impact and the lead arm and shaft are almost exactly in line at impact. The trail arms of great ball strikers are slightly bent at impact and their lead arm is in line with the shaft.

    Does he really think that poor golfers are actually getting into a bad impact position because they've taken a poorly educated guess at what the shaft angle should be when they strike the ball? That may have been just some video filler, but I actually laughed when he said that.
